do you have any recs for nature docs? I’ve been wanting to watch more or even read some books too!!
YES! it's all i do in my spare time lmao
Blackfish (a doc about Tilikum, an orca kept in captivity at SeaWorld and genuinely, everyone involved in SeaWorld and Marineland and Co., should just die a horrible death). The Whale (about Luna, a lonely orca living in Nootka Sound). Sharkwater Extinction. Secrets of... Series (Octopus is def the best). Bearwalker of the Northwoods. My Octopus Teacher. The Year Earth Changed. Virunga. Yellowstone Wolf Dynasty.
a lot of the series with David Attenborough are arguably some of the best. i also love that they aren't shying away from climate change (a lot have been dancing around the issue without actually pointing fingers) and how we, specifically, have ruined these habitats and how it's our responsibility to fix them. Blue Planet II, Life on Earth, Life of Birds, Life of Mammals, Life in the Undergrowth.
+ Grizzly Man. it is VERY controversial for obvious reasons but for the most part, if you like Grizzlies, you're probably familiar with Timothy Treadwell. if you're NOT familiar with Treadwell, def do some research before watching this because it's not a family-friendly doc in the slightest but a lot of people get very weird about animals and i think this is the best doc that explores that relationship. and of course, the dangers about obsession with deadly predators and what happens when we get too comfortable.
for geographical locations - the best are usually ones about National Parks because it has a lil of everything: flora, fauna, gorgeous shots of parks and nature. i also like a few channels on YouTube that explore areas they find on Google Earth (thePOVchannel, Desert Drifter), or others like Part-Time Explorer, EVNautilus, Natural World Facts. NatGeo has a 3 hour long National Park vid on YouTube too. then there's trail cams, bear cams, etc.
and books - currently obsessed with Dispossessing the Wilderness: Indian Removal and the Making of the National Parks by Mark David Spence, Can Life Prevail? by finnish ecologist Pentti Linkola, Tropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South America by Adrian Forsyth & Ken Miyata, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, Birdsong in a Time of Silence by Steven Lovatt, How to Catch a Mole by Marc Hamer, A Place Like No Other, Discovering the Secrets of the Serengeti by R.E. Sinclair and Rene Beyers, and my all-time fave: Do (Not) Feed the Bears: The Fitful History of Wildlife and Tourists in Yellowstone by Alice Biel

Swim On 10 Donations
The yearly amount for all Swim On zines has been donated! We did so well this year! Thank you for your help with shark conservation. This year we made $941.00 All proceeds were donated to finfree.org, which is listed as the Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation. Swim On donations are sent out on a yearly basis every September 30th. I take care of all the fees that stripe takes myself, so Finfree gets the full amount. We made a whopping $941.00!!! The most we've EVER made! Thank you all for your support in this last volume, what an incredible journey. I'll keep annually donating whatever we get even if I don't make another zine (but who knows, maybe I'll come back to it if I have more time down the road). All Swim On zines are still available for purchase!

if i were paid a dollar for every person who is associated with sharks and one day, going out into the ocean, would not be found, i would have two dollars, which is not so much, but it is strange that i have them. eion bailey and rob stewart, i mean you. if you somehow haven't seen rob stewart's «sharkwater» movie yet, then what are you so busy with? however, this film is not that easy to watch (at least for me, i cried throughout the movie), so be prepared.

That's basically sharkwater.
Shark documentary ad that makes it look like an action movie lots of blood and shots that look like there from a shark horror movie and use phases like “terror of the deep” to reel people in
But then the actual document is about how human are a bigger danger to sharks and how we are predators to them and we need to work to protect and preserve the species

Shark Fact 8: Respiratory System
Tumblr media
Nurse Shark
Some species of sharks have a spiracle that allows them to pull water into their respiratory system while at rest. Most sharks have to keep swimming to pump water over their gills.
A shark's spiracle is located just behind the eyes which supplies oxygen directly to the shark's eyes and brain. Bottom dwelling sharks, like angel sharks and nurse sharks, use this extra respiratory organ to breathe while at rest on the seafloor. It is also used for respiration when the shark's mouth is used for eating.

if you've never watched the documentary Sharkwater, I highly recommend it. one of my favourite ways to learn about something is to be taught by someone who just genuinely loves the subject, and Rob Stewart (Canadian film maker, shark conservationist, made the documentary and unfortunately died because someone tampered with his oxygen tank on a dive) absolutely adored sharks. there are scenes in that documentary that showcase just how beautiful and gentle sharks are. there's this clip of a shark swimming right up next to him so he can hug and pet it, and the level of trust between him and the shark makes me emotional. just so beautiful. he shed light on the illegal shark fin industry, and there are clips of him aboard the Sea Shephard, sabotaging these shark finning boats. he was really willing to go the extra mile for these creatures, and honestly I just wish more people lived their lives with a passion like that. I watched Sharkwater in my grade ten science class, and it literally changed my life. I have loved sharks ever since. I highly recommend watching it. the best way to learn is from someone who loves the subject. you will be able to share their joy, even just a little. go watch the movie. save some sharks.

Shark Sense: 04
Tumblr media
A Night Shark's green eye
Most sharks can see well in dark lighted areas, have fantastic night vision, and can see colors. The back of sharks’ eyeballs have a reflective layer of tissue called a tapetum. This helps sharks see extremely well with little light.
