Relationships: Hiccup & Stoick

I was watching httyd 1 with a friend and she noticed this…
When they have captured Toothless in the ring a Viking walks up beside Stoick with an axe, awaiting orders to kill the beast
Tumblr media
And Stoick looks at the axe
Tumblr media
Then he looks at Toothless
Tumblr media
And finally he pushes the axe away, telling them to “put it with the others” instead
I always wondered why Stoick didn’t immediately kill Toothless, now I understand. Although Stoick didn’t understand it, his son had begged him not to hurt Toothless, and for once, in this bitter-sweet moment of mercy, Stoick listened to his son

you guys i spent hours yesterday reading a httyd fanfic and spent most of that time CRYING MY EYES OUT because of how they treated my boy hiccup.
fun fact about me, circa 2015-2016 when i still sailed the seas of the old ffn, httyd fanfiction about hiccup was my favorite, and i loved the ones where stoick was such a good dad (was i projecting my daddy issues onto fictional characters? PROBABLY but i bawled my eyes out after every heartwarming ending) and like last night i was taken back to those days AND IT FELT LIKE CHILDHOOD. it felt like ffn was still the place and all the fanfics were at my fingertips (they still are, except those older ones that didn’t make the jump RIP)
anyway here’s the fic, show it love pls

Maybe I'm The Problem
While i'm here i may as well show off my fic, Maybe I'm The Problem. I'm not the most consistent updater but I am still working on it, and i'm trying to motivate myself more!
Hiccup has a lot of unhealed scars from the past. The world seems to move on from what happened for the first 15 years of his life, but he can’t. His trauma was overlooked as he was heralded as a hero, his disability a trademark of a “true man”.
He wants people to see the damage they have done to him after so many years of believing he deserved it.

HTTYD Fanfic: The Secrets We Keep
Entry to the Whumperless Whump Event.
Category: Seizures, Wild Animal Attack (If you count Hiccup losing his leg after battling the dragon known as the Red Death)
Opening scene to a recently revised version of an old fanfic:
Hiccup walked into his home after getting back from flying with Toothless. He was sore and regretting flying so soon after losing his leg. He could barely walk on it. The young boy was using the said dragon as a walking prop.
Together they looked around and saw that Stoick wasn't home yet. However, there was a cauldron hanging over the fire full of stew. Hiccup hobbled over to the table to grab his bowl. Before he could take another step, his entire body felt stiff and tingly. He couldn't move.
Toothless watched his human with concern, crooning worriedly as Hiccup collapsed to the floor and began to shake violently. Unsure of what to do, the Night Fury began pacing and roaring, hoping someone outside would hear him.
__________________________________________________________
Stoick was walking back home after a council meeting when he heard roaring coming from the house. Over the past months, he'd gotten quite good at distinguishing Toothless's roar and warbles. This one meant something was wrong. The chief broke into a run, yelling for someone to go get Gothi and bring her to his home.
He burst through the door and found his son lying on the floor unconscious with Toothless frantically pacing around the boy. He rushed over to his son and knelt down looking for any external reason for his collapse, but found none.
Carefully, the chief lifted Hiccup up off the floor and placed him in the bed. Just as he was doing so, Hiccup started to come to.
"Dad?" Hiccup asked wearily, unsure if it was actually his father he was seeing.
"I'm right here, son," Stoick reassured. "Gothi is on her way. What happened? Is it your leg?"
Hiccup shook his head. "It hurts, but I don't think it's the problem. I was, um, I was getting a bowl when suddenly I couldn't move. I felt as if I'd be struck by lightning. Next thing I know, you're here and I'm in bed."
Stoick stared down at his son, concern plastering his face. He'd heard stories like before over the years. If it was what he thought it was, Hiccup would have more than a missing leg to worry about. Best to wait for Gothi to determine it before he went on scaring the boy. "Probably just exhaustion," he lied. "Some herbal broth and some rest, you should be fine."
Hiccup got the sense his father wasn't telling him something, but said nothing. He felt too weak to push the matter. Besides, Gothi would know what's wrong soon enough.
A few minutes later, Gothi and Gobber arrived.
After much poking and prodding, Gothi had determined that it wasn't his leg that caused his collapse and that it had something to do with his brain. An invisible disorder that would require daily tonics to keep it at bay. It was unsure if it was permanent or would fade with time. Only time could tell.
Gothi encouraged Hiccup to tell his friends so that they wouldn't be caught off-guard or freak out if the disorder reared its ugly head in front of them. However, Hiccup knew he couldn't tell them or anyone. He was finally getting a bit of respect and treated like an actual Viking. If he went around telling people his brain was broken, he'd be an outcast again. No, it was better to hide it from everyone until he was sure he wouldn't lose his friends.

Okay run away Hiccup but he runs away after the red death cuz he’s like ‘nah fuck you lot you only like me cuz I lost my leg or sum shit idfk’ and years later (Rtte era) Toothless is found by the dragon riders and taken back to Berk against his will and then Hiccup shows up with a mask on and shit so no one on Berk knows it’s him yeah and then basically him and Stoick beat the shit out of each other cuz Hiccup is trying to get Toothless back and half way through the fight Hiccup’s mask gets knocked off and Stoick is like ‘omg SON!!?!?’ And then he refuses to fight him and it’s really sad and emotional and then Hiccup gets Toothless and leaves again and did I mention that I just watched act one of arcane season 2 and the broken up family trope has me fucking sobbing

XOXOX
As quietly as he can, Hiccup tries to open and close the front door to his home. It's late. Much later than he told his dad he'd be. And as luck would have it; his father sits at the fire. He’s been waiting for him, stoking its dying embers.
A pot hangs above it. Hiccup wonders if whatever used to be in it is still edible. He hasn’t eaten since this morning, but he doesn’t hunger for a hearty dinner.
Stoick knows he’s there, he knows he does. Even so, Hiccup tries to sneak past him up the stairs.
Unfortunately, he’s limping and that means he doesn’t get very far without drawing attention. His prosthetic is quite loud on the wooden floor. He can hear the stool under his father creak as the mountainous man rises.
Hiccup freezes just shy of walking up the stairs. His face is in a grimace, bracing himself for what could possibly turn into a lecture.
“You’re late,” his father starts, hands on his hips. It’s a very father-like way of standing and Hiccup can’t look at him.
“Uh, yeah. I, uh… I got held up,” Hiccup explains briefly.
“You got held up? While fishing?” Stoick asks. His son doesn’t need to look to know that at least one eyebrow is raised in suspicion. Not only did he return with no fish to show for his efforts, but the gear he has is not one would usually take with them on a trip to the nearest lake. Not unless his way of catching fish is by clubbing it over the head with the hilt of a sword.
He knows it’s a collapsible sword. Stoick doesn’t understand how it is in any way a reliable weapon.
“Uh, yea-yeah? Anyway, gotta go to bed. Need to get up bright and early tomorrow for work, right?” Hiccup chuckles awkwardly as he tries to cut this conversation short. He’s so tired. He’s tired and in pain and he wants to go to bed.
His father might’ve actually let him go with that one. Hiccup once earned the right to kill the Nightmare, but the dragon mysteriously disappeared and with it disappeared any hope of a connection between father and son.
Not because of Stoick, however. He assured him that they would catch another Nightmare to prove his worth with. It was Hiccup who suddenly pulled away and distanced himself from his father as far as he could go. It no longer feels like they even live in the same house anymore and Stoick has absolutely no idea why.
In a way, it broke the man and that’s why- three years later- he won’t question his son’s whereabouts anymore.
The rest of the village might complain to him about their lackluster heir, but he has lost the will to fight with his son. Hiccup is 18, if he couldn’t change to be one of them earlier, he’s not going to now. At least he still has his friends, for however long they’ll stick around. At least for the time being Astrid seems fond of him. Hiccup won’t let either of them cross this distance between them, but at least he doesn’t have just him and Gobber in his life.
Unfortunately for the both of them, however, he’s limping and his father is still his father.
“Son? Are you hurt?” Hiccup winces at the question.
He and Toothless made a bad fall, dislocating his weak knee. Astrid reset it, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still hurting and his knee isn’t still swelling.
But he can’t tell his dad that. He doesn’t know about Toothless or the missions they do together. No one in the village knows about the Dragon Riders and it’s for the best. If they did... He refuses to imagine what would happen to their dragons if they told anyone. It’s the one thing keeping Snotlout and the twins quiet about their secret.
“Uhm, I-I slipped. It was muddy out there and-and you know how clumsy I am, dad,” Hiccup makes an excuse and one his dad doesn’t believe. He sighs heavily and Hiccup’s chest constricts, he aches knowing that his dad is disappointed in him. They both know he’s lying.
From the corners of his eyes, he dares to look at his old man. Stoick rubs in his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose. He can see the migraine growing.
But just like they both know he’s lying, they also know that neither of them are trying anymore.
“Did you at least visit Gothi?” Stoick asks.
“Of course!” He responds eagerly.
Hopefully, it’ll ease his father’s heart. He hasn’t forgotten yet how he responded to his friends returning him to the village with a terribly mangle leg. The limb was nearly lost in an attempt to rid the Archipelago of the Red Death, but it was in vain. She’s still in that volcano, ruling with an iron fist and bringing death to the Barbaric Archipelago. He and the rest of the Dragon Riders almost lost their lives fighting this behemoth only to find out that she was quite untouchable. And so, the only alternative was to help dragons escape the nest.
“It’s, eh, a minor injury, so,” Hiccup gives him a thumbs up. He hopes to at least assure his father that he’s okay.
But his father sighs and walks back over to the stool to drop down onto it. He should be glad that his son is okay, he should be relieved, but all he can think of is how Hiccup is still lying to him and how he would’ve hidden his injury if Stoick hadn’t caught him.
Hiccup’s guilt grows, he looks away.
“Hiccup… son… When will you finally tell me the truth again?” The question is asked so quietly, he’s not even sure if Stoick meant for him to hear it.
“I don’t know, dad,” Hiccup responds even quieter and limps up the stairs. He heads up to his loft to drop down onto his bed and hopefully leave this day far behind him.

I noticed a heartbreaking detail while watching httyd 1 the other day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toothless was fighting for his life, thrashing and turning to get out of his restraints as Hiccup desperately tried to help him
Tumblr media
But then Hiccup was taken away
Tumblr media
And look at him
Toothless accepted death!! He was so sure that there was no way to get free alone that he was actually laying down in his restraints waiting for inevitable death
And no, he wasn’t just tired
Tumblr media
Because when Stoick appeared we can see that Toothless still had some fight in him

Stoick coughed again. "You can talk to me," said Stoick. "I've un-banished you." "So the exile is off, then, is it, Father?" asked Hiccup. "If I go and kill myself talking to this Beast from Hell, I will be considered Heroic enough to join the Tribe of Hooligans?"
Httyd, stop breaking my heart!
