Today's poll inspired by this post by @taleasoldastime-andspace, who was watching knife-making competition show Forged in Fire and asked the obvious lotr-related question, and @fistfuloflightning.
In the book, Narsil is broken into two shards (or possibly, only two large shards were recovered). In the movie, Narsil is shown in about five or six pieces. You can headcanon however many shards you like for your answer.
From Tolkien Gateway:
Elendil carried Narsil in the Battle of Dagorlad where it shone with the light of the Sun and Moon, and then in the Siege of Barad-dûr; but Sauron killed him and the sword broke into two pieces under him as he fell, and its light was extinguished. Elendil's son Isildur took up the sword and used its shard to cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron. Isildur took the shards home with him. Shortly before Isildur was killed in the second year of the Third Age in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, the shards were rescued by Ohtar, esquire of Isildur. He took them to Rivendell, where Isildur's youngest son Valandil was fostered, but Elrond foretold that it wouldn't be reforged until the One Ring was found again and Sauron returned.
From The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Part 2: Chapter 3: The Ring Goes South:
The Sword of Elendil was forged anew by Elvish smiths, and on its blade was traced a device of seven stars set between the crescent Moon and the rayed Sun, and about them was written many runes; for Aragorn son of Arathorn was going to war upon the marches of Mordor. Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light of the sun shone redly in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, and its edge was hard and keen. And Aragorn gave it a new name and called it Andúril, Flame of the West.

1930 Ford Highboy Coupe
There’s always lots of detail work with any build and this ’30 Ford highboy coupe is no exception. Look closely and you will find Craftworks Fabrication handmade steel motor mounts. The license plate and valve covers were painted by Jeremy Seanor of Luckystrike Designs. He also painted all the accompanying engine and tranny parts. The powdercoat was handled by Pittsburgh Powder Coat while the chrome plating was conducted by Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating.
The chassis is comprised of a Roadster Shop custom frame that was stepped, stretched, and features contoured ’32 Ford-style framerails. It was also then boxed, capped, and has hole punch flared front framehorns. From here the frame is outfitted with a Super Bell 4-inch drop, drilled and plated I-beam axle, low-profile monoleaf spring with Ridetech tubular shocks paired to custom-made drilled billet radius rods from Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop. Steering falls to the Flaming River box and a LimeWorks Hot Rod column topped with a four-spoke Billet Specialties Sprint Car–style leather-wrapped wheel. In back there’s a Currie 9-inch rearend outfitted with 3.70 gears, 31-spline axles, QA1 coilovers, a Pete & Jakes Panhard bar, and a parallel four-link setup. Braking is a combination of disc/drum front to rear. The forward braking dark gray–painted Wilwood Dynalite calipers are neatly hidden behind the Pete & Jakes finned backing plates. While in back the 9-inch is outfitted with 11-inch brakes, this time hidden beneath the SO-CAL Speed Shop finned drums all the while the chassis rides on a full set of 16-inch Dayton wire wheels wrapped with Coker/Excelsior rubber measuring 5.50R16 in front and 7.00R18 in the back.
All hot rods have something fun settled between the ’rails and beneath the hood (well if they have a hood). In the case of our ’30 Ford highboy coupe it sure appears to be a vintage Ford Y-block but after more than a cursory look we begin to see the telltale signs that there’s something more. Indeed, while it may look like a Ford it truly is a 376-inch LSX iron block, with aluminum heads and ARP studs, plus adapter-equipped small-block Ford (Windsor) valve covers all from Don Hardy Race Cars and then assembled by Talik and Marc Mullin. The intake is an Edelbrock LS dual quad with a pair of Thunder AVS EnduraShine carbs dressed in OTB air cleaners. Delivering the gas from the Tanks stainless reservoir is an Earl’s Performance billet fuel pump. More engine accessories include an MSD 6AL box to go along with the MSD billet Ford small-block distributor that functions through a timing cover adapter from Chevrolet Performance all the while using an MSD coil and Lokar vintage plug wires. Powermaster also supplied the alternator and starter, the battery is an XS Power AGM, and a Wegner Motorsports water pump is used as well as a Wegner front accessory drive unit. This 500-plus hp V-8 utilizes custom headers made at Craftworks Fabrication based on Ultimate Headers LS header flanges. The pseudo-Ford small-block is backed up to a TCI StreetFighter 700-R4 with a 2,800-stall speed converter operated by a Lokar shifter. The trans cooler comes by way of Derale Performance and moves the power through a 3-inch-diameter custom-made driveshaft.

A Carolingian Sword and Scabbard, 9th century.
The blade has a 3-layer core of mild steel over high carbon steel, and high carbon steel edges.
Hot-welded in the fullers are the famous "+ULFBERH+T" mark on one side, and "III XX III" on the other, in pattern-welded 1075 and 15N20 steel - this latter thing being, in my educated opinion, no less important than the other side. Many things have been said about such marks, but the most important thing about them is that they exist (otherwise, to paraphrase Sir Terry Pratchett, it wouldn't be a real sword, just a very dangerous bit of sharp metal) and that they are but one aspect of the continuous function of the sword to carry a message/prayer/ritual thing, a thing appearing as early as the Bronze Age and which would continue up to the Renaissance if not after - working in conjunction with the scabbard to utter/read these spells when the sword is drawn or put back in the scabbard.
The hilt is inspired by sword FG2187 of the Germanisches National museum, found near Mannheim, and is mild steel overlaid in brass and silver (thanks to Matt Bunker for the close-ups), with silver details.
For the grip I drew inspiration from a sword found in river Shannon in 2012 for the placement of the linen threads under the leather cover, which provide both a decorative function and a nice feeling in hand. The overall shape of the grip was determined by stylistic elements of various swords of other types.
The scabbard is leather over linen over steam-formed wood, and lined with 100% wool cloth, stitched at the throat with pure silk thread. I chose not to give it a chape, the end being reinforced by a thick wrap of folded linen bands, as according to Dr Geibig's works. Decoration was made using thread glued under the leather cover.
Cheese glue was used for all this.
The suspension system of leather and brass is loosely made after the finds from the Isle of Man (Cronk Moar and Balleteare). The main issue I had was the bottom D-ring/strap thing, and here I propose a simple arrangement of a leather strap riveted to the buckle plate, and made to fit tightly the scabbard when wet. Upon drying, the strap would shrink and securely fit between the two risers.
The strap ends are in the Trewhiddle style, and were made using the historical process of drawing out a billet and chiselling in the decoration, accordingly to the PhD by Gabor Thomas. No casting involved there.
The making of this project owes a lot to the labours of Dr Mikko Molainen, to whom I address all my thanks.
This whole thing needed an awful amount of trial and error, and I am well aware that not everything is perfect there. Apart from the issues mentioned above, the main difficulties were the hot-inlaying/welding of the marks, but I do thing that most of them came from using modern steel - old/bloomery iron, especially with the proper content in phosphorous (wink at @gaelfabre) would have made the welding easier I think. I'll have to give it a try some day.

The Timeline—
Au Masterlist!!
Lucia Fantilli was kind of lonely in the sense that her brothers have always been considered one and she's always been the other.
The boys grew up in billets families in the States and she remained at home in Ontario with her parents.
She visited Chicago often when her brothers played for the Steele, the city holding a special place in her heart, so obviously when thinking about colleges University of Chicago was a big contender.
The boys tried to get her to go to Umich with them, but she knew Michigan wasn't the school for her.
Chicago offered her a soccer scholarship, so the decision was practically made for her
She lived her first year in a single dorm and worked at the library, she met her best friends and future roommates this year.
Christmas rolled around and so did the WJC which was taking place in Halifax, as we know Adam played, meaning that Lucy and the rest of the Fantilli family all found their way to the East Coast to celebrate Christmas and to watch the boy represent his country.
This is where she meets Connor for the first time, just a simple greeting at the beginning of the championship, and a warm congratulations after they take home gold.
She was a little starstruck by it all as he smiles sweetly and heads back to find his family.
Lucy then says her goodbyes to her brothers and parents as she makes her venture back to Chicago to finish out her freshman year.
The rest of the school year is very calm, she flies down to Tampa to watch the Frozen Four, they lose, and then Adam wins the Hobey Baker.
Many tears are shed as he gives his is speech, mentioning her as she cries with Luca in the crowd.
She truly does love her brothers, but sometimes it's a little bittersweet
She flies back to Toronto after exams end to work and hang out with her hometown friends, Luca is with the Umich boys in Florida, and Adam is headed off to Worlds then to the cup playoffs for prospect media and then finally the combine.
Next, it is the week of the draft, and the Fantillis are in Nashville, they'd been invited out to the NHL awards.
She gets lost in the crowd and separated from her family as they walk the carpet, her eyes find Connors as he ushers her over after seeing the panicked look on her face.
They walk the carpet together, he shyly compliments her dress as he greets fans and stops for interviews. Both of them were overwhelmed by the chaos that surrounded them, but both of them kept their smiles as they entered the building where their respective families were waiting for them.
Luca does not like the look of whatever that was, Adam thinks Connor is harmless so he's fine.
Draft Day is more chaotic than the night before, tears in her eyes as she watches Adam get called up into the stage 3rd overall.
He took her by surprise as he pulled her into his chest first, before Luca, a short “I'm so proud of you, I love you Mo,” leaving her mouth as he hugged his twin, a quiet “thank you for being my best friend,” leaving his mouth as she squeezed him even harder.
He's on that stage, displaying the little “Momma • Dad • Luca • Lucia” on the top of his vest as she cries even harder as he looks up to his family and he takes in his moment.
After the tears are dried and the media is in progress the Fantillis leave the crowd in search of the boy.
Lucy runs into Connor once again, congratulating him on being first, he makes a little comment about her dress and how she seemingly looks prettier every time he sees her, she's red in the face but she sums it up to the adrenaline he must be feeling in that moment.
After the draft ended all of the families headed out for dinner and other celebrations, and just after that was a draft party for all of the draftees held by the league.
It's a great time, she somehow finds her way next to Connor as she talks to Rutger’s older sister about the concert at the award show the night before.
She follows him out into the hallway as he's taking a break from the noise and the pictures that are currently taking place between draftees, their families, and past teammates.
“You okay?” she asks a little worried, “been a long day, that's all,”
It was very quiet between them as she sat down on the hall floor next to him, back pressed against the wall, “can't even start to imagine what you've been dealing with,” she whispered, “I would crumble,” she jokes as he shrugs and tells her that it's just part of the bigger picture, he's put up with it for his dream.
She finds him inspirational, he's the same age as her, yet he's so much more than her in the way that he has established a name for himself and he's living out his dreams. She doesn't have dreams, just a need to never be forgotten.
Heavy tipsy flirting follows the vulnerability as he whisks her away from the party, and they somehow find their way to his single hotel room.
Both of them wake up very early, in a bit of a panic because whatever happened between them is not normal behaviour for either of them. She rushes to get dressed and to find her hotel so her family doesn't go looking for her.
Fast forward a few months and she's moving into her apartment, her new roommates Lily and Daisy are unpacking the car as they take the plethora of boxes up the elevator to their new home for the year.
In Lucy’s hands is the last box out of the car, she waits for the elevator, excitement in her chest as she awaits the decorating process upstairs in her new room. She gets in the elevator and the doors begin to shut but not before someone slips in at the last second and presses the button for the floor above hers.
A very familiar “sorry” leaves his lips as they both look at each other with shock in their eyes.
A breathy “hey” left her lips as he stared at her in shock before a quiet “Lucy,” left his mouth, almost sounding like something of a relief.
“You live here?” she nods, “I'm moving in right now,” she subtly shakes the moving box in her hands as she smiles at him.
The elevator dings and the door opens, “please don't be a stranger, text me and maybe we can get coffee or something,” she says coolly as she walks off of the elevator and turns to him with a sweet smile.
But the second that door shuts her jaw drops and her eyes go wide as she stands in shock for a second before making a beeline to her apartment to tell her roommates.

Ah, my mistake, I misread Ripcord's page.
I mean, I got sat down with a knife and two forks And made to eat my words there. The primary reason 4140 and unlined barrels are for the trash is because there is no reason to settle for them. QPQ barrels are just as cheap, have 100% of the benefits, and 0% of the detriments.
The difference between that And 6061 versus 7075 aluminum is price! Keep in mind, I was under the impression that BCM And Daniel's defense both used 7075 rails. Essentially only a dozen manufacturers make real 7075 T6 rails, and they're all expensive. But hundreds of people make 6061 T6 rails. And cheap.
Now- the performance gap metallurgically is still massive:
But as was pointed out to me WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT YOU NEED 572 MPa TENSILE STRENGTH FOR YOUR RAIL?? You can shoot a rifle without a rail push comes to shove- a rail is optional. You can use the rifle without it as long as the barrel nut is intact.
Where 6061 vs 7075 actually matters a lot is the receivers. 100% you want 7075 receivers. Especially the upper. Your steel bolt carrier is... Steel. And it rides against the upper, trigger pins rotate too. A 6061 receiver will wear massively faster than a 7075 one.
It's really only a consideration with billet receivers, But unless it's going to be a safe Queen, you don't want a 6061 receiver.

“Nothing sexier then a fictional man suddenly noticing an injury on their love interest and going unnaturally still, their eyes darkening, their voice hardening with deathly quiet as they say "who did this to you?"
I can so see this with Bucky😘😅
Nonnnyyyyy I’m weak.
I’ve been stewing and simmering on this and cooking a lil’ somethin’ up for ya. I’m going to write it in what I am now calling the songbird universe (a sure sign this is going to turn in a fic someday) as a follow-up/related to this ask.
Reader injury, classism under the cut
Your interactions with the handsome American Major had not gone unnoticed by the well born girls
They had gone out of their way to bat their eyelashes at him, flaunting their perfectly coiffed hair and polished accents, yet he continued to seek you out in his free moments
Asking naive questions about crops or trying (in vain) to help you round up the cows that one time they ran amuck across the base
The last straw was apparently when he’d asked you to attend the dance with him that night, within earshot of them all
They’d set up a trap for you in the barn, knowing you were usually the last to file in for the night, burying a pitchfork beneath the straw so you might step on the tines and lever the handle into your unsuspecting face
It worked with brutal precision, the wood handle with its metal core cracking against your eyebrow sharply making you cry out in pain as they dashed off into the evening, their cruel laughter echoing in their wake
You stumbled back with tears of pain and mortification streaming down your face
By the time you made it back to your billet your eye was barely open and tender to the touch, the mother of the family you were quartered with clucking and fussing to get some ice on it as the rest of the girls filed past in their lovely dresses to head to the dance
“Don’t worry we’ll tell him you changed your mind”
Dashed up to bed knowing there was no way you could show your face, this face at the dance
Were working out in the field the next day when you heard his voice chatting with some of the other officers
Carefully turned your back to continue working but the wind caught your hat and your quickly spun to to try and grab it and suddenly his voice died on his lips as his eyes landed on your face
You rapidly looked down, giving your hat up for lost, but the sound of his footsteps swishing through the barley followed by his hand gently landing on your shoulder sealed your fate
“Songbird, who did this to you?” His voice had a sharpened edge to it, not unlike honed steel, and you frowned, shaking your head quickly
“Freak accident with a pitchfork…” you lied, glancing up at him slowly
He gently pinched your chin in his thumb and forefinger, though the tension in his body was anything but gentle
“I’ve had my fair share of shiners in my life…you got this last night didn’t you. The very night you ‘changed your mind’ about coming to the dance with me?” He raised an eyebrow skeptically and you gulped painfully
“Was it the stuck up blonde or her brunette friend with the horse teeth?” He asked
You guffawed at his irreverent choice of words and he grinned slightly, pressing his lips to your forehead just above your swollen, split brow
