Members of the Bremen city guard, late 17th century
Armed with muskets, bows and two-handed swords, the members of the Bremer Schuttenfahne ("musketeer´s company") had the duty to protect their city during war and conflict. While both men wear the black uniforms of their company, there are slight differences based on their ranks. While the Freischütze ("marksman") on the left wears full breeches and a black sash, the Angehender Schütze ("aspiring marksmman") on the right is dressed in more modest clothing, wearing a leather baldric and slim breeches.
The higher rank of the Freischütze is also indicated by his metal gorget and his massive two-handed sword, which might have been purely symbolical at this point. Both men wear black shoes with red heels, a popular design choice in the 17th century.
Drawing from the Koster-Chronik, ca. 1685

Since people seem to like my pride outfit!
To answer questions: the shield is painted by me, the flag is handstitched, and my biceps are huge. 😌
