Today I have a meeting with my Ty Hafan Family Support Worker. It’s to discuss my advance directive and updating my funeral plans. Don’t worry, I’m not planning on needing them anytime soon! But the reality of living with a degenerative, life threatening condition is that any day could be my last, and in true obsessive compulsive style, I like to be prepared. These documents are my safety net; always there when I need them. I did my first one of these when I was about 14. My parents have never been involved; it’s always been me. This is for a fairly simple reason; my mum admits that my parents would say yes to anything to keep me alive... the whole point of an advance directive is having my decisions known, and being able to tell my team what treatments I don’t want, and when I want them to stop. I can’t explain how I’m feeling right now. Already my stomach is full of That Yucky Feeling, as The Davies Clan call it. But I also know it’s really important for me, and for my loved ones, that I do this. The irony is not lost on me that this appointment falls on Dying Matters week... I gotta put my money where my mouth is, right?! Can’t be telling y’all to talk about death whilst avoiding the subject myself! I will be going swimming this morning, which I know will help my anxiety. But for after, please send me something happy? It can be a photo, or telling me something good about your day? Feeling a bit better today. Yesterday was a good day too. I’ve been eating better and more substantial meals. It’s taking time and it’s typically one meal a day and a snack but I’m noticing I’m feeling better. I’ve lost a lot of muscle mass and can see it which is mega disappointing but I’ve added a few carbs in the past day or so to try and bumper start me. This has been so hard to do! Carbs are not the enemy always and they can play a good role. I haven’t done this in years deliberately but I’ve been advised to add a few in. It’s taking me much longer to recover than I thought but I’m now having regular blood tests (every 72 hours) to monitor my white cell count and my neutrophils and check the levels are increasing. They are, but slowly. It’s probably why I’ve felt so exhausted! It’s like I’m trapped inside a crappy body with no energy. Yesterday I did my longest walk so far- about a mile and a half and today we are out and about so I’m focusing on taking it easy but also at least moving my legs! I still have to be careful of infection risk and thanks to some lovely mummy friends I have my @nyr_official hand sanitiser spray which I’m using regularly. Can’t be too careful!
