🚀 Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?
🌻 How often do you read your own fics?
🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?
🚀 Do you like to outline your fic first or create as you go?
Depends. Multichapter outline is necessary absolutely. Oneshot - sometimes. Usually I just have an idea in mind of what I want to happen and where I want to go, but sometimes especially if I know it'll be longer, I'll create sort of a bullet list of points I need to hit to keep me on course.
🌻 How often do you read your own fics?
Hmm, every so often? I definitely do read them and especially my multichapters I will read earlier chapters as I'm working on later ones to make sure that I am keeping with consistency. I'll probably do a re-read of Summer Heat before I start outlining Golden Visions because I planted a lot of plot points in it. Also, I just genuinely like the fics I write which is why I write them. I write what I like to read.
🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?
Omg, right now selfishly I want someone to make a fanart of Eris and Alexius in any fic they are featured in. Pull Me in Deeper, Taste of You, Summer Heat, my drabbles... whatever. I just want to see Eris and my OC together in the same picture. It would be the coolest thing ever and I would DIE. I have thought about commissioning something and there might be something in the future soon. I will say, when people have made fanart of my fics/characters, whether they've been shared yet or not, I am ALWAYS so excited and overwhelmed and just bask in the beauty. Literally nothing is as good as seeing another artist make art of your art. <3 I feel the same way when people make moodboards of my fics too. I just love how giving this fandom is.

Meet the seven new frog species we just named after iconic Star Trek captains!

At the right time of year along rushing streams in the humid rainforests that stretch the length of Madagascar's eastern and northern mountain ridges, otherworldly trills of piercing whistles can be heard.
Are they birds? Insects? Communicator beeps? Tricorder noises?
No, they're little treefrogs!

Until recently, we thought all of the populations of these little brown frogs across the island were one widespread species, Boophis marojezensis, described in 1994. But genetics in the early 2000s and 2010s showed that there were several species here, not just one.
Now my colleagues and I have shown that they are in fact eight separate species, each with unique calls!
These whistling sounds reminded us so much of Star Trek sound effects that we decided to name the seven new species after Star Trek captains: Boophis kirki, B. picardi, B. janewayae, B. siskoi, B. pikei, B. archeri, and B. burnhamae.

I subtly and not-so-subtly built some Star Trek references into the paper, but probably the best one is this one:
'Finding these frogs sometimes requires considerable trekking; pursuing strange new calls, to seek out new frogs in new forests; boldly going where no herpetologist has gone before.'
— Vences et al. 2024
There’s a real sense of scientific discovery and exploration here, which we think is in the spirit of Star Trek.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are at least two Trekkies amongst the authors (including yours truly). As fans of Star Trek, we are also just pleased to dedicate these new species to the characters who have inspired and entertained us over the decades.
On a personal note, this marks a milestone for me, as it means I have now described over 100 frog species! I am very pleased that the 100th is Captain Janeway's Bright-eyed Frog, Boophis janewayae (if you count them in order of appearance in the paper)—she is probably my favourite captain, and I really love Star Trek: Voyager.
You can read more about the discovery of these new species on my website! You can also read the Open Access paper published in Vertebrate Zoology here.

8. any reacquiring dreams? 27. any nicknames? 32. how many tabs do you have open right now?
8. any reacquiring dreams?
I'm going to assume this is supposed to be reoccuring lol. I have a lot of reoccuring dreams about tornadoes, orcas, my teeth falling out, and forgetting how to drive.
27. any nicknames?
Not really. I've always gone by my name instead of something like Mandy. I had two best friends in high school that called me Chubs for a while (not related to my weight).
32. how many tabs do you have open right now?
One my desktop - 2. On my phone - 17.

This is petty fandom salt, BUT... I've been chewing on this phenomenon that I've been calling "Fandom's Darling". It is related to things like "Author's Darling" and "Mary Sue / Gary Stu" and "Protagonist Halo" and all that jazz, where one character gains a peculiar narrative weight in a story.
"Author's Darling" is when a writer has a favorite character, and the world and all other characters sort of get... warped to put the Darling in the spotlight. It's most noticeable in TV shows with multiple writers, when a character you personally like suddenly has their previous characterization destroyed to make another character look good somehow. Every other character might become weirdly incompetent. The Darling's feelings are treated as The Most Important Feelings in any given situation. The logic of the fictional world seems broken past suspension of disbelief in order to validate this one character's beliefs or skillset or some other fantasy. And so on.
"Fandom's Darling" is what I've been calling the pattern where a fandom essentially crowns a New Protagonist for their fanfiction stories (it's often a side character rather than the original protagonist, but it can also happen to protagonists). This character becomes the self-insert for all sorts of indulgent fantasies, gaining special powers or backstories, and/or becoming the focus of extreme whump, and/or hooking up with all the various hotties, starring in all sorts of tropey AUs, and so on. They're not always an obvious Mary Sue version of themselves, but the character's original personality and interpersonal relationships tend to get warped or dropped completely, and other characters tend to become a little flat around them. I call it "Fandom's Darling" because it's not just one self-indulgent fantasy fic (you do you! Have fun!) with characterization choices that I don't vibe with (I have neither the time nor the desire nor the authority to police anything, I am just venting), but rather a prolific mini-fandom of sorts revolving around this empty doll / fanon version of the chosen vessel character, so it becomes a little unavoidable.
I am salty about this (mildly frustrated) (imagine a soft sigh of disappointment before I just go do something else) because you are FUCKED if you actually liked the canonical version of this character and their interpersonal relationships. It's almost worse than liking an obscure character that no one cares about. There's about a thousand fics starring your fave, but maybe only about a dozen of them are actually rooted in any kind of recognisable canon.

Ok I’m being so brave about it but a couple of days ago I saw this post claiming that the Jedi saying ‘this weapon [your lightsaber] is your life’ is emblematic of ‘the Jedi’s failure as peacekeepers’ (not an exact quote but pretty close) because why would a weapon be the life of a peacekeeper?
And like. The Jedi are a culture. They’re a religion.
You know that, right? You know that many cultures, including generally peaceful ones, have sacred weapons, right? You know that the bond between a Jedi and their crystal(s) is an extremely sacred thing that requires the consent of both parties and is integral to their way of life, right?
You know that lightsabers are not intended to be only for killing, right? That the first thing Luke learns to do with his lightsaber is to shield and defend? You know that a culture having sacred weapons doesn’t mean that they view killing as sacred, right?
Not trying to start shit, I don’t even remember who said it, but ugh
