A Month of Whump Day 5: Sickfic
Fandom: Star Wars The Clone Wars
Summary: Cody falls in love and catches a certain flowery disease.
Love is such a strange thing. Cody didn't realize it could be so deadly. At first he was unsure of what was going on. He had just coughed up a few sunflower petals. Holding them in his hand he decided to go see Kix. It felt like something he shouldn't go to his medic for, why he wasn't sure.
Cody walked around until he found him. "Kix, I need to talk to you."
"What's going on Commander?" Kix asked.
The commander pulled Kix into a nearby empty hallway and showed him the flower petals.
"Sunflower petals?" The medic felt uneasy. Cody wouldn't get him for something that wasn't serious. "I don't understand."
"I...coughed them up." Cody looked down. "I'm not sure why."
The medic just stared at him for a moment, "you.. coughed them up?"
    "Yes."
"Let me look into this. I'll come find you when I know. For now just drink water and let me know if anything changes." With that he left.
Cody walked back to his room. On the way he started coughing again. He felt the flower petals coming up and after a few seconds they were in his hand. This time the petals from a pink Dahlia.
Not quite an hour later Kix hunted Cody down. After checking just about everywhere he finally looked in the general barracks. There Cody was sitting with Waxer. The clone had a hand on his commander's back while Cody sat with his forearms on his thighs.
"I found out what's going on." Kix started.
Cody sat up and nodded his head.  Waxer looked over at Kix, "good. So what is it?" The lieutenant had found Cody in the hall with the pink petals in hand. He didn't seem like he felt very well so he took him to the barracks.
Kix kneeled down in front of the bed and started to explain. "It's called Hanahaki disease. It comes from unrequited or perceived unrequited love. Flowers grow in the victim's lungs. There are two ways to get rid of it, surgery; which will remove your feelings for the person, and for the person to be in love with you."
"Love?" Waxer looked at Cody, "who are you in love with?"
Cody just looked at the two. What would they think? The man was in love with his superior. It was inappropriate.
"Someone I could never have." Cody sighed.
"What does that mean?" Kix asked.
"You love the general don't you?" Waxer stated. "I see the way you interact with him, the way you look at him."
Cody was quiet. Silently he nodded. "Your best opinion then is the surgery." Kix spoke.
    "No, not yet."
"Sir, this can and will kill you if you don't act on it." The medic stood up.
"Have you told him?" Waxer stood as well.
    "No."
    "Well then you have to."
Cody didn't say anything. Instead he stood up and walked away. He couldn't tell him. He could tell his general that he fell for him. He would just have to deal with the flowers for now.
As time went on the disease got worse. Cody's lungs were being overtaken by Sunflowers and Dahlias. He was tired and in agonizing pain all the time. Breathing felt like he was being stabbed by a million tiny needles. The worst part was this cursed illness affected his leadership. The clone couldn't do as much as he used to. Some of his brothers caught on and tried to help where they could. No one knew what was going on and he wouldn't tell. When Obi-wan caught on he too did whatever he could.
Something about the feeling of dying calmed Cody. It proved he was alive in the first place; that he wasn't some droid. He was in love.
Waxer and Kix continued to press, trying to convince him to get the surgery or to talk to the general. He refused to do both. The clone commander was scared of the answer if he confessed. He was unsure of what would be worse, if Obi-wan didn't feel the same or if he did. The two would be stuck knowing that they loved each other but could never act on any of their feelings because of the Jedi code. Of course Obi-wan could always hate him afterwards. But if he got the surgery he wouldn't love Obi-wan and the thought of that was something he couldn't bear.
Now the battalion was preparing for battle. It was the night before and time to sleep. Cody couldn't really sleep anymore. His inability to breathe well kept him awake. When he finally did fall asleep he woke up to a stabbing pain in his neck. Rubbing his hand over it he paused. A flower had grown through his neck. It felt like a sunflower. Unsure of what to do he went to find Waxer.
When Waxer was woken up in the middle of the night he thought something had happened with the enemy. It wasn't until he was the flower that he understood what was going on. "What the fuck?" He sat up. "I didn't know it could do that."
"I didn't either. What do I do now?"
"How am I supposed to know? I'll call Kix."
After a moment Kix answered, "what's going on?" In the background the two could hear the sounds of war.
"There's a flower sticking out of Cody's neck." Waxer spoke quietly.
    "Good Kriff."
"Can we cut it out?" Cody asked panicked.
    "Yes but be extremely careful!"
"Got it. Be careful!" Waxer replied.
"Thanks Kix." Cody turned off the comm. Then Waxer went to find scissors or a small knife. Cody started coughing again. This time blood came out with a full Dahlia. The clone struggled to breathe, both from panic and the injury. His throat was raw and it showed in his voice.
When Waxer returned Cody was struggling to breathe. Not that he hadn't been but it was worse than normal. When he saw the Dahlia covered in blood and the sunflower in the commander's hand he commed the medic and the general quickly.
Boil had heard the noise and ran over to the two. He kneeled beside Cody and tried to help him breathe. After another flower escaped his mouth he started to breathe a little better.
Obi-wan was the next to arrive. "Waxer what's going on?" Then he saw Cody. Without thought he immediately rushed over to the man. Boil moved and Obi-wan took his place. "Cody what's wrong.?" The flowers took him by surprise. "Who?"
    "Who?" Cody whispered.
"Who are you in love with?"
It clicked with the others before Cody. Obi-wan was a Jedi of course he knew what Hanahaki was. The disease would give away any Jedi that broke the code.
Cody finally gave in, "you, sir."
There was silence for a moment. "Dear, you should have told me sooner."
"That's a good sign" Waxer whispered over to Boil. He looked over to his brother confused, "Waxer what's going on?" Waxer would quietly explain the situation while the others talked.
Obi-wan moved closer to the commander and placed his forehead on the others, "I love you too."
Relief hit everyone. Relief turned into dread as Cody relieved something. The two were in love. Obi-wan was a Jedi and he was a clone. There was the code, their ranking, and a war stopping them.
"Are you okay?" Obi-wan asked. Cody broke out of his thoughts and opened his eyes. Looking into the Jedis bright blue eyes he felt safe. Kenobi had that effect on people.
"Yeah." The next day Cody stayed back by order of Obi-wan and the medic.
Time would pass and Cody would heal. It took about a week for all the flowers to get out of his system. It took a little longer for him to feel strong again. The lovers talked and decided they would act on their feelings, no matter how dangerous it could be. They loved each other and nothing could stop that. Sunflowers and Dahlias could grew around them until one day their love would kill each other. Hopefully it would never come to that. Hopefully.

Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi for @febuwhump 2023 - day 15 "Self Sacrifice"
Flowers? Yes. Hanahaki is the disease of flowers, when you know or think you are not reciprocated in romantic feelings.
As the Jedi are inspired by Japanese culture (samurai) Hanahaki is also a Japanese myth. IF we tie it to the world of users of the light side of the Force we can consider Hanahaki as a "getting sick in the Force, that's why attachments are also avoided." In the year Obi-Wan was on the run with Satine Hanahaki hit him hard. He was ready to leave the Jedi, to sacrifice his ideals and his beliefs, she however knowing how important the Jedi were to Obi-Wan refused to tell him that she loved him.

How could have Dick been so stupid?
He had never worked up the courage to tell Wally how he really felt, keeping him at a friend’s distance, and now that Wally had gotten together with Artemis, all of the hope he had been carrying was immediately thrown out the window.
Bruce was right.
Bruce had always told him that love was stupid; was pointless; was a distraction.
And now here he was: staring down at the orange poppy petals and blood he had just coughed up into his hands with a small sigh.
Served him right he supposed. With his best friend, no less. Dick sighed, flipping up his trash can lid and flicking the petals off of his hands before washing the blood off.
He grumbled to himself. “Of course the guy who calls me a manwhore is the person I fall for…”
Stupidity was what had gotten him into this situation, and stupidity would be his downfall. And yet he had also managed to fall for a stupid, stupid person who would never realize how much Dick was hurting, but he would never tell him.
Never in a million years.
He would continue with his friendship until his day came, up until his very last breath, until his lungs were filled with his speedster’s favorite flowers. He would make sure his only regret would be never telling Wally his feelings…
And then his gaze fell to one of his many notepads…
A soft, breathy laugh escaped Dick’s lips as the stupidest idea flooded his mind’s eye. He pulled out his chair, sat at his desk, and wrote out a long, heartfelt note to the person his heart, his entire being, belonged to, even if the boy he loved didn’t know it.
Dick kept his secret as long as he could, trying to calm any qualms his family had about why he wasn’t going on patrol anymore.
Alfred, of course, had been the first to know, since he cleaned all of the rooms. He was there to pat Dick’s back, to soothe the boy as he choked up the slowly-growing-in-size flowers blooming in his lungs, and shoving down his fears and worries and anxieties for the boy.
Jason had nearly punched a wall when he found Dick covered with blood and flower petals. He caught Dick right as he stumbled, the effort of coughing up the flowers making him dizzy. Jason had pushed past Alfred to get into Dick’s room (which wasn’t all that hard, given that Alfred had been half-heartedly guarding it per Dick’s request. Alfred had wanted the rest of the family to know; he didn’t want Dick to die without his family knowing the reason), and they both had gone into the room.
“Dammit!”
Jason hissed out, clinging to his older brother like a lifeline as he tried his gentlest to wipe away the blood and flowers from Dick’s mouth and chin. Alfred just watched in the background, leaning against the doorframe, all with a heavy heart.
Tim, despite himself, was the one who ended up finding out third. He had started following Dick whenever the older boy ran off, only to be left with the bloodied poppies that he would find in a trash can or strewn around the trash. A few hours of research later about the flowers and what they could mean, a panicked Tim ran through the house, trying to find Dick or one of the other family members as fast as he could.
Other siblings were told when found and joined in the search. An hour or so later, he was found in Jason’s room, curled up against Jason as Jason softly read a book out loud. All the siblings piled onto the bed, sobbing to each other.
Bruce was the last one to find out. All of the siblings stood around Dick as Dick and Bruce stared each other down.
When Dick finally broke the silence between them and spilled what was happening as well as the fact that he probably only had about one and a half weeks left, Bruce did a very un-Bruce-like thing. He got up and hugged Dick, nearly in tears as he squeezed his first everything in his arms.
First kid, first Robin, first sidekick.
First to truly die.
For the rest of Dick’s time, the family spent as much time with him as possible. They still had to go out on patrol, of course, to keep the illusion that nothing was happening, so they started scheduling times so people could alternate and switch up so they could all spend time with Dick.
Bruce might’ve been right when he had said that love was stupid; was pointless; was a distraction.
But, damn it, it was the best distraction Dick could ever ask for.
Jason had been the one home when it happened.
He heard Dick’s raspy breathing and his wheezing and Jason went running. His book was strewn on the floor, the boy nearly slipping as he rushed to find Dick.
Almost fully grown poppy plants were thrown around Dick. He was on his hands and knees, blood trickling down his mouth as he tried to cough. Jason fell down next to him, and he grabbed the older boy into his arms, trying to soothe him by rubbing his back.
“Shh, shh, you’re okay, you can do this, breathe.”
“Jay…” Dick started, tugging slightly at Jason’s sleeve, “It… it was Wally.”
Jason looked down, confused slightly. “What was Wally?”
“These flowers,” Dick murmured, coughing hard. He could feel the flowers crawling up his throat, and he was slowly starting to panic. “There’s a note on my desk for him. Please, Jay.”
Jason froze.
Dick hadn’t told anyone who he had fallen for, and now here he was, talking fast in an attempt to get everything out before he couldn’t.
“Dammit, dammit, please, Dick!” Jason pulled Dick closer, trying to pat Dick’s back to soothe him. “C’mon, no, not yet…”
Dick curled up against Jason and was wheezing as he tried coughing up the fully formed orange poppy plants. Tears dripped down his face, his cerulean eyes bloodshot as he sobbed and coughed.
The only thing Jason could do was hold his brother, bringing him comfort, and watch as he died in his arms.
A final, pitiful wheeze brought tears to Jason’s eyes. The poppy plant poked out of Dick’s mouth ever so slightly, the roots finally overtaking Dick’s lungs and finally - and painfully - suffocating Dick to death.
Jason let out a choked noise, his shoulders trembling as his anger and sadness and grief welled up inside of him.
His brother was gone, and it was because of Wally.
“DAMMIT!!”
Wally would be gifted an envelope, a few weeks later after it had been written, at a small funeral for the Boy Wonder.
A very pissed-off Jason had been the one to drop off the letter, practically shoving it at Wally before storming out of the building where the funeral had been held. Despite Wally’s shock at the rougher display from the second-oldest-now-oldest Wayne kid, curiosity overtook the redhead as he noticed the softly drawn poppy flowers on the orange envelope, and he opened it up as well as slipped the note out. His green eyes scanned over the page, widening both from the blood and petals that covered the note and the inside of the thick envelope, but also from the words themselves:
Thursday, February 1st
Dear Wally, Happy Valentine’s Day. With the way these flowers are growing, I’d say I have about two weeks left at the very least, and I need to get this out now before I no longer have the chance. I love you, West, you naive speedster. I’ve loved you with all of my heart, and I have for all these years. For as long as I’ve been harboring these feelings, I had hoped they would dissipate. Alas, I see now that those feelings have brought around the end for me, and yet I don’t regret it. I’ve loved you, even if in secret, and damn it, loving you was the greatest thing I could ever do. I got to be the shoulder you cried on; the hand that you held through your darkest times; the annoying sun that reflected into your eyes off of your side mirrors. You were my world, Wally, and you’ll never truly comprehend how much you meant to me. Especially now, considering, well, I’ll probably (definitely) be dead when you read this. I’ll reiterate this again, since it probably wouldn’t have gone through your thick skull the first time around: I love you, Wally Rudolph West
(P. S. your red hair still matches his nose, by the way).
Wally couldn’t help but giggle a little at the little end message, but the small laughter quickly broke down into sobs, Wally hiccuping as he cried and sank down to the floor. His shoulders shook uncontrollably as he wailed in the grief that came crashing down on him.
His best friend, his best friend, had secretly fallen for him all these years, and had never felt safe enough to tell him until after he was dead. He cried alone in his corner for a while, being unbothered as mostly everyone else was crying or stuck in their own little worlds of grief, until he started coughing.
He coughed into his fist, wheezing slightly from all his tears, when he felt something fall into his fingers. His eyes shot open, and his fist uncurled, his fingers sticky with his blood. He gasped, and he nearly cried out.
Deep, cerulean blue aster petals were sitting ever so innocently in the palm of his hand.
Love was stupid, Wally told himself, quoting the words Dick had once told him. But he was a very very stupid man.
And stupid he would be, all the way up until his final breath.
“I’m feelin’ the aster, Rob,” Wally murmured aloud to himself, tears slipping down his face as he laughed hoarsely.
“Feelin’ the aster…”

Variations on the Hanahaki trope:
Hamahocki: Deeply in love with a nearby farmer, you expectorate ham hocks until you're forced to confess
Hanahockey: Your love for your team is so strong that you cough up pucks until they win the Stanley Cup
HanaHockney: You hack out paint until you're forced to participate in the Pop Art movement (or possibly just pop)
Han-ahaki: You're made to spit flowers unless you admit that Han shot first
Hanatrekkie: Sorry, you have to confess your love for Star Trek if you want to stop growing Vulcan ears
Hanakhaki: Every day you wake up having regrown a new pair of beige cargo shorts. You can either make the necessary confession, or take a job at a fashion outlet for dorky dads.
Hannah-haki: Something something Miley Cyrus
Bananahaki: Unconfessed love for clown leads to dangerous banana peels everywhere

Not Obikin, but still Anakin and all he never said to Obi-Wan (the sand people, Padme, how he feels himself slipping, half-a-step away from a Fall).
And Obi-Wan. ("You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you." Dude. You couldn't say so, very plainly, in those words, years ago?)
Those two need to talk so bad.
Also, I loooove romantic trope made not-romantic. That is how you subvert expectations (*cough*sequels*cough*).
Gen/platonic ftw! 🎉👏💖👍
I think that more fanfiction should be written with the aim to tackle the original meaning of hanahaki. Because when the concept of hanahaki disease was originally created, it was intended to be a metaphor for suppressing one’s feelings.
Your feelings are this beautiful garden of flora inside of your chest. When you express how you feel honestly, you allow for it to grow freely. But when you hide how you feel out of fear of rejection, and try to make it smaller and smaller, the flowers become cramped inside of you, until you choke on your own feelings. Every flower you cough up is something you’ve felt, but refused to say.
The whole “dying” thing is intended to be more symbolic especially. You’re killing off bits and pieces of yourself and how you feel, because you’re afraid to express yourself.
It’s not really supposed to be, “The one I love doesn’t love me back, and I’m dying from it.” Rather, it’s more along the lines of, “Repressing your emotions is bad for you, and it’s better and healthier to express them freely, even when it’s scary.”
Which is to say that, one, the cure for the disease should be telling the person that you are in love with how you feel. How the other person feels about the person afflicted should have nothing to do with it, as the trope is meant to be about feeling your emotions unapologetically.
And that, two, it’s not an inherently romantic trope. Obviously, it has romantic applications, but it can be written for any situation where a character is hiding how they truly feel. This can include a refusal to address a specific trauma, a desire to indulge in something that they’re ashamed of, and even really practical things, like wanting to ask one’s boss for a higher position.
Although (as an aromantic person myself) I don’t agree with this conclusion about the trope, this application would also avoid people calling it arophobic. When the thing killing the character is a refusal to be honest with themselves, rather than an unrequited love, it’s on nobody’s hands but their own to save their life.
There are a ton of ways that this interpretation of the hanahaki disease could be applied in new and interesting ways in fanfiction, and I’d love to read what things people could come up with!
