Viggo stares beyond Hiccup, the rider lit from behind by the glow of his fleet in flames. His heart still races from being snatched from his own burning ship and hauled to safety, a fear he hasn't felt in ages rendering him speechless.

"Is this what you meant," Hiccup challenges, "when you said I could be so much more?"

Yes, Viggo thinks.

Now he only needs to get Hiccup to focus that ruthlessness on Viggo's enemies instead of his hunters.

not much to say here tbh—i like how this came out a lot consideirng how short of a time i spent on it! pose was ambitious & the head feels a bit small (not on the body, compared to the canvas. it is So Fucking Blurry but a bigger canvas makes my tablet vomit and die)

HTTYD Villain Ship Week Day 3~ Soulmates

Soulmate AU, where whenever you get injured, your soulmate takes on your injury.

When Hiccup came out of the battle with the Red Death, it was deemed a miracle that he was unscathed, most not seeing the missing shoe and pant leg with an unblemished leg underneath. Those who knew kept it from him, to help Hiccup not worry.

Most believed Viggo lost his leg to a dragon. The bite marks and jagged amputation was proof enough. However, Viggo, in the middle of a hunt, felt as though he were burning alive, his leg in sheer agony as he fell to the floor with no warning. He looked, only to find his leg missing, only his brother as his witness.

When Viggo heard of the Night Fury and his rider, suspicion grew. His bite matched that of a Night Fury, after all, and the scars on the riders neck seemed awfully familiar.

Soon, he knew who his soulmate was.

Then, Hiccup, a short time after seeing Viggo fall into a volcano, felt his face burn, as though he were torched by a dragon. He lost sight in his eye, and was bedridden for days.

Though he had no idea who his soulmate could be, Astrid started acting... suspicious, as if she knew something he didn't.

Then, he learned Viggo survived the volcano, miraculously escaping without a mark, and his world came crashing down.

HTTYD Villains Ship Week - Day 03 - Soulmates

When he was younger, Viggo’s spirit dragon was well behaved. The little nightfury was curious and prone to wandering, always flitting about in some manner, always observant in an almost unsettling way. Some called it mature though the soothsayer claimed it meant Viggo’s soulmate wasn’t born yet, so instead of displaying his partner’s current moods/personality it defaulted to some of the common traits they’ll share one day.

Then one day, long after Viggo assumed a change should have happened, the spirit dragon becomes playful. And clumsy. And reckless. Rather than perch at the corner of Viggo’s desk while he works, the nightfury pokes its face directly into his projects, claws at them until they come apart then watches raptly while Viggo begrudgingly puts them back together. Its flying becomes stilted and it’s not uncommon to see it tumble into tables and people and the sails of his ship and this goes on for years until a terrifying handful of months where the spirit sleeps, unperturbed by the dragon hunter’s efforts to wake it.

Even after waking, several more weeks are spent in exhaustion that no amount of sleep seems to cure. Viggo wonders what happened to his soulmate during that time.

The rest brings about its own changes. His spirit dragon still trips when it walks, but its flying transforms into graceful swoops and lifts like those that Viggo grew up watching, the same kind he recognizes when he sees a full sized nightfury dive at his ship for the first time.

Hiccup’s spirit dragon has always been arrogant. It hasn’t ever cared for most of the residents of Berk, always glaring and rolling its eyes and huffing at the posturing of vikings. The only exception was his grandfather, Old Wrinkly. The little nightfury adored the old man’s lessons and stories.

He always kind of disregarded it as not liking the way Berk treats him, but even after he’s accepted by his tribe, his spirit dragon continues to spit sparks at his friends (particularly when they pull some stupid stunt or add something inherently unhelpful to a conversation). It concerns him that his soulmate won’t like his friends, but surely there’s hope for improvement.

When Hiccup catches sight of Viggo glaring at the other riders, rolling his eyes to the ceiling when the twins go on one of their derails while captured, he has a sudden suspicion of who his soulmate is. He doubts the man will warm up to his friends.

Wait should I actually watch race to the edge like is it good

It is!! It's really good!! Is there filler? Of course there is, but I don't mind it when it's my favorite gang of hooligans and their dragons!

Something I've always loved about the franchise is the dragons, ofc. They're always so fun and imaginative! They introduce a lot of new ones in the show, some that are my favorites to this day! The Deathsong, the Singetail, Razorwhip, etc! It has the best villain in the franchise, my favorite, Viggo Grimborn. (Hella bonus points for him being voiced by Alfred Molina.) He's a great FOIL for Hiccup, and he really feels like a threat because the show demonstrates him being one.

RTTE is the bridge into HTTYD2, so there are some great tie ins and lead ins, especially towards the end of the show as we get closer to the events of 2. We get more time with Stoick, which I love to see, before his death in the film. It's a favorite aspect of the show to me.

I will say, if you havnt watched Rise of Berk/Defenders of Berk, you might be confused on a few things. That show, set right after HTTYD, introduced characters, plot points, and even dragons that show up in RTTE that you might be confused by. If you can, check out ROB/DOB too, a good show on its own! If not, I'm sure there's a recap on YT, or you can just start RTTE and have questions answered with context clues and a little bit of exposition. The very first episode of RTTE starts with a major character from ROB/DOB escaping prison to jump start the plot, so, up to you!

So, yeah! All that to say, it's a wonderful watch. Probably my favorite piece of media from the franchise second to the first film.

god Viggo is such a theatre kid. Dude really dressed himself in a cloak and crouched in a dragon cage just to make his first encounter with Hiccup as dramatic as possible. What a loser, I love him so much.
