Inspired by this post: What if B'Elanna reveals to Harry that she feels insecure about not knowing much about her Human (Puerto Rican) heritage after two interactions at the beginning of the episode - one with Chakotay and one with Tuvok where they both display a deep connection to their heritages and cultural practices. Harry then reveals that he's also mixed - his mother being Chinese while his father's Korean. Like Chakotay, he wasn't very interested in cultural practices as a kid (he seems like he'd find them boring at a young age) and his parents didn't push him to participate or learn which was fine when he was a kid but as he got older he began to feel a sense of displacement, guilt, and frustration. It's easier to just be 'Human' rather than taking ownership of anything more specific, especially since to most people he's not visibly mixed, but with being away from his family he feels now more than ever that he wishes he'd connected to that heritage. He expresses the same yearning that B'Elanna brings to him - he's also noticed that Tuvok and Chakotay can connect to their parents, their people, their faith even so far away...that connection gives them a strength and assurance that both Harry and B'Elanna envy. He tells her about the Alter Ego coaching incident and B'Elanna tells him about the Meditation Fail. They both tease each other good naturedly. B'Elanna tells Harry about how Chakotay instructed her in some of his cultural practices (we see in 'Cathexis' that she has knowledge of these practices) and how she started being jealous then, specifically of how he can connect to and sort of amend his relationship with his father (which was rocky in life) THROUGH these practices and the faith he carries in them. She sometimes tried to do the same privately but it felt like acting, uncomfortable. B'Elanna's different from Harry, having been bullied for her Klingon side heavily, she wanted very much to claim her Human (Puerto Rican) heritage. She never saw it as something boring and often tried to connect with her cousins etc over it but they always pushed her away, asserting she was 'Klingon' and as 'Other.' After her father left, she seems to have been entirely cut off from her Human side of the family. When she grew enough to do her own research into her heritage, she felt overwhelmingly that it was already too late for her to connect to this side of herself. People already only call her "Klingon" though she's half Human. If she were to attempt to claim anything more specific, she'd surely just be laughed at. Harry smiles and bumps her shoulder with his own. "I'm not laughing," he says. "You're smiling." "I usually am." Then B'Elanna smiles too. Throughout the series (from that point on) we can see B'Elanna and Harry practicing Mandarin, Korean, and Puerto Rican Spanish. Though they start off just helping the other, they start to learn all three languages between them and sometimes have conversations as they're working together which become less and less stilted as time goes on. Harry even learns a bit of Klingon! This leads to B'Elanna's Human grandmother or something being the one to contact her instead of her no-good-space-racist-daughter-abandoning-terrible-scum-father and B'Elanna opening the conversation by speaking to her in Spanish, to the woman's unabashed delight. B'Elanna quickly wipes away a tear at hearing how proud the woman is of her, how she grew up so beautifully, how she was afraid she forgot all about them or hated them for what her father did to her family but she's so pleased that obviously isn't the case, not if she took the time to learn their language. Afterward, we see B'Elanna restless in her quarters. She gets up and begins a letter. It's to her mother, whom she still doesn't know the status of (her grandmother hasn't been in contact with her or B'Elanna's father). She starts in Standard then pauses and has the computer erase that entry, beginning again in Klingon. End.

Mrs Columbo is a lot more enjoyable if you realise that it’s Janeway on the holodeck living out her own fanfic of Columbo before she was made Captain.

It would also make her being in Murder She Wrote as 3 different people make complete sense.

Chakotays mama, tananka. I’ve been thinking about her for months cause a while ago I remembered an old interview with RB and how he discussed that he wished they’d talked about her more on voy :(. I’m fixing up my lore for her and will post soon, but here’s some basic info from a post a made last year about her.

She is incredibly intelligent and graduated high school by 16.

She went on to further her education and received her bachelor’s and master’s in history with a minor in psychology.

Her role on trebus is a historian, scriber, genealogist, and teacher (she teaches maya-glyphs and history).

She has a personal library that she allows other members of the community to use. Through this library she introduces chakotay to figures like John Kelly which sparks his interest in space travel.

Chakotay and Tananka enjoy spending time reading together, and it is their favorite activity. (He’s a mamas boy hehe. They have a better bond than he does with his father, but they still have their disagreements.)

I just again watched Janeway drink white wine in that one scene so buckle up, folks, I've given this entirely too much thought:

Janeway drinks red wine or Irish whiskey, neat. Period. That's it, that's the drink.

Tom went through an irritating tequila phase after a road trip down to Tijuana but has since settled in as a bourbon man in his old(er) age and because of that one time he woke up outside the Lucky Strike bowling alley with no memory of having gotten there.*

Harry defaults to a good old gin and tonic, figuring it's half-medicinal anyway and therefore better for him than some other options, but will accept a fruity concoction without complaint. He does not drink in front of his parents.

Tuvok drinks Vulcan brandy, naturally. In exquisite moderation.

B'Elanna is a lot more Romance-Novel than she wants to appear so I'm gonna go vodka here, maybe a cosmo, but I'm not wedded to it. She too would accept a fruity concoction if you can conceal that that's what it is from onlookers when you bring it over to her.

Cider for Chakotay. Not beer. Cider.

Wine coolers for Neelix, regrettably.

And something sparkling for Kes; and nothing for Seven 'til PIC.

FIRST KISSES

KATHRYN

the first kiss tasted like coffee, of course. fueled by caffeine, tempered with exhaustion, bathed under the light of a nebula. the galaxy had finally deemed it time to give voyager’s captain a break, and she decided to spend it with you. sat on the couch in her ready room together, just talking for hours with forgotten PADDs on the table, it was easy to lean in and kiss her carefully. she was tense for a moment - kathryn’s mask of command is rarely ever lowered all the way. but then your fingers graze softly over her cheeks, and she sighs against your mouth, and the tension leaves her body as if your kiss had lifted a heavy weight from her shoulders. 

she’s the first to pull back, grinning wide in a way you’ve never seen before. her eyes look purple in the deep red light of the nebula - like freshly bloomed lavender. it takes a lot not to go right back in for a second kiss. or a third. or a fourth.

CHAKOTAY

of course, chakotay was not going to allow the first kiss to be anything other than romantic. he planned a very nice dinner and prepared days in advance to have all his work done so you wouldn’t be interrupted. there were fresh flowers and gentle music and vegetables picked right from airponics - in the end, it didn’t make much difference. you probably would’ve still kissed chakotay even if he served leola root stew to the tune of klingon opera. and he was so eager to follow your lead. holding your face in his hands, not needing to say a word because you’re already leaning even closer to him and kissing you is the first time he’s felt so completely at peace in a long time.

neither of you even finished dinner. he replicated some tea under the guise of sitting on the couch and just talking - but really, it just led to more kisses. and even with the sharp taste of tea on your tongue, it’s not quite as sweet as the first. 

THE DOCTOR

your first kiss wasn’t how the doctor wanted it to go. he had a whole plan and was fretting over it for days. downloading subroutines, studying the database, deciding when and how he should go about it instead of just letting the moment come to him. and it came, whether it wanted it to or not - when you were dragged into sickbay, bloody mouth offering a smile to ease his worry. of course, the doctor would have none of it. his hands moved so quickly, his holographic stomach turning at the sight of you injured (even if you tried to tell him you were fine.) 

so, right there on the biobed, you gripped his arm and pulled him to stand between your legs. you kissed him hard enough to make the photons in his head burn out - and really, isn’t that what a first kiss should be? something that makes the world stop and your mind go blank and sets everything in the universe right? of course, when the doctor pulled back, you were still hurt. but suddenly, his hands were a lot more steady.

B'ELANNA

unbeknownst to b’elanna, your absolute favorite version of her is when she’s been cooped up in engineering all day. dirty, covered in grime - grouchy as any klingon could be but still retaining her special spark. it was really only a matter of time before you felt like you needed to kiss her when she was like this. b’elanna would argue after the fact. chastise you for not waiting for a better moment, in a better place, when she looked better to finally kiss her for the first time.

but it had been a long day. everybody was stretched thin. you were supposed to be sleeping in your quarters, but you sought her out anyway. seeing b’elanna in her element just spurred something in you and you needed to hold her and kiss her. if you tell her this, she’d scoff and roll her eyes embarrassed, claiming there must be something wrong with you. maybe there was. a second kiss might prove it.

TOM

he was so proud of the holodeck program he put together, it was hard not to get swept up in it. tom kept pointing things out, looking pretty smug with himself when you laughed or dazzled at something. he generally took date nights very seriously - and with you, tom felt there was no margin for error. there was something there and he’d be damned if he was going to mess it up. so he didn’t quite get it when you told him you didn’t need some fancy program to like him. 

tom swears he doesn’t even remember going in for the kiss. one second he was standing there, dumbfounded - the next, he was tasting the fruity wine on your lips and wondering if the gravity plating must have gone offline for him to feel this light. tom was grinning the whole rest of the night, which obviously led to a few more kisses just to keep it there.

HARRY

no matter how many shifts he traded around or how much holodeck time he saved up, there never seemed to be an opportunity to spend time with you. great job harry, he manages to land a couple dates with you and can’t even follow through even though he’s very, very interested. and it’s even more humiliating when he gets paired up with you to go crawling around in the jefferies tubes all day. as if that comes close to making up for all the dates he’s been canceling. 

you don’t seem to mind, but maybe you’re just being professional. you’re smiling at him and joking around, only to be nice and spare his feelings. and when harry just starts spouting out apologies after the relay was replaced, that’s when you kiss him. completely out of nowhere. he tastes a bit of salt on your lip from hiking through the tubes. but when you lean back panting, he knows it’s from the kiss. and harry learns that an impromptu kiss in the tubes almost makes up for lost dates.

SEVEN

kissing seemed like such a simple act for seven. she had read and studied the articles the doctor had given her on human romance and relationships, and none seemed quite so straightforward as the first kiss - an imaginary hurdle, in her opinion. but one she recognized must be overcome in order for her relationship with you to deepen. seven recognized the signs of arousal you displayed as she leaned in closer. dilating pupils, heavier breathing, a rush of blood into the capillaries in your face. things she expected to see. things she hadn’t considered she’d feel herself, and so her nerves get the better of her.

the kiss is short. it’s stunted. like a quick dip of your toes in a pool to test the temperature. seven pulls back and she’s sure the implant in her hypothalamus must be malfunctioning due to the fluttering sensation in her chest. but then you smile at her and ask about her motives, seven can’t give a good enough answer anymore.

thinking about what if data were aromantic. even after he gets the emotion chip put in, he still just doesn’t feel romantic love, and doesn’t understand what other people are feeling when they talk about it. and he’s really upset at first because he feels like after everything he’s been through to get here he still isn’t fully human. there’s still a piece missing. he’s tapped into every work of art humans have ever created and romance seems so ubiquitous that he thinks you can’t be human without it

i’m imagining this as like a b or c plot of an episode. maybe he’s been working with a crew member who turns out to be aromantic and they commiserate about how alienating it can be to hear everyone talk about romance all the time. everyone comes together at the end to help him realize that he feels so many different kinds of love, and no human’s experience with emotions is exactly the same and your humanity doesn’t depend on what emotions you do or don’t feel anyway

i think this would be a good episode. i would enjoy it
