so the recent debate- that was entertaining to watch. I have my thoughts on it.
main point tho is I see ppl online saying to vote for the Green Party. Or another 3rd party. Cool- BUT America is fiercely a 2 party system. Yes I hate the Electoral College too but it’s what we got.
See, if enough ppl rally behind a Green Party candidate, it’ll most likely siphon votes away from Kamala. And Kamala, the only one who has a Chance against Trump will have less of a chance.
I get why you want to back a third party. But they’re not going to win unless you get everyone behind them- and you CANNOT get all those Kamala fans to vote Green instead.
Idk if I’m actually going to Change Anyone’s Mind abt this. But this needs to be said!!
Also Kamala was eloquent. They did well to replace Biden with her. Good for her.
I will probably be talking abt politics more with the recent election. Tags to filter out if you don’t want to see that are #star speaks politics, and #politics .

it has been incredibly fun to finally see live action thrawn portrayed by lars mikkelsen, but my god does it sour my mood and dampen my excitement when some users here on tumblr feel the need to comment negatively on what he looks like under my posts. i can see what you write in your reblogs, i can see what you write in the replies, and i can see what you tag them with.
lars is an incredibly talented 59 year old actor portraying an even older character. i sincerely hope i don’t have to see any body-shaming here any more, and when it comes to other complaints regarding thrawn’s appearance, i am asking you, please, to stop leaving negativity especially where your comments will be seen by creators. go make your own post to voice your opinions about what he looks like in live action, or go vent to a friend. it costs absolutely nothing to be considerate of other people on this platform.

re: the post about the hunger games, i agree that the series isn't saying that secular humanism is wrong/destructive (since the capitol doesn't seem to be pursuing humanism at all, so idk how it'd be criticizing humanism specifically), but there are a few mentions of religion being erased/suppressed in the books (like katniss not knowing what angels are when she sees a painting of them, some references to any belief in an afterlife being viewed as "backward"), so some people may be interpreting that as a sign that the loss of religion is part of what made panem Dystopian. personally, i feel like that might be a reference to the (french) cult of reason or various countries that have enforced state atheism instead? or just an example of how the capitol wants to erase history and doesn't want anyone to have loyalty to anything but the state, both of which are pretty common motives for dystopian dictatorships, i feel like? but (especially since the author is catholic) apparently this sometimes gets interpreted in a christian allegory way. i'm not religious at all so i'm not defending that as the right interpretation or anything -- it makes more sense in my mind to say that the absence of religion is just one facet of this fictional society being cut off from a lot of cultural practices. like, this is a version of north america where (seemingly) no one has a name that comes from any non-european language (!!!), but it's also rare for people to know that rome ever existed. that stood out to me way more than the mentions of religion, but if you're analyzing it in a catholic way, idk. sorry for the long-windedness lol
Oh, yeah, if you read it as being a statement on "authoritarian suppression of religious freedom" then that makes a lot more sense. The absence of religion in Star Trek (as I have seen it described - I haven't engaged too much with the Trek shows myself) seems silly and perhaps even a little sinister, as I am not of the school of thought that believes that building a secular society means that individuals would all abandon their religious heritage, even if it became less prominent and more philosophical than dogmatic due to natural shifts in perspective. The Hunger Games being a more realistic portrayal of a society in which religion has been eradicated by state intervention, with said state being a dystopia, yeah, sure, that makes sense.
The silly thing that OP did however is equating the eradication of religion with secular humanism, and speaks to the specific bogeymen that they are imagining in their head. From my perspective, freedom of religious belief is pretty solidly a humanist value! And the "secular" part of "secular humanism" is an approach to building society, not a doctrine that must be evangelized to individuals. But I imagine if you're an "evangelical" (in the sense of, "true belief must be spread") Catholic it must be hard to wrap your head around that, lol.

the thrawn trilogy has thrawn show off his great military mind while setting up the fact that he’s hopeless in politics, and then the ascendency trilogy just has him careening from political disaster to political disaster, with absolutely zero awareness

Hozier (and his incredible opener Allison Russel) gave a beautiful speech about Gaza and a free Palestine and a ceasefire and stressed the upmost importance of hope and of empathy at the show last night. It was literally so beautiful and powerful and important so why the fuck can’t Taylor Swift or Beyoncé or any of the other mega stars be fucked to do the same thing?

Whenever I see the "that sounds like terrorism, Anakin" TCW frame I just I just I remember how the Onderon arc was like the closest thing TCW did to what the Jedi did in the Clone Wars in Legends. Yeah, they aided and trained local resistances against the separatists. It's not just a thing Anakin made up for one arc.

You mean to tell me that the video game www.3body.net from the popular science fiction novel The Three-Body Problem is about a planet that has three (3) suns. This is an incredible revelation that I’m frankly not sure I can believe.

Not the french national news dedicating a whole section to how influential Taylor Swift is and how scared Trump is of her. Who would have thought she could have such an impact on politics that news could write something on it with no material less than 5 months old ? Certainly not a big part of you all

Andor is so much more accurate on how fascism operates and how it criminalizes racialized minorities for profit, as well as how costly resistance is and who tends to die first and is targeted more harshly, and it deserves every bit of praise it gets

Not to get sappy about podcasts but I love listening to them when I’m driving alone late at night because they keep me company. I’m an avid rupalps podrace enjoyer and I was listening to the romance smackdown on my drive home tonight and it made me think of this. Idk it had me giggling and shit. I think what makes podcasts such a beloved medium is how they can seem like you’re part of a conversation. I’ve done some minimal sports podcasting and stuff for journalism I just love it.
