The little prince's name was announced on 28 June as William Arthur Philip Louis. Wills was christened in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, on 4 August.
William studied at Jane Mynors' nursery school and Wetherby School in London before joining Ludgrove. He was subsequently admitted to Eton College, studying geography, biology, and history at the A-level.
The Prince undertook a gap year taking part in British Army training exercises in Belize, working on English dairy farms, and as part of the Raleigh International programme in southern Chile, William worked for ten weeks on local construction projects and taught English.
In 2001, William enrolled at the University of St Andrews, initially to study Art History but then changed his field of study to Geography with the support of the love of his life Catherine Elizabeth Middleton who he met while at school.

What did you do in college????? I start year 12 next week and I want do english at uni what subjects did you do and what uni choices???? If you're okay saying ofc
heyyyy
i did a-levels in english lit, psychology and politics (+ AS spanish) !! and then i'm 2nd year dual honours english lit + politics now :)
uni wise (excluding the one i actually go to) i applied to durham, cambridge, st andrews, nottingham, brighton
some unis aren't too fussed about what other subjects you do !! there were even some (not these ones) that don't need you to do english lit alevel, it's all v individual !! but then others wanted certain english lit + another humanity. all very annoying. all very unnecessary BUT generally if you're doing english lit and meet the grade boundaries that's it :) only fussy unis want more
does this help!? maybe not !! i will say that the personal statement was a big part of it to but if i remember correctly they've changed how that works so idk what it's like now

Princess of Wales Photo Challenge: Day 4
Favourite photo of Catherine at university
Tumblr media
This photo takes me back to my own uni days and just having fun, living with friends and only occasionally studying! I made lifelong friends while at uni and clearly Catherine and William feel the same as Oliver Baker, a friend from St. Andrew’s, was named as a Godparent for Prince George. Also, spot the camera, there’s probably a treasure trove of unseen photos on it.
The photo was taken at St Andrews University in the early 2000s.

On April 4th 1617 John Napier, the mathematician, died.
I hated maths with a vengeance at school, I'm not talking about counting, I can hold my own with that, but real maths. algebra, geometry, topology and worst of all logarithms, which we have Robert Napier to "thank" for, he introduced them in the early 17th century as a means to simplify calculations, aye right!
If John Napier had been born a common man he would maybe have been burnt at the stake, nothing to do with him and his maths nonsense but because he dabbled in the occult at a time when we were routinely setting such people on fire!
James VI was on the throne and his obsession with devilry consigned hundreds of unfortunates to the flames. Unless you were born of a noble family of course. A wee bit background on the Napier's his father was Sir Archibald Napier of Merchiston Castle, and his mother was Janet Bothwell, daughter of the politician and judge Francis Bothwell, Lord of Session, and a sister of Adam Bothwell who became the Bishop of Orkney. Archibald Napier was 16 years old when John Napier was born. John, as was the common practice for members of the nobility at that time, he was privately tutored and did not have formal education until he was 13, when he was sent to St Salvator's College, St Andrews. He dropped out of Uni and toured Europe for a time before returning to Scotland aged 21.
Back to his links with sorcery, several members of John Napier’s family – respected and wealthy participants of Edinburgh society - were commonly known to be wizards or sorcerers. Their necromantic power was feared by nobles as well as peasants from far and wide.
The family wizardry started with Napier's father, Sir Archibald, seventh Laird of Merchiston, who successfully predicted when Mary, then the former Queen of Scotland, would leave Lochleven Castle, where she was imprisoned. The story goes: "Claude Nan, the Queen's secretary, wrote that 'the Laird of Markyston (Sir Archibald), who had the reputation of being a great wizard, made bets with several persons to the amount of five hundred crowns, that by the 5th of May Her Majesty would be out of Lochleven." Mary escaped on 2 May 1568 – and the senior Napier was presumably wealthier for his prediction.
Sir Archibald married Janet Bothwell, sister of Adam, Bishop of Orkney, who the paper said was "a notorious necromancer", so that their son, the future mathematician, inherited "a double inclination towards the magic arts". This might explain some of John's odd behaviour. A necromancer is a wizard or magician by the way, I had to google it!
Tenants who lived on the vast Merchiston estate south-west of Edinburgh thought John to be a bit mysterious at times, Napier would be seen many evenings wearing a long gown, pacing outside his tower chamber, a private work area where he often would pass many long hours alone.
Many people thought that his pet black cockerel was a familiar – a supernatural being which assisted witches and wizards in their magical practice. However, the Napier family held the hereditary role of King’s Poulterer and Napier may have kept the cockerel on a whim but I have read he travelled not only with the bird but also with a black spider in a small box, not normal behaviour.
The Scottish writer and translator Sir Thomas Urquhart, who, told of a demonstration of devastating artillery Napier devised against the threat of invasion by Spain.
"He gave proof upon a large plaine in Scotland to the destruction of a great many herds of cattel and flocks of sheep, whereof some were distant from other half a mile on all sides and some a whole mile,"
A well as being a wizard and mathematician Napier was also a fervent Protestant, much of his writing is vehemently anti-Catholic even by the standards of the time. He was a man of contradictions though, as he is said to have had friends who were Catholic, including Alexander Seton, the Earl of Dunfermline, although the vast majority Catholics back then had to hide their faith.
The last interesting, and worrying, fact I found out about John Napier is that his cause of death according to wiki he died "from the effects of gout" at home in Merchiston tower, now I suffer from gout and it is bloody painful but I didn't know it could kill you!

Imma answer the anon about Kate cause I’m British and I noticed Americans don’t really know much about royal gossip. St. Andrews is a public university, like 99% of our universities are public, but st. Andrews is a posh uni one where a lot of the royals and aristocrats go. Kate’s parents are self-made millionaire so she comes from new money and it’s been rumoured that even though she’s married to William she’s still looked down upon in the aristocrat social circle because she comes from new money with no titles.
It’s been known here that Kate’s mother is known as a social climber and kinda the master mind in her and William meeting, basically Kate had gotten into her dream school, Edinburgh University, however, when it was announced that William would be attending st. Andrews Kate’s mother basically made her take a gap year and attend st. Andrews so she can coincidentally meet William. That’s public knowledge, but it’s been rumoured that she’s groomed Kate for years to be the next queen of England (basically like alicent and Otto from House of the Dragon). If you watch the crown they delve deeper into this!!!
I thought everyone knew that Kate was groomed to be his wife from a young age and was quite literally meticulously placed in certain spaces to make that happen 😭

04-07-2024; travels with epicurus, daniel klein
Tumblr media
"Beauty is equilibrium, and equilibrium is beauty."
popping into bouquiniste books in st. andrews i saw a book sale and obviously had to nab a few, and while i recognised neither the title or author, at the mention of epicurus i decided to grab this one! i’ve absolutely supremely enjoyed klein’s “meditations on old age”, and while it has taken me almost a year to get to reading them, the timing alongside my transition to uni made this experience even more valuable. overall, to really penetrate the academic language and deeper philosophy concepts i think i would deeply benefit at reading it again. the book is not exceptionally lengthy, but it still took me a bit to get through as i often had to sit back and ponder each section as i read.
My Sartrean Ethics Crisis of 2024
this was, admittedly, a very small section of the text, but i’ll talk about it at length here because i found it incredibly impactful (believe it or not, for a book on old age I was not the target audience!).  foreword: i had not yet had the privilege of reading a single word of satre’s before this book. one of klein’s strengths is being able to cover a myriad of concepts and authors/philosophers n such a short time, but obviously doing so limits the depth and span of which he can discuss; tldr, he has sparked a great interest of satre in me, so if you have any recommendations besides his most famous (which i’ve already added to my tbr) or your own takes on his writing, i’m dying for more and would love to hear xP
to continue:
klein writes as such; “In Sartrean ethics we are directed to live authentically— “authenticity” being Satre’s take on the almost universally accepted injunction “To thine own self be true.” A person lives authentically if he operates from the principle that his existence precedes his essence. He is not essentially, say, a waiter or a Democrat or a daytime drinker, these are roles he may choose to play, but not innate qualities that he cannot transcend. For example, an authentic person cannot in good faith say, “I drink two scotches at lunch because that is just the way I am.” He would be treating himself as an object with immutable characteristics, not existing as a subject with the ability to choose who he is and what actions he takes.”
this concept i’m well acquainted with, and i liked to think i understood and internalized. however, what he follows this with has completely shifted my sense of self, and has deepened this concept to the point that i think i can now actually begin to comprehend non-essentialism.
he goes on to say “For me, the most relevant piece here is Sartre's warning against treating oneself as an object. This is a rare bit of moral philosophy that I can actually feel: treating myself as an object makes me feel less alive, less myself. When, say, I find myself in the frame of mind where I am convinced that I am essentially an inconsiderate person and there's nothing to be done about it, I not only feel defeated, I feel that in denying my ability to willfully change I have stopped being truly alive. But at the same time it would be ridiculous not to accept what is beyond my control: I can no more choose to be a young man than I can choose to be tall and blue eyed.
Basically, most of us want to be as responsible for our lives as we can be—it is fundamental to making our lives our own. I choose, therefore I am who I am.”
i could not for the life of me understand the concept of “there is no essential, one true ‘(y/n)’”, i was limiting myself because i didn’t connect that letting our roles invade our essential beings goes beyond my job, or my hobbies, i didn’t connect anything! i feel much freer now, i am essentially nothing, and therefore i am free to change, it is not a betrayal of self. i may have done a horrible job of explaining my thoughts just there, i apologise, it’s far too wrapped up in my emotions to be clear and concise.
another conclusion i reached after only being able to make connections to the midnight gospel: i need to read more philosophy. my catalogue is so small that its an 8 episode mini series made by some guy with a podcast.. i mean its a fantastic series but that cannot be it for me. i’ve had a lovely taster of some of the thoughts of so many of the big ones in this, as well as some of his personal favourites and i feel so inspired now to learn!!
this book is amazing in that i feel like its enforced my positive view on life! i’d really love to go back to this after a lifetime of studying philosophy and aging and seeing how much more deeply I understand the text, i hope i do

“Since the new generation of royals are at the high school/pre-university stage, here’s where I think they would go to based on the vibe they give off (which means this is probably totally wrong): Elisabeth- Yale (Graduate School); Ingrid Alexandra- Brown/Columbia/St. Andrew’s/Edinburgh/Georgetown/UC Berkeley (her father’s alma mater)/Cambridge (she doesn’t really give me Cambridge energy but they have an Education program and based on the job she chose after high school it’s what she’s interested in); Gabriel- Cambridge/Imperial College London/Stanford/Princeton; Leonor- Oxford/Harvard/Stanford/Princeton (idk she doesn’t give me Yale energy, maybe cause I read that she prefers the Sciences so she’ll probably go to a school that’s strong in both Arts and Science); Alexia- NYU/Columbia/Brown/St. Andrew’s/Bocconi or a uni in Argentina or Spain; Christian- he’ll probably stay in Denmark so maybe Aarhus but if he studies abroad St. Andrew’s/Edinburgh; Sofia- Cambridge/Harvard/Stanford/Princeton/Columbia; Isabella- maybe an Australian uni; the rest I still can’t tell cause there’s too little info about them.” - Submitted by Anonymous
