A local thrift hosted a 4th of July 50% off everything sale and I went a bit mad with power
I'm working to make my entire wardrobe Saints of Storm and Sorrow themed slowly but surely and I'll def show some of those book looks off soon
BUUuuuut In a random $1 bundle of whisks and bamboo spoons and ladles I found this gorgeous most definitely handmade 😍 cherry wood spatula that is honestly making my whole day and the whole trip worth it.
I used it to cook this evening and I think I have a new favorite utensil for my non-stick pan

Look at it freshly oiled and you can see where the maker wood burned? Etched? Cherry into the back of the handle
One day I hope my spoon carvings are half this nice. It fits so perfectly in my hand and the flipping edge is so nice and thin

This one is too big for my dinnerware pouch, so I made a smaller one

Spoon!
A couple more things I’ve carved recently. I’m doing a smaller entwined heart spoon currently, and planning on a bunch of hair pins to take to my vendor shows. I’m truly amazed that I took this long to try my hand at carving. I’ve always been fascinated with wood and woodwork, but never thought I was good enough, or careful enough. But I can learn to be careful (and I have been!) And for some reason, the part of my brain that demands perfection from my graphite work (not that I achieve it, but my brain is a very harsh critic of everything) is silent when I’m working with wood. And that in itself is a blessing. Because I have to focus in order to maintain control and care, that voice goes away. And that’s invaluable.
Plus, when I’m running low on spoons, I can now make my own ;)

New spoon this Sunday :)
again made from a piece of dogwood that I acquired. I also tried out the kolrosing technique for the first time to some success, pretty tricky to do just using the tip of my carving knife

Matching spoon?

I truly sacrificed to create this ridiculous mug. biting clay is a bad sensory experience 😔 who would have guessed
I’m tempted not to glaze the bite marks so it looks like it was bitten through the glaze lmao

Carved myself a ladle out of a cedar table leg to go in my reenactment kit.
Tumblr media
One buddy redid cabinets for another buddies camper van and I snatched the table out of the burn pile. I knew it would be an easy wood to hand carve my third spoon out of and I love the color of cedar.
Tumblr media
Added a lindworm design with my persona name in runes. Lindworm head is based on this runestone illustration. It's my first time drawing one. It seemed like a fun idea and it was also very soothing
Tumblr media
Stained the design with blue food coloring to make it a little darker once it's oiled. The cedar will go a rich dark red so this wont be as visible.
Tumblr media
Hit it with olive oil and noticed a 4 way split in the handle, so I'll have to make a repair. I'm thinking dowels. Setting this down until I can pick some up
Welcome to Dr Frankenstein's Arboreal Taxidermy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have reinforced the handle with two birch dowels glued with Titebond III, with more glue inside the splits. Dowels were sawed off, whittled, and sanded after days inside clamps. This section of lindworm was reburned and restained. The blue is off from the rest but I expect it will blend back in after another oiling.
I've also decided that I can have just a little mischief, as a treat.

And since the app wont let me put a video into a reblog, I've edited all of this back into the original post. It is done

I don’t know how this spoon fares in terms of actual utility but I will say it’s bloody amazing. I’ve felt the occasional urge to get into spoon carving and stuff like this is why. I do not need another hobby! Do not tempt me, Sp00ntaneous! Get thee behind me, Sp00ntan!

Weekend project completed!
I bought a new hook knife recently for the much recommended Deepwood Ventures. I decided I wanted to make my own handle for it out of walnut with some grip details and it turned out to be very comfortable. Then a quick and dirty leather sheath to keep it safe.
I will say out of the box the edge was already wicked sharp! Can't wait to use it...
