Actually literally true when you consider Evangelical apocalyptic millenarianism and its offshoots such as Singularitarian techbros. I am so damn tired.
The real problem is that after 2012 when the world didn’t end, everybody and their mother went around trying to nudge it along. Now we have 6 different apocalypses going at the same time

Very neat!
video description: a small clay sculpture of a black bird with a blue beak and blue eyes sits on a green clay nest. finger and thumb lift the bird off the nest, revealing a grey egg underneath. then the bird is set back down on the nest, hiding the egg again
just a little experiment!

The “designer pitbull” comment is, I think, onto something; I’ve thought for a while that (modern ultra-inbred) pugs are, consciously or unconsciously, converging on the same basic shape as a human infant. It’s really something when you look at the skulls. And of course there’s something deeply wrong with purposefully breeding a grotesque quasi-human meat homunculus, but people will continue having babies no matter how hideous they are.
Found an insane baby picture

This is my first time learning about the Hongshen jade creatures, what splendid little guys!
top 5 ancient artistic cultures (not sure about phrasing. yknow like "jomon style" or "anglo saxon art")
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the jade creatures of Hongshen, a late Neolithic culture of northeast China contemporaneous w the latest stages of Sredny Stog and just about all of Yamnaya. attempts to find analogues to these critters in nature have borne little fruit, not least bc the Hongshen appear to had been perfectly capable of pursuing realism in their art – when they wanted to. this article argues the creatures draw inspiration from the shape of human bone and cartillage, like so:

the rest go as follows:

2. figurines of Bronze Age Scandinavia. I just think these look really aesthetically pleasing. look at those curves! idk what to think about attempts to interpret the figurines as depicting historically attested Nordic deities. the most famous artefact to survive from the Nordic Bronze Age, the Trundholm Chariot, seems to depict a myth of only marginal significance to later Norse civilisation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. the erotic pottery of the Moche, predecessors of the Chimor, who flourished on the coast of northwestern Peru prior to their conquest by the Inca. this post goes a little into the various theories concerning the purpose of the so-called "porn pottery" – I like Larco Hoyle's idea that the pottery (none of which appears to depict penis-in-vagina intercourse) was used by the Moche in order to teach and show methods of natural birth control. but ofc there's a direct analogue in depictions of sodomy on Greek pottery, which doesn't really seem to had served a didactic purpose

4. the Thinkers of Hamangia - not much of a "style" given that it's only these two figurines, I suppose, but these two are my favourite sculptures to come out of Neolithic Europe by far. could write a whole post about them, honestly; definitely among my favourite pieces of prehistoric art in general. afaict, the figurines are nowadays mostly interpreted as a prehistoric equivalent to Gauguin's Where Do We Come From? - I personally prefer to think of them as analogous to his Grape Harvest at Arles

5. cosmetic palettes of late Neolithic Egypt, or what is properly known as the Naqada III phase of Protodynastic Egypt. I just find them to be really pretty – and I kind of love the idea of decorating what is basically a make-up container with depictions of your country's military conquests. the most famous of these palettes is the Narmer Palette; my personal favourite is the Bull Palette, shown on the left. I'd totally use them to mix my kohl

I love this worldbuilding. Even a very silly premise can become a window into societal Consequences.
hey everyone. so i've been playing the horse gacha game umamusume pretty derby. two things about umamusume are that at the end of every race the horses who won the race perform an idol concert, and that every horse girl has a ridiculous unaerodynamic vtuber outfit. and initially to me these were both things that are obviously silly but which you have to suspend your disbelief for because you can acknowledge the doylean reasons for having them. but actually they make perfect sense in universe.
umamusume textually have strength and speed that vastly exceeds that of any normal human. historically it would obviously have been massively impractical to apply the same gender role constraints to them that were applied to normal human women in many cultures. you need your horse women to both be allowed to go to war and want to go to war, and while obviously you do also want them to reproduce you don't want them to then spend years raising the kids, something normal humans can do, when they could be using their time on things normal humans can't do.
so i feel like in a lot of cultures there would be similar kinds of social developments to machismo but for horse women (horschismo) to incentivise their participation in physically dangerous activities, they would overall be subject to different social pressures and expectations from normal human women, and probably to varying extents they would often be considered a separate gender from human women.
however, like horses in real life, since the industrial revolution umamusume in industrialised countries have become an entertainment commodity when previously they would have been vital to labour and warfare. and being cute girls makes them more consumable as entertainment.
so obviously the idol shit is a deliberate 20th century invention to emphasise the girlness of horse girls, which both makes them more marketable and folds horse woman gender roles into the broader concept of "women" for everyone's social comfort. probably there is a lot of in universe scholarship on this and different umamusume have and have had a lot of different opinions about it. like i expect in the early 20th century there would have been plenty of umamusume who were totally hype to be able to be "normal girls"
now i'm being tongue in cheek here obviously. but also this IS the logical implication of the information presented in the franchise. if cygames didn't want me to come to these conclusions then they shouldn't keep showing us ancient egyptian depictions of bronze age horse girls and shit like that. hope you're having a wonderful day 🏇
