Happy Spongecake Day! 🍰
And happy 6th anniversary to this comic of Logi and Loki's annual eating rematch~
Logi is still undefeated.
(In the Tale of Útgarða-Loki, Loki is challenged to and defeated in an eating contest by the giant Logi, who turns out to be the embodiment of wildfire. Spongecake Day is a Lokean holiday that falls on September 4-5 that commemorates a time on Tumblr when someone got elitist backlash after posting a picture of a spongecake they offered to Loki ; and the Lokean community responded to the discourse with retorts, spongecake spam and a new tradition.)

Two days of Cake with Loki - what's not to like?
wait! What's the story about the spongecake? :o
Answering a couple asks at once:
Once upon a time, two years ago, late on the 4th of September, a Lokean posted an image of an offering to Loki of strawberry spongecake.
And someone took it upon themselves to exclaim how this was SUCH THE WRONG OFFERING TO MAKE HUFF PUFF IT WASN’T HANDMADE HOW IS DESSERT RIGHT HOW DARE U.
These were the days when there was often DRAMA IN THE LOKEAN TAG and this, as you can imagine, inspired some. But it escaped the Lokean tag and swept across broad swathes of witchypaganetc. Tumblr, and the vast majority of people’s responses were variations on: “What’s wrong with cake?” and “Uh, it’s Loki - Loki appreciates sweets” and “What, now we have to own COWS so we can WHIP OUR OWN CREAM???” and “Not everyone can AFFORD FANCY OFFERINGS” and were generally supportive and awesome. (There was also a confession of someone having offered Thor, the actual deity, pop tarts.) There was thoughtful analysis of historically-attested offerings that have things in common with the offered spongecake. (x)
The, uh, discussion shall we say, lasted for hours and hours, stretching across international timezones, hence the reason some people insist the holiday is September 4th and others mark it on the 5th (x). I say there is nothing at all wrong with two-day holidays.
Eventually the discussion devolved - or perhaps evolved - into people posting nothing but images of cakes.
And thus, in an event vaguely reminiscent of some mythic events, a controversial and upsetting event set off by, or rather on behalf of, Loki, ended up bringing diverse peoples together in a common cause: CAKE IS SRS BSNS. And a good time was had by all. Or at least most; the cake-hater probably didn’t have such a good time.
(Later that month was the controversy over underpants with Mjolnir printed on them, but that is a tale for a different time.)
Here’s one part of The Post and Ensuing Thread that Started it All.
Here’s some art and poetry commemorating the event.
I tagged a bunch of things with a ridiculous tag I can never remember when I want to find the damn posts, so HERE. HAVE MORE HISTORY. Or hit my archive for September 2012, there’s more in there.

Hello everyone! Sorry for not posting original content in a while. I had the time to read and study, but I lacked motivation. (i have at least 10+ paperbacks and 30+ ebooks to read, and yet I still didn't finish the book I started 2 weeks ago 😅😭)
A little update: My foot is alright, I just strained my ligaments. I couldn't walk on my left foot for 2 weeks. After going to a checkup a couple of days earlier I started walking again. It's painful, but I'm glad that I am finally able to walk again.
Fun fact: All the photos were made today. (I usually add some old photos to the mix) Mom made a spongecake. For a spongecake that doesn't have any animal products in it or oil, it tastes surprisingly well.
What I did today:
Read some articles on "der Spiegel"
Revised nearly all of the material I studied so far (because I didn't study in a while)
Listened to the German news on "Die Nachrichten" by Deutschlandfunk on Spotify

Can I ask you your opinion about Asatru Alliance? I live in Italy and I'm starting to see some pagan organizations using Asatru Alliance as a trusted reference for Heathenry. I have my doubts, but it could be that something gets lost in translation.
And by the way, apparently Asatru Alliance reconstructed a day to celebrate Loki and Sigyn, the 31 of july? 🤔
The general answer I have here is to follow this rule of thumb:
Any American org that has the word "Asatru" in it is probably plagued by some bullshit, even if it's not the racist kind.
These orgs operate out of structures they inherited from their Folkish origins. Even if they are not Folkish now, most were established during a time when Folkish Heathenry was the only kind of Heathenry that existed in America.
One notable structure they inhereted was "whoever is in charge controls the narrative of Heathenry for everyone else." So if you want that narrative to change, you need to elect different leaders.
Even the Asatru Alliance admits it determines who it accepts based on whether the applicant is a "good fit" or not, basically admitting there's a norm of narrative-control in their ranks.
Having an authority control the narrative—even when it's a narrative you like—is antithetical to how Heathenry operates, where practices and customs emerge organically from people and culture, not from doctrines or religious authorities determining what's what. (We have a recent example of something new emerging in Heathenry, actually, in the form of Spongecake Day as a holiday for Loki.)
The Asatru Alliance is also basically the posterchild of what I call "Viking Christianity." They take the Norse gods and slot them into a Christian structure, treat the Eddas like holy books, treat the Hávamál like scripture, etc.
I don't know much about the holiday they reconstructed, but I do know many reconstructionists have a bad habit of treating the past as a doctrine to follow. Reconstructing the past can tell us a lot about how Heathenry was practiced in a given time and place, but using it as doctrine is, hilariously enough, very ahistorical—the Norse people didn't base their religion around what they discovered about their Bronze-Age forebearers, so why would we do the same?
Even if the Asatru Alliance didn't have the narrative-control aspect baked into their system, the org doesn't really strike me as one that understands Heathenry's religious architecture. After all, knowledge of Norse Studies is not the same as knowledge of theology.
So no, I wouldn't really trust them as a resource on Heathenry.

MDZS cooks, rated by Jiang Yanli, the Queen of soup.
Wei Wuxian: abomination unto the kitchen gods! Eating his food is just the beginning of your suffering because rest assured, it'll hurt more coming out.
Lan Wangji: Actually decent at making simple dishes. Stickler for recipes.
Jin ZiXuan: Messes up the spice drawer and substitutes sugar for salt. Get him out of her kitchen!
Jiang Cheng: Elaborate, fancy recipes. Leaves a mountain of dishes in the sink.
Nie MingJue: Stress baker. Makes excuisite croissants, thanks to his upper arm strength.
Nie HuaiSang: Self-declared taste-tester. Will finish off an entire pot just tasting. Persona non grata in the kitchen.
Lan Xichen: Partner in Sunday baking class. Tends to slightly overmix cake batters and make dense spongecakes.
Jin GuangYao: Doesn't cook, but has a palate that should be preserved for posterity. Can tell all the ingredients in a recipe from one taste and recommend whatever is needed to fix it.
Jin Ling: Ruined the microwave trying to cook an egg.
Lan SiZhui: Takes after both his parents. As in, can cook simple recipes but tends to overspice.
Lan JingYi: Would rather live on takeouts and cup noodles.
Ouyang Zizhen: That child will probably get kidnapped one day, lured by a piece of cake. Can't boil water.
Jiang Fengmian: Actually knows his way around the kitchen.
Yu ZiYuan: Can toast bread and slather jam on it. That's pretty much it.
Lan Qiren: Excuse me? Why cook yourself when you can pay someone else to do it?
Wei ChangZe: King of barbecue. Has a secret spice mix that he hides from everyone.
Cangse Sanren: Can't believe she's saying this, but actually agrees with goatee Lan.
Wen Qing: Coffee connoisseur. Hasn't bothered to explore the rest of the food pyramid.
Wen Ning: Master Chef material.

Quick Loki sketch~ Happy Goldfish Day! 🎣
Did you know that the reason goldfish crackers are shaped that way because Thor pinches their tails when pulling them out of the cheese river? /j
Here's the link to the post. TL;DR it's like Spongecake Day, just with goldfish crackers.

Late August and early September in the Northern Hemisphere are packed with pagan harvest celebrations dating back several millennia: “First Fruits” festivals in valleys full of orchards; “Hops Hooding” shows where girls from brewing regions wear bowers of vines; competitions where ribbons are awarded for the biggest or least-blemished fruit; processions with hobby horses and elaborately-costumed dancers; rituals involving the last sheaf of grain and the alcohol made from the first of the harvest. In the early second millennium CE, among the city-dwelling early New Heathens of a pre-sea-swell late-capitalist society disconnected from the ancient agricultural calendar, a new harvest ritual spontaneously emerged that echoed prior lavish offerings of fruits and grains to the Elder Gods. It was called “Spongecake Day”. While its origins were lost with the drowning of the great digital libraries, in this essay, I shall discuss the
