fanfiction

i’d like to talk about fanfiction real quick because there are some issues really frequently that can make or break a story. and they’re avoidable!! and it makes me so sad when i’m trying to read a good fanfic and there’s so many errors that i have to stop.

NAMES

so this is one i see surprisingly often… please make sure you know how to spell a character’s name when writing a fanfiction. it’s usually something small like damian vs. damien or lucas vs. lukas but to me it’s so distracting and disappointing when there’s a beautifully written story with a character’s name spelled wrong.

SPELLING

this is a big one, too. when writing, some people don’t always have a spell check or an editor built in to their platform. if that’s you, please triple check your work! and here are a few frequent ones i see-

-shook vs. shock

i shook his hand

i was in shock that she did such a horrible thing

-peaked vs. piqued

-he looked like he peaked in high school

-they piqued my interest

blonde vs blond

-she had blonde hair

-he had blond hair

blonde is a gendered word. i’m not actually sure how it’s used with nonbinary people, let me know!

their, there, and they’re

-it was theirs

-she’s over there

-they were scared, and now they’re not

remember that they’re is a contraction of they are!

quite vs. quiet

she tried to be quiet, not making any noise.

they were quite bored with this whole event.

BILINGUAL CHARACTERS

please, please, please do some research if you write a character who speaks another language. even if it’s reading other fanfictions to figure out how your character’s language fits in with the language you’re writing with.

-having a character to say that it’s ’hard to switch back’ is… unrealistic at best. i wouldn’t recommend using it.

-please gender the words correctly! in most of the romance languages, words are gendered. make sure to add that in!

REPETITION

unless you’re going for a gimmick, i’d be careful with repetition. having a character say something more than once, especially in the same sentence, can be annoying and makes the dialogue sound forced.

especially the word antics…. i literally had to put a fic down because ‘antics’ was in every other sentence.

ex: “Lily sighed, annoyed. She was so annoyed!”

(yes this is a real actual example with the character name changed. don’t let this be you.)

FORMATTING

i think this can be overlooked a lot but format is important!!!

-paragraph breaks!! seeing a huge chunk of words with absolutely no breaks is overwhelming. add some space!

-“the punctuation goes inside the quotations.” he said

-i know i’m being a bit of a hypocrite, but capitalization! names, beginning of sentences, and places!! if you don’t capitalize, at least be consistent with it!

“This is how fanfiction, or really any writing, should be formatted.” Eli said with a smile

“And every new sentence should be a paragraph break,” interjected Alex, “Unless you’re going for a certain style. In which case, you do you.”

Eli sighed. “That’s true, Alex. What OP didn’t know was that tumblr has a formatting issue, so that when she posts this, the paragraph breaks won’t show! She hopes she fixed it. But it might not work!”

“We can always imagine the bullet points as paragraph breaks.”

-friendly neighborhood reminder that paragraph breaks happen when introducing a new idea as well!

-bolds and italics are important.

“I told him not to go,” acceptable, a bit dry.

“I told him not to go,” exquisite, flavorful.

and as always. please make sure they’re talking like people. not disney sitcom characters.

PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE TENSE

you would not believe how much i see this messed up. and it’s easy to get wrong. remember, you can always look something up if you aren’t sure. but stay consistent with your tenses!

past tense

She walked up to the drab, grey building, trembling. As she pulled the door open, a bell rang, signaling her arrival.

this one’s probably the most used. notice that it’s almost like we’re retelling the story, after it’s already happened (hence past tense)

present tense

She walks up to the drab, grey building, trembling. She pulls the door open, and a bell rings to signal her arrival.

we have to change quite a few words for the same sentence to make sense in present tense.

future tense

She’ll walk up to the drab, grey building, trembling. She’ll pull the door open, and a bell will ring to signal her arrival.

i honestly don’t think i’ve ever seen future tense used in a novel unless it’s used in dialogue. but it’s almost as if you’re speaking hypothetically about an event.

but please make sure you’re consistent with these! don’t use one and then switch to another!!

now of COURSE writing is a form of creation, and you can ultimately do whatever you want! if you want to write something, write it. this is just a little guide for some of the mistakes i see most often!

but all in all just double check your writing, always!!! there are so many good works out there that could be great.,… if you don’t have someone to beta read you can always send it to me or put it in word <3

blue exorcist - Rin and Yukio, Rin sorta not really getting their adoptive father killed while having a more demonic side to him, which makes practically everyone nut trust him or afraid of him… fun. Yukio is a high achieving childhood prodegy and has also been known to be able to see demons since his childhood, which is why he started exorcism at like seven… fun

greek mythology - castor and pollux, pollux being the son of zeus and castor the son of Tyndareus, both mothered by Leda, were princes of sparda. Both saved Helen and were on the argonauts and have been told to have liked a multitude of different things.. blah blah, castor ends up dying and pollux being a demigod decides to say f u to immortality in order to stay with his brother, which created gemini

greek mythology- apollo and artemis, these two have been mainly shown to focus on the polar opposite part of being siblings, apollo being the sun and a literal man whore, while his older twin sister is the moon and has been known for choosing an oath to throw away marriage and that shit

A fun and quick little cooking tip I've picked up for if you want to add a new seasoning to a sauce, dressing, gravy, or even spice blend, but you aren't sure what to add or how it'll change the taste:

I'll use a sauce as an example. Make a batch of the sauce as you normally would. Pour out a small amount of sauce into a bowl or onto a plate (or just scoop some out with a clean spoon). Season the portion using a fraction of the amount you'd use in the full recipe. Give it a stir and taste.

If it sucks, congrats! You've avoided ruining a whole batch of sauce, and you can try something else instead. And if it's great, scale up the amount and season the whole pot of sauce! Hooray!

It's fun to do this with several spices side by side. Spoon out little portions and see how more salt would affect it. What about pepper? What if it was spicier? What's the difference between red chili flakes and chipotle chili powder? How do different herbs change the taste? And so on and so on.

Doing this kind of taste testing helped me learn how similar spices change a dish in different ways. It also means I can pick out particular flavors within a dish with relative accuracy, allowing me to duplicate recipes or figure out how to improve them by knowing what's missing (or what has too much) by taste.

(And the same principles apply to testing ingredients in spells! Learning to cook by trial and error forms a good portion of my witchcraft foundations. (: )

I personally love that kinda stuff esp cause I think it adds to the replayability of the game! The coding for that kinda stuff tho takes forever to do lmao!

Wilder Powers

Now Wilders took me forever to figure out but I think I managed to get it. Just to let you know, the way Wilder powers work is that they can either use their power on themself or another.

So first off all Wilders have Wilder Enhanced Vision which allows them to see the Sin and Virtue of their type. Also, they have two Virtue powers which have an opposite to them, Sin powers.

First up is the power to heal another or take power from another to heal themself. The second power is to power another up or take the power of another to power themselves up. The only problem with these powers is that the magic to heal or power up comes from a power source, whether it’s the Wilder doing the spell or the one they’re taking from.

Now let’s walk about individual powers; each Sin/Virtue has their own little power that they carry with them to the afterlife. If they become Sinners they can only use it on themselves and if they become Saints they can only use it on others.

Pride & Humility Wilders have the Precognition ability which allows them to see bites of the future however this can also occur randomly or happen suddenly through touch. This ability can’t be given, the way it works is that it allows its user to see a future event involving another person either when they touch the Wilder or are just near them.

Wrath & Patience Wilders have Enhanced Speed and this has to be used like a spell.

Greed & Charity Wilders have Object Conjure however this ability has a little trick to it. For one Greed Wilders can only conjure something they have seen in person and it has to be an object or a solid, they can’t conjure liquid or gas. Also conjured paper is very different from real paper if you get where I’m going with this.

Envy & Kindness Wilders have the Mimicry ability. Mimicry is described as the ability to copy/replicate the forms of various beings/objects (e.g., organic, inorganic, physiological, meta, supernatural, etc.) as well as the ability to gain the powers/abilities, properties, and affinities of the entities/objects/matter whose form or appearance they have taken. First off in this world the Mimicry ability only goes as far as copying the form of a being or object, that’s the normal version of it. Now some Envy Wilders can get to a point where they can copy others powers but that is very rare and very hard to get to. Also when using the Mimicry ability the user's eyes are their normal color and will glow dark blue when another Wilder’s ability is used on them. When using it on another they can just turn them into what they want to copy and like when the Wilder does it to themselves their eyes stay the same color, however, when another Wilder ability is used on them they change back to normal.

Lust & Chastity Wilders can use Mind Control through pheromones. The way this works is that when they use it they release the pheromones themselves. They have to cast a spell on another person who will then start releasing the pheromones. Some people have become immune to it but it only works when the non-Wilder uses it. Also, there is a chemical that when sprayed on a person under the effects of the ability the chemical will chase it out of them, returning them to normal.

Gluttony & Temperance Wilders have Liquid Telekinesis (called this but not what it sounds like). These Wilders can create a lava-lamp-like liquid (think of Queen B’s hair), shape it, and create food from it however it will be bland. To make it more flavorful the user, when they shape it before they turn it into the real thing, they will add spices or any kind of thing to give it flavor to the liquid and then make it solid. It does take a lot of practice and trial and error to get it to work though.

Sloth & Diligence Wilders have the ability Dream Manipulation however there are two different ways it’s used. The first one and the more common and easy one is Enhanced Stamina while the second one (and the more high level one) is actually Dream Manipulation. The one thing I want to make clear is that I’m not talking about the element Oneirokinesis when I say Dream Manipulation no, I’m talking about going into a dream and altering it.

The fact he is looking around and side to side like he has something to hide doesn't help his case, it's not that he is trying to hide something: he just wants to have nobody notice so yall can spend time alone- not in that way he wouldn't think of such things! 

You open the door surprised to see the vice dorm leader of heartslabyul, “Trey? What are you doing here, it's past 9pm doesn't the rules say you can't be out?” You are confused, why is he out this late??? “Its okay riddle gave me permission” (He didn't)

You welcomed him inside and he gladly walked in. “What's in the basket?” You always are a bit on your toes, especially after Ace pranked you with mint toothpaste as frosting. 

“I was wondering if you would like to bake with me” he asked, already putting down the ingredients –therefore you knew he wasn't taking no for an answer. He gave you a smile after he sat everything on the counter, “So, what do you say?” Trey beckons, his smile is still present, a smile that shined like the sun and so sweet that it could give you cavities..

You agree and bow both of yall are acting like Gordon Ramsay.

Everytime you would put the wrong ingredient, he would always comment on it while you say yes chef and you have the honor of trying to speak in his British accent. 

Yall act silly for a little while before finally agreeing on making a tart.

While stirring trey would help you so there won't be any chunks, while checking the oven he would nag at you. While whisking in the egg whites and beating mascarpone and cream cheese until smooth. Trey stands behind you and guides your hands making sure you don't beat them too hard or whisk it too much.

“speed up” Trey nonchalantly said, you on the other hand felt a bit creeped out by the close contact. His mouth is by your ear and his breath fans your cheek. While you mix he adds in lemon, powdered sugar and strawberry flavoring. 

Filling the crust with the mixture he spreads and smooths it, for a moment he looked like a professional baker you see on tv. You start cutting the strawberries making sure each slice is perfect.

Trey would often glance over to you.

Once yall properly placed the strawberries and placed it in the fridge yall cleaned up the mess, when it was done yall sat at the table and cute out two even pieces. “I'll save some for grim” 

There is was, your kindness for everyone else deciding choices for you. He hummed back.

You sat down at the but was interrupted by a buzz from your phone.

Everytime yall try to do something you always have something pop up, but not this time. Trey takes the filling if the tart and spreads it on your cheek.

"What…? What the fuck is on my cheek." You know that meme where the girl puts a flower on the cat's bead and the cat pulls its head back? Yeah thats you. 

You're so confused, what is it!??!?! Then you see a smirking trey, oh…? That's how it is?

Suddenly you grab a fistful of the strawberries and filling, smearing it on treys face.

It soon became a battle, filling flew in the air and strawberries hti someone's nose. But nonetheless it was fun, not having to think about all the tasks you will have to do later, knowing that trey will help you clean this mess. It all felt comforting.

The air bubbles with laughter and filling. Even the tart that was saved for grim was sacrificed for the sake of the battle.

His plan worked, but it worked better than he expected.

Now in his sights is a smiling prefect, a sight so glorious he felt as if he had been blessed by some goddess. Your laughter bubbled up like soda pop and echoed in the air, the warmth of your body filled the room.

Oh how he loved it when you would let go of every worry you had for the sake of having fun. For a moment he even thought of a future with you like this.

Queen is very warm at all times,very huggable She can cook and is very good at it She loves mistranslated shirts, and has set out to get as many as she can I do maybe fully believe that she would half ironically half unironically call Rouxls “babygirl” Queen has. Good posture Yeah she does his makeup She gives Rou, forehead kisses, or just in general a lot of positive affection She makes the best food, ever She paints Rous nails sometimes She very much constantly compliments Rou My biggest flex is unintentionally predicting AI art /hj; i think that Que cant properly create art and can only really copy or take parts of other peoples art and mash it into one, she can also perfectly replicate art. She draws like a printer too She very easily gets tricked by optical illusions I feel like she would say “holy fuck, holy fucking fuck, that body of yours is absurd” to Rou at least twice

She is cheesy in the best way possible LOL - Always remembering anniversarys, buying flowers, giving compliments... So she always makes sure Clemmie feels loved

Actually listening to her rants! 😭 Instead of just getting bored, Ags always listens when her girlfriend talks about jer hyperfixations - Clemmie isn't used to people wanting to hear her out so she was so suprised the first time she started excitedly talking about something - and realising Ags actually listened and even asked questions 🥹

Ags making her coffee and bringing it to bed when she has headaches. She always makes it exactly the way Clemmie likes it and it just makes her feel so cared for and loved 😭

Nacho and Varganardi:

Remembering the smallest details about Laura (my other s/i!) For example: Her favorite ice cream flavor, favorite episodes of her fav shows, what shade of lipstick she wears, etc... He adds it all to a mental list. And it just makes her so happy when he remembers such things :')

The time he read some of her favorite books just so he could discuss it with her and impress her - didn't work as he wanted it to but hey, at least she appreciated the gesture and found it cute! 😭(I feel like Nacho is the type of guy that gets really bored and almost falls asleep when reading LOL)

The time she walked in on Nacho talking in a silly voice to her cat 🥹 He just sat there like: "Who's a cute cat?? You are! Yes you are! You are!" And didn't notice Laura at first AVHDHDHHS

I’m not a chronic modder I’m just doing a survival world with the Vampirism mod to spice things up.

And minimap mods makes it much easier to navigate. And Optifine makes the game run better. And whatever the current Not Enough Items clone is is really useful for remembering recipes-

…and you know adding magic and spells of Ars Nouveau would add to the flavor of things. And you know, the Create mod adds a really interesting steampunk vibe that would make automation so much cooler and easier. And you know, I saw this new mod the other day Farmer’s Delight that adds a lot of really cool and a aesthetic food that fits really feel of the vampire theme. And you know there tools of Tinker’s Construct are really useful and add a lot of customizability to gear. And you know the smelteries from Tinker’s Construct run much better with Blazing Pyrotheum so might as well add thermal expansion. And you know if I’m adding Create I might as well add Immersive Engineering as well, it fits the theme. And you know Botania-

A Bit More Info on the Update Mechanics

The decision on which club you join is one of the first questions in Chapter 1, so players will have to restart from pretty early on. However the fencing club flavor text will continue to run throughout the rest of the game (including in the Camelot dream sequence with the Courtyard branch for the Lucid Dreamer MC).

Otherwise this current update does not progress the game further into Chapter 2.

We lost power to part of the house (thankfully not including my computer), and while I'm usually the one who deals with the circuit breakers, since I'm currently sick I asked my mother to do it this one time. She turned the power off to the entire house. 🥲 The uninterruptible power source did nothing and now my computer and the microwave are bugging out. I'm just going to lie down now.

Day 8: Trial

Embodyment of Justice 4WWW Creature - Spirit Advisor 6/6

Vigilance Council’s Dillema — When Embodyment of Justice attacks, each player chooses guilty of innocent. For each guilty vote, tap a creature defending player controls. For each innocent vote, you draw a card and gain 1 life.

I myself have my Big Creatures™ proclivities, and have a dear friend that has Reanimation™ proclivities, and we often converge on big, white or black creatures (rarely both, tho). This was very much informed by that.

Day 9: Error

Grave Mistake U Instant

Counter target spell or ability that targets a card in a graveyard, or that is cast or activated from a graveyard.

Two things:

How the fuck is this card name not taken? Three visits to Innistrad, At least 2 sets each, and you mean to tell me that this NEVER came up? How? Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow wasn't that far from Thunder Junction, which has Holy Cow as a card. Grave Mistake should have come so, so much earlier than that.

When I made the mechanics for the card I could see the art I wanted. A blue cloud-covered sky in the backround as a zombie is mid-rising from the grave looking at a comical scene with a confused expression on its rotting face. I could not find ANYTHING in that ball park. I struggled to find a screenshot of Emily looking mildly confused. Again, I ask: How the fuck is this not a thing?

Day 10: Cat

Lion Charm 1G/W Instant

Choose one — Create a 2/1 green cat creature token. Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Gain 2 life for each creature you control

I have had this idea of Animal Charms for a long while. The idea is that all of the charms have the first option as a token, the second option as some kind of interaction with your opponent, and the third is something for yourself. Originally, Cat was the Green card of this batch, though its design was so White as well I shifted it to multicolor, which was as yet undecided. I think it works well.

Day 11: Mouse

Rat Charm 1B Instant

Choose one — Create a 1/1 black rat creature token with deathtouch. Target opponent discards a card at random. Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

I know. I know it said mouse. And I know we just had Bloomburrow that have created a mechanical identity to Mice. I don't care. Rats are much more well established, AND I wanted black to have a card this batch. So yeah, a pretty strong Charm, imo.

Day 12: Cut

Blade of Grass 1G Atrifact - Equipment

Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and gains “T, tap an untapped creature you control: Add a mana of any color” Equip 1

I'm very conflicted about the costs of all of this. I like the flavoring. I do think that the effects like a boost and a mana ability is exactly what I wanted. But the cost of the equipment and the equip itself feels off. I like the idea of tapping another creature, as a singular blade of grass is less effective than a forest, but all of that feels like you'd never use the mana ability outside of limited board stalls, which is not what I want here. Thoughts?

Day 13: Thrust

Improvised Thrusters 2 Artifact - Equipment

Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has flying and haste. Whenever a vehicle becomes a creature, you may tap an artificer or pilot creature you control. If you do, equip Improvised Thrusters to that vehicle.

I love shit that doesn't work as it should. An enchantment that taps for its effect. Creatures that don't actually have creature types. Or here, an Equipment that doesn't have an Equip or Reconfigure ability. Also, I did not think that I would have two "Artificers matter" cards not even halfway through Moxtober. Huh.

Day 14: Quick

Strike Fast R Instant

Target creature gets +1/+1 and gains haste until end of turn.

Strike True R Instant

Target creature gets +2/+0 and gains first strike until end of turn.

Honestly, "Quick" had to be red. I honestly was just browsing art pieces for inspiration, and with this gorgeous landscape-oriented piece, I felt that a Split card was due. This was done quickly, too, as the prompt would imply, honestly.
