oh god okay...i feel like i'm going to regret this but mainly i've just been thinking about how unlikely it is that svetlana doesn't have some sort of history with drugs. i don't necessarily mean a full blown addiction, but i can't imagine her never having turned to substances in order to cope.

when we meet her she's been 'in the business' for nine years, so she's pretty resigned to it, but that wouldn't have been the case for some time. and then there's also the fact that traffickers frequently use substances to manipulate and coerce their victims, sometimes even going as far as deliberately getting them hooked in order to make them easier to control.

when kev asked mickey how sasha kept the girls in line, mickey said "guns and beatings, mostly". mostly. meaning there were other ways that we didn't see or hear about.

i don't know. i've been spending a lot of time lately thinking about svetlana in her early teens and wondering what she might have been like. she tells v that before yevgeny she was "selfish", but i wonder if that selfishness was just her lashing out because of her circumstances or putting herself first because if she didn't then nobody else would.

i can see her having gone through a rebellious phase before she became more compliant. i think the submissiveness she exhibited in s3 was learned over time. it's also possible she was headed down a bad path at some point, which contributed to her father paying smugglers to get her out of the country.

which reminds me, i've been meaning to make a post about yvon and my theories about svetlana's marriage to him. in addition to being old enough to pass as svetlana's father, marrying her when she was underage, and being an abusive piece of shit, he was also a seasoned criminal covered in prison tattoos. i can only imagine the kind of shit he got himself and, by extension, svetlana involved in. the way that svetlana defaulted to being acquiescent around him speaks volumes.
