The Hazbin Hotel fandom’s issue with accepting aromanticism and asexuality

Now that it is officially Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, I want to talk about this!

I find that, as an aroace myself, I am constantly grasping at good representation and coming up empty— it usually ends up in one of two ways.

One: the character is portrayed as emotionless, cold, and robotic in nature. It’s the question aromantic and/or asexual people are often asked: “Are you heartless?” The answer is no, of course, but general media makes it out to be the opposite.

Or two: Their lack of attraction is seen as something to “fix” because they “haven’t found the right one yet”, and they end up with a partner as a “happy ending”.

It frustrates me greatly because of how little people actually see aromanticism or asexuality as a true part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

So when I watched Hazbin Hotel, and I found out about Alastor being aroace, I was over the moon. I was on cloud nine. I also saw how his voice actor has looked up the term as an attempt to learn about aroaces, which makes me OVERJOYED?? Amir is truly a blessing, and I love that he’s proud to embody a character that’s part of our community. It’s so beautiful to finally have a proper character, a fan favorite at that, who just so happens to be aroace— and that’s another thing I love about this.

It’s never explicitly stated in the show (though it is stated in interviews), but it’s rather clear when you’re watching, isn’t it? Alastor’s aversion to any sort of sexual advancement, coupled with Rosie’s blatant “I know you’re an ace in the hole” comment sort of spell out his asexuality pretty clearly, as well as what side of the spectrum he falls upon. In addition, his Valentine’s day card was strictly platonic, which caters to his aromantic side. It feels so validating to finally be represented, to finally have a character in media who shares the same lack of interest in romance and sex as I do.

When I entered the fandom to look for more content, I kind of expected to see the same respect for Alastor’s orientation there too. But that… wasn’t the case? I am fully aware that aromanticism and asexuality are both spectrums— of course, aromantic and/or asexual people can enter those kinds of relationships. I’m not denying that and they belong in the community as much as anyone else on the spectrum.

But, the more I see the same line again and again and again, the more it feels like an excuse to just ship what you want.

Usually I don’t mind shipping? I’m often a firm believer in people shipping what they like as long as it’s harmless and they don’t go crazy over it. I also know for a fact that Viv doesn’t have a problem with people shipping her characters. They are fictional, after all.

But in this case, people are ignoring the very thing that makes Alastor a part of the aroace community! People are ignoring his lack of romantic or sexual attraction!

Is this not the same as changing a gay character’s orientation to suit a straight ship? If not, how so? I’m told that we are a part of this community, so why aren’t we being treated like it? Why is it so hard to accept the people on the end of the spectrum who aren’t interested?

Something I’ve been noticing throughout my life is that society has not exactly progressed very much on the idea of accepting asexual or aromantic identities. Maybe we have, a little, since the old days— but hell, people in “the old days”, which in truth wasn’t very long ago, believed that asexuality was a medical condition to be “fixed” by taking the right medication or having sex. That’s a pretty low bar to clear. And on the romance side, you’re seen as a “late bloomer” or “boring” if you don’t express interest. These days, being friends with someone is treated like a gateway to them possibly becoming a lover. Not getting married, not going on dates, not wanting a partner— it’s all treated like a crime when it’s not.

Maybe I’m selfish, or sensitive, or I’m butthurt over nothing, or I’m making it all about me. Maybe I’m gatekeeping or whatever the term is. But please, please, please, I just want an aroace character like me who simply is not interested in sex or romance.

And I want fandom to respect that. I admire the creations that fans make— the art, the animatics, the writing and the character analysis. And I want people to keep creating because creation is indeed a beautiful thing.

But I really would like people to treat aroace identities like they’re important. Like it’s more than just a spectrum to get wiggle room to wrangle in another ship.

Stiles coming to the realization that he’s in love with Derek and just resigning himself to it. He knows that this love is different than the way he loved Lydia. It’s deeper and built on devotion and protection. But he’s still not enough,

Derek who is good and persistent, could never love stiles. Stiles knows he loves with people who are always just out of reach for him. He knew this when he fell in love with Lydia in the third grade. He felt it when told his mother that he loved her for the last time. He came to terms with it when he begged his dad to stop drinking, to rest, to eat better. And he resigned himself to it as he watches Derek hale smile. He is in love and knows that Derek will never love him back.

He just can’t imagine a world were Derek hale loves him back in the same way. So Stiles will love him, quietly but fiercely. Derek will never have to worry about anything with Stiles by his side. And Stiles will remain by his side for as long as he can. And maybe one day he’ll be able to watch Derek fall in love with someone else without it feeling like he’s dying but deep down he’s know that will never happen.

Do yall ever think about how whenever there’s been a particularly bad mission Jason is so distraught that he maybe goes back to crime alley and sits behind the dumpster that he just so happened to use to hide behind that one fateful night?

Yall ever think about how Jason probably sits there for hours, knees to his chest, head in his arms and wonders.. what if he never took those wheels? What if he just turned around and went back home that night? Was this really the life he was meant for?

You ever think about how, as he’s there on the ground, he scoffs and maybe thinks “I would’ve probably died in these streets if I hadn’t taken them.. maybe I was never meant to live. I died either way.”

Ever think about him there, caught in his own mind and Batman happens to stumble upon him during patrol?

He looks down at his son and sees that same scared little kid he saw all those years ago and his heart almost caves in on itself. He tries calling out his name but gets no response.

He slowly crouches down to try and meet his masked eyes and calls his name again with the same outcome. So he slowly and carefully reaches out and tries to take his helmet off without triggering him.

“Jason.. it’s Bruce. Can you hear me? Are you hurt? I’m going to take your helmet off, okay?.. alright how about now, Jason?”

He looks down at his son to see him with tear tracks down his face and a distant look in his eyes and his heart gives another pull. He calls Alfred to prepare Jason’s room and have a hot meal ready and as he does he’s carefully pulling Jason close and trying to get him on his feet.

Jason stumbles a bit before it looks like he’s slowly becoming aware of what’s happening. He looks surprised, yet still dazed, once he sees the other man.

“Bats? What’re you doing here?”

“Come on, son. We’re going home.”

“Home?”

Their voices are low and soft and while Jason is still confused he doesn’t protest and lets Bruce guide him to the Batmobile. Once they’ve reached it Bruce quickly examines him for any critical injuries before putting him in the passenger seat.

Once they reach the manor and have Jason washed and fed they’re leading him to bed. Alfred concluded he had no serious injuries, just the usual bumps, bruises and scratches.

“I think, master Bruce, that our young Jason just needs some rest. He’s clearly been having a tough time, it would be good for him to have some time away from the action.”

“I think you’re right, thank you Alfred. I’ll take it from here.”

Alfred exists the room leaving Bruce alone with Jason laying on the bed. His soft breathing the only noise in the room before Bruce sighs as he walks over and sits on the reading chair next to the bed. He looks at the man and wonders what happened on his latest mission to draw out this response. He reaches out and gently moves some hair away from the sleeping boys face before he can stop himself and accidentally wakes him up.

“Sorry, Jason. Go on back to sleep. I’ll go on to the library, just call if you need anything.”

As he’s working to get up Jason stops him.

“It’s okay Bruce. I don’t mind. Just didn’t expect to find you tonight..”

Bruce isn’t sure what to say as he sits back down so he goes with what he hopes is a safe route.

“I was worried you were badly hurt when I found you. Thankfully Alfred gave you the all clear.”

“Heh, good ol Alfie, huh?”

Bruce saw a faint smile and wistful look on Jason’s face. His voice sounded like he was close to drifting off to sleep again. Bruce, consumed with paternal instinct reached out again in an attempt to soothe Jason by running his hand along his hair.

It seemed to work since Jason was able to close his eyes and start up again with the soft rise and fall of his chest but not before he said one last thing with a smile on his face.

“Thanks, dad.”

I’ve talked about this before but imagine what it’s like for someone in a country/place where eliot is Top Most Wanted and then your tech guy finds a breakout star baseball player on their visual scanner that looks EXACTLY like spencer. but…there’s no way that’s him, right???

and then the next year it happens again but this time it’s some one hit wonder country singer kenneth crane that has like 78 tween-run fangirl blogs dedicated to him. you see a grainy video of him being chased by a horde of screaming teenage girls and ??? no way Eliot Last Thing You’ll Ever See Spencer is a country singer star just. signing pictures of his face right…?

a few months later your intern shows you footage of an eliot lookalike who is in san lorenzo talking about how there is dog fighting in the presidential palace and you just. sigh. because of course. a scant few days later the political geography of the country changes drastically and damien moreau is imprisoned. …interesting

and then a year of silence goes by. he still shows up as blips on the radar but he must have a good hacker working for him because his tracks on the internet are expertly erased.

every time you ask through interagency channels some random interpol guy talks in (condescending?) riddles at you and it also somehow feels like he’s threatening you

and then your friend who recently got into foreign hockey teams sends you a dropyourgloves video of someone called jacques the bear. you immediately get a headache (and watch some more videos because even you can admit this guy is a good hockey player)

and you know he’s a Bad Guy but it’s been admittedly a bit entertaining seeing what claim to fame he will come upon next. and his most recent actions over the few years make you wonder.

a few months later your phone pings because multiple heads of state evacuated from DC. the reason? eliot spencer was in town. you hear two days later a bioterrorist was taken down by… the report was redacted. your hacker tells you spencer and two teammates were behind the successful operation. which, huh.

not even a full year later it is released that spencer is dead and… you don’t know how to feel.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately is that small moment in “Air Turtle” where immediately after the Daves lose yet another game, Leo says how sorry he is and how he’s doing his best as the mascot. This moment is so short but it’s honestly jam-packed with a whole heap of characterization.

His need to apologize for things clearly not his fault - especially when it feels like he messes up the job he was given despite doing the best he can (the phrase “it’s not about you” takes a new meaning when this is one of the lessons to be learned from that - that he is not always solely responsible for things going wrong), his need to save face and make a connection with an older adult man in his life (something he consistently does throughout the series - he’s got a few daddy issues, always collecting potential father figures, it’s no wonder he jumps at the bit to keep rapport), and the way he sounds and looks and the words he chooses really pushes how he is just a kid (“Mr. the Dunk, I’m so sorry”).

Like I know it’s a one off moment that doesn’t truly mean much, but when put against the rest of the series it works really well with the rest of Leo’s established character and helps in solidifying later concepts as well.
