DESCENDANTS: RISE OF READ OPINIONS AND SPOILERS*

Absolutely despised seeing Uma without her right hand or even her left hand and random pirates who def weren’t her crew from before but I still actually really enjoyed the movie, I had a feeling I would from the trailer. My biggest complaint (aside from no Harry) would def be the ending. They needed to hurry things along a bit or added like 20-30 minutes; we shoulda seen the castle coming as a full scene, going from the past to present and everything just working out is a bit lazy. As much as I really enjoyed the VK’s (Uliana and co.) maybe we didn’t need to focus on them so much. At one point I actually thought they were a red herring. I thought they were gonna be wild and totally change the face of Cinderella for us by making it so that she was the one who pulled the prank on Bridget, not the VK’s and we’d be like wtf and the daughter would be like wtf and we’d all have gagged 😱. . . But they didn’t 🫤. Anyway o h my god, the cgi was so much better and even the set design was a lot better than the original IMO, i thought the dialogue was even better too. The music while I thought was good was def not that girl (D2); she was kinda just cute 🤷🏻‍♀️) anyway a solid 81% from me 👍

D3 Rewatch

Y’all, there are two moments that may have gone unnoticed. I can’t remember cuz it was FIVE YEARS AGO but in the spirit of Rise of Red coming, here’s another random analysis posts.

Two Harry Hook moments in D3 stuck out to me

His whole character in D2 centered around being an unhinged second hand to Uma. In D3 he was more played out to be a MASSIVE flirt, very obnoxious, and still very unhinged.

Except:

(To Ben) You’re probably just gonna throw us all back inside.

(To Mal, on Uma’s behalf) You talk pretty, but she’s already made up her mind.

In these moments, for just a brief second, HARRY HOOK SEEMS SANE.

The situation gets real. His safety (and Uma’s) are not only threatened but guaranteed to be tanked with the return to hell on earth, and his unhinged facade (come on, its a cover) drops.

You can also say it drops when the groups reconvene after finding Ben and he asks Uma if she’s okay all quiet like, but lbr we’re all rewatched that scene to its death, Harry being soft to Uma is nothing new.

Anybody else glance this?

Descendants the rise of red has without a doubt the weirdest, most abrupt ending I have ever seen. Like, I know they’re teasing a sequel, but they were doing so much and then did not deliver on any of it, and I have never seen been more disappointed in a movie

Been thinking about Hosea a lot as I write this analysis on Dutch and Micah.

Maybe I’ll eventually whip something up about him, but for now I’m left with thoughts about knowing that not only is Hosea just as guilty as Dutch when it comes to how their boys were brought up (and continued to be treated through adulthood and ultimately up to their deaths), but also the way the two irreparably damaged John and Arthur’s entire lives beyond even their own comprehension. FURTHERMORE, they set forth a viscous cycle of familial violence and neglect that maintained momentum into the next generation. (See: John and Jack.)

The way Hosea’s action, but more importantly his inaction had in part led to… well, [gestures vaguely to RDR1 + RDR2].

Hosea might have been gentler than Dutch on the surface, but he saw it all, and at times both implicitly and explicitly encouraged it through the meticulous timing of his decisions to remain a “silent watcher.”

Yes, refusal to mitigate the violence makes him complicit, but the matter of the fact is… Hosea can’t even feign partial innocence as a third-party bystander because of how calculated he is in nature.

Additionally, there is no “third party.” Dutch and Hosea are a single unit. They occupy the same space even as two separate individuals in John and Arthur’s lives.

The deliberate nature of Hosea’s inaction puts him in the same position as the “perpetrator” because he isn’t just a watcher, he corroborates directly with Dutch and agrees with what he is doing on principle. He reenforces it in perhaps more subtle ways, but that doesn’t make him any less responsible for the outcome.

The only difference between the two is that while they’re dealing different cards, they are playing the exact same game.
