No Room for Error
Azriel x Reader
word count: 1.5k content: [ explicit sexual content, unprotected PIV, az does not pull out (as is typical with my fics lmao), hate sex, explicit language ] summary: Your heated argument with Azriel during a mission turns into an unexpected, yet not first-time, encounter in a broom closet. author's note: AZ AND Y/N SPIES AZ AND Y/N SPIES AAAAAA i've been wanting to write this one for a while, i'm happy it's finally in existence somewhere outside of my brain and writing drive lol ✦ . Masterlist . ✦
“You really couldn’t wait to make your move, could you?” you snap, frustration leaking into your voice as you shift again, the small space feeling tighter by the second. “We’ve been plotting this mission for months, Azriel.”
“I’m getting the job done, aren’t I?” His tone is dismissive, the usual bite to it harsher. “Maybe if you focused less on talking and more on following orders, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”
“Following orders?” You scoff, pressing back against him involuntarily, even though you’re not sure if you want more space or less. “Maybe you’d actually listen to me if you stopped thinking you know everything.”
“I do know everything,” he growls in your ear, a dark edge to his words that makes something inside you tighten. “But you’re too busy trying to prove me wrong to realize it.”
“I’m not trying to prove you wrong,” you retort, voice sharp as you shift against him again. “You’re just impossible.”
His breath huffs against your skin. “And yet, here we are,” he murmurs, tone low, barely hiding the edge of amusement. “You’re not exactly walking away.”
“This is ridiculous,” you mutter, shifting uncomfortably in the cramped space. “I should’ve completed twice as many missions as you by now. This was supposed to be my assignment, not yours.”
“Keep telling yourself that,” Azriel snaps, his voice tight with annoyance, the tension between you both palpable. “Maybe if you didn’t rush into things all the time, you’d actually finish your missions instead of barely scraping by.”
“I don’t need you to tell me how to do my job,” you retort, clenching your teeth as the walls feel like they’re closing in. “I’m just fine without your help, Shadowsinger.” You spit out the title like it’s venom, though the words feel hollow as soon as they leave your mouth. The competition between you two was fierce—always had been.
“It’s not about help,” Azriel mutters, shifting just enough that you feel his presence even closer. “It’s about keeping up. You always think you can do everything on your own, but in the end, you just screw it up. It’s like you're trying to outdo me for the sake of it.”
“Outdo you?” You laugh bitterly, barely able to move without pressing into him. “I’ve been outdoing you for months, Azriel. You’re just too arrogant to see it.”
His laugh is low and dark. “If you were outdoing me, we wouldn’t be stuck in this closet right now, would we?”
“Oh, you think this is my fault?” You almost scoff, your words dripping with irritation, but the heat between you is undeniable now, thick with more than just frustration. “Maybe if you didn’t play the lone wolf every damn time, we wouldn’t be here.”
“I didn’t play ‘lone wolf,’” he growls. “You’re just too proud to accept I’m better at this than you.”
Your hand moves, fumbling to adjust—or maybe to steady yourself—and the shift in position has Azriel’s breath catching. The sound sends a rush of heat through you, though you’re still unwilling to admit it aloud.
“Better than me?” you ask, voice dropping dangerously low, your lips curling into a sharp, humorless smile. “That’s rich, coming from someone who’s been riding my coattails for months. Admit it, Azriel, you can’t stand that I’m winning.”
His hand tightens at your waist, and his next words are spoken with deliberate, biting calm. “Winning? You’re delusional. You’ve never beaten me, and you never will.”
Your lips part for another retort, but the words die on your tongue, the sound morphing into a moan as he moves. The shift in position presses him against you in a way that makes your breath hitch, his body hitting that spot deep inside you.
A faint sound of footsteps outside the closet snaps you back to reality. You barely have time to register it before Azriel’s hand is covering your mouth, his fingers warm and firm against your lips, stifling any sound you might make. His other hand grips your hip harder, pulling you even closer as he continues to thrust into you, each movement making you feel him deeper, the rhythm brutal and unforgiving.
“Do you want them to hear you?” he growls low in your ear, his voice dripping with dark amusement. “Want to fuck up the mission? Want to give us away?” His voice is tight with barely-contained pleasure, his breath hot against your neck. “You better keep quiet, sweetheart. We can’t afford mistakes.”
You can feel the cold leather of your pants bunched up at your thighs, the heat of his body pressing against you, the sensation of him pushing against you with every thrust, sending jolts of pleasure that make it even harder to keep silent. Your body trembles beneath him, every instinct screaming for release, but the fear of getting caught only makes the tension sharper.
A desperate whine escapes from your throat, muffled by his hand, and you feel him pause. The sound of footsteps somewhere outside the closet slows, a beat of silence hanging heavy in the air. His breath hitches slightly, but his grip moves up to your waist, and then, in one fluid motion, he presses his hips harder against you.
“Am I going to have to tell Rhys that you cost us months of work?” His words are a dark tease, but the edge of warning lingers in his voice. He pulls back, only to thrust forward again, his hips grinding into yours with slow, powerful force, each movement designed to make you feel every inch of him, to make sure you can’t forget for a second what’s happening. “Think about that, sweetheart. All of this… for nothing.”
Your breath catches as he shifts again, his rhythm turning into something deeper, more intense. The tight space only heightens the feeling of him—every inch of his body pressed against yours, making it impossible to escape the raw heat between you. He grinds into you again, his control slipping as the pressure mounts, but his voice stays dangerously low.
The footsteps outside fade, growing softer as they move away from the door. Azriel’s grip loosens slightly, and he pulls his hand from your mouth, his breath ragged against your skin. You can’t hold back anymore.
“Please, Azriel, don’t stop, I need it,” you whine, the words slipping out before you can stop them, desperate for more.
His response is immediate, cold, and calculating. “You don’t need anything. You want it.” His tone is firm, void of any tenderness. “You always want more, don’t you?”
Before you can answer, he shifts again, thrusting into you with a deep, controlled force that makes your body seize in response. His fingers dig into the flesh of your hips, using the grip to pull you onto him again and again.
“Tell me,” he murmurs, voice low but commanding, “do you always beg like this? Is this how you get Rhys to give you assignments I’m the obvious choice for? Or am I the only one who gets to see this side of you?”
Your heart races, his words swallowing you whole. But you’re beyond caring now, beyond anything but the feeling of him inside you. His hips grind into you with a brutal, possessive rhythm, and you can’t help but let out a moan, your back arching as you press against the wall. You can feel the pressure building, every part of you straining for release, but his control is absolute, keeping you on the edge, making you ache with every moment. You know you can’t hold back much longer.
With a final, deep thrust, he shudders, his body tightening as he finishes inside you. His breath is heavy, ragged against your neck, and he pauses, just for a moment, as if to savor the feeling of you beneath him.
Azriel pulls out slowly, his movements deliberate, and you feel a brief emptiness where he was. Without a word, he tucks himself back into his pants with calm efficiency, as if there were nothing out of the ordinary.
“Pull your pants up,” he says, his tone cool, detached. There’s no hint of the intensity from moments ago, as if he can shut it off in an instant.
You blink, the haze of pleasure clouding your mind as you slowly process his words. What? You’re still trying to make sense of everything when he pulls back as far as the cramped broom closet allows, glancing at you with that unreadable expression.
“We’ve got shit to do,” he shrugs, voice colder now, businesslike. “Maybe I’ll stop by your room tonight.” There’s a dangerous flicker in his eyes as he says it, but it’s gone before you can even react.
He opens the closet door and steps out, holding a hand out to you. You hesitate for a moment, still reeling, but you take his hand, letting him pull you back out into the hall.

Title: Wash Day
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: none
Paring: Paige Bueckers x fem reader
Fandom: Women's basketball
Summary: Letting Paige help you with your hair.... call in reinforcement.... right now
Tag: @starlighttsv
It was wash day, and I was already regretting not starting earlier. The coils of my hair were stretched and dry, practically begging for some love. As I sat cross-legged on the floor of Paige’s dorm, surrounded by products—conditioners, leave-ins, oils, and detangling brushes—I sighed. Paige stood above me, hands on her hips, looking at the scene with mild panic.
“Babe,” Paige started, crouching down to my level. “I love you, but I don’t think I’m qualified for this.”
I gave her a tired smile. “You said you wanted to help.”
“I did! I do!” she quickly corrected. “But this… this looks like a full-time job. Are you sure I can’t call in backup?”
I rolled my eyes, pulling the spray bottle closer. “I’ve got it. Just—pass me the wide-tooth comb.”
Paige did as I asked but couldn’t resist adding, “If things go south, I’m calling Kayla. Or Azzi. Maybe even Ice. Someone who actually knows what they’re doing.”
“I’m right here, you know,” I teased, spraying water onto a section of my hair.
---
Twenty minutes in, Paige had convinced me to let her detangle a section. Big mistake.
“Okay, so… I just start at the ends, right?”
“Yes, *gently*,” I reminded her, wincing as she yanked a little too hard.
“Sorry! Sorry! This stuff is like a jungle!”
I smacked her arm playfully. “It’s not *stuff,* it’s my hair. And you’re supposed to be helping, not clowning.”
She grinned sheepishly, then held up her phone. “Alright, I’m calling Kayla.”
“Paige, no—”
“Too late!” she interrupted, already FaceTiming her.
Kayla’s face popped up on the screen, and she immediately burst into laughter. “Oh my God, what is happening over there?”
“I tried to help with wash day,” Paige admitted, flipping the camera to show the mess surrounding us. “And I think I’m failing.”
Kayla shook her head, laughing. “Yeah, no. I’m coming over. You need professional help.”
“Bring snacks!” Paige added.
---
About fifteen minutes later, Kayla showed up with not just snacks but KK and Azzi in tow. Ice and Aubrey were close behind, and it was clear they had *all* come to clown Paige.
KK was the loudest, pulling out her phone the moment she walked in. “Y’all, look at this!” she said, going live on Instagram. “Paige tried to help her girlfriend with wash day and almost ruined the whole operation!”
“KK, stop!” Paige yelled, trying to grab the phone.
“Too late,” KK said, laughing as the comments rolled in.
Azzi sat beside me on the floor, inspecting my hair with an approving nod. “You’re doing great, by the way. Paige, not so much.”
“Azzi!” Paige groaned, while Kayla pushed her to the side and got to work.
---
With Kayla leading the charge, the atmosphere turned into a mini hair care seminar. Azzi and Kayla worked on sectioning and detangling, while Ice handed them products like she was the hairdresser’s assistant. Aubrey and KK were still making jokes in the background, much to Paige’s frustration.
“See, you have to take smaller sections,” Kayla explained, showing Paige how to work through my coils without yanking.
Paige nodded solemnly. “Smaller sections. Got it.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at how seriously she was taking the lesson now. “You’re really invested in this, huh?”
“Of course I am,” she said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “If I’m going to help you, I want to do it right.”
KK made a gagging noise from the corner. “Y’all are so soft, it’s disgusting.”
“Hush, KK,” Kayla said, throwing a hair tie at her.
---
By the time we were done, my hair was clean, detangled, and styled in chunky twists. I felt lighter, and the soreness in my scalp was worth it. Paige sat beside me, looking proud of herself despite not doing much.
“So, how’d I do?” she asked, grinning.
“Honestly?” I teased. “You’re better as moral support.”
“Rude,” she replied, pulling me into her lap. “But fair.”
“Next time,” Kayla said, packing up the hair products, “just call me first. It’ll save everyone some time.”
“Noted,” Paige said, stealing one of the snacks Kayla had brought.
---
Later that night, as Paige and I cuddled on the couch, she played with one of the twists in my hair.
“I really do want to learn, you know,” she said softly.
I looked up at her, my heart melting. “I know. And I appreciate it.”
“Even if KK clowns me for the rest of my life?”
“Especially then,” I replied, kissing her cheek.
She smiled, pulling me closer. “Good. Because I’m not giving up.”

okok so for the nika angst how about it’s something with her injury and reader trying to help her and it’s appreciated but nika feels helpless since reader helps with everything and nika starts closing herself off ??
idk something like that 🤷♀️
FINE LINE - N.M
finally finished this one after the long day I had (which was literally just shopping and watching the UConn game). So please...enjoyyy and hopefully it's not to bad.
Not sure the word count but there is no warnings!!
"hey, Niks. I'm gonna head to work, um, do you need anything before I go?" A simple question. Nothing that could be taken the wrong way.
"Nope."
"Okay...I'll pick something up for us to eat on my way home, if you want me too."
"Sounds good."
My lips form a thin line, "Okay, just text me something you'd want. I love you."
"Love you."
I didn't want to think to much into it, but since nika's injury, I've tried my best to be the supportive girlfriend who stays by her side. But something just seems off with her anymore. I don't know if it's just the fact that's she's injured that keeps her down...or if I'm smothering her with my presence.
I made my way to work, helping the Seattle storm players stay up on workouts and anything else they needed. Quickly, I finished whatever paperwork was thrown at me. At this point, the job had lost its charm. Everything felt broken. Between the players, the staff, everything was finally falling apart...and I had no control over it.
"You good there?" Jewell's voice broke through whatever had been brewing in my mind.
"I guess," rummaging through the file I had been trying to sort, something to keep my mind off everything else. Which, clearly wasn't working.
The woman moved her way to the desk, leaning against it, "you don't sound so sure."
"I'm not."
The teasing seemed to dissipate once those two words left my mouth. "Y/n, is everything good? If you needa talk, the teams right here."
"I...I don't know. Everything seems to be falling apart." Jewell titled her head, as if to tell me to keep going.
"The team is falling apart. Whether it's the staff or it's the players. Then there was nika's injury...and I feel like I'm losing her. She barely talks to me, I can't tell if I'm doing to much or not enough." I hadn't even realized the tears that started to fall, Jewell coming up to me to hold my hands, "I just feel like everything is slowly freeing itself from my grasp...and I can't do anything about it but watch. Watch the team start to hate each other. Watch everyone I work with rip each other's throats out cause there's no way for communication. And...and then watch my girlfriend fall deeper into whatever mental crisis she's going through until there's no way of getting her back." The sobs were uncontrollable. I hadn't realized how much I needed to talk to someone. I was so focused on everyone else. I forgot about myself, the one thing that was supposed to matter the most I let slip the furthest away from me.
"Hey, y/n, just take the rest of the day off," I went to argue, but Jewell just shook off my response, "don't worry about the team, don't worry about anyone in this building...other than you."
"I can't just leave."
"I'll talk to someone, explain what's going on. They'll understand, everyone needs a mental health day every once in awhile," The woman's soft smile sent a wave of comfort over me. The first feeling of comfort I've had in awhile, "and about Nika...I'm sure she's dealing with a lot. Going through an injury like an ACL tear, it takes a toll on every aspect of your life. Now I'm not giving her a reason to shut you out...but give her just a little bit of leeway."
I nod, fighting the urge to crash into her and just hug her....which goes right out the window the second she opens her arms inviting me in. Without a second thought, I bury my face in her shoulder, trying to take the comfort the woman was offering.
"How do I even talk to Nika? I've tried...nothing seems to bring her back to me...." Had I tried hard enough? Was it really my fault for her drifting away from me?
"Like I said, I'm sure there's a lot going on in that thick head of hers," a small chuckle escaped my lips, "but I'm sure she'll have a reason that made sense to her on why she was pushing you away. And please, if it's extremely stupid...let me know and I'll prove her how stupid that move was."
A smile spreads across my lips, "thanks Jewells...I needed this."
"I know...you looked like you were gonna throw this desk at me when I walked in."
"Whatever...I'm gonna go talk to Nika. I just need to know she's okay."
Jewell seemed to soften even more, "Nika is gonna be okay. Now or even a month away from now...she's gonna be okay."
"Thank you," she pulled me into another hug, letting me go, allowing me to make my way back to the apartment my girlfriend and I shared. The small place we've started to call home after just a couple months. Meeting about a year ago at UConn, the giant campus somehow leading to us meeting each other at one of the many cafes that were scattered throughout it. The way I had finished my studies for physical therapy and she had just finished her last year on the basketball team. I had been praying to get a job for Seattle storm since I was little, not being able to play but hoping to help the people who did. Then, Nika got drafted, sending her straight my way. We got close over her training camp days, which lead to her making the team, to her needing a place. I just happened to overhear and offered her a spot in my apartment. Little did I know she'd end up being my girlfriend a month later.
But here I was today...reminiscing the last couple months like our relationship was in the past. A sudden wash of dread spread throughout me, stopping me from getting out of my car as I sat in front of the apartment. I almost had to bribe myself with the fact that if I got everything out now, it'd all be fixed later.
Opening the door to the small place left me sick, walking up the stairs to our shared room was even worse. I stood in front of the closed door, quiet sounds floated around from the TV. I knocked a couple times; no answer. I opened the door slowly, catching Nika sitting upright - hair down, hood over her head, covers pulled up to her chin - a dead stare right at the TV. Not even a little acknowledgement of me being her.
"Hey," it came out rough, hoarse. My nerves became uneasy. Knocking her head to the side, her eyes fell on mine, but it lasted no more than a second. "Can we talk?"
Nika tensed, "about what?"
I made my way to the bed, sitting beside the girl, "Us."
"Us?" Her head snapped in my direction. A wash of worry or nervousness flooded her face.
"Yeah," fidgeting with my hands, I continued, "Are you not happy...like...in our relationship? Am I being to much? Or maybe I'm not enough for you? Maybe I wasn't able to help you like I thought I would? I don't know, I probably shouldn't have brought you back here, to Seattle, when you could've just went back hom-"
Nika's hands made contact with mine, her body moved to be faced towards me. "Are you unhappy?"
"...I...I don't know."
Nika's eyes widened, shock, worry, nervousness, anything and everything seemed to hit her like a truck in that very moment. "Y/n...I'm sorry...maybe we should end things."
Tears swelled in my eyes, this wasn't anything that I was expecting. "You wanna break it off?"
"I...I don't know," the girl started, staring off at the small contact that we were making, "maybe it'll be better for you. You could live your life without worrying about me 24/7. Maybe you'll find more time to be with your friends instead of stuck in bed with me. Maybe you'll start to love your job again without having to worry if I'm upset that you get to work and I don't. Maybe you'll be able to actually live your life without having to worry about the disappointment you come home to everyday. Maybe you'll be able to find someone who will be able to treat you the way you're supposed to be treated. I love you too much to keep you stuck in the house with me. I love you so much I need to let you have a life, not for you to only care about mine."
Tears fell from her cheeks, sobs erupted out of me. The stress and hurt of Nika's words hitting me harder than anything else ever has. "Nika...I love you...I don't want anything but you."
Nika shook her head, "no...I'm a burden on you...I can't hold you down anymore."
"Nika...please...I can't live without you. I would do anything for you...even if it's ruining my life, I would ruin my life over and over again before I let you go." The brunette couldn't keep eye contact. Anything was better than looking at me at this moment. "Nika, I'm not letting you break us up."
"Why? I can't be the girlfriend you deserve. I'm stuck here...and you just get stuck with me."
"I wouldn't want it any other way, Niks."
Her eyes fell on mine, "I just don't understand...I can't even stand myself right now."
"And I will always be able to stand you... I'll do more than just 'stand' you, Nika, I'm always gonna love you." Her eyes fell again, she pulled me into her. A hug. The first one she's initiated in awhile.
"I'm sorry," her voice breaking, "I...I just want you to be happy."
"I'm always happy...but that's only because I'm with you, Nika."
She let out a soft chuckle, "I don't know what I'd do without you, y/n/n."
A smile, small, but still a smile stretched across my face, "I don't know what you'd do either."
She moved to look me in the face, "you're the only thing that's getting me through this injury...I hope you know that."
"I'm just glad to hear I'm helping you at all," I take her hand in mine, a soft spark ignited between us.
"I know I haven't said it to you-"
"you haven't really said much in awhile."
Her face softened more, "I know, and I'm sorry about that, but I just want to let you know... you're more than enough for me. Over the last couple weeks...I had this feeling that I was becoming a burden on you...and I thought if I separated myself from you, you'd finally realize I wasn't enough for you."
"Nika..."
"Y/n...I want nothing more than you in my life, always and forever."
"And you'll get that...cause I'm not going anywhere." A easy quiet settled between us, she moved to lay in my arms while I rubbed gently on her arm. Her breaths seemed to fall into a steady pace, a pattern. She fell asleep...in my arms...but things just felt easier. A weight lifted off my shoulder, and I'm sure it was the same for her.
I placed a soft kiss on her head, settling my head on hers. Drifting away to sleep that was almost inevitable, I whispered three words, "I love you." Those three words I would never go without telling the woman in my arms. I wanted her to know I meant them ...even in her worst moments.
A/n hopefully this is to your liking (the person who requested this) and it was more angsty than what I usually write.

we can be pirates
ship: river (all souls) x reader (gender neutral)
summary: river wants to give her daughter the best birthday party possible. noticing that it's personal for her, you help.
word count: 2400+
notes: requested here. split into two parts bc it surprised me how long it was getting. title from taylor swift's 'seven'. TELL ME THE SKULLS DONT GIVE PIRATE VIBES
River sits on the couch you two hauled off the road just last summer, flipping through the pages of a worn-out book on crafts. Beside her sits her mini-me, her daughter Jade who always loves being dressed up just like her mama. Big brown eyes go wide with excitement as the little girl points at one of the pictures.
"Mama, we can make this for my party," she exclaims, her small finger tracing the outline of a paper flower.
River hums, a tight smile on her face. "Yeah, baby. It doesn't look too hard. That'll be great."
Jade giggles and marks down the page number, already a small list of ideas on her pad of paper, her legs swinging.
Despite her smile, River can't help but think of how she wants more for her little girl. How she hates that Jade already knows they have to cut costs like this. Maybe if she pushed down her ego that told her she can do it all alone, without a cent of Silas' dirty money. River shakes her head, willing those thoughts out. She focuses on the pride blooming in her chest that Jade's still so happy and content with homemade efforts. She's raised a smart, kind, and wonderful girl. God, she can't even believe her baby's turning six in a week.
"You wanna help me?" she asks, poking Jade's cheek, who has now moved on to the section about invitation cards.
"Of course!"
This is when you walk in, joining them on the couch. You were busy preparing dinner so you didn't catch the full conversation, but the apartment's small enough where you could catch bits and pieces even without eavesdropping. Before you have a chance to tell them the food's ready, Jade shoves the book in your hands.
"You can pick one! I like this and this and-" Jade's pointing all over the place, choosing invitation cards she likes the look of seemingly by random if you didn't know her well. Luckily, you've had the chance to. Under River's upbringing and her own endless curiosity, Jade loves so many things it's hard to think of one straightforward theme. She loves her monster trucks as much as her stuffed puppy, as much as the manga the older kids in the apartment complex show her, as much as nature and princesses and scary stories.
"Woah, woah, slow your roll, kiddo." You wipe your hands on the apron before putting your hands on the book, knowing you'd get glares if you greased it up. "What's this about a party? I thought you didn't want to do a big one," you question.
"She doesn't. Says she'd be alright if it was just the three of us sharing pizzas and watching TV," River answers, to which Jade nods. "But Jade's in school now, you know? All the other moms already side-eye me for having her so young. I don't wanna give them more ammo, or make them tell their kids not to hang out with Jade anymore."
River has complained to you extensively before about the mom politics going on. Invite someone's kid to a party and they don't invite your kid back? Consider yourself dead to everyone. Couldn't bring muffins to their stupid bake sale? Worst mom ever award.
"I want Jade to have fun with her friends and not worry about being teased about not having a huge unicorn cake, or whatever. So..." River gestures to the book pressed into your hands, and you note all the marked pages of ideas.
You know the deeper reason too. How deep down, River wants better for Jade than what she had, never wants her to feel like she's going without. She wants Jade to feel like the other kids. To be able to stay a kid for longer, not cutting back on the toys she asks for just because you two are going from paycheck to paycheck. That's your responsibility as the adults. She shouldn't have to worry, shouldn't be punished for being born River's kid. It's something you've assured River about over and over again, that Jade's lucky to be hers and that the little girl knows it. But you can understand that wish too. Jade's such a sweetie. If any kid deserves to feel special on their birthday and get everything they ask for, it's her.
So it's no surprise that River isn't sold on the whole DIY party vibe. Resourceful is one thing, but she hates feeling cheap. Hates asking for or needing cash. She'll let go of her pride if the situation gets tough, but damn does she hate when people assume she can't take care of her girl.
"Hey, Jadey?" you ask, scooching down to address her directly. The two of you have agreed to not talk about money problems in front of her, so you know she should be far away for this discussion. "Can you go to the kitchen and turn the stove off? And when you're done, how about you write down all your friends' names that you want there, and draw them all a special invitation?"
Jade perks up at the request, liking to go on 'special missions' to help you or River. She likes the responsibility, likes that her favourite people can rely on her. It's part of what makes her such a good kid. "OK! Here!" As she hops off of the couch, she hands you the book. "They're gonna be the best pictures ever!"
"Don't come back too soon, OK? We're gonna come up with lots of ideas to surprise you!" you call out.
You turn to River, who shoves the book aside, frustrated. "Fuck. I don't wanna be a wimp about this, honestly. Or make it all about me."
"Hey." Your hand goes to her shoulder, rubbing right where she always seems to get tense. "It's fine. It's your first time living too. Or whatever the phrase is."
"It's just- I would've done anything as a kid to have had a birthday party," she shares, shaking her head like she thinks she's being ridiculous. But River does melt into your touch, letting you start to rub up, getting to the junction where her neck meets her shoulder. "This sucks to say, but I was always too ashamed to take any of my friends back home. I'm grateful for it now, but it was tiny and it smelled and I knew it. Didn't want them to give me shit for it."
Listening intently, your fingers trail over her shoulders as River sits up and tugs her knees to her chest. "And I didn't wanna hassle my mom. She was already doing so much to take care of me and put food on the table," River tells you. "My friends invited me to ones with the fancy custom cakes and the goody bags filled with toys and snacks, you know? The parties where the kids get to wear crowns and the parents take a million photos. My mom couldn't afford to take a day off of work, and I didn't have enough allowance to buy a gift anyways. So I never went to any."
And you can understand that. It's not like being a loner is always a choice. Sometimes you know that even if you try your best, you won't fit in, so why try? Pretend it's a choice. Pretend you're above it all, too cool for it, when all you really want to do is have fun with everyone.
"She's turning six. We could turn a sprinkler on and call it a water park and the kids would scream and laugh more than at some expensive party," you say. They're easy to impress at that age, at least in your own memory of being a kid.
River shakes her head. She wraps her arms around her knees tighter, resting her chin on them. "A water park? Really? She's six. She wants a real party with her friends, not just an excuse to run around like crazy. And it's not like we have a backyard for them to run in anyways." Something in her throat trembles, and it makes her voice rise with frustration. "I want to give her something special, y'know? I want her to feel like a princess for a day, not a charity case. Throwing around some paper decorations isn't gonna make the apartment bigger."
You know that tone, and you want Jade to have the very best too, so you fix on a more serious face, not wanting your girlfriend to feel like she's alone in this. "Fine. OK, so what's... special but free? Botanical gardens? Beach?" you start to pitch and brainstorm. "What's the best space to pizzazz with these paper flowers that Jade's gonna kick ass at making?"
When your hand reaches her ear, she just melts. It's a soothing gesture that helps when River gets these horrific stress migraines, pinching and rubbing along the lobe to coax blood flow. River thinks for a moment, considering those suggestions. "Yeah, the beach could work," River says slowly, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Jade loves the water, and I know her friends would have a blast playing in the waves."
"We'd keep an eye on them the whole time obviously," you add. "Section off an area just for the party, probably with whatever decorations Jade's picked.
More on board with the crafts now that they have a space in mind, she hands you the list of ideas Jade already jotted down. "Here. If you can read her handwriting."
Just like Jade's interests, her ideas are all over the place. Not that you don't appreciate her creative process, but cowboys, aliens, and dragons don't sound very beachy. There are pages that she scrawled down that go together though. The foam sword, the paper pirate hat, and a treasure map. You'll pour coffee on it, crumple it a little, and singe the edges with a lighter to make it look authentic. A pirate theme sounds like the ideal way to make everything cohesive, especially since it'll keep the kids entertained so no one goes home complaining to their parents.
"It could be like a scavenger hunt," River says. She's been steadily getting into the whole idea, pitching all sorts of ideas to make Jade's special day great. "Kills two birds with one stone. The map is something they actually use instead of a set piece and we'll know where they are when they run around. Make sure they stay where we can see 'em.
"Yeah, I like that! When I was a kid, I read these Skullduggery books and was like, damn, imagine digging something up. Me and my siblings buried this time capsule at the beach, but I'm pretty sure it just got swept away by the waves."
"You shoulda dug deeper," River teases, but pecks your lips when you pout at the memory. "OK, so that's settled for the main activity. What can we put in the chest that won't break the bank?"
Chocolate coins, obviously. The two of you take turns listing out treasures that you'd find for cheap, like candy necklaces and plastic swords that will be sturdier than the foam ones. Eyepatches are a must too. Plastic telescopes and octopus pop-its.
River writes down a note that Jade could make her friends a custom friendship bracelet to thank them for coming and commemorate the occasion. Plus, it would get that rainbow loom set you two bought her out of the storage. Jade went on a bracelet-making kick two months ago but got bored, so now you've got all these extra loom bands around.
The two of you get to throwing around food ideas (you, personally, wanna serve chicken nuggets but brand them as 'gold nuggets') when Jade comes out of her room.
"Ta-da!" the girl says, holding out her birthday invitations. All told, there are seven, with radically different drawings attached. There's a horse (which looks like a giraffe with the neck honestly), a robot, a ballet dancer... "I've got six best best friends, so they've all gotta come. Mackenzie's got a little brother that should probably come too since they're always together, so I made him a smaller one."
"It's very sweet of you to think of your friend's brother." River shoots you a look as she says this, since Jade has been very fixated on siblings ever since you moved in. You shrug. You're not opposed to the idea but babies are expensive so the conversation has never gone longer than "that'd be cool!"
"These are awesome, kiddo! Think you could add something to each of 'em? Me and your mama thought a theme would make your birthday even cooler," you say.
"A theme? Oh, what is it, what is it?" Jade's already got her crayons in hand, ready to add to her masterpieces depending on your next words.
"Mmm, let's just say that you could be a mermaid, or have a peg-leg, but you can't turn up as a land-lubber." You cringe as soon as you're done saying it (you had been writing clue ideas for the scavenger hunt for the last ten minutes, OK?), but it makes River laugh so it's worth it.
"Pirates?!" You think the windows might shatter, that's how loud Jade's shriek is.
"Hell yeah, baby girl!" River says. "You like it?"
"I love it! Thank you so so much!" Jade leaps between you two, her tiny arms trying their best to wrap around and hug you both at the same time.
Upon seeing River's excitement as she shows Jade the list of ideas you two came up with, you can't help but smile. Your two favourite girls in the world are so hyped now that they're not even thinking about the cost, which was what you've wanted from the start. Jade pores over the list, nodding and adding little notes to the margins. There needs to be vegetarian options for her friend, Priya, for example, and she doesn't want it soooo different from the other food that Priya feels like she's missing out.
The day ends with half-made paper flowers, hot glue on foam, and Jade's rainbow loom taking up space on the kitchen counter and dozens of tiny colourful rubber bands all over the floor. Not to mention the dinner you cooked, which has gone cold and forgotten still on the stove. But when you turn to see Jade passed out on the couch, River's eyes lock with yours. Tired and pissed off from watching too many DIY YouTube tutorials, your girlfriend mouths "thank you. Jade was so happy," and you wouldn't have it any other way.

You've done this before so this is exclusively self indulgent but can you give your thoughts on DRDT foil theory again haha... I'm enamored by it and think about it daily.
I'll point out as well that there's been a trend regarding which characters are relevant to the chapter's case based on the order of the foils so far.
In chapter 1 it was [Xander, Min, Teruo & Charles] while in chapter 2 it was [Eden, Arei, Nico, Ace] - following this train of logic next chapter's main players would be [Hu, Veronika, Rose, J].
Hu's arc has just started (her beliefs are being challenged), Veronika became worst + Arturo is going to be centered at the start of chapter 3, Rose's arc just started + a money motive would be relevant to her & J's conflict with Arturo is going to be centered at the start of chapter 3.
Feel free to ignore this if you feel it's too repetitive, I just like it when I see people talking about my theory lol.
Well, if the creator of the recap foil theory asks me to talk about it, who am I to deny? It's probably, like, in my top three theories about DRDT, so I'm gonna enjoy talking about it! :D
(Btw I totally get you about enjoying when people talk about your theory. Whenever I see someone mention one of my posts I always go ":O that's me :D" it's great lol)
CW: Murder, electrocution, execution, suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, discrimination against a non-binary person, manipulation, poverty, harmful environments during childhood.
As a quick recap (heh): at the end of the CH1 recap video, the characters are paired up in a certain way. The theory states that they're paired up in a way that represents some of the most important foils in the cast. And... well, it seems to hold up quite well! I'll talk about them here in the order they show up in the recap video.
1) Xander & Min
And what a start! These two are basically eternal foils, with everything about their characters being contrasted with each other in some way or another. From the very first moment they're seen together, in Min's introduction, they immediately start beefing simply due to their respective talents.
The biggest point of contrast comes from their past with education. From Visiting Graves, we know Xander used to be a diligent student like Min, but he stopped when his family died while he was away studying. He's come to the conclusion that the things taught in school are oftentimes kind of useless for most people's lives, and his rejection of the education system kickstarted his rebellion against systemic issues in general.
Min, for her part, actually has a lot of the same views. Her Bonus Episode makes that pretty clear; she doesn't think things like Hope's Peak's history are really all that useful, and feels insecure because she doesn't see the same value in her talent as she does in others. However, Min still wants to maintain her talent, at least in title, seen as her first instinct when the killing game started was to grab an anatomy textbook and start studying it. Meanwhile, Xander dislikes his talent title greatly, as he believes calling him a "Rebel" undermines the stuff he does.
All of this is literally baked into their first interaction, as mentioned before. Xander seems to project heavily on Min upon first meeting her, assuming that she probably has no hobbies or friends if she's the Ultimate Student and judging her for it quickly. Min isn't particularly thrilled over that, given he knows nothing about her life.
Speaking of backstories, there's other points in those where they contrast. Particularly, the involvement of large companies and rich people in said backstories. Duke Spurling did a thing that killed Xander's entire family, which was the inciting incident for Xander officially leaving behind his studious nature. Meanwhile, XF-Ture Tech helped Min's family out of property, but pushed Min into studiousness for the Ultimate Student title; more or less the opposite of what Spurling did for Xander.
The same can be said of their relationship with Hope's Peak, which is elaborated on in the Bonus Episodes. Xander went to Hope's Peak for some kind of ulterior motive-
Unnamed Classmate [BE2]: I think your ability to get back from adversity is really admirable. That determination of yours is admirable. If you set out to do something, then never give up on that, no matter what obstacles may stand in your way. Even if it's risky or against the rules, as long as it's for a good cause... I'll trust that you know to do the right thing. Xander: Yeah, of course. That's why I've come to Hope's Peak, isn't it?
-which we can somewhat confidently assume to be bad for the school given Xander's... Everything. For Min's side, just getting to Hope's Peak was Min's entire goal for the entirety of her childhood, playing right into the hands of the Ultimate Contest for Eminent Students, and thus into the school's hands.
By the way, if you go back and look at what Absolutely-Not-Mai says to Xander, the idea of "bouncing back from adversity" could be connected to Min's whole "mistakes are to be corrected" thing. This one's an insane stretch, though.
For another point, though I don't know much about this particular topic, I find even their designs are opposites in some ways. Although arguably that's more a result of them being foils in general and DRDT having good character design but y'know.
Both of them seem to wear some kind of school uniform, but in totally different ways. Xander does everything he can to stylize his, be it wearing his coat as a cape, or getting a tongue piercing specifically because they weren't allowed and he could hide it, as stated in a Q&A, doing everything he can to fight against this institution. On the other hand, Min wears hers normally, and several Q&A answers clarify that she finds comfort in the colors and style of her uniform. One fights against institutions, the other works withing their systems (Min even wants to be a teacher which is an extension of that idea), you get the point.
Also this plays into the theme of fate because of course it does. Just replace "institutions" with "fate" and you kinda get the point. Xander fights against it, Min accepts it. Or, she accepts the fate of being the Ultimate Student, at least.
Their relationships with other characters, Teruko and David in particular, is another point of foiling. I've brought this up before, but as a recap: Xander betrayed Teruko so she openly hates him even though her real feelings are much more complicated than that, while Min tried to save her only to then panic and try to win the class trial, which causes Teruko to openly hate her even though her real feelings are much more complicated than that. But Teruko takes on Min's philosophy of fixing mistakes in the second trial, which is notable because in the same trial, David calls Min pathetic before his magical girl transformation, only to reveal that he's following Xander's ideals a while later. And while Teruko and David may not be recap foils, they sure are foils in general, so the foiling Xanvid and Terumin duos are formed. Cool!
As a minor point also connected to relationships, I could see the angle that Xander's friendship with David might parallel Min's thoughts on Mai. This one's iffier because anything about Mai is iffy, but I think it's worth mentioning.
The starting point of the Xanvid thing is the fact that they both used to idolize each other, but eventually decide that they should just be friends like any other friends. Cue the whole "foxes and children" quote from The Little Prince that shows up in LGI in the "I hate the things I love..." scene- I don't know how many people can follow what I just said, but I hope the main idea got across, at least.
Xander [1-5]: Enough with these idols or role models, okay? Let's just be friends.
In the same way, everyone loves Mai, but Min's Mai quote is:
Min: An average girl with nothing special at all about her.
Which can kinda be said about Min too, but the whole point of the end of the Bonus Episode is how Min is special to Mai.
Think of David as Mai and Xander as Min. David and Mai are idolized by everyone who knows them (pre 2-11 anyways), but Xander and Min see them as regular people (post 1-5 for Xander), while Xander and Min aren't idolized (by most of the cast at least) but are special to David and Mai respectively. I don't really know if it works perfectly, but it's close enough for me to mention.
You can even try to fit in some kind of point about the theme of cooperation vs competition, though I'll admit it's a bit of a stretch.
Competition is greatly important for Min's character, but she doesn't often go out of her way to help others. She helps when asked, sure, as she does when Surely-Not-Mai asks her to help her study in BE1, or when Eden asks for help baking and the subsequent clean-up. However, there's several scenes where she avoids conflict by reading that anatomy textbook of hers, such as in her introduction and when Arei's yelling at the Baking Squad.
Meanwhile, Xander doesn't really compete on anything with anyone aside the arm wrestling contest (which isn't much of a competition anyways), but he constantly tries to butt into other people's issues. It happens in Min's introduction, in his chat with Nico in 1-5, right before stabbing Teruko, you get the idea. So, he constantly tries to cooperate even without the consent of the person they're trying to cooperate with. Again, a stretch, but kinda works.
All of these foils culminate in Xander's death and Min's murder. Xander, like always, is proactive and acts even with incomplete information:
Xander [1-5]: Then, why did I do this? I don't even know... Why? Just why did you ask me to kill Teruko?
Trying his best to cooperate with an unknown ally to, presumably, hinder the mastermind's plans; fighting against the killing game like he fights against any other system.
But then Min barges in. She was just trying to fix the mistakes of the past, aka cleaning up the remnants of the baking thing. But just like her being randomly sponsored by XF-Ture Tech was in some ways both a blessing and a curse, she once again finds herself in a situation where, depending on how you look at it, she's either in the right place at the right time (to save Teruko) or at the wrong place at the wrong time (because she'll end up dying from this).
Xander attacks, and there's a bit of brain vs brawn thing that happens. I hadn't mentioned that theme before because Xander is intelligent and Min is arguably not the smartest in the cast, but it's true that Xander's physical prowess and Min's intelligence are some of their most notable strengths. This is brought to the forefront when Xander tries to kill Min by overpowering her only for her to outsmart him with the light switch trick.
However, again similarly to how she was pushed into a corner by the XF-Ture Tech contract, Min now finds herself in a position where she must compete with others for her own survival. And not just any form of competition, but a class trial. Once again, Min has to compete under the rules established by an institution, as she did in the UCES. She ultimately gets executed, but kept trying to survive until the very end, fighting for her life the same way she'd been fighting for her future her entire childhood; by trying to give the right answers in a test.
Look, there's probably more foils (because each time I look at these two I find more of them), but I need to stop at some point. These are characters who foil even in their fucking custom weapons for God's sake. Xander's "gun" looks extremely dangerous, when in reality it's nothing but a piece of plastic; and Min's pen looks totally safe, while actually hiding a knife. If I keep looking, I'll keep finding, and I have to talk about 7 other foiling pairs, so I'll keep it at that for this post :v
2) Teruko & Charles
There's plenty to talk about with these two as well! The main point of foiling is their respective character arcs so far.
Charles started out as a prickly and judgemental guy, pushing the others away as he felt superior due to his talent. However, after the events of the first trial, he started opening up a bit more, and hanging out with the others, mainly Whit.
Teruko, for her part, started out friendlier. She made a quick connection with Xander, and we saw her socializing with the elevator scene with Ace and Levi, and the baking squad scene. However, she went the other way after the first trial, pushing the others away to avoid getting attached and trusting no one. She's swinging back to trusting now, but the point stands.
Basically, Teruko and Charles went in opposite character arcs in the first two chapters. In that sense, Charles exists as an early warning to Teruko about the dangers of pushing others away, as the only reason Charles managed to get through the first trial is because Whit trusted him and his hemophobia. So, trust, relying on others, important themes their stories share.
And it's not just the in-killing game arcs, as their backstories also vaguely foil. Charles had a pretty privileged upbringing, while Teruko obviously had a lot more issues with her luck and all. Funnily enough, this includes them having scars they don't properly remember getting. Charles believes the dog bite wound on his arm is a birthmark, while Teruko doesn't know where the scar on her back came from.
Which is what gets us to the theme of memory we got going on. Both of them have memory issues, albeit different ones: Charles has childhood amnesia, Teruko has prosopagnosia. They even both have a brother of indeterminate fate, what with us not really knowing what happened to either "Kyo" or Elliot. Well we know Elliot's dead at least but you get the idea.
Speaking of the Elliot situation, one can tie this pair to a theme I can best define as "challenged preconceptions." Basically the idea that there's preconceptions these two carried into the killing game which are challenged by the events within it. That can technically be said about a lot of characters, sure, but Charles and Teruko have a fair amount of very specific notions which are only begin doubting in the killing game.
For Charles, this would be the existence of Elliot; that's the point I was trying to make with that segue back there. Charles thought he was an only child, but turns out he had a brother at some point.
Charles [2-7]: From birth all the way to the present, there are probably many things that you had taken for granted to be true. Things you never thought to question before, like those frivolous lies about "Santa Claus" or the "Tooth Fairy." Or perhaps less frivolous lies, like the idea that your parents know what's best for you. Once you're given some hitherto unknown information, you may begin piecing together a bigger picture of your past. Things you had accepted as truth your whole life begin to reveal themselves as lies. And once all the pieces are in place, you realize you were blind for never seeing the whole story before.
It's what Charles' numeral in LGI references: "if you doubt, brittle things are broken."
For Teruko, there's a few preconceptions that get challenged over the course of the killing game, but probably the most notable one is the idea that she's doomed to live a horrible life due to her luck.
Teruko [2-16]: I have always said that my misfortune, my personality, the choices I make, everything was all a product of a bad luck that I can't control. That I grew up in such horrible circumstances, so I was destined to grow up to be a terrible person. That everyone else abandoned me, so it's not my fault that I'm alone. I want to say that it's fate's fault, and that I had no choice in the matter. But, even so... Even so... Everyone. Xander, Min, Arei, Ace. Maybe even Levi. Is it my fault that they died? [...] Whether it was the fault of fate, or my fault... I already knew the answer. I had known what the answer was since a long, long time ago.
I think you can kinda see the point.
Their aptitude in class trials can also be mentioned. Although Charles was sorta out of it during the first one, he was definitely pretty good in the second one. And Teruko is far and away the most influential character in trial discussion overall. The fact they're equally matched intellectually speaking helps them play off each other pretty nicely.
Like with Xander and Min, there's probably more to talk about, but that's enough for me in this case.
3) Eden & Arei
The girlies! Arei's playground breakdown very neatly captures a lot of the themes these two foil on. Mainly, the theme of kindness and being a "good person." Arei used to try and be kind, but she was hurt because of it and thus decided to fight back against her sisters through becoming mean. Eden, meanwhile, remains kind and compassionate even through the despair of the killing game. This also plays into the idea of strength; while Arei is physically stronger and more forceful when it comes to getting what she wants, Eden is stronger in her resilience, her ability to remain Silly despite the horrors. Both have their merits, as we see for example when Arei defends Eden from Arturo and when Eden manages to move Teruko in the 2-3 kitchen scene, respectively.
Meanwhile, when we speak of being a "good person", Arei's breakdown of what that means in 2-13 is really all we need to talk about. Eden's seemingly unending patience and kindness is not what's truly needed to be a "good person", as even she must have made mistakes and hurt people in the past (cue fork CG). Rather, being a "good person" just means trying to change for the better whenever you mess up, represented by Arei. Not to say Eden's not a good person; she is, but you don't need to be like her to be "good"- you get the point.
In the same ballpark, we have the theme of friendship, what it means to be friends. In fact, Arei's little 2-10 reconciliation speech connects both this theme and the last.
Arei [2-10]: Being a good person means doing nice things. So if there's anything you need from me... Whether it's defending you from scary jerks like Arturo or baking some stupid fucking cake... I'll do it. I promise. I'll do anything for you. Okay? Eden: I... Arei: Because... because... Because that's what friends do.
Arei believes friendship to be all about doing things for the other person, protecting each other. This is pretty central to her character, seeing as "Because that's what friends do" is her secret quote. Eden brings up the same thing when acused of murder.
Eden [2-14]: I just wanted to help Arei.... I didn't kill her... Teruko: You know I can't just take your words at face value, Eden. Eden: Please, Teruko... You're my friend, aren't you? Friends help each other.... So please, help me...
So. That.
One could also connect Eden's theming around new beginnings (birthday right before New Year's, favorite color is daffodil yellow and daffodils represent new beginnings, her name references the Garden of Eden which comes from a story about the beginning of the world) to Arei's redemption arc, as Arei gets a "new beginning" in the kindness she once showed. This even ties into Arei's death thematically, as Arei not only dies trying to be a good friend to Eden (tying into the theme of friendship), but she specifically dies in the playground, a place connected to childhood. So we once again get "new beginnings" by connecting her place of death to her origin point and the time when she was kind, if you get the idea.
Again, probably more here, and for this one in particular I'm not even sure I really scratched the surface, but I'll call this good enough for now.
4) Nico & Ace
So these two have a ridiculous amount of beef and that's not really new. Even their very talents have foils; both work with animals, but Nico loves all animals, while Ace hates them, especially horses.
Ace [1-5]: Animals are fucking lame, anyways. Seriously, they suck hard. If someone told me their cat was acting up or something, I’d give it a good punt.
But the main point of contrast is the theme of agency and taking control of their situation.
Ace’s thoughts on this are expressed quite clearly in his secret quote, “I don’t know what to do with myself anymore.” He feels he lacks control over his talent (forced into it despite being deathly afraid of horses), over his feelings (obvious), over his relationships with the cast, etc. And so he tries to feel in control by bullying Nico, especially when he gets their secret so he can try to blackmail them. Not that Ace doesn’t bother Nico before that, but it does get worse in CH2. He repeatedly does self-destructive things just so he can feel in control of something, be it killing Arei because he feels everyone hates him and he has no way of fixing that before he dies, or trying to find reasons to get mad at Levi so he can try to control his feelings towards him when they become inconvenient for the whole murder thing.
Nico, for their side, keeps having their agency undermined by people around them. They get pushed by both David and Ace into revealing their secret before they were ready, Hu keeps defending them even after they ask her not to, they keep getting spoken over during the trial, etc. You can even extend that to stuff like feeling like they have to present as a man at the start of the series because the people from their backstory don’t respect their identity, or more minor events in the killing game like Ace reproaching them for just… wandering around.
Nico [1-8]: The motive was on my mind. So I was nervous. I tend to pace around when I’m nervous. That’s not a problem, right? Ace: Seriously? You were ‘wandering around’ all alone? You’re definitely the killer!
Basically, Nico struggles to assert themselves a lot of the time, which means they end up going from 0 to 100 pretty fast on the whole “murder Ace” plan.
That’s how we get to the theme of victims/perpetrators, or rather, how sometimes things are more complicated than that dichotomy. The theme is explored throughout their relationship, with Nico originally being a victim of Ace's bullying, then Ace being a victim of Nico's attempted murder, then Ace being a perpetrator of actual murder, you get the idea. Pretty straightforward there.
Going further, this also connects to the theme of forgiveness and apologizing, which comes up a few times in the trial. Nico doesn’t apologize to Ace after explaining their plan because they still hate him and know Ace isn’t going to forgive them, so they see no point in doing it. This parallels how Ace doesn’t expect anyone to forgive him for killing Arei, though with Nico, the question of forgiveness is currently open-ended, as there’s several characters who either have shown a willingness to ignore their crimes (Hu) or don’t know what to think of them (Rose). Basically, Nico has a chance to move past their mistake, which Ace isn’t getting.
And as usual, Ace’s death is the culmination of the themes his character embodies. He kills Arei, who is connected to him via the theme of bullying. He does it out of fear of death, because he feels he doesn't have enough control over his life to avoid getting killed by the enemies he made by insulting them all. Arei was on the path of forgiveness with Eden, which Ace cut short. Ace replicates what Nico did to him because Ace’s murder is the conclusion to everything that’s happened to him in the killing game, with everyone hating him and all that. You get the point. Hopefully.
For a relatively smaller theme, we can bring up dissatisfaction with their body. Nico is non-binary, meaning they’re presumably not very happy with the sex they were born with. Meanwhile, Ace has an eating disorder, not to mention that he always wears gloves for some reason (hiding his hands), and he wears heels to be taller because he’s shorter than he’d like, even though he’s also tall for a jockey. Can’t win, this guy.
Again, probably more to talk about, but I’d like to get this post out at some point this year :v
5) Hu & Veronika
You mention in this ask that, since the first two recap foil pairs were important for CH1 and the third and fourth were important for CH2, it's possible that Hu-Vero and Rose-J could be important for CH3. That's certainly an interesting observation! We could also extend that to CH4, I guess, but that's a bit too far for me to talk about... so I won't! I will talk about CH3, though.
I'll get to Rose-J in their section, but I could definitely believe that Hu-Vero could be important for CH3. There's a fair bit of setup for both of them going through some kind of arc in the chapter, which you kinda mentioned in the ask (Hu has to deal with the fallout of the Nico situation, while Vero's reactions to Levi's near death and Ace's execution imply she's getting worse), and there's already a narrative connection between them through their pact about the secrets in the second trial. Not to mention that Vero's always given people CH3 death vibes, which I get even if I'm hesitant to say that myself.
But that's just speculation. What about the foils we already have? Well, the main point of contrast is their reaction to conflict, especially when it comes to a specific person they're particularly interested in. Hu always tries to mediate conflict and defend the people she considers good, mostly seen in her white knighting of Nico all throughout CH2. Veronika's the opposite. She enjoys watching conflict, stirring the pot with her psychoanalysis, and particularly enjoys whenever Arturo does some bullshit. Basically, Hu goes "I can fix them" while Vero goes "I can make him worse." Classic dichotomy there.
Then there's the matter of change, metamorphosis even. Hu’s character is designed around it, with her butterfly hairpin and the fact her name means “still lake”, as water is often connected to rebirth. And we know she has changed, from the hopeless child who attempted suicide three times into someone who seems quite attached to her life, if her secret quote is anything to go by.
Hu [Profile Source Code]: I want to pay for what I’ve done. But even then, I still want to live.
Much in the same way, we know Veronika in present is not the same person she used to be years ago. She mentions having been quite outdoors-y back in the day, some of that bleeding into her excitement about the playground, and of course her motive secret is that she used to self-harm, but no longer does.
And yes, the theme of self-harm/suicide is another one where these two foil, which has even come up with their motive secret pact in CH2. We don’t have many details on that yet, though.
That said, the reasons for why they harmed themselves seem to be quite different, which is noteworthy. Although we don’t know what exactly led Hu to attempt suicide, we do know that nowadays she desperately wants to be relied on so she feels useful, meaning it’s very likely her suicidal tendencies came from a feeling that her life had no meaning, or something equally depressing. Meanwhile, provided her secret is to be believed, Veronika just hurt herself when she was bored. Definitely very different reasons for self-harm there.
Looking over your original post on this (have I mentioned I’ve been cross-checking my own thoughts with your own? ‘Cuz I’m doing that), you also bring up maturity, which is indeed an aspect in which they foil. Hu’s character profile states she acts motherly, and the highlighted word in her subtitle quote (“Can you please try and act with a little more maturity?”) is, in fact, maturity. Meanwhile, Vero has childish tendencies, most evidently seen in the scene where the playground gets introduced.
There’s definitely a lot of things about these characters which we currently don’t know about, so I’m sure this section could get significantly larger in the future. But for now, this feels decent enough for me.
6) Rose & J
According to the extension of the original theory stated in this ask, J-Rose might be an important pair for CH3. And I can definitely see that! Rose's mental state has deteriorated a lot, so CH3 is primed to be a turning point for her character. Your point about Arturo being important at the start due to Levi's condition, and that possibly leading to attention being drawn to J, is also very reasonable. Not to mention that, as you seem to be aware of given what you said in the ask, DRDT's motives have so far aligned pretty well with the THH motives, with the first one being videos of their family and the second being secrets. This is important because, if that pattern continues, the third motive might be related to money. And one of the themes in which these two foil is wealth and poverty, which we'll get to in a moment, so it's entirely possible this pair could be quite relevant as a result of that. Not a bad idea in the slightest.
In any case, this is another set that mainly foils through backstory, at least for now. Rose was born into poverty, J was born into wealth. Rose tried to do everything she could for her family, J tries to distance herself from her mother as much as she can. Some parallels can be drawn between the influence the Spurling Foundation has on Rose’s life and the things Mariabella tries to force J to do. I can’t recall if this actually got mentioned in the series itself yet, but based on the childhood drawings post, we can tell J was probably forced to wear dresses despite disliking “girly” things per her profile, and from there infer that she was likely forced into doing a lot of things she didn't want to do.
These backstories can additionally connect to the ever prevalent theme of fate. Rose has accepted her fate, in a sense, believing that she’ll never escape her contract with the Spurling Foundation (see: her secret quote, “In the end, the only thing I can do is watch my wretched life go on”). On the other hand, J constantly rejects her fate by going against her birthright and hiding that she’s a Rosales (see: her secret quote, “Please don’t call me your daughter ever again”).
This is literally baked into their designs btw. Rose’s apron is stained all over, as if to signal she’s stained by the mistakes of her past, while J wears a hoodie as if to hide her identity as much as possible. Notably, J’s shirt actually has a paint splatter design, so she literally is hiding the stains (which in her case would be her last name) that Rose doesn’t bother covering up.
(Btw while I was looking at their designs for this I noticed J’s hoodie has two zippers, which threw me off a lot lmao. Apparently those are a real thing, but it still caught me off guard and I wanted to mention it lol)
On the topic of design, why do they wear the same shoes?
(Rose's on the left, J's on the right)
Like, Rose’s are a bit less saturated and maybe a bit more green than blue, but that’s the only difference I can see. I don’t think there’s any other pair of pairs of shoes that look this similar in the cast. Whit and Arei’s are similar to these, but they have a few different details. I don’t even think this is a foil thing I think Rose and J just have very similar taste in shoes. I find this amusing.
Anyways. Their talents are artistic.
…Yep, that’s the parallel! Admittedly, it does come up a bit, with J saying the decor looks new during the prologue, and Rose saying she could figure out a few things about the building if she could analyze the paint on the wall. They be detective-ing and stuff.
Arguably, the theme of betrayal can also be brought up, though it’s very minor. Rose got betrayed by Nico, who used her turpentine for their attempt on Ace. And something like that kinda happened to J around the same time, as she dragged Teruko into a dressing room to avoid Arturo and got a knife to her throat for the troubles. It barely counts, but given Teruko is one of the only people J seemed to genuinely like before that point, I’d say the situations are similar enough to mention, if nothing else.
Leaving it off there!
7) Arturo & Levi
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. Their talents are aesthetic related, be it related to people’s physical appearance or the clothes they wear. These talents connect to some of the other themes of their characters, such as Arturo’s obsession with beauty and Levi “styling himself” as a good person by doing things good people do, if that makes sense.
Then there’s the other big one; their family situation. Arturo’s home life was likely pretty bad, which we can infer from how desperate he seemed to get the hell outta dodge; and his sister committed suicide because Arturo left. Levi also left his family behind, although in his case he says everyone was a “bad influence” on everyone. Plus, he directly killed his father for one reason or another. We did get to see how Arturo felt about Levi’s nonchalance about the death of his father in the second trial, and that furthers their foiling.
Arturo [2-13]: How could you simply *forget* that you murdered your own family member?
Yeah that.
Going back to the talents, there’s some contrast between how they got them. Arturo studied from a very young age and for years to become a Plastic Surgeon just as he entered adulthood, while Levi admits to being relatively new to fashion. They both kinda use their talents to escape their past in some way (it was part of Arturo’s plan to get the hell away from his home and Hope’s Peak is the reason Levi was never convicted for his murders), just that one had a little more planning behind it.
Then there’s the matter of protection. Arturo repeatedly resents the idea that because he has some medical training, he has to be the cast’s doctor every time someone gets injured, and panics when he’s asked to do something as serious as saving Levi’s life.
Arturo [2-16]: I–! I’m not that kind of surgeon! I’ve told you, over and over, I have no experience with saving lives!
Levi, conversely, actively wishes to protect the others, seen for example when he attacked MonoTV in the Prologue and when he jumped in front of Teruko right before she got shot at. It’s even clarified in the subtitle quote of his profile (“I will do my utmost best to make sure that you all are safe”). Levi likes to protect others so they see him as a “good person”, which segues nicely into a more vague theme of categorizing important people in some way. Levi wishes to be seen as a good person and thus is quite interested in those he considers good (eg Eden), while Arturo is only interested in talking to beautiful people. It’s very vague and I don’t have much to say about it, especially since we don’t know exactly where Arturo’s obsession with beauty comes from, but it’s there.
Speaking of that, another point of comparison is the way both of them seek the approval of one specific person in the cast. For Arturo, it’s J because of her mother. For Levi, it’s Ace because of what happened in the first trial. They do it in quite different ways, but it is a thing that happens, and the differences help highlight the main narrative points these plot points bring to the table.
I’m calling that good enough!
8) Whit & David
We sure left a pretty interesting one for last. This is probably one of the ones I’m the least clear on, mostly because both Whit and David are sorta unclear characters. However, there are still a few interesting things I can bring up.
Let’s start with the theme of idolization of the dead, because it’s quite literally what Whit’s secret quote references.
Whit [Profile Source Code]: We tend to idolize the dead.
Whit idolizes his mother, and thus tries to be like her in any way he can. He dyes his hair blond, he completely ignores the fact she’s dead, you know the drill. Meanwhile, David idolizes Xander. Take a pick from any of his 2-12 lines or any of the Xander related LGI bullshit to see what I mean by that.
Though, speaking of family members, Diana Chiem. Given we have no idea what the deal with her is yet, I won’t speak too much on it. But if you’ve watched my Vivisection of the David MV, you might know that there’s a theory brought up there that Diana may have died during Hope’s Peak time and that David’s started saying she never existed when that happened. The link sends you to that section of the video. It’s kinda insane, but there’s some basis for it, and it would create a pretty clear connection between Diana and Elizabeth (Whit’s mom) so I’m bringing it up.
Then there’s the theme of hiding/avoiding sad topics and the like. David is obviously not as happy with his life as he presents himself as, at least for most of the story, while Whit has a history of horrendously avoidant behavior when it comes to anything that’s even remotely negative.
David does occasionally talk about heavier topics, but always behind some kind of persona. Either as the inspirational speaker who takes on a leadership role in CH2 (see: revealing his family history of depression (which I think is true, even if he probably never thought that was actually his secret), comforting Arei in the playground) or as the cartoonishly evil person he pretends to be immediately after his magical girl transformation (see: “Arei was a weather spell” line). He’s seemingly a bit more candid when it comes to Xander in 2-12 for a bit, but then he mostly reverts back to just being an asshole most of the time, other than a few outbursts of genuine emotion (funnily enough, one of them being David shouting at Whit to take things seriously). Meanwhile, Whit (in my opinion) doesn’t seem to have a persona, per say; he’s just kind of an unserious person who repeatedly uses humor and other tactics to distract from the Horrors. He’s a deeply strange person, but that’s kinda just who he is.
Then there’s- say it with me everyone- the theme of fate. David believes people can’t change, that they’re fated to remain the same no matter what happens during their life. He’s made that stance relatively clear. Whit, for his part, has a much more optimistic view on humanity and the like, as he tells Teruko.
Whit [2-3]: Charles… No, everyone here… we might act callously, but we’re all only human. We're all real people with our strengths and weaknesses. You included, Teruko. Just like Charles, even if you’re acting cold, there’s still a part of you that’s good–
(And yes, “we’re all only human” can be contrasted with the whole “David doesn’t really feel human” thing from LGI and Tally 5)
Thus, his connection to fate is actually something that hasn’t been talked about in the main series yet, but rather comes from his character profile. All it takes is noticing the repeated references to luck and thing that are “guaranteed” (aka fated) to happen, and you can kinda piece it together from there.
Whit [Profile]: It’s said that if you get the Ultimate Matchmaker to find you a romantic partner, you’re guaranteed to have a happy and stable relationship for life. Unfortunately for Whit Young, he seems to lack all luck when it comes to finding a relationship himself.
And since that profile talks about his talent, I'll use it as a segue to look at similarities between Matchmaker and Inspirational Speaker. Both are talents based around influencing and advising people on how to achieve happiness, either in their love life or their… life life. Thus, both require some level of understanding on how people think and act, which manifests in Whit’s self-proclaimed intuitive nature and David’s confidence in his beliefs when it comes to people not changing and all that.
And… yeah I’m gonna say I’m okay with that for now.
-
Wow, that was quite a bit, now wasn’t it! And it still feels like I could find more if I thought about it long enough, but I hope this was enough for you. Thanks for the ask! The DRDT cast is really fun to talk about, though, so the excuse to do so is always welcome :D

Any Tmnt Iteration x Spider-Man!Reader: First meeting
Part 2
You hold the proud title of New York one and only superhero. It's probably been months since that weird spider bite you, and that incident with your uncle's demise probably let you scarred for life, but that's not what we're gonna talk today! Can we please let your dead uncle out of this? Yeah? Thank you!
You've done a lot of things for this city, seriously, from a crazy guy with robotic wings to an electricist that controls electricity. Pretty ironic doesn't? Of course, no version of Spider-Man could be Spiderman if the media didn't drag your reputation through the mud. You can thank that to your boss, Burne Thompson. You almost regret coming to him when selling pictures of yourself, but you were desperate. If it helps your aunt to get to the end of the month, you could take a little of public humiliation. At least one of your coworkers, April O'Neil, is nice enough and always talks good from your alter ego when she's on the scene. In fact, the number of times you've rescued her is enough to tag her of your Lois Lane or your Vicky Vale. She's pretty, but you're not interested!
It was just another normal night, doing your spider things and taking yourself selfies, until your Spidey Sense started buzzing and telling you danger approaches. You keep your camera in their place with one of your webs before waiting for action.
You didn't expect to find an oversized turtle in a skateboard just goofing around. Okay, it's New York, weird shit happens all the time. The Turtle had an orange bandana and a pair of nunchakus on their belt. Oh! And they're naked! Well, turtles didn't have the same genitalia mammals had. In none of your Animal Planet you never saw a crocodile's junk— No Spidey! Bad Spidey! Your Spidey Sense never gets wrong! And if your Spider sense says this Turtle is dangerous, then some truth must be!
"That's some pair of good tricks over there" - you say casually as the Turtle frozes and start looking around - "Up here buddy, on the side of the building."
The Turtle's eyes are surprisingly... Human. Of a pretty baby blue color. Squared head and two holes instead of a nose. You think you could actually freak out if there was an actual human nose there.
"Holy sh—!" - comes out a very human and childish voice. He sounds pretty much like someone your age should sound - "[S/n]! I'm sorry! I promise I didn't do anything illegal! Just don't take me to jail!" - he frenetically screams
"Woah woah, easy buddy " - you put your hands in the air as a sign peace - "I'm not going to do anything as long you didn't do anything, okay? You just don't see a giant turtle every night! A giant lizard? Maybe. I was just curious. You don't plan to do anything in this neighborhood?" - you do you best to out your vest Batman voice
"No Sir/Ma'am No!" - The Turtle stand up straight
"No taking over the city plans I should worry about?" - you ask again
"I promise! I'm a good guy!"
"Very well" - you stayed silent for a couple of seconds before changing the mood - "I believe you!"
The Turtle stays still before looking at you - "You do?"
"Yes"
"You're not gonna run screaming or anything?" - ask the Turtle
"My dude, or dudette or non binary buddy, is that's your wave. This is New York. If you can't stand a pair of wierd shit like giant animals then you're a pussy and you should move out because you're not a yanqui if you're not used to"
"Oooohhh" - the Turtle seems to realize - "Thanks... That's... That was nice, you're the first person that doesn't run away screaming"
"And you're the first person, excuse me, reptile that doesn't try to kill me on the spot. I should be thanking you" - you said as you decide this little fella over there is going to become your favorite person in New York at this point as you jump and land next to him... Her.. They? - "Do you have any name I can call you?"
"Sure! Name's Michelangelo! But my brother's call me Mikey!" - answers the Turtle
"As the artist? You know? The one with the naked statues?"
"Exactly!" - Mikey says before laughing - "Oh, I'm so gonna use that with my brothers!"
Curiosity spikes you. He already mentioned his brothers twice. As much as you like to ask if they're turtles as well you decide to keep your questions for yourself. You don't know how he ended up as a giant turtle, but the world weren't as gentle with the ones that were different.
"Really, wait to you hear this one—" - you were about to drop some lame joke before you could heard police sirens on the distance - "Shoot. Duty calls" - You turn to look at Michelangelo - "Sorry, but I gotta go"
"Sure! Go kick some bad guys ass!" - cheered Michelangelo - "I can't wait to rub I meet [S/n] on Donnie's face!"
"Oh really?" - you rise an eyebrow behind your mask - "Can you tell me tomorrow how it go?"
"Really dude/dudette?" - asked Michelangelo, you could see the starry look in his eyes
"Yeah! Same hour, same place!" - you say as you prepare to swing away - "And don't talk to stangers in alleys!"
"I Won't!" - you heard him answer as you swing away
New York. The city a Turtle and a Spider could get along...

Preventing Activist Burnout
One thing about me is that I was really into activism as a teenager until I got burnt out as a result of how I was doing it and couldn't engage in politics at all without having a panic attack. It's only been in these past 3 months that I've been able to get into it again, and this time I'm not gonna let burnout happen. Here's how to do it:
1. Pick a struggle
OK, so the title of this section is a little tongue-in-cheek, but seriously, you can't do it all. What you can do, though, is choose what's most productive, and do that. For me, the focus is on making sure nobody in my local area goes hungry, and national disability rights when I have the energy.
Let's say that there's only one can of water, but you have 50 plants. If you try and water them all, some will get left out, you'll have no water left for yourself, and they'll all die because you're not giving them water consistently. If you pick one or two plants to water, they'll stay alive, which is one or two more than if you tried the first one. The beauty of activism is that you're not alone; you watering just those couple of plants means that other people can focus on the other plants, and every plant can survive.
2. Turn off the news
You will not find anything of value there. Humans were not made to be bombarded with all the most awful information, unable to do anything about most of it. You will break down if you do this. If something's that big of a deal, your comrades will be talking about it. Staying the bare minimum of informed about anything that isn't your focus is possible through osmosis.
3. Graphic imagery
I have seen people brag about having nightmares because of what they expose themselves to in the name of activism. Let me make one thing clear: watching people dying all the time is not activism; it's torture porn. You are not heroically withstanding the evils of this world, you're just sensitising yourself more and more to violence.
Furthermore, you're linking activism with the feeling you get from watching those videos, putting yourself into fight/flight/freeze mode. If you go into flight or freeze, you won't be helping because the topic will cause avoidance. If you go into fight, you're acting impulsively and out of fear, and might not make the choices that would be most effective or beneficial. Just don't do it, you're not helping the cause or yourself.
4. Boundaries
Treat activism like a job. Have a second account where you post and consume activist stuff, so your dashboard or FYP or whatever isn't literally always telling you the worst things. Set aside particular times of the day or week to participate in your activism, and don't engage outside of those times. This isn't letting anyone down - it's preventing burnout, which means you can keep fighting.
This goes with IRL stuff too; make sure your friendship group isn't literally always talking politics. Sometimes you need to unwind and talk about music or games or something. It's perfectly fine to not engage in a conversation if it's starting to make you uneasy. It's never your responsibility to feel upset on someone else's behalf.
---
And that's all I have. I hope you can keep fighting the good fight, and I hope for a better world for us all. <3

pairing : knight!ichigo kurosaki x princess!reader
summary : ichigo has no choice but to take you away. after all, it is his duty to protect you, no matter the cost. and now, ichigo has to make sure the love of his life is not found.
word count : 1.2k
warnings : swearing, abusive family, me not knowing how to cook in medieval times
note : this isn't gonna be completely accurate to medieval times, but just go with the flow okay?
༶┈⋇⊶⊰✿⊱⊷⋇┈⋇⊶⊰✿⊱⊷⋇┈୨♡୧┈⋇⊶⊰✿⊱⊷⋇┈⋇⊶⊰✿⊱⊷⋇┈༶
saying a goodbye to renji, ichigo continued leaning against the doorframe to watch you. you had taken a blanket and a book, and set up a little area for you to read while he talked with renji inside.
this was no ordinary situation you found yourselves in. you were a princess, and he was your knight. however, those titles were a thing of the past.
about half a year ago, you'd had to escape from your life as royalty. your father was not a good man. he was abusive and was going to force you to marry an old duke in the name of 'forming an alliance'. when your father announced his intentions of marrying you off, you had immediately begged him to reconsider. he would hear none of it and afterwards, you bore a black eye in consequence.
before that instance, you thought you had been doing an excellent job at keeping your father's violence towards you a secret from ichigo. but, he was your knight and of course had known for a long time, however, both your lives were threatened by your father in order to keep him in line and to keep him silent.
when ichigo had realized there was no changing your father's mind and that this would only be the continuation of an awful life for you, he planned for you both to run away.
the night ichigo snuck you out of the castle was also the same night he confessed his feelings for you. he hated the thought of what your father was trying to force you into and couldn't bear the thought of you married to someone else. but he knew that no matter your feelings towards him, he would help you escape if that's what you wanted.
to his surprise, when he was done confessing, you'd practically thrown yourself into his arms and kissed him with all your might.
that same night with the help of some of your handmaidens, you and ichigo ran away. it took a week of almost non-stop travel for you to reach the village that ichigo was born and raised in.
karakura village was the perfect place to hide you in. ichigo had his friends and family here. no one here liked your father as ruler and would most rather spit in his face, and any of his officials, than talk to anyone about you, even if they knew your real identity.
the first month was hard on you. it wasn't easy running away from your home and to change lifestyles. but, you adjusted well and ichigo could tell you were happier here than in the castle.
"you're staring." ichigo heard you say. snapping out of his thoughts, he focused on you again. you had stood up, blanket and book in arm, and were now making your way towards him.
“how could i not when i have the most beautiful woman in front of me?” he questioned, a smile forming on his lips.
“how was renji?” you asked, now in front of him.
“he’s good, him and rukia are doing well as well. he wanted to tell me that rumour has it, we’ve died.” he informed you.
“my father thinks we’re dead?” you looked at him with something in your eyes, hope maybe?
“it would seem so. but it wouldn’t hurt to keep being on the lookout for anything that could put you in danger.” he replied, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. "i've asked if some of the men could keep an eye on the newcomers for anything suspicious."
“us in danger ichigo.” you said, a serious look on your face. "you know i don't like it when you try to exclude yourself from my future. you're not going to die protecting me, i won't allow it."
"well, my princess, as you wish. now, what do you say? should we go inside and make dinner? i know you're hungry."
"shut up you idiot. you're the one who's hungry."
“…why would you ever think that?”
**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*
“you really think this is a good idea?” renji asked ichigo. the two had returned to your cabin, where the rest of the now large group were spending time together while they were gone.
"i'm scared renji." ichigo confessed, taking a deep breath. "i was her knight, the one entrusted to protect the princess and i stole her away. her father was a piece of shit and i took her away. i'm scared that one day, when we've finally stopped worrying about him, that he's going to come and take her away from me."
"they announced the princess' death was a result of consumption. i don't think they suspect anything and would come for you." renji told his friend, who was looking at a dagger in his hands.
"i know. but i can't help but fear that this beautiful life we've started for ourselves is going to disappear one day." ichigo continued. "it's why i'm going to teach her to defend herself. it'll bring me peace of mind and help her become more confident in going out into town."
"it is an honourable thing to do, you know. to keep protecting and defending her. to give her the opportunity to do most things women in other regions can't do."
"thank you renji. now let's go see what the women have been up to without us." ichigo said, opening the door to your cabin.
the cabin was filled with laughter as renji and ichigo walked in. the house smelled of freshly baked bread and delicious meats that you were currently taking out of oven.
"ichigo! renji!" orihime exclaimed. "you're just in time. we just finished making dinner."
"did you find what you wanted?" uryu asked ichigo, knowing why the two went into town today.
"he did. now, what did we miss while we were gone?" renji asked, taking away the attention from the errand.
**•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚ ˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚*
"you had this made for me?" you asked, looking at the dagger ichigo held in his hands.
after everyone had left for the night, you two made your way to your shared bedroom in order to prepare for bed. you'd just sat down on the bed when ichigo had told you he wanted to talk to you.
"i did." he confirmed. he was currently kneeling in front of you as you sat on the bed. "i know your father thinks we're dead and is covering it up so we most likely don't have to worry about him anymore... but to be honest with you, i'm scared. i'm scared that one day i won't be able to protect you and i need to know that you can protect yourself."
"oh ichigo..." you said softly, placing the blade down on the nightstand and taking his face in your hands. he leaned into your touch, closing his eyes. "nothing will happen to me. but i will learn how to wield this dagger for you."
"thank you my dear." ichigo said, opening his eyes to look at you again.
"now, if you don't get in this bed and cuddle me, i will throw a royal sized tantrum ichigo!" you exclaimed, making the man laugh loudly before tackling you into the bed.

Parental Figures in Arcane, and How S2 Both Maintains and Hurts this Aspect of The Show
The kinship that Zaunite "families" feel for each other is shown countless times throughout the show. Claggor and Mylo aren't Vander's kids either, but he loves them just as much as the girls, and the Zaunites who had been imprisoned and were rescued by Jinx in S2 immediately want closeness to her. When Jinx cares for Isha they never address or label their relationship to one another, or to us. They're all on the same side, and it doesn't matter if they're related or not, or even if they're close. They're all fighting and surviving together.
Arcane also made it clear how important parental figures are, but they didn't touch on the importance of titles in that relationship between a parent and their children because that was never important. There was always something more pressing happening. Only at the very end could someone admit their love and bestow a title as sacred and important as "dad" or "daughter".
So why do Vi and Jinx both call Vander their dad so easily in S2?
In broad, broad terms, the thing I don’t like about the lack of nuance of Vander as a father figure in S2 is because of the immense nuance in S1. In S1 Vander is never referred to by Vi or Powder/Jinx as “dad.” He is a guardian, definitely, but when they’re young they’re not yet ready to accept him as a father, which is probably in part because of the nature of Zaun; when you’re all trying to survive together and everyone’s bringing whatever they can to the table (almost as equals, even if some are literally children), parental figures and titles of that sort are lost, especially in this case when Vander and the girls aren’t blood related. They may still remember their biological father (though he's never mentioned) and aren't ready to replace that person in their life. They at most see him as a close uncle or family friend of their mother. And from this point up until he dies that doesn’t change. They never call him dad in S1, and that really helped the theme of "love transcends time and class" so why does he gain this title in S2 after they haven’t seen him for 10 years(?) and thought he’d been dead this whole time. No extra bonding happened between the girls and Vander, and there was never any indication that their relationship with him, and how they felt about it had changed from a beloved father figure and guardian, to "dad".
Sure, they miss him, and you could assume that in a flurry of emotion they spring the title onto him, but complexity, detail and subtly are where the show really shines, so why did they feel the need to straight up tell us how the girls feel about Vander instead of just showing their love and affection for him?
This happens in S1, Jinx feels a deep connection with Silco, but only shows it through her actions; helping him in his mission, hugs, cradling his face when he’s dying. And he in turn only refers to her as his daughter right before he dies, yk “you’re my daughter, I’d never forsake you”, which he says in conclusion to his decision that he'd never give her up, even for the freedom of Zaun. That line finally signifies to us that she is the most important thing in Silco's life. Before this scene the audience could still be on unsure whether he'd actually be willing to give her up for his dream. She's literally his new dream. Throughout the rest of the show he shows his love through his actions; he trusts her with administering his medicine even though he's fully capable of doing it himself, but he knew she needed to feel useful (and it's really cute that after a while he's incapable of doing it himself because he's let her do it for so long), he made her a big part of his plan to free Zaun because he had faith in her abilities and knew she wanted to help, he keeps the fact that Vi is alive from her in order to protect her (don't come at me with that "manipulator Silco" talk, he also thought Vi was dead, and when he found out he didn't tell Jinx because he saw how much it hurt her to even remember Vi and think about her. He reminds her of their goal and gives to a task to help keep her mind off the hurt she's feeling). Although we as the audience are like “mk they’re clearly father and daughter” it doesn’t feel like the writers are shoving it down our throats which is why it’s really impactful when Silco finally says it in the last episode.
After Jinx picks up Isha, or after Isha inserts herself into Jinx's life, a shift between "older sister/guardian" to "parent" happens after Jinx saves Isha from Stillwater. When they hug and Isha starts crying we see on Jinx's face the realization: "oh. She's the most important thing in the world to me" but the show never has to tell us that. Isha clearly has lost a parental figure already because of her insistence on keeping her miner's hat, and Jinx also recently lost her father figure, Silco, so they both know the meaning of losing someone they love, but don't need to label themselves as "mother" and "daughter" for the audience. And it evident that Isha meant as much as she did to Jinx because of how much her death crushed what was once an outgoing and confident Jinx. Once again, they never say it, Isha never calls Jinx mom (even in her own way (you could argue that she actually does in the prison scene before Jinx is attacked by Warwick, but even if she does that's a valid place to bestow that title: her guardian is in danger and Isha can't get to her, so out of desperation she calls her "mama", but this is never mentioned again so it's just as likely that Isha was just screaming)) and she doesn't need to.
While it doesn’t ruin the dynamic between Vander and the girls in S2 and they don’t say it a ton, it makes their relationship feel less deep. Instead of them not knowing who they are to each other, or not caring because they just love each other so much, they instead bestow a title that pinpoints their degree of love for Vander. They spell it out for us, ‘he is our father, and that’s why we love him. Period’ and I think that’s harmful to how we’re supposed to view these characters. Vi and Jinx aren't ones to give out such titles easily, Vi is hesitant to admit her love for Cait, and Jinx is hesitant to call Vi her sister, and yet this man who they haven't seen for so long, who initially tried to kill them, gains this title as though he's been guiding and protecting them the whole time?
This is not Vander slander, let me assure you, I believe just as fiercely as the next person that he is their dad, that man is a father, but the fact that they casually through the title around so easily is baffling to me.
Let me just put this picture in your minds: How impactful would it have been if the first time we get a glimpse of how much they truly love each other is when Vander gets his humanity back and the first thing he says is "don't touch my daughter". Remember that scene? Imagine how much more it would've hit if the audience and the girls were still unsure of how they wanted to call Vander and how he thought of them. If they only started calling him dad after getting like, confirmation that he felt the same about them and always had. Vi and Jinx, who are terrified of being wrong, and choosing wrong, should not have given Vander the title of "dad" when he was Warwick.
This is just a little nitpick of mine, and I've never seen anyone else talk about this, but I feel like it's small details like this that made the second season more... shallow?
#arcane#arcanse season 2#vander#warwick#silco#jinx#vi#isha#seriously imagine how insane it would be if they were more careful with their dialogue in every instance in S2?#they're so careful with titles#exhibit a: partners#imagine if jayce and viktor called each other “friends” or “brothers” or “lovers”#or even “science partners”#where would be the fun in that?#that ambiguous title is everything to me#because it doesn't matter#they just care about each other so much#imagine being subtle#good father vander#good father silco#<- this is my passion btw#i will die on this hill#HE LOVED HER SO MUCH IF I HEAR ONE “but he lied to Jinx for his own gain”#LITERALLY WHERE#btw yes this is S2 slander don't get me wrong i loved it too#but also can we talk about issues we have with a show without being dogpiled by warriors who would suck the dicks of everyone involved

(Late Night) WIP Wednesday Thursday
Thank you for the tags @milla-frenchy @galway-girlatwork @joelmillerisapunk @baronessvonglitter 🥰🥰 Had an odd week and didn't write a lot, but managed to write a little of a lot of different things 🤣 (Unfortunately, no progress on the Acacius Hockey AU except for this and this).
Thank you for the kind reception on my first Dear-uary submission (What's a TomDaya?), the second entry will be for our dear Timothy Rockford and his Shutterbug, and it will be HORNEE (the epistolary form is SEXTING 🫠🤭):
Everything about the photo exudes control, skill, competency. Your mouth suddenly felt very dry even as your pussy gushed; before you could register its actions, your free hand skimmed up past the hem of Tim’s t-shirt, delicate fingers starting to rub soft circles over the front of your already drenched panties as you gawked at the very picture of dominance and prowess projecting from your phone.
I also started working on my first ever Dieter fic (eek!) for @happypedrohours' Bouquets of Pedro Creativity Challenge! The working title is "Crawling Back to You (Dieter's Version)", heavily influenced by Hozier's cover of "Do I Wanna Know"; two quick snippets:
Detox had been a fucking nightmare but Dieter likes the voices in his head now. They’re gentler with him, more forgiving, thoughtful. They sound like you.
He couldn’t even bring himself to do you the disservice of asking you to wait, or stay by his side but hidden. It was beneath you. And to ask was to break his promise.
Turns out he didn’t even need to ask for you to feel the full weight of his betrayal.
Hmmm, what else, what else? More The Rockford Portfolio, perhaps? How about some hurt/comfort?
Still, the sting of seeing you with someone else stays with him as he stumbles out of the coffeeshop, vendor's stall, grocery store and Tim tries leaning against the wall, a tree, his car to steady himself. It doesn’t help in the least. Doubling over, the pain in his chest balloons and threatens to suffocate him; deep breaths deliver no air to his lungs, the excruciating mass of regret too much in the way. He can’t breathe. He can’t breathe. He can’t.
And... some young!Frankie who's having a rough go of a friends-to-lovers fic:
As soon as he lands, Frankie turns off airplane mode and the sudden influx of cell service after six weeks has his phone practically vibrating out of his hand from all the messages and notifications he’s missed. He only cares about whether or not there are any messages from you, and when he sees that there are, he reads them in quick succession. There are only seven:
How were the pups this morning? Thanks so much again for walking Mac for me. I really needed that extra half hour of sleep 😉
How’s your day going so far? Mine is stupid busy with work, but I should be able to leave on time today!
Frankie!!! Thank you so much for the croissant! I love that bakery. And thank you for the sweet note, too
Goodnight!
Frankie? Is everything okay? I’m worried about you.
Are you going to McKibbon’s tomorrow?
You didn’t come tonight. Is it because of me?
His chest constricts at the evident change in mood and tone over the span of these messages, and especially at the sadness that radiates from the last one.
Huh. Lots of angst, eh? Yeesh - told you it's been an odd week! Ha!
No tags because I'm so late but anyone who is late like me but wants to share please dooooo 🥰🥰

Viktor observations (S1, Act 1)
I've given into the blorbo feelings and just started taking notes on all Viktor's scenes. Rambling ahead.
Viktor starting out reading Jayce’s blackboard is such a fun way to foreshadow him getting involved. “I believe someone should have said that earlier” is snarky, but “what happened here?” may well be a genuine question. He does want to know.
Viktor does not seem remotely nervous around Enforcers. He has no trouble breaking into the conversation between Jayce and Greyson, nor any issues with being here to arrest someone. He’s right in both cases, he’s not in any danger and neither is Jayce, but there’s no undercity instinct of fear or distaste.
“I’m assistant to the Dean of the Academy, who it may serve you to remember is also the Head of the Council.” Viktor throwing absolutely all of his borrowed authority into one sentence there. Jayce wanting to know who the hell he is isn’t entirely unreasonable, since as far as Jayce knows there’s a random snarky guy in academy uniform assisting with his arrest, but Viktor seems to take it as a challenge.
Viktor does seem to genuinely disapprove of Jayce at this point, which is fair since Jayce obviously thinks it’s really unfair that he’s in trouble for keeping explosives in his house.
*
I am fascinated that Viktor’s first impulse as he gets caught up in the idea of magic is to ask Heimerdinger if he could make Jayce’s theories work. It’s an interesting relationship because there’s warmth there and despite knowing Heimerdinger’s disapproval of magic, Viktor’s not worried about letting on that he’s interested (although he definitely downplays how interested) and there’s a feeling of familiarity, a sense that Viktor has brought his interests to Heimerdinger before. Heimerdinger doesn’t seem to take Viktor very seriously, but then he treats all his students like children.
Viktor’s also, sort of, under Heimerdinger’s protection. As we saw with him throwing Heimerdinger’s titles at Jayce, without a patron or a house name the fact that he works for Heimerdinger is what gives him any kind of status in Piltover.
*
Viktor’s approach to suicide prevention is really funny. He starts out being sarcastic, seems genuinely surprised when Jayce reacts badly to that, and then treats Jayce being about to jump off a building as an unfortunate obstacle to discussing his theories. I don’t think he’s intentionally being mean, but he came here prepared to have one conversation and it was not one about Jayce’s feelings. He softens up a lot at Jayce’s sincerity about how beautiful magic is and “no one believed in me” obviously strikes a chord with him.
“Poor, cripple, from the undercity” hits a lot harder in the wake of season 2. Viktor says it defiantly here, it’s what other people think of him, but it obviously has shaped a lot of how he sees himself. And notably I don’t think it’s how Jayce sees him at all - even when he didn’t like Viktor in previous scenes he was thinking he was an asshole, not any of that. I don’t think poor or from the undercity are even things Jayce could tell, and Jayce doesn’t react to Viktor needing a cane. (He’s very solicitous of Viktor in Act 2 but that seems to be a result of knowing Viktor for seven years and also Viktor’s failing health.)
“I want to help you complete your research” is also something where the specific phrasing hits now, because Viktor wanting to help is at the root of so much. I’m not sure there are any relationships Viktor forms where he’s not helping (think of “can I help?” to Singed about Rio) except maybe Heimerdinger and there he’s a literal assistant, but he is getting paid for it.There’s a mixture of ambition - as he says later, he doesn’t want to be an assistant all his life - and sincerity here. I don’t think Viktor was expecting to get anything out of helping Jayce, necessarily, but he still wanted to create magic for its own sake and for the sake of the people it could help.
“When you’re going to change the world, don’t ask for permission” is such a cool line and also probably a warning about how far Viktor is from being grounded about anything ever.
The main impression Viktor gives so far is that he’s really intense. Whether he’s intensely disapproving, intensely interested, or intensely encouraging.
*
While a great deal of tragedy has been happening to Vi’s family, our scientists have clearly been having a great time filling this blackboard.
I have questions about where Viktor is from… well, no, not where he’s from exactly, the answer is the undercity, but is he from an immigrant community? Not only does he have an accent no one else shares but his reaction to the phrase “crank it” comes off as if English (or whatever they’re speaking) might be his second language. None of our other Zaunites are remotely unfamiliar with slang.
The “crank it” exchange is so adorable, not for what they’re saying but for how they’re animated. Jayce giving Viktor a look of blatant admiration for figuring it out and Viktor’s startled little smile as he realises he and Jayce are enjoying one another’s company. They’re both lonely, Jayce gets along with people but I think he has trouble really connecting to people when so many dismiss the thing he’s built his life around as dangerous nonsense even before he nearly got banished for it. They want to be friends so badly.
The timing of Viktor pulling out the keys to Heimerdinger’s lab is amazing and hilarious.
*
The scientists are very cute, attempting a break in their academy uniforms and being bad at it. The vibe is definitely more misbehaving students than hardened criminals.
I wonder if Viktor’s blue flashlight is chemtech? It somehow looks more undercity than like anything we see in Piltover.
Viktor’s reaction to Mel is interesting. I mean, aside from “this isn’t my bedroom”, once she and Jayce start talking it’s Viktor who answers her question about why Jayce can prove it now when he couldn’t earlier with “we figured out how to stabilise it”. He’s very much not inclined to keep quiet or let Jayce handle things.
I don’t think Mel means “You’re the professor’s assistant” to be demeaning, I think she’s trying to figure out what on earth Viktor is doing here. Jayce is immediately protective though.
“Heimerdinger will recognise the potential,” Viktor says. Viktor’s going against Heimerdinger here - robbing him, in fact - but he assumes it’s something that will be all right afterwards. If he can just make Heimerdinger see then of course proof will win him over.
“Piltover, the land of progress, equality, innovation,” says Jayce, completely without irony. Which is probably part of why Viktor is looking less than happy about the way this is going.
The other part might be that Jayce and Mel have a rapport that decidedly leaves Viktor out. Mel wants to use science to put Piltover on the map, but she deals in people. Earlier she baits Jayce into revealing what he was trying to do in front of the council (and nearly gets him exiled), here Jayce tries the same thing more clumsily. First baiting her when she says Heimerdinger and the council are scared by asking if she is, and then with an appeal to emotion - and to the benefits of having Piltover be the place to develop this technology, which is decidedly the right tack to take with Mel. He probably didn’t need to convince her, and certainly can’t manipulate her, but the fact that he responds on her playing field makes him interesting to her.
Viktor does not like any of this and gives Jayce an absolutely disgusted look for being smitten with her.
The lines are already laid out. Mel wants to put Piltover on the map and make it more prosperous, Viktor wants to help the people who need it most, Jayce wants both and is not ready for the contradictions.
*
Viktor’s expression in response to “are you sure you know what you’re doing?” is so funny.
He is sure enough to tell Jayce to trust him instead of turning the machine off, though. Viktor’s really in charge of this whole venture.
They’re so smitten with the magic itself. Bright-eyed and fascinated.
Viktor using his cane to bar the door is one of those things that really highlights how much things have changed by act 2. Here he needs it sometimes, but as long as he’s in a single room he seems to be able to move around without it and plans around that.
Jayce ís copying the mage’s actions from memory when he activates the crystal. Knowing the mage was Viktor I wonder if some of the theatricality was to make the gestures easy to copy? Not that making hextech easier for Jayce to crack actually helps with the apocalypse but I’m not sure what the mage was trying to do, and if he’s leaving Jayce with runes he does seem to want Jayce to be able to use them.
I don’t really have anything to say about the floating. It’s amazing and they’re so happy. Just pure wonder.
“This is not what Piltover’s future looks like, my dear boys.” Heimerdinger really wants them to come down so he can scold them. They’re his dear, wayward pupils and he’s very fond of both of them, far too fond to really be angry.

& by the way i literally CONSTANTLY think about how loop uses the partys titles to create distance to remind themself that those arent 'their versions' of them. that theyre not loops party anymore. and yet and yet and yet

You ever see something that is meant to be like...an overgeneralized statement for the sake of entertainment or comedy and not at all serious but it's about YOUR special interest and you are just sitting there trying not to explode with an entire explanation of why it's such an overgeneralized statement and the depth of the topic
#spitblaze says things#like. im not about to shame anyone about this. i WANT more people to be interested in video games as a storytelling medium#and calling someone a fucking casual about it Does Not Help#but it IS still a big big overgeneralization to say that all games in the 80s were simple arcade style deals#adventure games came into being in the 80s! maniac mansion and kings quest and snatcher! all 80s titles!#if we wanna go back even further the first Ultima game was 1979! as soon as we had the technology to make more narrative and complex games#we DID#obviously we see more of that now because its the easiest its ever been to make video games and put infinite thought and resources into#worldbuilding and narrative#and YEAH most 70s and 80s games were simple bc uh. our computers werent that good yet lol#but like. oh my god dragon quest and final fantasy 1 came out a year apart in thr 80#do not tell me it was all run jump get the coin lol
