It's said that Hanahaki was originally caused by suppressed feelings, don't remember where I read this but basically your body is a garden that you have to take care of and keeping your feelings bottled up inside you is bad because as they grow up taking more and more space there's no place for the garden which ends up in you coughing up flowers, the only way to stop this is to let out your feelings.

So what I'm saying here is

everyone's been telling me about the actual origin of hanahaki and now i'm upset that so many people took an amazing trope and turned it mid. and that it's so prevalent that i actually thought it was about unrequited love. sigh
