how did bunny reader & rafe meet !

bunny and rafe’s first meeting was anything but subtle, and it was all rafe's doing.

it was at a party, one of those over-the-top beach bonfire kind of nights that everyone knew about but no one admitted to actually wanting to attend. bunny had been dragged along by a friend who insisted she needed to “get out more,” even though bunny’s idea of fun was more along the lines of oversized sweaters and quiet nights in. still, she showed up, a little unsure of herself but trying to blend in. she wasn’t exactly the life of the party, but she did her best to stay out of the way and just observe the chaos.

as she moved through the crowd, trying to find a quiet corner, she tripped. of course. she was always tripping, getting tangled up in her oversized hoodie, the sleeves too long, her sneakers just a bit too big. this time, though, she tripped over a random piece of sand or maybe someone’s foot—it didn’t matter. she felt herself tumbling forward, bracing for impact.

but before she hit the ground, a hand shot out, catching her by the wrist. bunny blinked up, her head spinning for a moment, only to see rafe standing there, towering over her with that lazy, amused grin on his face.

“whoa there, baby. easy,” rafe said, his voice low and teasing, his hand warm around her wrist as he steadied her.

bunny blinked at him, dazed, her wide eyes flicking between him and the ground. “uh... what just happened?” she mumbled, clearly out of it.

rafe chuckled, clearly enjoying the moment. “you’re lucky i’m here, huh? not sure you would’ve made it out of that one in one piece,” he said, his smirk widening. there was something almost patronizing in his tone, but it wasn’t unkind. it was the kind of teasing that wasn’t mean-spirited, just... playful.

bunny frowned, confused and flustered. “i... i’m fine.” she brushed herself off, embarrassed, not really understanding what was going on. she didn’t know him, and yet here he was, treating her like she was some helpless thing who couldn’t make it through a party without tripping.

rafe took a step back, studying her with a half-amused, half-curious look. “sure you are, baby.” his eyes flicked over her, lingering for just a moment too long. “you’re not really the ‘outgoing’ type, are you?”

“no, i’m... not,” bunny muttered, avoiding his gaze, unsure of why she felt so small under his stare.

“figures.” rafe grinned, a little softer now. “don’t worry. i’ll keep an eye on you. can’t have you wandering around here, tripping over everything.”

“i don’t—” bunny started, but she trailed off, realizing that arguing wouldn’t do much. instead, she just gave him a small, sheepish smile, though she didn’t entirely understand why he was suddenly looking out for her.

“don’t get too used to it,” he added with a wink, before walking off, leaving bunny standing there, a little more confused—and definitely a lot more flustered��than before.

she had no idea what it was about rafe that made her feel like he’d seen right through her. but that moment, when he’d caught her and called her “baby,” lingered in the back of her mind like a lingering echo. something about it didn’t sit right, but at the same time, she couldn’t deny that she felt a pull toward him, even if she didn’t fully understand why.
