Mugshot Monday - "Improving Minneapolis" coffee mug with Morning Glory Cold Brew by Peace Coffee

Last Friday, I attended my first Social Media Breakfast in probably 10 years! It was excellent.

The talk was at the Improving Minneapolis building in Northeast where Tony Tellijohn of Aktion Interactive spoke about social media marketing.

Social Media Breakfast (SMBMSP) is a monthly event where like-minded folks across the Twin Cities get together to share and learn about social media.

As their name suggests, breakfast is provided before each event: there are bagels, cheesecake, coffee and bacon. Sooooo much delicious bacon.

I've been out of the social media marketing world for about 10 years, but recently my wife launched Ying Spring Acupuncture, her new clinic in South Minneapolis, so I'm helping her with marketing.

Of course, a ton has changed in social from 10 years ago! SMBMSP moderator Jen Roventine asked great questions and Tony had great insights on the subject.

I'll be attending more of these breakfasts in the future.

This event was was kind of a reunion of sorts for me--I got to reconnect with some awesome humans IRL, like Greg Swan, Missy Voronyak, and Lindsay Valenty to name a few. I also met a lot of new folks as well.

I've known SMBMSP Director Mykl Roventine for a loooooong time, and it was so great to catch up with him a little before the event.

He found some Improving coffee mugs for a reunion selfie! 📸 ☕️

SMBMSP has been at many venues over the years, but I LOVE this current space at Improving Minneapolis near Northeast Athletic Field Park. It's nice and big, yet cozy and has plenty of parking. It's perfect.

I already picked up tickets to SMBMSP's next event on May 17 featuring Greg Swan & Jenny Swan: "Putting Humans Back in Social Media". See you there?

jack is the kind of guy to wake up when his alarm goes off and immediately shower, run, eat breakfast, etc. to get ready for the day bc he doesn’t really have time for anything else and it makes him feel more productive, plus he gets a good amount of sleep. he might lay in bed for a minute to wake up but then he’s on the move. davey is the kind of guy to set his alarm for an hour earlier than he needs to wake up so he can check his email and mindlessly scroll on insta/twitter/etc before having to do any sort of getting out of bed. he has to prep his brain for the daunting task of being known for the day and he needs his silly little screentime

You know what I hate?

I was going to come on here and write an idea, a thought, a rant. And then, I got distracted with doing something else that was on my to-do list, and I'm fucking pissed. I'm pissed because this is how it is. This is how it is in this time where you're being influenced and dragged in 20 different directions that your mind will put in certain barriers and blockers, or even pop-ups that show up as you assert your authentic self, your voice.

Aren't you getting tired of it all? I feel like I'm getting tired. I've been shifting my mindset by checking in with myself to see how I'm being filled up and energized by these different stories, memes, and posts on social media if I'm really retaining anything, and if it's really making a difference. At this point, I've determined I've retained enough. It's important to be informed, but I don't think being told for 4 hours of my day (that's how long I apparently spend on my phone, most of it on social media). The world is going to shit because it inevitably has to because it is shit, and shitty things can only last so long.

You know what I'm tired of (the original point of this post before I got heavily distracted) is how my mind just ambushes me about how I should eat. I should be eating this, and this, and this much, and don't drink that. It's fucking exhausting. Aren't you exhausted? I just want to eat my breakfast in peace without my inner critic dictating every part of my breakfast and what it should look like and consist of. Que martirio, dios mio. Just be quiet...for 15 minutes. Can I just enjoy my meal in peace? Can I only enjoy life if I'm abiding by the societal and cultural perfectionistic Gods that be that have infiltrated our collective unconscious? And even then, it's such an exhaustive job to keep it together when life is not that organized.

What a shit show this is. Fuck it all.

#image commentary in tags once again since they don't allow captions anymore and I feel weird using the alt text for that --#1. PIBBINS.... cheering clapping hooting hollering glorious applause everytime I see a pigeon in public #2. Birthday card that I drew for someone. .. kittys...#3. 2023's annual haul of tiny white pumpkins.. i get at least one white pumpkin every year around fall when they have pumpkins in stores #because I just love the color and texture ... bright white and smooth and cold and round.. kind of like a volleyball or something #4. A brief adventure into watching big brother (only earlier seasons of course as I hate all reality shows post like 2013 or something when #they became overly focused on social media and overproduced memeable phrases more.. like even though ALL reality shows have always #been extremely fake and annoying and mindless it's like..... newer stuff seems A Different Kind Of Fake or something) since whenever #I'm sick sometimes I find weird mindless things like that to watch (that one time I had bronchitis I watched all of Flavor of Love in my #half awake illness stupor and now everytime I heat up canned minestrone soup (mostly all I ate that week) I think of flavor flav since #thats just a weird brain connection I have now lol) ANYWAY.. I was sick and watched like 2 seasons of this and then thought it was too #uninteresting and obnoxious to continue (more like 1 and a half since I skipped the rest of one once only boring people were left) BUT this #one guy had a very mischevious looking face and he also said a few things (like the above captioned speech) that sounded like dialogue #some fantasy character would say.. so I took a screencap of him and edited him into a mischevious wizard i guess.?? idk I was sick lol #~your little friend has a poisoned tongue~ is just a very unexpectedly serious sounding wording for some random normal #frat dude looking guy to say while casually chatting on a reality tv show in like 2008 or whenever that was filmed lol #5. FLUFFY CLOVERS!! I'd never seen them be furry and soft before?? inchresting..#6. Noodle sitting in bed with the cat figurines looming above him... the council of kittys...#7. McDonald's full breakfast platter + asparagus + strawberries & cream (also of course this is old and I am now boycotting mcdonalds etc)#i try to group the images somewhat consistently like.. winter stuff with winter stuff or summer stuff with summer stuff #but I have so many random pictrues floating around on my computer that I never post that sometimes some are not organized or just #thrown into a set because there's nowhere else for them. writing update :)

-i know i said painter au chapter 9 was nearly finished but then i … decided to essentially rewrite it lol (i’m much happier with it now it’ll be worth the extra wait) it’s still not finished but i’m back in the groove and making good progress now

-i wrote a oneshot that people seem to really be enjoying! you know i love a little wilmon confronting trauma moment

-lake house .. so sorry to my lake house stans but editing it is tedious and i really don’t want to update until i’ve edited the past chapters, plus i think chapter 10 may need some rewrites so i’m not sure when she’ll be out but i promise it’s not abandoned! bear with me 😫

-lastly: i don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up but twitter got ahold of my maddierosh fic and really loved it so there’s been some … ideas for a follow up bouncing around in my little brain … it’s not my priority but sometimes i like to churn out a oneshot if i’m struggling with my longer pieces so who knows

thank you for your patience; and if you want faster updates i swear almost every comment i receive genuinely spurs me to open my google docs app and keep going in that very moment so do not underestimate the effectiveness of dropping a short lil comment on an old piece if you’re feeling impatient <3

#i know it’s hard to follow fics when there’s not consistent updates so it truly means so much to me #that people are invested even though im not able to work on such a tight schedule #was just journaling about the difference between working from a place of trying to create content #versus making art #because there is such a difference when i treat my writing updates as social media updates that should be churned out quickly #vs actually making sure that the things im making are deeply aligned with the things i am aiming to examine #i would rather work closely and intentionally and deeply even if that is a slower process #because i know that is the way to create things that truly move people and stick with them which is really important to me #if people are going to spend their time reading my work i want to honor that by giving the most that i can in return #because it really does blow my mind and make my heart feel like it might explode knowing that people are reading my stories #like these things that live in my brain? are in the world? someone commented they were eating breakfast through tears #and i felt so horribly tender towards that person i will never know it just.#is so moving to me #and i’m very very grateful #and all the waiting will be worth it i promise
