Bakugo notices the second you start acting different. you’re quieter, ducking your head more, tugging at your hoodie like it can hide you. and yeah, he might not be the most delicate guy in the world, but he’s not stupid.

“you been actin’ weird since the haircut,” he finally mutters one night, eyes flicking to you across the couch. you try to brush it off, say it’s nothing, big mistake. cue the aggressive affection.

next thing you know, he’s calling you “gorgeous” in the most pissed-off tone possible. glaring at you like it’s your fault he’s so in love. “I don’t care what your hair looks like. you think I’m with you ‘cause of that? tch dumbass.”

he’s not always good with soft stuff, but every now and then, when you’re half-asleep on his chest, he’ll grumble something like, “y’know, I actually like it,i can see your face better now s’cute.”

Shoto doesn’t say much when you first show up with your head shaved just tilts his head slightly, takes you in like a painting he’s trying to understand, and goes, “you look different. I like it.”

simple. honest. no fluff, no faking.

but he notices. the way your fingers linger on hats or how you suddenly start avoiding taking pics sometimes. he’s quiet, but not oblivious.

so he starts saying things. not often, and not loud, but always when it counts. like brushing your hair used to be a part of his routine with you, and now he just places his hand gently on the back of your head instead, thumb stroking soft circles.

“you’re beautiful,” he says one night, eyes fixed on yours while the glow of your phone screen lights the room. “you know that, right?” you try to deflect with a joke—he doesn’t laugh. just leans in and kisses your forehead like that’s enough to silence every thought in your head.

when you tell him you feel less than, he stares at you for a long second, then says, “you could shave it again tomorrow, or dye it green, or never grow it back at all. I’d still look at you the same.” there was a small silence as you could see him clearly thinking about something “okay maybe don’t do green…i don’t wanna feel like im kissing midoriya.”

Kirishima’s the type to be all “woah, that’s hot!” when he first sees your shaved head. his eyes light up, like you’ve just done the most badass thing in the world. he’s so hype about it, you almost forget why you’re self-conscious in the first place. almost.

but then he notices the way you start covering up more, or how you look away when he’s complimenting you, and he realizes—something’s up.

he’s not gonna let you slip under the radar, though. “hey, come on, you’re still the most awesome person I know,” he’ll say, making sure to keep his voice upbeat. “you’re literally the definition of sexy, so if anyone’s staring at you, they’re just jealous!”

and yea he’ll keep throwing in compliments like, “looking sharp as hell, babe,” and “can’t believe I’m dating someone as cool as you.” but when it seems like you’re still struggling, he gets a thoughtful look on his face.

the next day, you’re sitting on the couch, and Kirishima casually walks in with a freshly shaved head. “I thought I should join you,” he says with that signature grin. “we’re both gonna be rocking the bald look together.” he pats his head and laughs. “what’s the point of being the toughest guy around if you don’t support your partner?”

i feel like this dude gets no sleep. ever. but honestly i think he probably wouldnt need it? i mean being around for hundreds of years and being brought back from the dead several times, youd think victoria would give him some upgrades (one of them being not requiring sleep)

i could still see him like napping if he got the chance but its rare. victoria always needs something from him

definitely just talks to the monsters when he gets bored in the catacombs. do they respond? usually no. when they do its usually not friendly

ughujgh him and victorias relationship makes me sickkkk they definitely have like a very toxic friendship. ygor relies on her and is very dependent on victoria, he wouldnt know what to do without her. she takes advantage of this and is usually pretty mean to him, knowing that he wont retaliate

despite being around for hundreds of years adapting to new technology wasnt hard for him at all. hes very smart honestly (only a little bit dense) and he uses new technology to his advantage during his experiments (cough cough watches youtube tutorials)

i really do think he enjoys when victoria lets him leave the catacombs to go out and about in darkmoor (and yes, i did learn from a cast member that hes only allowed up there when victoria says so) i think that he enjoys other human interactions that arent just "find body parts for me" and "the monster needs adjustments" and "ygor why did you eat my lunch"

For sure! I should've been mindful to mention that I haven't read anything contemporary with David. I am really behind with comics overall.

I'm not coming at you but I wanna use your post as an opportunity to elaborate and clarify, 'cause I wrote the first one while a little high at 3AM and feel now that it's badly written lol.

The point I wanted to make is much less about David being written with empathy or characterized positively, as a victim of his disabiliy or anything like that.

What I'm getting at is, it's cool that whoever was working on costume for the FX series thought to make sure the patient uniform had no shoelaces.

The FX series rejects the whole padded cell straight jacket aesthetic of the earlier comics and constructs a new aesthetic that communicates the specific tone of David's disability and confinement in innovative and strictly character-first ways. It's not a padded cell straight jacket, rather it's a more discrete combination of a hundred little things, like being made to wear a uniform with only minimal differentiation from others, or the artificial forest backgrounds in the group therapy room that combines the familiar disability visual language of therapy with a visual symbol of artificiality to contrast the fakeness of the environment with the reality of David's conversation with Rogue. I mean with Sydney lol.

Sidenote, on a point about signalling to disabled people that this is an in-house thing: Sydney Barrett -> Syd Barrett, singer of Pink Floyd, who was pretty famous for having some kinda schizophrenia or adjacent business goin on. Syd Barrett had actually himself been confined to psychiatric treatment before and this influenced a lot of Pink Floyd's music. Schizophrenics of a certain generation tend to claim him and his music has symbolic significance within the online community. Cute stuff.

So like, FX Legion avoids using shallow aesthetic (padded room straight jacket) to communicate that David is crazy, and more engaging to show how his environment is constructed, responds to, and compels certain self-definitions of disability.

They actually made a promo that engages directly with this visual language. Padded room, straight jacket, hearing voices, a scared whisper of "is this real?" These are all the signifiers an artist would use to communicate mental illness to an able-bodied audience and I think it's telling that while promotional material did this, the show itself was always very tongue-in-cheek when approaching anything of this territory, usually deconstructing it.

Notice he super does not know what's going on from the promos, which used this visual language intentionally to be misleading.

FX Legion is instead a massive deconstruction of the kind of narrative that its promotions advertised, communicated through new aesthetics that combine in-community disability symbols across numerous decades. Conversely, narrative the promotions advertised were, well, more or less the exact narrative the early comics (at least the ones I read) choose to tell, communicated with the same kinda dodgy "sanitarium" Exorcist III aesthetics the able-bodied world was already familiar with.

Anyway my point is David is cool, I like the character a lot, the Legion FX series is one of the best shows ever made in dealing with psychosocial disability becaue it engages in the kind of environment-as-character worldbuilding I'm on about, and i think that a lot of disabled comic characters fall really flat because writers and artists don't really know how to engage with these aesthetics and symbols beyond the strictly literal. This is at its most blunt when Wolverine shoves Charles down some stairs but the mansion is never shown as having any device that would enable Charles to be on the second floor in the first place lol.

I promise I will shut up about disabilities in comics, but I wanna make one last point.

There's a kind of writing where disability, or more often the abuse of someone with a disability, is employed for shock value and South Parkian offensiveness. This isn't really the kind of thing that's going to offend most disabled readers of comics. I think to be a reader of comics you kind of have to be fairly desensitized to violence or the abuse of characters. I mean, shit, Spider-Man's life is basically endless misery and he's considered a bright, optimistic, positive character with bright, optimistic, positive stories most of the time.

Rather, I think what seems to stick in the craw of most disabled readers I know, and especially myself, is when disabled aesthetics are used superficially to invoke disability but the disabled person's actual life as a disabled person isn't really considered beyond that. It's sad that Xavier or Barbara Gordon can't walk, but let's not consider what that means for their actual lives.

So there's this disconnect in the community sometimes, like...

Able-bodied reader (Lawful Good): omg! how evil! how cruel! to do that to a disabled person! this is really crossing the line! this is really beating balls!

Able-bodied reader (Chaotic Evil): lol. haha. lol. yeah charles xavier CAN'T climb stairs. funny observation, mark millar I assume

Disabled reader: how the fuck did he get up to the second floor? seriously there's no elevator or chairlift or anything

I think you can really see a difference in the two approaches in Legion.

The Legion of the comics is played as scary because he's disabled, the aesthetics of mental illness and disability are invoked purely for horror, and we're made to fear what he can inflict on others. There's no consideration of his environment beyond the superficial use of a psychiatric ward uniform and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure hair (a signifier of severe mental illness if ever there was one). He is raised in abusive psychiatric confinement but remains at that level even when removed from it, he does not react to his environment so much as he is produced by it in a near permanent sense.

Meanwhile, David of the Legion FX series (one of the best artistic communications of SCZ I have ever seen) focuses exhaustively on David's environment. On the conditions he has been made to live in and the effect they have such as the often futile and punitive nature of psychiatric confinement, and the people who have affected him in a general sense and particularly in relation to his disability.

Legion FX uses an intentionally anarchronistic combination of disabled aesthetics specifically to avoid the use of disabled imagery for any familiar purpose, be it horror or sympathy, to shift the audience's focus to his environment at basically all times.

David is abused in both narratives, that's sort of the point of Legion as a character - what happens if you abuse someone with Xavier-level powers - but in the former he's often treated as a kind of horror movie monster while in the latter he's treated as a human being first and foremost. The former never lets you doubt that he's mentally ill and being cuhraaazy and mad at Charles is his primary motivator. I want to mention that comic book Legion has a 1990s idea of what we today call dissociative identity disorder, not schizophrenia, but it hardly fucking matters because he's just written as weird, a real weirdo, he doesn't fit in and he doesn't want to fit in, have you ever seen him not raving psychotically? Okay, that's weird.

Meanwhile, the latter version plays with this idea that he might be misunderstanding his psychic powers as schizophrenia and pulls off an incredible plotline where some essential oils self-help guru lady convinces him to desist with his meds and this ends badly for everybody lol. Even once David is unambiguously confirmed to be psychic and schizophrenic at the same time (not a spoiler in comic book world), the narrative makes absolutely clear that his actions are a consequence of treatment and environment, not some inherent fiendishness. We even see a dimension-hopping episode where David's life plays out a range of ways based on key moments changing and while he's schizophrenic in every timeline, the outcome is different each time.

The former seeks to shock and offend as a horror movie would, the latter seeks to empathize and humanize.

The former reads (to me, anyway) as kind of offensive not because it's just an evil crazy person stereotype (if I were offended by this I'd just never consume any American media), but because his character feels impossible within his environment and context. He's just crazy and scary because he's crazy.

The latter is directly a result of his environment at all times and the world is built around his existence, both to accommodate and to create barriers, with the effects of those accommodations and barriers being central to the narrative.

All this is to say,

i was typing in the notes but i decided to just make it a reblog cause i dont want to flood your notes with all that text and edits and stuff

heres what i did put in the notes

i saw this and i wanted to kind of chime in with binders they have straps because thats what holds the weight of the chest it all goes on the shoulders thats why binder companies dont really make strapless binders also i would really be careful with anything off amazon because of that and also because alot of binders off amazon can be pretty dangerous binders from other companies are build to be breathable with wicking fabric and easier to take on and off and their stretchy the non stretchy material is only in the front on the inside the rest of it stretches to allow you to breathe but with amazon binders theyre not always built that way some of them have clips so you clip yourself in and it holds you there making it difficult to get full deep breaths of air because it doesnt stretch with you as you breathe and when you sit or lean over so its easier to get stuck bruise a rib and get heat stroke because of the thicker fabric or maybe even break ribs depending on how restricting it is

and also you absolutely can tape with double ds! theres a video tutorial of someone doing it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwP0NAjKg84&t=6s and heres a manual if youd rather read instead binding is on the fourth page https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2047/9887/files/TransTape_Manual_Editable_1.pdf?v=1707761350 if you choose tape id recommend trans tape because its a more fabric type material and so it breathes well its also waterproof but remember to not just rip it off it needs to be slowly peeled and of course if it starts hurting your skin stop and last thing its heat activated so the hotter you get the clingier it gets so its easier and safest to take off when youre cooled down you can take a cold shower or just use a ice pack and oil to remove it it defiantly takes a couple tries to figure it out but it works and as long as your safe about it and of course not allergic to what its made of it should work and not hurt take care

i ran out of space but i was also going to say like with anything you put on your skin you should use a test strip on your arm first to make sure youre not allergic before putting it on your chest

also forgot to add its not that strapless binders wouldnt work safely because you use straps to move the pressure of your chest to your shoulders without them theres nothing to support the weight so if you were to make a strapless binder work youd have to make it tighter and tighter and not stretch with you so it would stay put and bind you without falling off and riding down and thats just not really safe it would compress your chest to much and you need your chest to expand to be able to breathe

and what i wanted to add on was

Hello, I’ve got some binder questions that I’ve been a bit unsuccessful about finding answers to and I was wondering if there was anything you could help answer for me

Situation is I am a cis woman (and yes I’m sure, did my experimentation with gender and ended up back in the same place but with a new perspective) and I am looking for a good way to bind without shoulder straps of any kind. Like a kinda wrap around binder. Im not sure tape is a good option cuz I’ve got DDs, and I know not to use bandages. Im not gonna be wearing a binder much at all really, it’s just that some of the clothes I like wearing aren’t always compatible with a large chest. And I can’t really wear a strappy sundress with a very visible binder

I’ve always heard that binding without any shoulder support is not good to do, but I’m really not gonna be binding often. So would it still be a problem to bind for a few hours every now and again. Do I just buy one of those Amazon strapless binders? Don’t wanna kill my boobs because they are actually pretty cool

Hey! I completely understand. The binders that I personally use have straps and I would recommend them but I understand if they aren't for every day or multiple hours at a time use. Maybe a sports bra or something similar might be helpful? I'm not sure about the Amazon strapless binders as I've never used one myself however if that seems like the right option for you!

one of my favorite tropes is casual use of OCs in fanfic

like. the guy goes to a convention and makes some friends and they're all OCs. or the guy goes to a new school and all his friends there are OCs. or. any number of things like that

and it sucks that usually the connotation of "OC in fic" is actually about self inserts of the author (which... is fine? typically has bad connotations of being cringe or whatever but I'm currently technically co-authoring a reader insert fic so yknow. cringe is dead) and that the only OC in those types of fics is the self insert. gimme more fics where there's like a dozen OCs seamlessly integrated into the canon characters' lives

Mattmac's acting in TD will never not be insane to me, bcs its probably the only acting that genuinely fully made me think, yeah he completely escaped into the role. It's not that there's not any other actors out there that I think are amazing, but it's still often hard for me for the most part to separate the actor and their roles, especially if I've seen a lot of their work.
