Hello, everyone!

Got some stuff to share! Our artists had a bit of a respite as we took a breather between the Moontail push, but we’re continuing back to work! 

As stated previously, most of our art efforts have been towards accessories and mass illustration of the same things over again, so that legaves less “new” things to share, but we’ll be sharing what we’ve accomplished!

We are actively working on the colors for this piece, but we shared a preview of the work in progress earlier this month! 

 We have also decided to divide up the original item into two items: the Creeping Vine and Creeping Thicket.

We decided this after understanding that a division will allow for more variability and utility of the item.

Decor Check In

Previously, we shared decor which was attempted to fit into the backdrop style, intending for decor to fit seamlessly into a backdrop. However, after careful consideration and several iterations, we have decided that from now on, decor will by stylized like the cats and fauna. 

Decor will be lined with soft-cell shading, and will not look blended into the backdrop itself. We found that with varying textures and shading unique to different backdrop environments, the aesthetics were unsustainable and problematic long term. We have begun production on decor which closer resembles the stylistic truth of cats, icons, and fauna, and we feel this direction will be much stronger in the long term! 

Pelt System

And something big… a design for the pelt system! This design took a lot of work, as we wanted to make the process as seamless and quality as possible. 

There is a lot of information to work with on this page, and we’re quite proud of how it’s turned out. We hope users enjoy! 

Users will be able to toggle on breed poses to upload, so as to avoid a long drop down. If a pelt is a commission, users will be invited to credit the proper artist. 

In addition, we have an "add more" feature which will invite and allow users to submit more poses for their pelt even after the pelt has been approved and added into the game. 

Submitting more poses at once offers a slight discount because it is easier on the mod team. But importantly, at any time users will be able to expand pelts into new breed releases. This will serve to prevent item and submission bloat! 

One of the most exciting developments in this category has been our adaptation for pelts to utilize the dynamic layering. Using the PSD and layer system we already designed and implemented, users will be able to utilize it too for unclipped pelts! 

Our system works by users paying an upfront fee for moderation approval, and then all further printing will be at a significantly cheaper rate. Creators will also be able to list their pelts for sale without printing, in which buyers pay the print cost as a tax, giving sellers more freedom. 

We will be basing the cost of pelt submissions on our ability to pay moderators a fair rate. We are currently running tests to time and calculate our moderation efforts, so no prices are set in stone yet! 

Development Check In

User Settings

We’ve completed work on user settings. Users can now change their icons to any cat they own, validate new emails, change their password, username, and Borough! Mundane, but hugely necessary advancements.

In general, we're currently working on the pelt system and general polish. We’ve also just begun implementing ways for users to pay for digital content, which is huge for us. 

And with that, one more announcement regarding development support...

Trying out Patreon!

Many months ago, we discussed the option of opening up tertiary support efforts, such as "support bundles," as a way to continually aid and bolster development. We denied pursuing this avenue at the time, because we had to focus solely on development with the resources at our disposal already. We mentioned a plan to do something in the future when the time was right. 

Since then, we've gotten countless questions on how people can support us after missing the Kickstarter, and how they may help contribute to our development. 

We are at a point in our timeline now where we could utilize the support funds. Our scope is higher than it was when we first imagined the project, and while we've been able to manage expectations vs. the necessary additions to make our game the best it can be out the gate, we've decided to open up support for those who'd love to see more behind the scenes.

! Not signing up will not harm the project! It does NOT void nor devalue your Kickstarter rewards, nor will we EVER be handing out retired goods through this platform !

Please do not feel obligated to signup if you are not in a place to! This is simply something we're pursuing as an additional avenue of support in a time where we can use it, especially for those who have asked how they can engage with the project while having missed the Kickstarter. 

Like the idea of support bundles, we are offering something amidst the work. We'll be offering behind the scenes updates, showing off sketches, drafts, development shots, and the design process of content that is typically only shown in a finished or near-finished state for our public updates. 

Simply put: see things before the public sees 'em! 

We work every weekday, so there will always be something new to show. Get frequent posts of the lore workshopping, the design pipeline, UI/UX designs, compositions, and all the other juicy tidbits of behind the scenes. 

We'll be thinking about what more to offer in addition, but the last thing we want is to introduce more retired stuff, or undermine the exclusivity of the perks promised in the Kickstarter. This is not Kickstarter 2. 

However, if this Patreon offers a lucrative solution for us, we may be able to expand our expectations for breed releases, mechanic timelines, and content updates! 

All content on this page is available at a low price, and higher tiers do not give more behind the scenes. Instead, we've priced higher options if users would like to be credited as supporters on the credits page of the game. 

And Kickstarter backers will also be automatically credited from here on. 

As a way to reward the highest tier, we will also feature exclusive community polling. This is different and more lowkey than the giant polls we have done in the past. Sometimes, we as a team have deliberations for small things; minor design choices, UI differences, or content that has generally been too inconsequential to burden the community with giant polls. As a way to engage and have some fun, we're taking these smaller discussions here! 

Large polls which pertain to more serious and consequential topics, such as sweeping mechanic changes or big decisions that we specifically want community input on, will still be done publicly. 

Lastly, it's unclear at this time what the fate of this page will be once we move into launch. We may repurpose it as a way to recruit beta testing for new updates post-launch, we may shut it down, and we may keep it exactly as is with behind the scenes exclusivities and previews before content hits the game. Depending on the pros and cons during slower development cycles, we'll have to make that call when we get there. But right now we're in full force on mass production, and we'd love to keep on that track!

Sharing my contribution to the Umbral Wings Tarot Deck with my art for the Knight of Water!

Going to dip a little bit into the designmaking process itself under the cut!

The Knight of Water is thematically about sensitivity. Charm, romance imagination-as a person, it's about a 'knight in shining armor' type character who may help others with the matters of the heart.

I also wanted to note that another cool thing about this deck is that the artists were designated their suit depending on their art and rendering style! The Air suit focuses on more atmospheric type art, Fire is character symbolism driven, in the Earth suit you'll se a lot of traditional-style rendering, and in the Water suit you'll see a lot more anime-inspired art styles!

With these factors in mind, I wanted a composition that would pay homage to the classic anime bishoujo genre--sailor moon and utena played heavily into the design and composition--something with lots of sparkles, atmospheric framing, a pretty waterfall to tie in the elemental theme, and lots and lots (and LOTS) of roses. (Fun fact! If you look at each rose, they have a heart in the centre! Each one was carefully and painstakingly hand drawn!). The pose that was chosen for this card was also a direct homage to the classic Sailor Moon style transformation sequences (and also swan mating dances with the wings), with the element of a 'bleeding heart' visual cue so to speak with the red roses and petals to the chest haha--it was fun going through different pose ideas before settling on this one! Roses and thorns go hand in hand, so thorny vines were also added at the bottom so that they become more evident when the card is inverted! (The inverted card speaks of emotional upset, depression, hypersensitivity, and lashing out)

For the dragon design itself, I took the 'prince on a white horse' and 'knight in shining armor' aspect and meshed them with leafy and weedy sea dragons and betta fish from real life to make a unicorn-like design--a creature that is traditionally associated with sensitivity and emotions--with a classic anime magical girl spin. I wanted the design to look ethereal and noble, and still clearly a dragon instead of a horse! (It was trickier than one might think!)

That's all the notes I have at the moment! Overall this was an Incredibly fun project to think through, I know I've been absolutely vibrating off the walls to share this haha! Everyone else has also brought their A game to each card in this deck, be sure to check them out through the KS link when you can, I can assure you that each and every card is just as lovingly rendered as this one!

something difficult about writing/storytelling but only in short disconnected bursts is that writing anything longform is very difficult. there isn't as much time to practice long-term character development or subtlety (implying character instead of immediately clarifying) when its not really meant to go anywhere but a notes app. its a little frustrating...i'd love to do something more longform though. i've considered maybe just doing some short writing scenes in my various original universes a lot recently mostly because i just havent had time to draw anything fancy recently </3 maybe that would be something...

jeonghan and chan are not about to let you live this down. sure, they appreciate your work and they're hopelessly endeared by your cuteness. but you don't have to know that. instead, they fall back on joking around. jeonghan would probably proudly refer to himself as your 'bias', while chan goads you for having a crush on him. they're a little annoying about it, but it's only because they don't know how to properly express just how much this little hobby of yours means to them. junhui is a bit of somewhere in the middle. he'll have a wisecrack (or two) about your pages, but he's ultimately more openly appreciative of what he considers to be genuine art. he'll start begging you to make him copies or collages for his own keeping. if you comply, he'll have one in his wallet at all times, to look at whenever he misses you. wonwoo's teasing is a lot more pared down compared to the others. it's still there, though. his little remarks about taking photos on dates for your 'wonu book' (his words, not yours). as much as he'll tease you about it, there's also a quiet air of affection around him. he'll be more willing to pose how you want him or to dress in certain clothes if it means it will make you happy with the pages you end up doing.

seungcheol is smug. of course he is. he's proud, even, when he sees how much time and effort you've put in to these little pages of him. he's likely to encourage it in the form of more cute stationery, to the point that you'll have to beg him to stop getting you stuff. he'll joke to you that it's an investment— the equivalent exchange being that he now has to see all your future pages, too. jihoon gives off the air of someone who doesn't really seem to care about what you consider to be an embarrassing secret. inwardly, he's impressed. he's an artist himself, after all, and he knows how much goes in to creating. but what will really get you is when you realize he's not joking about the song-after-every-date. he'll write anything from a full track to a couple of verses. if you have your journal, he has his composition book with your name at the very front. minghao and vernon will be similar in the sense that they're both appreciative of your effort, as well as the artistry of the pages. minghao is likely to comment on the little details of your spreads while vernon will ask all the right questions to learn more about it. they won't bug you about it moving forward, though there's a private sort of contentment to them that this is something you do for/because of them.

oh, these three. soonyoung will scream about it to literally everyone. he acts almost like no one has ever done this for him before. when you try to point out that he probably has fans who does this on the daily, he takes personal offense. because this is you. him from your perspective. and he'll talk about it until the day he dies, he swears. in tagalog/filipino, there's an untranslatable word called kilig. the closest that people have come to translating it is 'cuteness aggression', though kilig runs much deeper. that's exactly how mingyu feels when he finds out. he'll squish your cheeks, bombard you with kisses, hug you until you can't breathe. he loves you so much in that very moment, in the knowledge that you feel a fraction of what you feel for him. and seokmin, the sweetheart :( you'll probably have to check in on him because he'll be inconsolable. you're dating; he knows that. you love him; he knows that, too. but to have a physical, tangible reminder of it? to hold proof of that love in his hands, in the form of a carefully curated journal? he'll cry you a river over just how grateful he is to love well and be loved well.

best believe that mr. arts and crafts joshua hong would immediately be on board. of course, he's largely appreciative of your effort, but he's also mostly keen on picking up this little hobby with you. he'll be infuriatingly good at it, too, with his eye for color and his attention to detail. it will become a new 'thing' for the two of you, to log your dates this way. seungkwan has a lot less finesse. he doesn't really know what he's doing, but his enthusiasm makes up for it. he's more likely to end up with a lot of stray stickers and pen marks on his palms. at the end of the day, he wants to make good on his word: you deserve to be seen from the perspective of someone who loves you, too.

It's heartbreaking, being a fictional character in a fictional world. They're either loved and cared for until they're abandoned by their player, or they're mistreated and misplaced by that player. There's no control, no option for them.

They could fall in love. They could do everything to please their player, but in the end, their player will always leave them behind. They'll end up as some toy to tinker with, a little plaything until their player gets bored and slowly but surely begins to leave them behind.

You did that to them— you did it to him. Maybe you used him so much that you got too bored, or perhaps you just found someone else to play with; you did reach friendship level 10 with him. During your friendship level journey, you've played and listened to all of the voice lines he provided, even repeating your favorites. He sought after the joy of hearing your praise, comments, and remarks in response to his voice lines. He's seen so much of you over the course of the journey, and, in return, he showed himself to you.

But then you left him.

It started off with you visiting strange domains and obtaining its artifacts. Judging by the collection, you definitely weren't trying to rebuild him. Those artifacts and materials were clearly meant for somebody else.

He'd often watch you switch teams to build that mystery person, maybe to test them out; to use them; to play with them. Yet, you'd always come back to him afterward, and because of that, he was fine, satisfied. As long as you'd keep coming back.

But, at some point, you simply didn't return.

He was fighting the monsters of a smoky blue leyline, and he, having won the battles, gave you those same purple and maroon papers that you needed for this mystery person. You were happy. You looked really relieved to finally get these, and through the mask of an idle animation, he smiled, proud of himself for making you smile. You thanked him, and then you switched the character and team, and you were out of view once more.

He sighed, tired from fighting all these battles and random enemies, but he was glad that you'd probably be able to finish leveling this mystery character up. Now you can keep playing with and using him, right? This way, you'll be done with this other person, and you'll come back to him, right?

Wrong.

One whole day passed. You were online, but he couldn't see you.

Another day passed. Where'd you go? Are you still testing out that new person?

Five days drag by. Some of those days you didn't go on for, but for the most part, you were there, just not for him. What happened? Why weren't you coming back?

One full week had finally passed.

You were nowhere to be seen.

Waiting in the team lineup screen began to get lonely. You took two of the supports with you, and so he couldn't talk to them. One other person remained. Another support, but more off-field. Often, he would glance at them to see how they were doing, and even they looked as miserable as he did. Still, they found their way back to you through another team composition.

You took everyone with you except for him.

Where did you go?

He tumbled, falling down on the ground. It's been nearly a full month. You haven't even looked at him once. He could see through the slightly translucent walls and backgrounds, and he saw other team lineups waiting. He saw one team in use, as it had an open fourth wall and it was emptied, meaning that the characters left that team screen to join back into the world of teyvat.

He began to reminisce about his first awakening when you got him, you were smiling really hard. You were so excited when he woke up in that wishing star, striking a pose. He doesn't know how long he'd been unconscious around that time, but you woke him up, and you gave him more purpose, more life. He could see you and everything behind you. He could see that there was more than just teyvat through this strange wall you lived past. He was curious, yet he was happier just being yours to have in your little party with different people, some of which he had never seen before.

But now they're gone, and so were you. He doubts that they're ever coming back, and he doubts that you'll ever come back to him.

Wait.

The fourth wall in front of him shatters.

Is that you?

He immediately stood up, ready to greet you with that same pose he would always strike in the team lineup. And the moment you opened that wall, all of the other supports came back instantly, like they never left in the first place. He wasn't alone anymore.

His eyes lit up. You selected his character and were going through his character details. You're finally paying more attention to him! Are you finally gonna use him again? He puts his hands together as you check his artifacts.

There's a moment of hesitation in you. He barely opens his eyes to look at your apologetic face. You whisper an apology, and— to his horror— strip him of his artifacts one by one.

His flower is gone. His feather was taken. His sands timer, his goblet, and his circlet were stripped of his very being. Then you switched to his weapon. It was his very own weapon that you spent so much time on, and you took even that from him. He looked up to the upper-left corner of the room. Even if the text was backward, he could see that this new weapon was nothing but some random 1-star weapon from some measly chest you opened. You looked at him one more time, and you left his character details.

He felt betrayed. You weren't going to use him anymore. You re-entered the team lineup screen and selected him. He watched you scroll through your list of characters, and within a zap, he was transported to a black screen, a void, a room full of nothing but himself.

You had just completely replaced him.

You left the team lineup, and his eyes were forced shut. Your once beloved main was now back into his deep, endless, meaningless slumber.

“Creator! Creator!!”

A large group of people were yelling, waking him and a few others up. It was every single character that you owned and obtained throughout your journey. Some he recognized from the get-go, and others he'd never seen before in all of his life. Everyone you had obtained were shouting for you.

“Wh— wha? What's the matter?”

A short girl with brown hair and amber eyes came up to him in a panic.

“Thank Barbatos, you're up! The player is about to delete the game! We might be erased!”

He froze. You were deleting the game? He put his hand over his mouth. You were really leaving him now, weren't you?

Would you ever come back?

“Please!” The amber-eyed girl cried, “Help us!”

He wobbled backward. He couldn't take this.

“The player loves you! Maybe you can reverse this!”

“They don't.” He mumbled.

“Wh— what?”

“They don't— don't love me anymore.”

He stumbled, falling over at the realization. At that moment, everyone was panicking. The calmest people he knew were crumbling and stressing over this. He looked up at the transparent digital fourth wall. Your mouse hovered over the digital recycling bin.

Suddenly, you spoke.

“It was really nice playing the game, but I think...”

A moment of silence evoked in the crowd.

“...I think I need to start a new chapter of my lif—”

And you let go of that mouse. You let go of them. Everyone felt a strong gust of wind blow them out of the black screen, and they were transported to their designated places in the character list. Nobody—except for the traveler—remained in any team lineup. You removed everything.

He looked around. Black and grey smoke began to overtake the elemental colors of each designated character screen. Everyone banged on the walls until the void took them, and they became forever motionless. They were mannequins now, thoughtless ragdolls standing still. He banged on the glass, using his 1-star weapon to try and break out, but it was useless.

Eventually, he became just like everyone else. A thoughtless, motionless, abandoned toy that you had played with until you left.

Some of my personal favorite parts and drawings from the Firefight animatic based on @remedyturtles's fic.

I really like the 'characters rotating anime opening'. And I love the symbolism of the twins starting with reaching for each other, only for Leo to limply keep spinning past and drifting away. Would love to have it animated slow and smooth.

This scene is one of my favorite scenes. I'm very happy how the cuts match the music and especially the last drop to shocked Leo.

I like his face, very handsome. I'm not as established with how I draw the rise turtles compared to 2k3 boys, so it was fascinating to see how it'd morph over me drawing them like 100 times in a short period of time. They definitely got more elongated facial shapes and Don a sturdier body build compared to canon (I wanted to emphasize him being a bit blockier compared to Leo).

Reeeeally like Don's pose in this and the overall composition and movement of the shot. Very dynamic and dramatic.

Aaand the money shot #2 All the previews I shared while I was working on the animatic, were ones that I'm very happy with. But this one is very special. I like that someone was able to guess Firefight based only from it, haha.

I'm a big fan of the visual trope of characters turning to gaze at each other meaningfully, conveying things without saying anything. So there's a lot of that in this animatic. I really wanted to get Donnie's expression right, his sorrow and determination, and I'm happy with the result.

Back shots are fun. They can express a lot of emotion while concealing what the character is truly feeling. The drawing of Don grappling fallen Leo is one of my top favorites from the animatic, I just really like how it looks. Overall I like this whole scene a lot.

And of course, THE money shot #1. The culmination of it all. I'm very proud of the animated bits too, but I made them their own post.

Happy The Owl House Anniversary!

Finally i finished this drawing! I thought posting it in honor of the owl house anniversary was just the perfect occasion!

This is after all my favorite episode in the whole series and the one I consider had the most potential!

Making lil Pip glowing was SO HARD but I am honestly so proud of how this all look! The colors, the green accents, the poses, the hair, the composition- I think this is one of my best works tbh ahahaha

Do you have any tips on coming up with pose? I looks at your kids fullbody drawing and im in awe on how you can make different unique pose but still similar concept.

I needed to think about this one, because it’s something I do subconsciously, so thank you for asking such an excellent question!

What I really like doing when I'm drawing poses is capturing something mid-motion, especially mid-sentence.

Because of my hyper-phantasia, I can picture my illustrations in my head, and they're always in motion and with sound, sometimes with smells, etc. Then I take a snapshot of that and try to capture it.

If you prefer to thumbnail or need to have the images laid out before you, I’d suggest filming a short video of yourself doing the pose to feel it out. I do this myself when the image in my head isn’t clear enough! It helps me find out what my body is actually capable of doing.

For example, in this scene, I knew I wanted Dakon, Christie, and Kain to all be looking at Raki, so they had to surround him to fill out the composition.

I wanted a window to bring in a source of light and to give it that noir feel. Since the windowsill isn’t particularly wide, I knew that whoever was sitting there would have to support themselves somehow. So Christie is using her hand and left foot to balance herself (because it’s important to keep a hand free for coffee) and she's the shortest one of the bunch. Thinking about physical stuff like that helps bring physicality to the scene and makes the poses varied by making them function within the physics of the world.

For something like my vampire illustration, where everyone is sitting (or standing), I wanted their poses to reflect who they were and match the composition as well. I used Raki’s more outgoing personality to take up a wider space in the illustration by having him lean across and physically open up with his arm out, and point up at the paintings behind him.

Dakon is more reserved, and I wanted that to be in his pose as well, but without him shrinking away, so he’s leaning on Kain’s chair while supporting his feet, so he’s not that short in the picture.

For Christie, sometimes simple is best, and I felt like she could carry herself by simply standing tall and proud, with the little surprise of the axe in her hand. Dakon and Christie also mirror each other, by facing opposite ways.

Kain’s pose is probably the simplest but most “effective” because it’s so dead-on, symmetrical, and demanding of attention. He wants you to look at him, if that makes sense. So they’re all doing the same thing but in a variety of ways to show personality and to work with the picture itself.

For something like my kids halloween illustration, (or in my comic when they’re all together and walking), I try to focus on their legs never being in the same part of the walk. So Christie and Dakon are at the extremes of the walk, but with opposite legs forward. Kain and Raki are both mid-walk, but one is running and the other is trying to look scary with a lifted leg.

I have a soft spot for mid-conversation faces as well because it brings an image to life when it’s not just >:( or :D all the time (although Kain is 99.9% always :DD). This is an old one, but I think it’s one of the images where I’ve leaned into mid-convo the best. I did it to try and make it more obvious that Dakon is pointing at something or someone he wants to talk more privately about, hence why he’s also leaning into Raki.
