I read most of homestuck at night and thus with audio off but openbound had some of the best background music I've ever heard in any piece of media ever. Fuchsia Ruler is so fucking good I made a Minecraft texture pack that changes Pigstep to Glubstep. It's so good that. Yeah it's just so fucking good. Oh my god.

if anyone’s curious all my infected pictures were taken at requiem cafe in anaheim!! im a frequent customer there and i highly recommend it to literally anyone who can go, the customer service is amazing and its queer owned and queer friendly!! and very neurodivergent friendly too, theres comfortable seating in the tree lounge with enough space to not feel claustrophobic, the lights are always low which makes it easier to avoid sensory overload, theres lots of textures and colors to look at and feel in all the themes, and theres an item shop with stuffed animals that’s generally much quieter than the main area and plays soft animal crossing music. i know some of the staff personally and they love working there and feel confortable there!!! and beyond all that the drinks and food are just SOOO good. the drinks are generally around 5-8 dollars depending on the size and add-ons you get and the food is around 12-16 dollars. everything on the menu is fantasy/gaming themed with some references to popular fandoms like fnaf and danganronpa!! its located just over the freeway from disneyland & the anaheim convention center!! go check it out!!! give them business!!! they’re wonderful!!! they also do frequent events for fandoms you dont see get public attention much. they just had an owl house event in february and before that they had a persona 5 event in the fall, and between that theyve had little events here and there like a halloween party and a scott pilgrim new year’s celebration. they’re having a homestuck event next month with a ticketed (sold out) 4/13 dance party and a ticketed (still open!) 4/20 trickster rave (i will be at that one!) PLEASE GO GIVE THEM BUSINESS THEY ARE SO AWESOME

i cannot understate how much i loved psycholonials. for just. so many reasons. i love when stories reward you for paying attention and understanding their themes. when Z explicitly referred to the sword of damocles at the end i screamed because even though it obviously made so much sense because that IS in large part what its about i couldnt shake the feeling until that moment that maybe i was just like. out of the loop and projecting the stuff *i* know about onto it.

i think the stuff it has to say about power and sensationalism and the relationship between the author, audience, and fiction is . really REALLY good and extremely potent. even if i still cant exactly put my feelings about it into words in a way that is coherent or makes me sound smart yet. i think the stuff it has to say about gender and related social systems was REALLY EXTREMELY good . it obviously wasnt the main focus but i found it genuinely compelling and it contributes to the whole EXTREMELY well. not to drag up old shit again but . holy fuck does hussie have some genuinely great and interesting things to say about gender. iykwim.

hussie remains a MASTER of her craft and reading this only justified that belief further. i know im like genetically predisposed to deeply enjoying all this but . fuck she just hit every fucking beat man!!! the character writing was fucking amazing. no notes. the music was also stellar clark powell knocks it out of the fucking park once again. the fucking flare remix scared the SHIT out of me though god that was so cool. the epilogue(i guess? i dont know what else to call it) almost had me in tears. i knew finishing the game that there was going to be . some kinda twist in trying to redo the ending but. good lord. that was extremely well done. hi zhen i love you zhen.

Like, there's really no competition; this is the best Flash page in the comic thus far. Peak music, peak animation, and absolutely a peak narrative. It tied up mountains of plot threads, providing complete answer to questions we're been asking for literally thousands of pages. It completed over a dozen arcs, both big and small. It made me gasp three times in fourteen minutes. It let Jade become a furry.

11/10, and I'm glad people had as much fun here as I did on New Year's Eve. Happy 2025, and happy Act 6!

Cascade's complete obliteration of the Flash-hosting internet says a lot about huge Homestuck truly was - but I think an even bigger indicator of the comic's success is the fact that Hussie dropped literally thousands of dollars on server upgrades to host the thing. That's not an investment you make unless you're expecting some serious returns.

Hey guys! As a treat, I thought I'd provide some context for this seemingly random line Davepeta gives us in the latest upd8.

So It turns out this is a reference to a catchphrase used by Higurashi: When They Cry character Rika Furude, which is later used in that series' spiritual successor, Umineko: When they Cry. Imagine my surprise when this update dropped right as I was in the middle of writing the first Homestuck article I've posted in years, where I actually talk about some of Umineko's themes!

In Umineko, the line is specifically spoken by the Great Witch of Miracles, Bernkastel, a character who operates very much like an Ultimate Self incarnation of Rika Furude:

But also, if you're looking for something to dig into in between Homestuck^2 updates, Umineko could be a good pick! Especially considering notable Homestuck YouTuber @nezumiva is just wrapping up her stream series where she voice acts the entire series live in a truly spectacular live performance. making it more accessible than ever.

And Umineko and Homestuck share some nearly jarring thematic similarities!

In particular, Umineko's structure lends itself very well to further imagining the Ultimate Self, with some characters existing "outside the game board" and treating the reality of the story as a metaphorical chess set, reusing the pieces that are the main cast--even including alternate piece versions of themselves-- in different ways over and over to tell different versions of the same story, in an effort to uncover the truth at the heart of the tale's mystery.

As I watch it draw to a close through Nezumi, I can also say that Umineko is one of the most heartfelt and moving narratives I've ever read, and has some spectacular musical bangers like Bernkastel's main theme, and several tracks that sound pretty damn Homestucky.

Sorry if someone else has asked this before and I missed it- do you think the books are a good way to read/experience homestuck, or should I commit to trying to do it online? I have a much easier time focusing on print and I think that might be why I haven’t made it very far in the past, but I know they do a lot of really fascinating stuff with the format and I don’t wanna totally disregard that.

you should definitely, definitely read it electronically the first time — there are interactive sections, animated sections, sections with music, sections with gameplay. There are print books but they’re more like items for collectors, they’re out of print, and crucially, even if you could find them, they don’t even reach Homestuck’s halfway point (they stopped making new volumes of the print editions).

the best way to read Homestuck for a first time reader is installing the Unofficial Homestuck Collection (as opposed the official website, which has been broken since the death of shockwave flash) on a computer or laptop or similar. I have it installed on my Steamdeck even.

i totally feel you when you say you get on better with print, i totally get that, but i’m gonna tell you the same (or the reverse) of what i tell people when they ask me if they could read House of Leaves as an ebook: the medium is an absolutely fundamental, foundational part of the art.

if it helps you to read more, try treating it like a videogame instead of a book or comic, and try envisioning yourself as the player of a low-interactivity visual novel; in a way, Homestuck is meant to be viewed through this lens, so i think it helps to encourage yourself to see it that way. The Unofficial Collection actually “unlocks” bonus material as you progress through it by only showing you the extra content after you hit a certain pagecount (so as to not spoil you for anything even conceptually) and it is really, really satisfying to get shown the ‘new’ albums, side comics etc as you penetrate deeper into the comic, so it really feels videogame-y in a way that has helped my workshop’s attendees get on with the comic better.

the other thing i recommend to new readers who find it difficult to stick with it is to try reading some of the dialogue aloud, maybe with a friend who’s already read Homestuck (or another new reader you can rope in on your bullshit) reading the other part; Homestuck is in a sense a play as much as it is a comic/game, and its story is told through dialogue so it really comes alive when performed out loud imo.

as mentioned, i also host a Homestuck new reader workshop which any new reader is welcome to join in on, but we’re currently on hiatus won’t be starting a new class for a little while — but if you were interested, i could write your url down and let you know should it start back up. the group readings really help!

everything about the homestuck stuff is making me really gleeful like. we are so fucking back. and i still cant believe i was shitting on postcanon earlier on twitter and then LITERALLY 2 minutes after i post it, i see homestuck tweet that they updated after three years while going hey the old drama people are gone and we got a new writers union and james roach and beloved big name fans to finish it with james “yall know i just do the music right” “closest contact homestuck official had to the fandom” roach as new director and basically owner of the homestuck ip. and 3 of the people on the team are people im mutuals with, longtime with floralmarsupial, so i know how good they are as creative forces and people. and multiple fans reading the update thought the dialogue was much funnier than the updates before it or even the entirety of postcanon. some homestuck fans dont want anything to do with it, thats how badly postcanon burned the fandom, which is understandable, but this feels a lot bigger than homestuck: beyond canon (previously homestuck^2). being run by people who we feel closer to and more trusting of not to make awful decisions and whose content we know is good because we went to Homestuck High together

i agree with you on the playlists, though. while i'm not the best at music and i think a lot of my takes are pretty modern and not very set in 2009, i think it's really stupid when dave playlists trying to reflect him as a person have two rappers like yung gravy and eminem. i get that people think it's funny and they put it there to try and make it look ironic. when i think of something dave listens to ironically, i think of viper, 60percenthomo, djclent, teejayx6, and lil b. i think we miss his irony schtick by a long mile. dave's mischaracterization in the fandom is horrendous. but that's just my opinion. also, people don't give credit to how cool dave actually is! they make him a lot lamer, which, i mean, he's still lame, but not to that extent.

If WV And PM Have No Fans I Must Be Dead

(page 1032-1039)

The mirroring of Jade (Prospit; dreaming) and Jade (Earth; robot) has been expanded to also mirror PM (Earth; years in the future) and PM??? (Prospit; now) with more identically-composed panels. It is actually a really smooth transition, and I do think that having time to sit between updates makes it easy to keep track of different versions of the same character, where and when they are, and how they can interact. I’ve seen in forum threads that some people have blasted through the first 1000 pages in a day as they discover the story which must feel like a very steep and confusing learning curve (even if it’s technically more accurate for representing the kids’ story, which for them is still a single day).

The imps in John’s house all look similar enough that this could be a fakeout, and this Prospit white chess piece is not PM, but they have the same build and eyes (see above from pages 723, 844 and 1033). Whether or not this is PM, I love their design. The blue/green stripes hippie two piece with matching hat feels like something I would see on a middle aged woman at a music festival who turns out to be the loveliest person I’ve ever met. But back in Homestuck the angle on page 1033 makes it look like PM(?) has boobs which, cmon, they are a bug/chess piece and I’ve never seen a busty chess piece and this is the laziest possible way to indicate a character is female.

I really do love these futuretime folks like WV and PM, I think their story is so interesting. They’re aliens, they’re bugs, they’re chess pieces, they’re video game NPCs, they’re time travelers, they’re irresolute wanderers through the wasteland, they’re the fabric of freedom and democracy and they’re carrying out the orders of a mysterious thirteen year old girl from a different species who lived centuries ago. That’s fascinating, and all their quirks and strangenesses put them in contrast to the kids who – while pretty weird themselves – are fundamentally just humans on the internet, and so are more grounded much easier to relate to then WV and PM.

I don’t know if they are fulfilling time loops or trying to actively change the past, but they seem naturally drawn towards these bunkers, like they instinctively still interface with the video game world after leaving it.

The narrator also talks directly to WV again on page 1036, something they did a lot while WV was commanding John in Act 2 (p.258, for example), though this hasn’t really happened with PM (yet). In fact it better parallels Jade, the character who most often speaks to the player. Today she actually tries to command WV, using several ==> commands in her note – I wonder if he is programmed to respond to these in any context, not just via computer terminal.

But for real, it must be so hard for WV not to eat those tasty greentext envelopes Jade has made him. And Jade absolutely called this right down to the position of the clouds and the fact that PM would be wearing the postal hat. (I guess Jade doesn’t need to feel guilty about causing the bunker to explode if she knows PM will survive, and that has interesting implications for her perspective, if she thinks it’s okay to cause harm in the moment because she definitively knows it won’t have a major, long term impact). But her predictions are eerily specific, not only in their detail, but also in her knowing exactly what guidance WV (Mister Mayor!!) will need to carry out this plan. Her ‘the freedom of your people depends on it’ is a really good way to manipulate WV, as I’m sure she knows he would never neglect his critical mayoral business no matter how tasty the letter is.

So, there’s going to be an important gift exchange, and it might be relevant that this page drops six days before Christmas. These two were on different sides of the Prospit vs Ominous Planet war, but the hearts and spirit of giving in the note suggest a peaceful exchange, two sides transcending a former antagonism. PM reaching for their sword on page 1039 isn’t a good sign, but I’m sure that as soon as they see the mail, the critical mail business will take precedence.

A more dangerous antagonism comes from the mysterious Aimless Renegade, whose gun remains pointed at the other two. I don’t think either WV or PM has noticed them yet. More importantly, has Jade seen them? They’re not mentioned – or warned about – in Jade’s note, and so could be somehow invisible to her powers. This isn’t unheard of; Jade has ‘never had any sort of feeling about [the trolls] or what they want’ (p.1000) and says that ‘if [Bec] wants to be found, he will find [her]’ (p.942), so the trolls and Bec both have some defenses against her. AR could be associated with either the trolls or Bec, or immune for a secret third reason.

Either way, I’m nervous. I like this beautiful WV-PM friendship predicted by Jade’s note, and I don’t want either of them to get blasted with an assault rifle. So whether or not this element has been accounted for by Jade, I’m hoping for some sort of holiday miracle.

Sans and Papyrus are Homestuck trolls.

They have weird and overpowered abilities that break the rules (Sans confirmed, Papyrus implied). The only other monster who broke the rules needed to absorb human souls to do so.

They're explicitly not from around here. They just "showed up one day" and Sans refers to a "we" when examining the time anomaly. Alphys isn't a good enough scientist to be part of the project and Gaster was abstracted from existence, which only leaves Papyrus. Papyrus, for as dumb as he acts in public, knows a lot about Sans' projects, and every time he slips that he might know more, he immediately defaults to much dumber behaviour than usual.

They have weird typing quirks. In fact, they and Gaster are the only ones to explicitly change font when speaking in the entire game.

Why does Sans bleed but Papyrus doesn't? Well, we could claim Papyrus' classpect as Knight of Void, meaning he is protecting himself and Sans with the power of nothingness. It would tie in really well with the fact that he can't become a real knight no matter how hard he tries, so he had to pull his knight persona out of nowhere. Papyrus would also be the Prospit player while Sans is the Derse player.

What about Sans' classpect? What about it? It's obviously Witch of Time, bending the rules of what it means to be a Time player as well as making active moves to subtly change the trajectory of the timeline so that you can never canonically wander into certain parts of the Underground like Ruins City, Waterfall City, Hotland City, or the streets of New Home City, or truly permaban everyone in the Underground from the Minecraft server IRL. Teleporting you and him through the world can be like moving the two of you through different points in time, and since Witches can bend and break the rules, they can access the "Space" side of SpaceTime, like how Jade was able to access a token small amount of Time powers due to being a Witch of Space.

If they're trolls and Sans' blood colour is red, what is Papyrus' blood colour? It's probably either teal or cerulean, most likely teal. Sans' blood (assuming it's not ketchup) is red even though his jacket is cerulean. You see, if you put both of their favourite colours together, and hue-shift them until Sans' jacket turns red, you will see that Papyrus' boots, gloves, and cape turn a bright cyannish-teal. Which means Papyrus has to be a tealblood if Sans is a redblood. This is a clear reference to Karezi, which would obviously implicate them as being Karkat and Terezi's ectobiological descendants.

Why are they skeletons when god tiers still die when they take too much damage? Well, have you ever heard of Ideal Self Theory? This theory gathers together a bunch of small things about Dream Selves and God Tier that heavily imply that the body you take on every time you have a Neutral Death in your God Tier form will match the body you consider ideal for that point in your life. It's entirely possible that Sans and Papyrus were perfectly normal Homestuck trolls for the first few time loops, but then used God Tier Shenanigans to turn into skeletons in order to blend in. It's also possible that Papyrus is currently putting a glamour on both of them, which is a physical appearance that isn't really there. A void identity.

Where are their horns? Read above. It's either god tier death shenanigans or glamour shenanigans. Pick your poison.

Why Homestuck? Because Megalovania. Toby did a LOT of music work for Homestuck, and Megalovania ties both settings together. Sans can't be Ness because Undertale is already an expy of Earthbound with extra steps, making Sans into Ness would just be gratuitous at that point. Which leaves the other media he stuck Megalovania into being Homestuck, and as yet, the Homestuck references in Undertale are far less than the Earthbound ones. The closest we get is differently-coloured human souls might be a stand-in for troll blood colours and the Amalgamates being a stand-in for ectobiology mutants, but that's a stretch for obvious reasons. Sans' leitmotif is technically "sans." with his battle theme being "song that might play when you fight sans" and Papyrus' leitmotif is technically "Nyeh Heh Heh" with his battle theme being "Bonetrousle", but Sans' theme changes to his geno-theme "Megalovania" if the chips are down and nothing else matters. This would implicate Papyrus' geno-theme to be "Megalo Strike Back" if the shoe ended up on the other foot.

Why did you do this? I was bored and wanted to make an out-of-pocket theory that connects Undertale to Homestuck via the genius of Toby Fox. If you scrolled this far and thought I was being serious, I urge you to read Point 6 again and see if you still think this is serious.

HOMESTUCK: BEYOND CANON 6/12 NEWS POST

Hi, James here. Happy American Karkat day. European Karkat day, of course, being on the 6th of December. That’s how birthdays work. Don’t look it up.

Some of you may have noticed I am going to be on a stream with a “Virtual Tuber.” Depending on when exactly this goes up, that might actually be going on right now. If you are coming from over there it is very likely you are just now learning we are still doing Homestuck in 2024. Welcome back. You missed a lot but don’t look any of that up either.

What news for the birthday boy? As you may have seen across various platforms we’re partnering with Makeship, and launched a petition for a Highly Marketable Karkat Vantas Plush! The way this works is, they gauge interest by seeing if we can get 200 people to pledge they’ll buy it before the company commits to producing anything. Their business model allows them to do this at no up-front cost to us which is good because it takes a lot of money to manufacture and ship things. Once we reach our initial goal they then move forward with production and do design revisions, prototyping, etc. They send us a little sample and once we’re all approved and on the same page they do a limited pre-order run. For the first 399 pre-orders we get a 10 percent revenue share, which then changes to 30 percent once it hits 400. You might be thinking “Hey man, that's not very much!” and you’d be right, but they cover all manufacturing and fulfillment and shipping costs. And I don’t own a warehouse. So. This is fine with me.

I did promise to try and be more transparent with what's going on behind the scenes, even when it is boring. The thought process here is that, while less lucrative overall than producing and shipping ourselves this will allow us to try out more merch options. We’ve designed some apparel, and are working out something with Andrew and the usual merch guys. This might take a while, I am still new to this. That Vinyl is still on the back burner as we wait for a few holdouts that sort of make or break things. (There are people who are notoriously hard to get in contact with, so it is taking a while and I overestimated my ability to get this done in a timely manner while in poor health. That's on me.)

The whole idea here is to get you guys some cool stuff, and to pay my team more. Right now the Patreon is doing alright, and we’re trying out some new exclusives over there. Music previews, merch previews, and things like that for paying members. Nothing required to enjoy the comic, and things people will all see eventually. Since I’m trying to pay my team as fairly as possible I split everything we make evenly. Right now, for each team member it comes out to a few hundred bucks each per month which is pretty nice for getting to work on Homestuck, but isn’t exactly a liveable wage. And you see how much work they put into it. I want to give them the world, short of that at the very least a fair wage for all the work they do. Also I don’t know if you’ve noticed but a sandwich costs $19 now for some reason. That in mind if you are a company or private individual and want to pay me to promote your product let's talk. We can work something out. I will put it in Homestuck. I will make Rose Lalonde say she loves the bold refreshing taste of Diet Mtn Dew G’raha Tia Blast. I am not joking. This is my solemn vow. Maybe it's time to bring back the “Your Fantroll Gets Put In Homestuck” deal.

Anyway, two updates this month. I Like this schedule, so it looks like we’ll be keeping it up for the near future.
