Jou's duel with Keith is really like... looking through a mirror darkly. They both use gambling cards. Keith is American, Jou is likely half (given his naturally blond hair). Keith at one point talks about being in such a dark place that you have to learn to enjoy being horrible just to survive it, and Jou was in a gang where he did the exact same thing.

Basically the duel is so interesting to me because Keith is kind of a What Could Have Been (negative) for Jou if he hadn't become friends with Yugi, and the parallels are delightful.

this probably sounds fuckin stupid but the amount of people i've seen recently arguing that they should get to smoke [weed in particular] everywhere and everywhere and that anyone who disagrees is some weird puritan pisses me the fuck off

like, guys. i get being frustrated about weed not being legal / some people having genuinely stupid opinions about it. however i also think that... yknow... no-smoking areas should still exist? especially in enclosed spaces like busses and trains? because being in public is a two-way transaction and you still have to be considerate of other people, contrary to popular tumblr belief? with smoking in particular since second-hand smoke exists and actively harms people, especially the millions of people with the thousands of health issues that are directly and severely affected by smoke exposure?

i genuinely don't care if you use weed, it's cool i guess and should be legal regardless both because fuck the cops, you can do whatever you want with your body forever and having the safe routes to both using and quitting legallisation provides is incredibly important! however i'd like to continue being able to do things like 'breathe' and 'not get severe thyroid flareups or damage my already quite severely secondhand smoke damaged lungs even further' whenever i leave the house, please?

My enjoyment for nocturne season 2 was so severely held back by feeling like they did Olrox so dirty this season. Like I found his storyline and character in s1 to be extremely interesting and a great setup for season 2, but it feels like he was so pushed out of the narrative this season and lacked a lot of the subtext related to the themes around him that were present in s1. He just isn't having substantial moments that build on what was set up previously and I feel like the only context he really existed in this season was related to mizrak when his position in the erzebet/sekhmet storyline was also SO IMPORTANT/INTERESTING.

Like yes he had moments that were related to it but they didn't feel nearly as impactful as the s1 scenes, and overall Olrox simply didn't interact with other characters enough or even have interesting scenes on his own. Not to mention even in the scenes with him and Mizrak I felt like there really wasn't substantial progression or an arc building off of season 1 either, which overall made me feel disappointed at them not doing anything interesting with what they set up in the s1 ending. And that just made the s2 ending with him and mizrak in the last episode feel so insulting.

When you take in the entire situation I think an argument can be made for either or both. I've seen the argument that it could be Uryu to Ichigo because of the wording in JPN, but I've never agreed with that take. Ichigo shares pivotal moments with Zangetsu in the HM arc so I get why some people believe it's about his powers, but given how chapter 423 ends, I actually do think it's about Rukia-she's the one he shares the emotional goodbye with (which was pretty much akin to death), not Zangetsu and we know from what Kubo has written in an earlier arc that the one who changed his world is Rukia so the poem being written for their bond makes sense. I feel that most of the arguments against Rukia expose how a person views this line-inherently romantic/reveals how they actually view platonic relationships in media (as in there's a line that shouldn't be crossed between a woman/man which I don't agree with especially in the case of Ichigo/Rukia, considering what Kubo has said about them.)

So, as someone who grew up in North America but did not grow up in the American School system, I can offer some insight.

It's not about what was taught and what wasn't. It's about the attitude that's either encouraged or discouraged. It's about whether kids are/were motivated to learn, to express interest in things, to ask questions, and most importantly: to question why/how things work the way they do.

If you raise kids with an education that says, "these are the facts, pledge to the flag, go America we're the greatest, stop asking questions and listen to what your teachers say", then yeah, you're gonna end up with generations of adults who struggle with critical thinking skills. They're not dumb they just don't find it easy to question things, to ask why things work, to look up things they don't know. Some of them will succeed regardless because whatever it was they had in them didn't get crushed down enough, but it's not always the fault of the others if they don't.

I grew up in a cult. As a result of that, I was homeschooled K-12, never set foot inside a school either public or private. When I asked my mother questions, I got told to pray on it, to shut up and listen, or sometimes I had books thrown at my head. Obviously not the situation most American kids experience, but I was 18 years old the first time I commented on something with interest and someone said to me, "you have Wikipedia on your [electronic device] Why don't you look it up right now?" And I went, well shit. Yeah, I do. And I will.

And every day since that day, when I don't know something, I look it up. This has gotten me a reputation as a bit of a know it all, some of my coworkers think I know enough off the top of my head to be on Jeopardy (they're wrong I'm just really fast at internet searches and filtering out bad results). All that because someone I looked up to and respected said to me that I didn't need to rely on my own lack of knowledge, that I had the tools to expand it myself.

That was over a decade ago. I'm in my 30s now, and I still have moments where I go, "holy shit I can't believe I never questioned that before." I still struggle sometimes with the instinct to just go "oh well" when I don't know something. Asking questions is hard. Admitting you don't know stuff isn't always easy.

The internet has gotten a lot worse since. There's adverts everywhere. Most results are garbage; and it's gotten harder and harder for people to learn to filter through and learn things if they don't already have a basis for understanding something. Kids aren't being taught how to do basic computer things anymore - do you really think they're being taught to figure out what sources to trust? And if they're not being taught these things, if they try themselves, they're gonna hit roadblocks. They're gonna be confused and feel defeated and feel dumb which will only perpetuate the cycle of not bothering to look things up because they're not gonna understand it anyway.

The moral of this is that it isn't about what knowledge isn't being taught in American schools it's about the fact that people aren't being taught crucial life skills, the drive for knowledge isn't being cultivated, and most of their ability to question is slowly stamped out until it doesn't even occur to them to HAVE a question in the first place.

It's up to individuals to decide they're going to do better no matter what it takes, but yeah, they can blame their school system for setting them up for failure. America sucks in a lot of ways and part of that is how bad the school systems are and how little they encourage people to do anything but become exhausted wage workers who don't have the energy at the end of the day to question anything because they're working too many jobs just to make ends meet.

Perhaps any of those bookbinding hobbyists might want to try to go pro and pair up with an artist to refurbish something well enough to hook the really rich art snobs into buying unique, custom pieces for a fuckton of money.
