Finished Defiant
And Oooh boy was it great. And yeah this along with the secret projects confirms that Sanderson can still put out bangers. Like, not gonna lie, Cytonic, The Lost Metal, and to a lesser extent, Rhythm of War all had parts that I either didn't like or just had sections that dragged. Not saying that their stinkers but I do feel like the books mentioned above didn't hit the right notes.
However Defiant was great Spensa development and maturity were perfect in this. I like how Sanderson continues to subvert certain groups without ruining the series. Also, I loved the side characters; they get their time to shine, and we get that connection with them as well, which was missing in Cytonic. Honestly, this was a stronger series than Reckoners.

Sanderson was crystal clear when he said to not gatekeep this fandom. No one needs to prove their knowledge of realmatic theory to belong. From the man himself: do not gatekeep, everyone belongs, everyone is welcome.

love how enamored Brandon Sanderson is with the stars. if i had a nickel for every time Sanderson made a world in which the night sky is always obscured so the protagonists could have a spiritual moment of glimpsing the stars and seeing the majesty of the sky I'd have two nickels
Mistborn and Skyward are also tapping into the same themes, the first view of the sky symbolizing the protagonist's world of possibility opening up
maybe this is what growing up in Utah does to a mf

I'm trying out Clip Studio Paint and have also been listening to Skyward again, so I gave Spensa a go.
(I really like Brandon Sanderson's books, and I want to do more of my personal interpretations of the characters, I already did a few Stormlight Archive sketches a couple years back that I shjould share at some point)

Brandon Sanderson: Fantasy vs. Sci-Fi
Tumblr media
Almost all of BrandoSando's books straddle the line between the two genres, and after seeing @approximateknowledge's post here, I wondered how they would lay out on that chart. I was also inspired by this fascinating WOB about Skyward's genre. These are just my opinions, so let me know if you agree or what you think you'd change!

Cytonic and The Lost Metal
It's interesting (if irrelevant) that these two books have almost opposing themes and villains. Like both the Delvers and the Superiority are a force for conformity. And Spensa's only form of resistance is being an individual and unique, the thing the delvers hate. Meanwhile, in the Lost Metal, Trell is a force for individuality. And Trell, in some aspect, wants to 'free' people. The city in that book reflects that by having some uniqueness to them. I don't really have a point to this; I think it's just interesting that these two are opposite of each other.

Your DnD Alignment based on your Brandon Sanderson starting point
Tumblr media
Lawful Good – Tress of the Emerald Sea, You took Brandon at his word when he said that the Kickstarter books would be good starting point for the Cosmere.
Lawful Neutral – Wheel of Time, you found Brandon when he finished Wheel of Time and decided to give his own books a shot.
Lawful Evil – Rithmatist, this is your villain origin story tbh
Neutral Good – Elantris, you’ve been a fan for a long time,
True Neutral – Mistborn, you started where everyone recommends
Neutral Evil – Warbreaker, get it?
Chaotic Good – Alcatraz/Skyward, wild children of the fandom
Chaotic Neutral – The Way of Kings, despite everyone and their mother telling you to not start here, you do it anyways
Chaotic Evil – Alloy of Law, despite this being in Mistborn ERA 2 and the FOURTH Mistborn book, you still start here.
Reckoners, you like superheroes? Idk
