Reviews 004: Benaji Lattu / Tinopiras / DJ Pippi / Dane Taylor

The fantastic Sent in Sound 12″ finally dropped and is wondrous piece of raga & prog ambience and cocktail balearica. I was eagerly awaiting this one for many months and it does not disappoint. As well, I review DJ Pippi’s Bocadillos Variados and the Dane Taylor single “Let’s Float”.

Benaji Lattu / Tinopiras - Sent in Sound (Point Loma Recordings, 2018) This mysterious 12” starts off with the 27-minute raga bliss of Benaji Lattu’s “Doving. Layers of deep and constant drones wrap around stand-up bass and lonely sitar soloing. The whole thing feels like Miles’ “He Loved Him Madly” gone Indian classical, and there are even shades of the more melodic sides of Pelt and the occult swedish collective Råd Kjetil & the Loving Eye of God. Fuzzed out guitar enters over building hand percussion and backwards electronic textures only to drop into classical raga throat singing floating at peace over the blissful ambiance of the beat and pads. As the vocals fade, the drums come in louder, with synth textures and throat singing, then giving way to a super slow progfunk groove and acid fried guitar solo’ing. At the end, the jam recedes, leaving us drifting into an emotional vocal coda. Up next is Tinopiras’ “Skylover Tea”, with a tight loungey beat, electric pianos, and a hazey late night jazz feel with Morricone-soaring angelic choirs. We build to soaring synth solos and orchestral strings. Sounds remarkably like and is possible a stealth re-edi/re-mix of Floating Points’ “Silhouettes” from Elaenia. (Discogs suggests a well known Italian duo…Leo Mas & Fabrice maybe?)

DJ Pippi - Bocadillos Variados (Music for Dreams, 2016) Though DJ Pippi has been on the White Isle scene since at least the early 80s, as far as I know this is his first album length offering. And the music on the 2xLP lives up to the legendary status of its creator. The hits come early and quick, with highlight “Crystal Palpita” dropping a slightly dark break, moody bassline, sea-shanty accordion refrains, and sunset synths, all evoking a humid mediterranean night. Elsewhere, the two collaborations with Tuccinelli shine: “Make U Smile” is loungey exotica featuring aquatic steel drums, string synths, and a beat poetry-esque spoken word piece. And “Artificial Soul” builds off a downbeat tribal house rhythm, adventurous bass, melancholic acoustic guitar, smokey electric piano and clusters of accordion ambiance. Another highlight is “Windchime” as it combines 90’s progressive synths, floating angelic vocals loops, chilled out jazzy funk rhythms, new-age piano, and a trancey drop out with cut-up vocal samples. The rest of the double album travels through Chic-y guitar funk, echo guitar-led reggae, and dubby R&B…a true Ibizan journey.

Dane Taylor - Let’s Float (Über, 2016) Dane Taylor, of the excellent Shining Birds, wastes no time hooking you into the narcotic pop of “Let’s Float”. The song is anchored by a breezy, tropical synth sequence that soars in to great effect on each chorus. The vocals are deep and warm and spacey guitar leads bathe everything in a comforting radiance. We eventually drop out into an ambient middle section, featuring a NASA-themed voice over and some tasteful saxophone, building back up to a spectacularly catchy finish. The B-side finds Sun Lounge favorites Leo Mas & Fabrice presenting their “Balearic Deep Militant Mix”. These two have a knack for slowing a song down to an almost awkward tempo, just above too slow, but it totally works and achieves a trance-like effect. The vocals are excised completely and focus is given to glowing synth sequences, cavernously reverbed and fuzzed out leads, dubby percussive effects, and ambient drop outs.
