Audio Drama Sunday 8/18/2024
There was so much new stuff this week. Midnight Burger, Worlds Beyond Number, World Gone Wrong, and Wanderer's Journal all release an episode every other Tuesday, and this Tuesday was that day. Then on Wednesday 3 actual play released new episodes. I didn't actually get through everything new this week, the rest will come next week.
NEW SHOW ALERT Starwhal: Odyssey, a spelljammer-inspired actual play from the cast of Skyjacks Couriers Call, is no longer Patreon exclusive! I really liked the first 2 episodes of this show, I love the way these people do collaborative storytelling. The little things like the rent collections robot and the streaming rat were so good. At the end of the episode, the mental vision of Saach teleporting into the gamer chair was so vivid. Also, I've never heard more revulsion in a credits sequence than them crediting Wizards of the Coast for the Spelljammer setting. I'm curious about the system they're going to move to for the later episodes.
In @midnightburgr I love the new set of characters, I bet the next spinoff series going to be the Paradise. However, they can’t keep ending episodes like this. I’ve never been happier to hear the sound of the diner jumping, but Ava and the Mucklewains are gone. At least this time Ava isn't totally alone in a jerry rigged space suit. And David is joining the main cast, at least for the rest of the season!
So much happens in every @worldsbeyondpod episode, and this one had even more than most. The audio design for the opening scene goes so hard, Taylor does such an incredible job. When listening to other APs, I can't help but compare them to WBN. The King of Night loredrop was insane, Orima is apparently sworn to him? I like how the core conflict - Witches and Spirits vs Wizards - is designed to create tension and strife between the PCs. I love the intrigue of this arc so much, but Ame lying to the coven was such a massive misstep. I still think my favorite part of the show might be whenever Suvi uses identify on something plot relevant. The smell of soap from Ursulon was so mean by Brennan, callbacks to the Children's Adventure like that always break me.
I didn’t realize the new season of @storiesfromylelmore was starting already, when I saw it pop up in my feed I went to bed early to go listen to it. Despite what Keryth says, her moms are super cool. Can't wait to learn more about them. Keryth’s parents giving her a magic item to make her quiet reminds me of a lot of my childhood. What my mom wouldn't have given for a silence bubble spell. There was so much worldbuilding in this episode, the quote “I don’t know what they do with them, but I think it’s better if they don’t have pieces of you” was terrifying. The final scene of the episode created such a vivid mental image, I could see the three of them in the backseat.
I also listened to ItMe's other show besides Ylelmore and InCo, Of Gods and Lanterns. It was short but sweet, with a total runtime of less than 30 minutes runtime. I really like the world, I would listen to 100 more episodes of this show.
I listened to parts 3 and 4 of the Spout Lore Critshow crossover. The Spout Lore cast on earth is so funny. The two shows really mesh so well together, this has to be the most "natural" crossover I've ever listened to.
The new season of Second Fiddles also started this week and woah the ending. I'm guessing that everyone forgot about Tammie, but Linus’s mom was unaffected because she was in the book. IIRC we've only met one character who can erase people memories, and she could only do it to one person at a time, not everyone, so I suspect 4th Wall/Macguffin shenanigans.
I also started The Cryptonaturalist this week. The tone of this show is so unique. I love the narrator. I also very quickly found that this is a perfect podcast to fall asleep to.
This post ended up really long this week. No judgement if people don't want to read the whole thing. Next week will be a lot shorter I think.

fhjy ep 18- i’ve listened to 80-some episodes of skyjacks, that’s so many episodes of flying sky pirates (corsairs!) zac’s airitime joke is simply old news to me

After Rackstraw’s death, his former lawyer, Dennis Roberts, insisted: “He’s not DB Cooper.” Yet bizarrely, the attorney claimed that Rackstraw was responsible for another unsolved skyjack, which was supposedly why he never sued anyone accusing him of being Cooper. “It would have meant that he would have had to admit the second hijack,” said Roberts.
At the very least, enough US Army parachutists working as CIA hatchet men have committed *enough* skyjackings that we may or may not have found one while looking for DB Cooper if it isn't Cooper himself.
Which I think is close enough.
I have unfortunately developed the most insane DB Cooper theory that I haven't seen floated anywhere else.
Take the following single piece of information and go insane: a couple years before the DB Cooper case, the CIA started carrying out tests to see how effectively a person could parachute out of a 727.
They wanted to know whether it was feasible to use the 727, which was uniquely capable because of its rear airstairs and engine configuration, to clandestinely parachute agents into enemy states, since it was a commercial airliner. Cooper knew about local airbases in Seattle, knew what settings to put the 727 into in order to keep steady flight with the airstairs open, and, when the airline during negotiations said it would be dangerous to take off with the airstairs open, he factually stated 'it can be done, do it', something that was only ever proven by previous flight testing. After taking off with the airstairs closed, he displayed knowledge that was not only secret to the public, but to airline crews too; that the airstairs could be opened inflight with an override button near the door. Even the FBI speculated that he might somehow have known about the CIA's operations using it Vietnam.
Anyway, mysterious guy with a suit and tie who went to extreme lengths to remove evidence, who never actually provably had any weapons at all, who was never discovered by the nations largest manhunt in history. Weird that his stuff was tied up with his nation's intelligence agency lmao.

I collected most of my favorite “I’m a different bird” moments from episode 18 and it got very long.
Butler: Do you have an invitation?
Gable: Yes. We don't have the bird. He flew away. So it's that. That's fine.
Butler: That's no matter.
Gable: Okay.
Travis [currently a white raven]: I'm a different bird.
Butler: Oh! You've done very well.
Gable nervously: Thank you. ... Jonnit: Are we going to be sharing this lift ride with anybody else?
Butler: No. This will be a private lift.
Jonnit: Great. Thank you.
Travis: I'm a different bird.
Butler: Again...remarkable!
Gable: We've put a lot of training into the bird, and it's...really paying off. … Travis: Okay, this is it. It's all you. And remember, while we're in there, I'm a different bird.
Jonnit: Well, just real quick, the guy downstairs kind of made it seem like the Broker would be impressed by you specifically, Travis.
Travis: Well, who wouldn't be? … Dref: Look, if we have an opportunity to sell Travis to the Broker, let's take it.
Gable: Oh, absolutely. 100%.
Travis: Well, I'm a different bird. … Johnny: Travis flies to the door and pecks at it to knock on it.
Gable: No, we—we—what rate are we looking for per yard?!
Travis: I'm a different bird! … The Broker: I'm gonna charge you 40%.
Gable: 40%? That's a joke, right?
The Broker: Oh, no, I'm quite serious.
Travis clears his throat: I...am a different bird.
The Broker: Oh! Oh, wow! I thought it was just for show! Are you a trainer?
Gable: Uh, yes? This is...this is...Caramel.
Travis indignantly: I'm a different bird!
Gable: This is Caramel. I raised it from a little baby.
The Broker: That voice is spectacular. Most ravens sound like the devil.
Gable: Yes. We've worked very hard, and boy, we sure love it when Caramel talks. … The Broker: Apparently, whoever bribed the customs agent when they docked their ship didn't pay quite enough to keep them silent about whose ship was here.
Gable: Ha, sounds like someone was very cheap!
Travis dismissively: I'm a different bird.
The Broker: Really, just a fabulous job training that bird. So impressive. … Dref: We accept your terms.
The Broker: This is lovely.
Dref: But know wh-who it is that you are making a deal with. This is Captain Orimar Vale. Th-th-th-this is the man who, who took down the Civility. This is a d-d-dangerous man.
Johnny: I fly onto the Broker's shoulder, and I just go up to his ear.
Travis whispering: I'm...a different bird.
The Broker: Oh, I would love it if you would just say that again.
Johnny: I fly right back.
Gable: Do you want to buy him? Because Caramel is really—
Travis indignantly: I am a different bird!
The Broker: Oh, is this bird for sale?
Travis warning: I'm a different bird.
Gable: Depends on the rate, you know
Jonnit: Yeah, how many percentage points are you trying to knock off on our featherweave?
The Broker: Oh, I couldn't take percentage points off. I would be willing to offer 500 single-stamp gold pieces.
Gable: Wow, that's a great deal! Here's what we'll do. We will go back, and I'll teach Caramel a few tricks. If you can get that up to 600, we'll make sure that he can tie your shoes.
The Broker: Ooh, 600. Ooh, that might be out of my range. It is a very fascinating color, and so well trained.
Gable: So well trained.
The Broker: I have to say, that was a very dramatic moment for that bird to land on my shoulder, for sure.
Gable: Yes. Absolutely.
Dref: Unfortunately, the bird is a p-p-personal f-favorite of the captain's and is not for sale.
The Broker: Oh, of course.
Gable: I forget. I'm sorry. Sorry about that. … The Broker: The race is going to be very soon, but it's a three-day affair. The first day will obviously be the race. After that, there will be a show, where you will just show off fine specimens.
Gable: Is there anything that I could enter Caramel into? I do so adore showing him off.
The Broker: Well, I think Caramel, as long as they're also talented with agility work, will do well in the talent portion. … The Broker: And I'm about to have to kick you out now because I've already devoted too much time, but I'm so enthusiastic to meet Orimar Vale and his fabulous bird. And of course, all of the rest of you.
Gable: All right. There any other questions?
Travis: Ummm...I'm a different bird?
The Broker: Oh, it can say 'um', too?
Gable: Yes, we've been working on 'um'. Okay, thank you so much!
The Broker: Very fascinating. It's been lovely meeting you all.
Gable: Okay. Goodbye. … Travis: Well, now, that wasn't so bad.
Gable: You! I will kill you. I will—
Travis: I would love to see you try. Then who's going to enter the pageant, hmm?
Gable: The pageant! We have to—ugh!
Travis: I'm a showbird now! … Jonnit: Well, I mean, this Hildred person is three-time champ for probably a reason. I mean, what's it going to take to usurp her?
Travis: Probably... a different bird.

Skyjacks 165 reactions & thoughts let’s gooo
“this very much reflects the scene that we saw when Dref passed away the first time” said like Dref is going to come back to life just to die again.
Jonnit :((((( poor boy just wanted to have a birthday with his family. :(( i would say give him a beach day but that didn’t go to well last time either
someone 👀 who has medical knowledge 👀 huh?? 👀 👀 👀 I thought they were going to find Dref boy was I wrong
18:24 THE WAY I FROZE EXCUSE ME WHOMST???
the music deteriorating was terribly unnerving.
I was right to be unnerved.
the Forest Queen must have been playing around with them courier kids bc holy shit this is horrifying
“Gable you’re hiding from The Morning Star right now.” 👁️ 👄 👁️
The Morning Star continues their march toward ✨ antagonist territory ✨
I don’t think I’ve said how much I adore Nathan’s narrative play style but it’s incredible and poetic at times. Love it
I hope when they meet The Forest Queen Orimar is still in Travis’s body and it ends up being a whole goof
We’re only 2 episodes in and this is the most excited I’ve been for an arc in a while!!!! Everything is terrifying and nothing is safe! Good times!!!
#campaign skyjacks#skyjacks#skyjacks spoilers#jessie talks#I do hope they don’t get caught up with their own antagonists and push back meeting with FQ by like 10 epsiodes#the pace in CC when the kids got lost in the Forest Queen’s Forest was perfect and I hope this is closer to that#mostly bc they’re facing past battles and we know how it’s going to turn out#Facing Past Antagonists is cool narratively but I highly doubt it’ll yield any actual stakes for the PCs#there haven’t really been stakes for the characters for a while#and i hope The Forest Queen will change that

Birds I don't think James D'amato considered when deciding on the 8.3x larger thing for calculating griffin size in Skyjacks
1. Hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds on earth. The smallest of the hummingbirds is the Bee Hummingbird, 2.25 inches long. As a griffin, it becomes about 18 inches long, comparable to a magpie or a cat (not including tail). They would be incredibly round and colourful. I love them.
2. Puffins
Again, a very round bird. The average puffin is about ten inches tall, so 8.3 times bigger is almost 7 feet tall! And again, incredibly round and friend shaped. This would be my #1 dream bird for a griffin.
3. Woodpecker
Woodpeckers are not silly the way Hummingbirds and Puffins are, but a hairy woodpecker (11 inches) becomes 7 and half feet tall. More importantly, their tongues, which wrap around their skulls for protection and are about a third of their body length, become over two feet long. Woodpeckers can also make holes up to 2 inches wide, scaling that up means potential holes over a foot wide. People IRL find Woodpecker damage to be a problem. I think this should be a bigger deal for folks in Spier.
4. Penguin
The smallest species of penguin, literally called Little Penguin, tops out at 13 inches tall. The largest penguin, the emperor penguin averages 45 inches. Scaling up, Little Penguins are now 9 feet tall, and Emperor Penguins are 31 feet tall! A full sized school bus is 35 feet long, for context. I now think the final fight should be the Mariner vs a Emperor Penguin griffin. My money is on the penguin.
5. Green Heron
The Green Heron is probably the most ridiculous bird on this list: it’s neck retracts. It can be up to 18 inches long, but normally stands closer to 10, with its neck retracted. In griffin terms, that gives us a 7 foot bird that occasionally extends its 5.5 foot neck to reach a full 12.5 foot height. This is like if Gable stood up straight and all of a sudden was taller than a house. Absurd, I want to see it.
6. Flamingo
The tallest species of Flamingo is the Greater Flamingo, normally standing between 3.9 and 4.7 feet tall. This means a griffin is between 32 and 39 feet tall, comparable to the length of a school bus. Flamingos also fly at speeds of up to 40 mph, and in large formations. Imagine a fleet of flying pink busses coming at your skyship. This has killed people.
7. Ostrich.
Ostriches are the largest birds on earth, measuring up to 9.2 feet tall. As a griffin, this gives us a bird 76 feet tall. This is taller than the average spruce tree (50 -75 feet tall), so despite being flightless, you will at least be able to see them coming. Of course, by then, it’s probably too late.
8. Canada Goose
I have spent my entire life being antagonized by these bastards. 0/10 Not a Fan. They can be up to 45 inches long, making a griffin 31 feet long. I refuse to believe these exist in Spier, simply because no one could or should live in a world with 30 foot geese.

Skyjacks asks
I haven’t listened to CC yet, but most of these could still apply! Some questions may include spoilers, but for nothing later than the first arc.
1. Who’s your favourite background crew member?
2. Share a headcanon you feel you’ve never had the chance to share before.
3. Pick a TV show and fill in the roles with Skyjacks characters. What’s your show and who’s who? How does that alter the plot?
4. What’s a scene you can imagine extremely vividly? Describe it.
5. If you could invent a Luminary what would it be?
6. It’s your turn at the audition table! If you could put any character on the Uhuru what would they be like?
7. Cinematically, what do you imagine it looking like in-world when a character draws a Luminary?
8. What relationship would you like to see developed more?
9. Where has been your favourite setting so far and why?
10. Which song from the album is your favourite?
11. What classes do you think the PCs would be in a different ttrpg system?
12. Dref lives AU! At what points do you think this would have majorly impacted the narrative?
13. What is a holiday or tradition (real or invented) that you’d like to see given a Spéir spin?
14. What do you imagine a certain character doing in the epilogue/post campaign?
15. Which folk tale would you like to see re-told as a piece of Spéir folklore, and how would it change?
16. What fanfic would you like to write, if only you had the time?
17. Pick a different character to have Travis’ fun and sexy forest powers. What animals would they turn into?
18. Describe a location you can picture really vividly in your mind.
19. What song, musical or otherwise, can you imagine a character singing? Either because it suits their story or just because you think they’d enjoy The Vibes.
20. Design a funky Spéir animal: go!
Have fun!

my favorite thing right now about Skyjacks: Courier's Call is how intimidating and serious Captain Dennison is, with his gruff voice and no-nonsense attitude, until you remember he's running a ship full of children
the average age of the crew of each audron is like 16, maybe 18 if they count the senior staff, who are basically camp counselors
#like unless i entirely misunderstood the age range of the NPCs which is possible#the season 1 finale was delightful partially for the reminder that like oh YEAH this guy's whole job is training children#serious very important mail carrier duties is the first line on the job description#herding teenagers is the second line#skyjacks#couriers call

hello! might i ask for podcast recs? literally anything ! i trust your taste xxxx
Awwww, you! I’ve kept the descriptions short because there’s a LOT, but I’ve given you genre/vibe because I’m not sure which aspect of my taste you like. Also it’s still very long so sticking it under a cut.
Campaign Podcast: Always my number one rec. Improv comedians play a TTRPG and chaos predictably ensues. There’s two campaigns, Star Wars and Skyjacks, the first one is complete and the second one is ongoing – they have slightly different vibes (think TAZ Balance vs Amnesty, I guess). VERY funny and will occasionally punch you in the heart.
Wooden Overcoats: Very funny, frequently heartwarming, excellent acting. Easy to get through (there’s 3 seasons with ~8 episodes each) and even though the characters are usually very stressed and in ridiculous situations, it feels pretty low stakes to listen to so it’s a fun one for if you’re stressed.
Caravan: Western/fantasy which I don’t think is actually a comedy but is still frequently very funny. Great acting, very fun and relatable protagonist who just keeps on choosing compassion over violence. Thoughtful coverage of mental illness, being brown and queer, and sexy vampires. 18+ but not super smutty and has content warnings.
The Strange Case of Starship Iris: Sci-fi drama about revolution and found family. The plot is pretty serious and involves galaxy-level stakes, but/and the series is very much driven by very well-written and realistic human connection right from the start – it’s very good at making you-the-listener genuinely invested in what happens. Loads of queer characters and the crew has two South Asian women, an East Asian woman, a trans Jewish man, and a nonbinary character. I probably don’t need to tell you this, but the world of popular audio fiction is Pretty White, so it’s nice to see podcasts where that’s not the case esp in genre fiction.
Victoriocity: Drama/comedy set in an alternate universe London. Feels very Discworld – really inventive worldbuilding, fun twisty plot, political intrigue, hilarious deadpan narrator, great acting.
In Strange Woods: Musical about grief, trauma, and how small and powerless humans are compared to nature. Really, really good. You’ll cry. It’s a quick listen – 5 episodes, all less than an hour long.
Oblivity: Sci-fi drama comedy, very funny, very found family. You’ll be surprised how much you care about the characters given how stupid it is.
Alice Isn’t Dead: You’ve probably been recommended this already but it bears repeating. Really well-written, acted and produced. This one’s not got a lot of humour in which isn’t usually my preference, but it’s really good. It’s got a lot of the Something’s Not Right energy of Nightvale, but goes full creepy with it. Really immersive but maybe not one you’d binge or listen to right before bed...
Greater Boston: Drama more than comedy but also deeply funny. Lots of apparently separate stories converging, clever writing (really good at giving a massive cast of characters distinct personalities), really emotionally impactful coverage of topics like grief, racial inequality, addiction, classism and more, doesn’t try to give easy answers but is also very focused on community power and optimism. Also there are cheese robots.
We Fix Space Junk: Sci-fi drama comedy, very anticapitalist, big found family feelings. Lots of fun, job-of-the-week episodic format makes it a relatively low-focus thing, even when the stakes are high it feels very safe to listen to, and the characters are v likeable (even the ones you really wouldn’t have expected).
Girl In Space: Sci-fi drama, found family and revolution, you may be noticing a pattern. It’s a lot of fun, the protagonist is super likeable and draws you in from the start. For Vorkosigan Saga fans, if you liked Shards of Honour, you’ll like this. Deals with fraught parental relationships, grief, loneliness, anti-imperialism, and more, but even though the stakes are high I didn’t find it stressful to listen to.
Death By Dying: Dark surreal drama. I don’t know if I’d call it a comedy per se but it’s very funny. Big Nightvale vibes. Deals with grief and mental illness pretty prominently, but in a very reassuring way.
The Prickwillow Papers: Fantasy drama. Lots of fun and incredible voice acting. Deals with the difficulty of letting yourself be helped, coping with guilt, and not being ‘special’. Features the most cantankerous fae you’ve ever encountered. I love her.
Middle:Below: It has GHOSTS it has CATS it has a PICARDIGAN. What more do you need to know? It’s a lot of fun to listen to, often funny and sometimes genuinely spooky (which hits all the harder for how chilled out and cosy it feels most of the time).
Mabel: Dark fantasy drama. Really poetic, well-acted, really good at suspense. Very cool modern take on changeling/fae mythology. Not much humour and very intense, which is not my thing at all, and I’ll be honest I didn’t find it an easy listen, so it took me a long time to get through it. But it’s really good and it’s definitely worth checking out, I did enjoy it, it’s just not necessarily one you’d want to de-stress to at the end of the day.
The Amelia Project: Drama/comedy about an agency that helps people fake their deaths. Great voice acting, very fun, and I really enjoy how international it is. Uses the episodic ‘client of the week’ format in combination with big picture plot in a really engaging way. Feels a bit Leverage-y especially because of how clever/absurd the plans are.
Harlem Queen: Drama set in the Harlem Renaissance. Another serious one, and deals explicitly with heavy issues including racism and violence, without much reprieve in the form of soft moments or humour. But it’s very well-made and worth a listen, and there’s not a lot of it.
The Orphans: Sci-fi drama. Expansive space opera type show with mindblowing amounts of worldbuilding. Revolution, ethics of cloning, anticapitalist, etc. Not a comedy but has some really funny bits. You’ll need to pay attention especially because it starts off with a pretty big cast of characters who don’t refer to each other by name super often and many of them have similar voices. But don’t worry too much about that – you’ll still know what’s going on even if you can’t tell them apart for the first few episodes, and you’ll be able to tell at least some of them apart.
Midst: I’m only a few episodes in but I’m enjoying it so far! Cool worldbuilding, really interesting collaborative narration/storytelling, not a comedy per se but often funny.
I Am In Eskew: Surreal horror, mostly psychological. It’s another Nightvale-y one but again without really any of the humour. It’s really good, but I’ll be honest, I’ve only listened to about 10 episodes so far, even though I started it ages ago.
….and probably lots more that I’m forgetting? I listen to less stuff at the moment because I’m working pretty much all the time, so anything I need to really focus on or that’s emotionally challenging is p much out of the question.

The Broker: Most of my life is work.
Jonnit: Oh. I'm so sorry to hear that.
The Broker: It's okay. I enjoy my work.
Jonnit: Oh, well then, I'm so happy to hear that.
The Broker: But you can only enjoy work so much.
Jonnit: I'm so sorry to hear that.
Dref: We're just very generally confused by the tone. We're here to sell 1500 yards of featherweave.
The Broker: So I've heard! Please, would you like to tell me how you acquired this featherweave?
Dref: No. But it is stolen.

Actual Play Podcast Recs
Honestly, I’ve listened and/or watched so many hours of them at this point, somebody else should benefit. I love all of these very, very much and don’t really have favorites, so I’m gonna start with the smaller fandoms and work backward.
1. Campaign Podcast (Star Wars/Skyjacks)
System: Star Wars uses Edge of the Empire. Skyjacks uses Genesys.
Medium: Podcast
Status: Campaign: Star Wars (complete); Campaign: Skyjacks (ongoing)
A group of professional Chicago-based improvisers get together to roleplay found families like you’ve never seen. Every character is loveable and clever, even the ones who shouldn’t be (looking at you, Tryst), but the best parts are when they’re all together, bickering. Kat and James do a superb job wrangling groups of players who work hard to make life as difficult for their own PCs as possible. Mostly just shenanigans and heart - so, so much heart. I’ve laughed harder listening to this podcast than almost any other piece of media. Also, nobody in space or on airships is straight.
***The Star Wars game requires little-to-no preexisting Star Wars knowledge to enjoy, which I know because I enjoyed it so much and have maybe seen two of the original movies all the way through.
2. Neoscum
System: Shadowrun
Medium: Podcast
Status: Ongoing
Do I understand the rules of Shadowrun? Absolutely not. Do I enjoy the heck out this podcast anyway? Absolutely YES. I’m still working through the backlog of this one, but I’ve heard it just keeps getting better the longer you listen (and I already like what I’m hearing). Another (equally hilarious) group of Chicago-based improvisers roleplaying found families, but this time it’s a group of criminals driving cross-country in an 18-wheeler named Xanadu to complete jobs against shadowy governments and the companies that run it all. Heists and hijinks. Lots of dirty jokes. Hot demon ladies on motorcycles. What else do you need?
3. Dimension 20 (Fantasy High/Escape from the Bloodkeep/The Unsleeping City)
System: DnD
Medium: YouTube videos, College Humor’s DROPOUT site, and upcoming Twitch livestream
Status: Fantasy High S1 (S1 complete, S2 coming Sept. 2019); Escape from the Bloodkeep (complete); The Unsleeping City (ongoing but I haven’t gotten there yet)
I saw this video of one of the characters continually failing insight checks and asking characters if they’re his dad, and I was sold. Brennan is a truly solid DM who firmly believes in the Rule of Cool, creating badass and ridiculous NPCs, and making his friends cry. I highly recommend starting with Fantasy High, but if you watch Critical Role you might want to start with Escape from the Bloodkeep because Matt plays a gay knock-off Nazgul with an inferiority complex and improbably bad luck who’s trying to bring back the Dark Lord(TM) with a bunch of other ridiculous baddies. Fantasy High is about a bunch of teens with high fantasy powers attending a high school that trains would-be adventurers, and their first big boss battle is against a lunch lady and a monster made of animated creamed corn. Yeah, you heard me: creamed corn.
4. Friends at the Table
System: Oh god, so many. Here is a good list. Generally systems based on Powered by the Apocalypse and Blades in the Dark.
Medium: Podcast
Status: Seasons in Hieron (onoing, but ending in the next few weeks); Counter/WEIGHT (complete); Marielda (complete); Twilight Mirage (complete); Bluff City (Patreon exclusive, S1 complete)
I think Austin (the GM) describes it best at the beginning of each session when he says it’s a podcast about “critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interactions between good friends.” The worldbuilding of FatT is honestly baffling, and they work so hard to make the game inclusive and diverse. Seasons alternate between fantasy games set in Hieron and sci-fi games. Lots of googling dogs, off-mic laughing, mechs, leaning into the failures, gays, and sometimes crying. If part of the joy for you is how much the players obviously love each other, listen to FatT.
Also, shout-out to Jack de Quidt for making the best podcast soundtracks I’ve ever heard. They’re a genius.
Not listed because you probably already know about them but dearly loved: The Adventure Zone and Critical Role
