"We are working on some balance issues and the people on our Discord say..." If you want to sell copies to *new players,* stop listening to the people who are already so committed to your game that they *are on your Discord.* They are so far from the new player experience that they are functionally useless for early game balance. They are useful for late game and endgame balance, but most of your customers are never going to have 100 hours logged in the game. "We looked at our game stats and..." Are most of those stats coming from people with 1000 hours logged? That one guy with 1000 hours is generating as many numbers as 250 players with 4 hours, probably more since he is not staring at the screen for 5 minutes trying to parse all those icons. If you want to know why so many players with <4 hours are leaving negative reviews, it is not helpful to say that balance is fine once you have achieved mastery. Most players will never achieve mastery. If the new player experience sucks, they will not stick around to achieve mastery. The new player experience is the one part of the game that every player will experience, and so many games seem to make most of their decisions based on the post-mastery experience.
I genuinely think, that once you are good enough at something, especially a game, your opinion on its difficulty doesn't matter. I am no exception to this, though in at least a few things i think it is mitigated for various reasons, but ultimately it doesn't matter.
Why?
Because once you've gotten mastery of a system, your perspective is that of someone with system mastery, and so the many moving parts of the system disappear and you only see the whole, only see the parts that you have mastered. I see this all the time. My favourite is discussion of total war warhammer 3, where people with thousands of hours in the total war franchise call it easy because they have figured out all the optimal strategies and perfect little abuses of the systems that trivializes the difficulty and then call the game too easy because it doesn't have a perfect simulation that can match them. the total war series is, by any objective metric, incredibly difficult. Warhammer 3 is very difficult.
They'll outright lie about what happens in the game too, which is another pet peeve, but that's a whole different thing.
Anyways, before you weigh in on the difficulty of something, I think you should ask yourself: "Do I have system mastery? Is my perspective on this reasonable?"
Then do whatever you want. I'm not your mom.

The Power of Purposeful Practice: Become an Expert by Strategic Effort
Researcher Anders Ericsson coined the term “purposeful, deliberate practice” to describe the type of practice that leads to expertise. This specialized form of practice builds the mental representations or “chunks” of knowledge and skills that set experts apart from non-experts. It’s no surprise that experts invest more time honing their craft. For instance, Eleanor Maguire‘s study found that…

"Good" Acting
i have a theory that a lot of people say acting is "good" when they're emotionally moved by it, and a lot of cishet white people have a lifelong habit of not listening or empathising when minoritised people speak, so minority actors get called "bad" even when they display some pretty fucking amazing technical skill
#also a lot of female actors don't get recognised despite being fucking GOOD#that's not to say minority actors can't always be bad#of course we can#I'm just saying#sometimes#for SOME shows in particular#ahem ahem#some actors might get very heavily criticised for reasons that have very little to do with their actual technical skill#and more to do with the politics of those criticising them#also I'm not talking about me here#before anyone says that#I'm talking about some actors I know who have recently been criticised in my opinion quite unfairly#despite doing something very difficult#like oooohhh i dunno#playing two roles in the same show?#and doing it very well#displaying some amazing technical mastery of body and voice technique#but hey what do I know#oh wait I went to drama school and I'm a professional actor lol I DO know#I'm just a woman so I have to couch my expertise in cutesy self-deprecation lest people think I'm a bitch

What skill would you like to master?
I am very much a person that watches art content and often feels like I can learn the thing and do it myself. I collect hobbies, I guess... Of them I would probably like to master embroidery. It can be a bit tedious, but I like doing it, but a master at it I am not.

honestly if there's one thing i can't fault my dad for it's his cooking. that man has no formal training but he's never met a dish he couldn't make and in many cases improve. pity it doesn't reflect his parenting but if he had to spend all his skill points on something he could've picked worse.
#🐉#genuinely jealous of his chefing skills. i can cook but i dont have the unparalleled mastery of it he does.#people would come to our house just for my dads cooking. it was that good.
