Former foster youth who aged out of care, I want you to know about this cool site called Coursera. It allows you to take thousands of online courses for free. (You do have to pay for a certificate or degree, but most of these programs available on this site allow you to preview the entire course material for free).
Some of these courses offer skills to launch a new career and some of these courses are just downright interesting (Roman and Greek mythology hello). They have something for everyone.
The courses are set up in a flexible way so that you complete it at your own pace. Many of the courses that are estimated to take 4 months to complete recommend that you dedicate at least 10 hours a week to studying/working on the course. It is extremely flexible, there is no harsh deadlines - it works well for those who are currently working.
I just honestly love the structure of this website. I've taken a few courses there myself. I love how it's structured to learn at your own pace. Just check it out.

How do you handle leaving a job that you enjoy due to a new opportunity of a higher salary and title upgrade? I often read that you should separate personal from professional, but I really like my colleagues/manager in both manners, they're amazing people and this job was an amazing opportunity for me. How should I say that I'm resigning without bursting into tears?
In my experience, it's important to keep the job at an arm's length - it might be super engaging and satisfying to work with these fantastic people, but a company is still a company - it will always prioritize its own best interests over yours, and those people will tend to choose their own best interests over yours as well. As such, you owe it to yourself to prioritize your own best interests too, including seeking new opportunities to grow and improve, as well as commensurate compensation for that experience. If you stagnate in a situation where you can't grow, you're doing yourself a disservice.
Tumblr media
One way to soften the leaving a job I really like is to tell myself "This isn't forever and I can come back later". If I leave a company on good terms, returning is much much easier. When I went back to a studio that I had left on good terms, the process was super quick - I applied to return, they had an opening for me, and that was it - the only interview questions they asked me were "Do you want to come back?" and "When do you want to start?"
Tumblr media
I've seen a number of coworkers return to various studios I've worked at as well - they're (almost) universally welcomed back with open arms. We know them, we are already good with working with them, we're glad to have a comrade return. Even better, we can return with more responsibility and solve even more interesting problems with people we still know and care about and collect higher pay for my work. You can always take solace in the thought that leaving a team doesn't mean forever, it just means for now.

The Job Portal Advantage: Why Every Job Seeker Needs One
In today's dynamic job market, finding the right job can be a daunting task. The days of scanning newspapers for job listings and sending out paper resumes are long gone. Enter the digital age of job hunting, where job portals have become indispensable tools for job seekers. In this blog, we'll explore the significant advantages of using job portals and why every job seeker should leverage them in their quest for professional success.
Extensive Job Listings
One of the primary advantages of job portals is their vast database of job listings. These platforms aggregate job openings from a wide range of industries and companies, providing job seekers with a diverse selection of opportunities. Whether you're looking for a position in IT, healthcare, marketing, or any other field, job portals have you covered.
Streamlined Search Process
Job portals streamline the job search process significantly. Instead of scouring multiple websites or newspapers, you can use search filters to narrow down your options based on criteria like location, industry, job type, and salary range. This efficiency saves you time and ensures you only see job listings relevant to your interests and qualifications.
Customized Job Alerts
Job portals offer the convenience of setting up job alerts. You can input your preferences, and the portal will notify you of new job listings that match your criteria. This feature ensures that you don't miss out on potential opportunities, even when you're not actively browsing the portal.
Access to Company Insights
Many job portals provide valuable insights into prospective employers. You can read company reviews, view ratings, and gather information about the company's culture, values, and work environment. This knowledge helps you make informed decisions about which organizations align with your career goals and values.
Online Application and Resume Submission
Gone are the days of printing out resumes and mailing them to employers. Job portals allow you to create and submit your resume online. You can tailor your resume to specific job listings and apply with just a few clicks. This digital convenience speeds up the application process and increases your chances of being noticed by recruiters.
Networking Opportunities
Job portals often have built-in networking features. You can connect with professionals in your field, join relevant groups, and participate in discussions. Networking through job portals can lead to valuable connections, mentorship opportunities, and even job referrals.
Interview and Resume Resources
Many job portals offer resources to help job seekers enhance their interview and resume-building skills. From sample interview questions to resume templates, these resources empower you to present yourself effectively to potential employers.
Privacy and Control
Job seekers have control over the information they share on job portals. You can choose what details to include in your profile and who can view it. This level of privacy protection ensures that your job search remains discreet if needed.
Conclusion
In the digital age of job hunting, job portals are invaluable tools for job seekers. Their extensive job listings, streamlined search processes, customized alerts, and networking opportunities make them indispensable for professionals in every industry. If you're on the hunt for a new career opportunity, harness the advantages of job portals to maximize your chances of landing your dream job. Whether you're a recent graduate, a seasoned professional, or someone looking to change careers, job portals are the key to unlocking a world of possibilities in today's competitive job market. Start exploring the job portal advantage today and take the next step towards your career goals.

Hello, I'm an aspiring game developer generalist but I honestly have no clue where to start, and my lack of attention span does not make it any better, do you have any advice on how to start learning to become a generalist?
Tumblr media
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a hobbyist, then I suggest reading my guide on the [minimum competence needed] to be able to contribute to a game development team. Then, start doing each of these things - write code, create art assets, build a level, make something playable. As you learn to do these tasks and level up, you'll become a generalist that's able to make a lot of contributions to a dev team.
Tumblr media
If you want to be a professional generalist, the requirements are much more stringent. Generalists in the game industry really only exist at the upper mid-senior level, there really aren't any junior generalists because the juniors really lack the experience shipping and finishing games. A junior might enter without a specific specialty, but they have a lot of learning to do. It's much easier to learn one major thing at a time than it is to learn many things all at once, especially when the goal is delivering shippable quality results.
Tumblr media
The minimum bar for competence for professional generalists is much higher. A professional generalist isn't someone who knows a little of everything and can get something started, it's someone who can finish a wide variety of tasks. A professional generalist can operate and produce work of shippable quality in multiple areas. I've personally worked on cameras, economy, combat, monetization, characters, AI, progression, animation, cinematics, localization, and lots of other game systems in my career.

Super true. I feel soft skills for your career are undervalued and undertaught, if that is a word. Networking in a non-exploitive way is certainly something people don't automatically know how to do, but would be very useful for anyone to learn as early in their career as possible.
young me especially would have hated hearing this but networking is literally the most important thing you can do to improve your situation like forget economic barriers to education etc just keep making friends with different people and eventually someone will offer you a hand up just because they dig your vibe and that is exactly all that's happening when undeserving people surpass you anyway
