Something a bit different by, I think, most people's standards today with an album centered around sampling. Historically I have been pretty anti-sampling but have in the past few years realized its artistic value a bit more, so I was looking forward to this. Hadn't heard the band at all until a few days ago when Two Hearts in 3/4 Time was linked somewhere and I took a listen. At that point I was already considering listening to an album by the Avalanches, but this cemented the deal.

Definitely enjoyed this, though it took some getting used to. It's honestly incredibly impressive just thinking about what went into this album, and it resulted in this really remarkable final product. What struck me was how cohesive this album was as a whole despite using samples so heavily. As someone who knows little about actually making music, that strikes me as difficult, but then what do I know? At any rate, a great album, though again loses some points because I really wouldn't play these tracks individually much at all, and some of them I straight up wouldn't enjoy in that fashion. As an album, though, it's fantastic. Tracks (or maybe portions?) I enjoyed the most included Stay Another Season, Two Hearts in 3/4 Time, and Frontier Psychiatrist.

They're a group of samplers who made probably my favorite album ever (Since I letti you) and listening to them actually helped me overcome a lot of negative feelings and gave me Hope for the future.

"A miracle of a record, and yet another compelling argument against the sorry state of the copyright systems of the western world. Put this album's attitude of using other artists' material in the context of any other artistic time period, and no one would bat an eye. But, in our postmodern age, the very prospect of repurposing other (non-public-domain) art requires enough courtroom proceedings so as to turn even the strongest willed away; or, turn legitimate cultural contributors into illegal pirates of the state.

Even twenty years on, reissues of Since I Left You have to be continuously altered to remove or replace samples, just to pass legal muster...However, despite this, even in such a neutered state, this album remains a truly stunning work. There are hundreds upon hundreds of samples jammed into these 61 minutes, and each and every one seems to fit perfectly and never feels out of place. It is an avant-garde song cycle featuring obvious experimentation with its samples, but is also completely accessible, thanks to its ingenious hooks and exotica-tinged atmosphere.

It's home to the title track, one of the best songs released by anyone ever, full of freedom and summertime magic yet tinged with the bittersweet repetition of "since I left you...I've found the world so new...". From then on, the listener floats like a lazy river along the party rhythms and goofy soundbites and soft vinyl crackling. Only when "Frontier Psychiatrist" comes on is the vibe broken, but even then, only slightly." - RYM user thekilleruser

Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.

Really did get me in a productive mood, listened at work via spotify session (cute). They kinda remind me of Odesza, but I only have the vaguest memories of what Odesza sound like...

Anyway, the first two tracks worked very well together although some songs ran a bit together (not in a story telling way), not super variable.

Jason being the easiest kid is super funny. Bruce looking at Jason and remembering Dick at 18: “we can work through this. He’ll come around if I don’t give up on.”

Bruce, watching over a freshly street-snatched Jason: Why is he so calm

Having Dick as the rambunctious, feral, and unhinged first child must've given him SO much whiplash once Jason entered the picture. Lil guy just vibed in his own world. Just reading books and doing schoolwork. Baby Jason hurt nobody.

Bruce will just be going over the ground rules of the manor, remembering all the chaos Dick brought upon the household.

Bruce: No swinging from the chandelier.

Jason: ?? I wasn't planning to?

Bruce: No murder.

Jason: What? That never even crossed my mind-

Bruce: And please, for the love of God, don't sneak out and try to beat up the nearest criminal on our block

Jason: WHO is responsible for these rules being created??

Bruce will just come home from a long day of work. He's tired and just wants a nice, quiet evening, but he's subconsciously psyching himself up to prepare himself for the chaos he'll witness once he enters the manor

but then Jason's just quietly doing his own thing, maybe even helping Alfred with some chores, reading, or just lounging about in the manor. In general, just causing no trouble and Bruce just turns to Alfred, all worried like, "Is he sick? I don't think children are supposed to behave this way."
