IMAGINE: the year is 1952 and these are our boys. noteable skaters include terry sawchuk (perhaps the nhl's most bonkers ass off the shits goalie of all time) as well as one of the most famous scoring player combinations, The Production Line (gordie howe / sid abel / ted lindsay)

nhl playoffs were two best-of-seven games series to win the cup, so the red wings needed to win eight games to win the cup (spoiler: they do win) but to support the team, and to represent the eight games necessary to win, two fans (who were brothers & also business owners in eastern market-- detroit's largest outdoors farmer's and grocer's market--) brought a dead octopus into the arena and tossed it onto the ice of olympia arena (which has since been demolished. rip.) for good luck with the series.

and, somehow, either by magic or coincidence or sheer ferocious dedication to their sport, the red wings end up completely shutting out the montreal canadiens during the second 4 game series and winning the cup. (2 games were shutouts, and 2 games only allowed one goal, which in and of itself was record breaking stuff for the league at the time). and then they also won the stanley cup again in the next year as well.

SO SINCE then, the tradition has evolved and grown and the octopus has become an unofficial mascot for the team, while also acting as a good luck token, and also as a martyred sacrifice to invoke the hockey gods' will to change the fate of the red wings when things look dismal, or we need a wholehearted change.

in the late 1990s when the team was a fucking dynasty of unbeatable freaks, the head zamboni driver was in charge of going out onto the ice and collecting the octopi corpses, and in a hyping-up-the-crowd move, he invented the Octopus Twirl wherein he would pick it up and twirl it over his head in a circle, which is objectively very gross and kinda eehhh :-/ by todays standards, but was cool and very fun at the time. so the nhl had to shut it down because there would be little bits of octopi corpse debris scattered and schlopped around the ice and it was technically a danger for the skaters. anyways people loved this bit though and so the unofficial octopus mascot was thusly named Al, after the zamboni driver, and we had this fucking thang ⬇️ that descended down from the ceilings during playoffs just so nobody ever forgot THIS IS FUCKING HOCKEYTOWN BABEEEEYYYYYY

also notably, when the joe louis arena (the team's long term arena after the olympia had been demolished) was next on the chopping block after decades of being the latest winning roster's home away from home, 35 octopi were tossed onto the ice during the last game as a farewell but also a promise that better things would come for the team. since the JLA was demolished tho, the teams luck tanked a lot and we have not been even remotely good for quite a few years due to UM, A LOT OF THINGS, WHICH IS ANOTHER ESSAY I CAN WRITE FOR YOU, but finally the team is getting genuinely competitive and fun to watch again. but regardless of this flop era behavior, there have still definitely been octopi getting tossed onto the ice because well... we love the team despite it all and always want the best for them !

Notes

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.

Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.

Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.

The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.

Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.

Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.

Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.

I've been trying to connect a lot of loose ocs I have together into deans universe or the shock value verse. As I'm hoping to make a project with it if I can see it through lol.

I am going to yap now. Insane lore dump for dean and a few miscellaneous ocs, plans.

Last night I uploaded 36 old one off loose designs I'd doodled up over the last few years to my toyhouse (theyre currently all private unless I end up using them), so I could sort them into a world with the other shockverse, and work out which characters work well. Only rules are it's a mundane modern real life seeming world and all animals have to be real world animals (so my dragons, and snot are out), however in this world lots of secret magics are real, hence how dean became undead.

There's a cult to Cain, the goatlike demonic shadow of the sheep god character now named Abel I designed.

Cain and his cult is who reanimated Dean. Ive decided Sid Silverman, Deans catfish agent and guardian has a tattoo on his chest for this cult of Cain, hes a member. When dean was fatally hit in his accident, he called satanic cult leader bird oc Father Damien, who summoned Cain himself to reanimate him and bring him fame and power in exchange for deans soul. So thats all connected nicely.

Rhys (camel) is his best friend, roomate and somehow unaware of the zombism, Dean fights to keep that the case as rhys is a gossip. Rhys is a very sweet friendly guy, hes literally a light for dean and is always there to help dean out. Deans rival pop princess cowgirl Heather is also there, shes also gonna get a new character im bringing back, a raccoon called Dizzy, whos like a big bubbly party girl but actually sweet unlike heather. They're besties and hang around together and antagonise Dean, but they like Rhys. I also plan on designing a new girl character whos gonna be a hippy chick (im thinking literally a hen) when I get ideas for it, who follows dean around on tour.

And I've got 2 old characters I'm bringing, a skunk who is now a paparazzi/cameraman named James, hes a total weirdo conspiracy nut. and a lion who is now a news anchor called Max Daily, definitelya fake name, he loves gossip, prying into peoples lives and spreading whatever fake news gets views.

Ive never been a lore guy so i hope this is fine. I'm hoping to be able to connect stories and interactions with these characters now i have a more solidified world for them. A LOT of this is wip. But maybe one day I make a few funny lil comic pages? I've never been a good storyteller so please bare with me haha.

Terrible Ted Lindsay, the 5-foot-8, 160-pound tough guy who provided muscle and meanness on the Detroit Red Wings’ famed “Production Line” of the 1950s

Lindsay, nicknamed Terrible Ted, played 17 seasons in the National Hockey League, 14 of them with the Red Wings, coming out of retirement for the final one. He was the first N.H.L. player to play 1,000 games, a first-team All Star eight times and a participant in 11 All-Star games.

In 1950, Lindsay won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s scoring champion; Sid Abel finished second and Gordie Howe third. In all, in 1,068 regular-season games, Lindsay recorded 379 goals and 472 assists for 851 points, making him at the time the highest-scoring left wing.

Bill Chadwick, a Hall of Fame referee, spent many nights trying to keep Lindsay under control. “Ted was a mean hockey player,” Chadwick once said, “but he was the kind of guy I would have wanted to play for me. He’d do anything to get the puck in the net.

Outside (2024)

Think you’ve seen all the zombie genre can offer? Watch Outside and admit you were wrong. More drama-thriller than horror film, this is not a pleasant watch but no movie that deals with its themes could be. There are plenty of nail-biting scenes and the intense scenario will have you all sorts of nervous - whether the undead are on-screen or not.

Civilization has collapsed following a zombie outbreak. The Abel family – Francis (Sid Lucero), his wife Iris (Beauty Gonzalez) and their sons Joshua (Marco Masa) & Lucas (Aiden Tyler Patdu) have escaped the city and arrive at Francis’ childhood home on a sugarcane plantation. They settle in but the parents’ marital problems and the trauma Francis suffered at the hands of his father in the mansion's basement may prove more dangerous than the hungry ghouls outside.

Outside almost didn’t need to be a zombie movie. The living dead are only in a few key scenes. They're more of a reason to keep the characters in one location and to explain why no one can reach out for advice or help rather than a serious threat. You can tell the family went through hell from the bloody stains on their vehicle and haggard appearances but they’ve made it. They’ve escaped. Unfortunately, this disaster hasn’t repaired the state of their marriage. If anything, it’s made everything worse. The love that existed between Francis and Iris is gone. Before the zombie apocalypse, she wanted out and he was campaigning to be king asshole. It’s hard to tell if it’s the childhood trauma, the endless life-threatening situations they went through, the collapsing marriage or a combination that turned Francis into the person he is now but it doesn’t matter. The fact is, Iris, Joshua and Lucas are stuck in this place with him and there’s nowhere else they can go. Things get so bad you firmly start believing they would be better off taking their chances outside. That's scary.

As you might’ve guessed, Outside is not about zombies, it’s about abuse. The more time you spend with Francis, the more you hate him. From the beginning, you felt like there was something off about this guy. The echoes of what his father put him through still give him nightmares. Why stay in THIS home? Why not move somewhere else? What is he trying to prove, and to who? That’s what the movie is about. It’s about piecing together what's wrong with him and what changed in the marriage to make him this way while the background threats get ever closer.

A movie being unpleasant isn’t necessarily enough to drive down its rating, not when the objective of horror films is to unsettle and frighten. The flaws in Outside have more to do with the running time and the ending. While Francis’ slow progression toward quasi-insanity is well-handled and believable, this movie did not need to be 142 minutes long. If anything needed to be trimmed, it was the conclusion, which is occasionally way too bleak – even for this kind of movie – or saccharine. The scenes of redemption are not only unconvincing, they’re unearned.

Outside is well-acted. The relationships are engaging and believable. The scares are a nice blend of fantastic when the zombies are on-screen, and realistic when we see Francis' transformation into an emotionally abusive bully. It may be a tad long but the length allows the character arcs plenty of room to breathe. This would be a great film to acclimate someone who likes thrillers but says they don't like to be scared into the horror genre because the zombie stuff isn't in the movie very much. Sell it to your partner/friend as an emotional thriller that happens to have flesh-eating ghouls thrown in. (October 18, 2024)
