Who Speaks What Language: The Fae Squad Edition
Scott: Speaks Quenya and Sindarin as dual first languages. Is fully fluent in Silvan. Fluent in Mythlandic but has a notable accent and speaks very formally. Decently fluent reader of Pixandrian but his pronunciation sounds like he learned it from books, because he did, and constructing sentences is difficult. His comprehension is much better than his functional vocabulary though he gets caught off guard when words aren't pronounced in a way he thought they were and it throws him off. Can recognize some common Galactic words but just in the basic pattern recognition sense. Only speaks a few basics of Mezalean and none of the Oceanic Dialects. (This results in a distinct lack of overlap in languages he speaks comfortably and languages Jimmy speaks comfortably, which is a surprise tool that will provide us with dramatic tension later ;) )
Xornoth: Speaks Quenya and Sindarin as dual first languages. Is fully fluent in Silvan and Mythlandic. Does have an accent in Mythlandic but it is less strong than Scott's. Does still speak formally but that is less a lack of familiarity with the language in an informal setting and more general social awkwardness. Is actually more comfortable with the Helianthian dialect due to most of their casual interactions being with Pearl. Has their Helianthian trash talk down to a fine point. Has learned a significant amount of an, ahem, specific category of Lost Empire vocabulary via Joey. Can read Galactic fluently against their will. (Thank you, head demon.) Speaks enough Mezalean and Pixandrian and Manual Oceanic to fake their way through formal greetings but no more.
Katherine: Silvan is her first language, fluent in both Quenya and Sindarin. (She and Scott were unofficially pre-engaged at one point before Shit Went Down so they both learned each other's languages. They were also each others only friends at that point so there was that.) Has made it her mission to be able to speak to everyone in their own languages as part of her quest for peace and neutrality. Has mastered Mythlandic, is passingly familiar with the Helianthian dialect. Can hold a basic conversation in Oceanic, substituting her wings for fins on the manual side and her vocal chords are close enough to most Sea Folk that she can manage some of the verbal components that are beyond the other Land Dwellers. Not all of them, but some. Only started learning Swamp Speech and Lost Empire Language recently, is still a bit unfamiliar with them. Fluent in both Pixandrian and Mezalean. Played hooky on her Galactic lessons. Has been learning Gnomish as well. Is maybe focusing a bit more on that language over Swamp and Lost Empire, despite the lack of political gain.
Shrub Berry: Comes from an entire different dimension, is operating at a distinct disadvantage linguistically. Joey and Katherine have been helping her learn Mythlandic, with some basics in both Lost Empire and Silvan. They have both also been learning Gnomish in return, which she appreciates more than words can express. Of the writing systems in the Empires, Mezalean is the one they've had the easiest time with, which has resulted in an interesting mish-mash of languages anytime they have to resort to written communications. Prefers to stick to speaking when possible.

Okay this is my theory about Shelby
Some of this is coherent, some is just word vomit
- Her grandma is Shrub
- That’s the only way I can see this making sense
- We now have a DIRECT link to season 1
- Shelby found the ruined Undergrove??? and had ‘flashbacks’ to the destruction of the gnome homeland
- There’s a sign that says “We’re in here, Shrub”
- Suggesting after leaving to the Nether, Shrub came back
- In the comments she said Shrub isn’t her past life
- She mentions her grandma a lot
- But no parents
- Shelby once said every character she plays will be ace, so no kids
- Except maybe artificial ones????
- Is the Great Witch Acadamy Gem’s wizard school? Maybe one that she made after starting her new life with her brother?
Questions
- Why would she give her ‘creation’ the same name?
- How is she getting flashbacks? I don’t think it can be explained away with just “magic”
- And why the gnome homeland and not the Undergrove?
- Why would she create this new being like her in the first place?

I'm working on drawing all the original Empires Rulers!
I have a lot of thoughts on them and their stories so here's Shrub!
Gem and Fwhip
Lore Ramblings under the Cut!
Shrub Berry is the last surviving gnome. Before she became a survivor, she was a farmer’s daughter, the oldest of 10 children. Her life, before it fell apart, was humble. Shrub’s life was defined by routine. Wake up, help her mother with her youngest siblings, help her father on the farms, have dinner, and start again the next day. She wore clothes lovingly made by her aunts and learned about the local wildlife from her uncles. Her family always preached to her the importance of maintaining nature. To always thank her for her boundless gifts. Shrub was never one to pay attention, often questioning how important a relationship with nature could genuinely be (her mom would always pinch her chubby cheeks while insisting “she would understand one day” whenever she voiced a complaint). Shrub often felt her world was too small for her. She craved a change, and her wish came true when it all fell apart.
Shrub refused to believe that corruption had taken over her lands. She ignored all the signs at first and comforted herself with what was familiar. She built herself a village (a crude copy of her original home) and attempted to practice all the rituals her mother taught her. Gods, how she wished she paid more attention to the small routines of her home life. Shrub attempted to foster a relationship with nature, to cook the meals her siblings loved, and to farm the way her father had. She tried anything to reconnect with her lost culture, to ignore the swelling grief in her heart. Shrub was alone in a world that had become too big for her.
The Wolf Spirit grew up too soon. She was only a teen when she awoke, alone in an empty field. All attempts to replicate her routine had fallen short. What purpose did she have when all she could do was survive? It wasn’t until a wolf appeared at her doorstep, injured, that she would find a new purpose. She helped the wolf regain his strength, naming him after the moon. Lord of the Moon stuck with her, even once he was fully healed. Another wolf would poke its head into Shrub’s forest and Shrub would take care of it. Before she knew it Shrub had attracted an entire pack of wolves. Her respect for them summoned the Mother Wolf, the local spirit of her forest. The wolves became her new family. Despite how happy she was with the wolves, they did not stop the growing grief in her heart. A year after her escape, she finally broke down and allowed herself to grieve. She grieved for her family, her home, and for the fact that she was the last Gnome.
When the tears dried and the sniffles ceased, Shrub looked to the Moon and resolved herself to become stronger. When a familiar corruption came into the lands she refused to stand idly by.  Under the guidance of The Mother Wolf, she trained. She learned the language of the wolves and the language of nature. She carved a wooden mask and sewed rudimentary leather armor. After her hair caught fire while traveling the Nether, she cut it off to prevent further incidents. Shrub was hardly seen around the Empires anymore. Instead, The Wolf Spirit made their name known throughout the kingdoms, stalking the woods with a large pack of wolves behind them. The Wolf Spirit hardly slept, but who needed sleep when her world was in danger again. She would see no rest until Xornoth was punished for what became of her people.

Man Claims Garden Gnome Onslaught
A local man named Gary Numan is making headlines after alleging that he was viciously attacked by his neighbor’s seemingly innocent garden gnomes. According to Gary’s detailed account, the pint-sized porcelain assailants launched a coordinated offensive as he attempted to water his plants in the back yard. The gnomes, known for their stoic presence and pointy hats, reportedly turned into a…

MOS: Specific Breakdown of Language Barriers Between Couples
So I do have the posts on what languages everyone speaks, grouped by Oceanic, WRA, and Fae squad and about 98% of that is still accurate, I just kind of wanted to do a post that summarizes how language plays a role in each marriage/relationship within the AU.
In Chronological Order:
Lizzie & Joel: At the time of their initial marriage they had absolutely zero languages in common. They are one end of the language barrier spectrum. Joel began learning to understand (even if he couldn't really speak) Oceanic out of pure self-preservation. One of the early overtures in their marriage was actually Lizzie chasing down Pixlriffs and demanding he teach her some Mezalean. (Pix has been way more involved in several relationships than he was ever really interested in, send help.) By the time it gets to "current day" they are both fully fluent (within physical capability) in each others' native languages and also share several other languages in common. They absolutely use these powers for evil.
Joey & Xornoth: At the time of first meeting, they didn't have much in common linguistically. Joey was fresh out of isolation with only a few words of Mythlandic that he'd picked up from his first encounters with Fwhip and Xornoth had no knowledge of the language of the Lost Empire. Joey basically force-formed a sort of pidgin of mostly Mythlandic and his own language for them to communicate in, though as time goes on it acquires more Elvish words and structures. He mostly flirts in his own language, which does mean he can get a bit more...graphic in public than he would otherwise be able to be, because most people don't speak it outside the borders of his empire. Xornoth is suffering. They're learning each others languages but also this is a pretty new relationship so they are still very much in the learning stage. Joey does also struggle with Xornoth's accent in particular.
Jimmy & Scott: Technically they have a language in common, as both of them have at least a decent fluency in Mythlandic. However they learned their Mythlandic in very different ways. Scott has learned his entirely from reading books (with occasional help from Xornoth on pronunciation which means some of his words have a bit of a Helianthian twang to them) so he tends towards more formal speech and has a very strong accent on top of that because he hasn't interacted with native speakers and is guessing half the time. Jimmy had a little bit of a formal education in the language when he was small, but most of his fluency comes from border trade, border skirmishes, and yelling threats back and forth with Sausage (and Fwhip). They'll get there eventually, but it'll take them a bit.
Katherine & Shrub: Shrub is a completely blank slate, linguistically, when they first arrive. Zero languages in common with anyone. They meet Joey and Katherine and begin learning. Katherine, in addition to teaching Shrub both Silvan and Mythlandic, is also learning Gnomish from her. By the time they start tentatively approaching a relationship, the language barriers are mostly gone. It just means they have to focus on some new vocabulary they hadn't really had a reason to encounter before.

A continuation on my post about unloved foods, specifically this is my in-depth defense of root beer.
Root Beer isn't inherently gross, it's just one of those weird local flavors that's off-putting to people who didn't grow up with it. We all like different things and also we all tend to like flavors that are similar to what we grew up with. That's okay! But honestly root beer is pretty unique and, in my opinion, delicious.
One of the main complaints against root beer is that it tastes like medicine. Funnily enough, it was originally marketed as medicinal! This is true for most OG sodas actually. Pretty much as soon as carbonated water was invented, people were drinking it to soothe various ailments. A lot of the original soft drinks were actually invented by pharmacists. I just think that root beer is especially cool because the main flavor came from the root bark of sassafras, a common North American shrub. Because it's so widespread and aromatic, all parts of the sassafras plant have been used in food and medicine by many different Native American tribes throughout history and was subsequently picked up and used by European colonists. In the 1960s, some studies indicated that that safrole oil, which is produced by the plant, can cause liver damage. Whether or not this would actually remain true after it had been boiled and added to root beer is unclear, but it was really easy to replicate the flavor, so the sassafras in commercial root beer these days is artificial. Another fun fact about safrole is that it's a precursor in the synthesis of MDMA. None of this information has stopped my childhood habit of eating sassfras leaves right off the shrub whenever I walk past it on a hike. I'm like 85% sure it's safe and also mmmm yummy leafs go crunch.
Another root beer complaint is that it tastes like toothpaste. I think this is probably because another key flavor in most root beer recipes is wintergreen. I'm assuming that the people who think this are the same people who think mint chocolate chip ice cream tastes like toothpaste. I can understand and even respect that some people don't like mint and associate it only with brushing their teeth, but like. Mint is a pretty common flavor. I mean I think it's safe to say that humans have been eating mint flavored stuff for longer than toothpaste has existed... anyway!
Other common flavors in root beer (real or artificial) are caramel, vanilla, black cherry bark, sarsaparilla root, ginger, and many more! There's not one official recipe, and root beer enthusiasts often have strong opinions about different brands. Some root beer is sharper, with more strong aromatic flavors, and others are mild and creamier.
Another thing I think is cool about root beer is that it's foamier than most sodas. This was originally because sassafras is a natural surfactant (and why sassafras is also a common thickening agent in Louisiana Creole cooking.) These days, other plant starches or similar ingredients are added to keep the distinctive foam. Root beer foam > all other soft drink foams. That's why root beer floats kick more ass than like, coke floats.
If you've never had root beer before, imagine if a sweetened herbal tea was turned into a soda, because that's basically what it is. If your first response to that is a cringe, fair enough. That's why lots of people don't like it. If your first response to that is "interesting... I might actually like it, though" then I encourage you to track down a can of root beer today, hard as that might be outside the US and Canada. Next time you see an "ew, root beer tastes like medicine/tooth paste" take, know that there's a reason for that, but also the same could be said for literally any herbal or minty food/drink.
My final take on root beer is that it would be the soda of choice for gnomes. Thank you and good night.

Here's how to write an authentic Grimm style fairytale, brought to you by a Certified German TM:
Forget everything Disney movies taught you, besides maybe Snowwhite, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. But even those are on thin fucking ice. Also ignore modern fantasy literature conventions, especially Dungeons & Dragons type stuff.
Ideally only the protagonist or none of the characters ought to have names. And the names should either be really fucking ordinary, or some kind of epithet. Like, either that's a Franz or a Bramblesock, cause when Bramblesock was a child he lost a sock in a shrub of brambles. Everyone else is either the king, the grandma, or the carpenter.
The common types of protagonist: Regular working class guy who cons his way into a life of riches, poor downtrodden peasant who through hardworking kindness is granted salvation (usually via gaining riches), too pure too good for this world princess who can't catch a fucking break, too nasty too bratty for this world princess who gets taught a lesson in humility.
The characters are generally very one note and the only kind of character growth they can experience boils down to "maybe I shouldn't have been a dick, huh?"
The location is either as vague as possible or super fucking specific for no reason; either the story takes place literally nowhere or in the town of Buxtehude.
Animals and inanimate objects that can talk for no apparent reason and no one bats an eye at are always a great addition.
If you want to add any fantasy races, use giants (large, dumb brutes), dwarves (angry little guys who live in the wilderness and get really angry if you touch their beards), or gnomes (mischievous house spirits who might be helpful but watch out!), but never more than one of these. Fairies are rare and usually the "tall beautiful wise woman" type, not the small annoying pixie type. Dragons are very pointedly no-where to be found, those distinctly belong in sagas, which are their own distinct type of literature.
Weird moral of the story that either boils down to "be smarter than all the other fuckers", "good things happen to good people, bad things happen to bad people", or "don't upset the supernatural".
Random tidbits of gore that no one bats an eye at.
Witches eat children, if a mother gets more than single line dedicated to her she's evil, fathers are spineless and/or assholes who either die or come around in the end.
Ugly means evil, pretty means good. Except when it doesn't.
Optional: Repeated rhyming phrases and numbers. Seventh son of a seventh son kinda stuff. The numbers 3, 7, 12, and 13 in particular.
Ideally a 19th century scholar should be able to read some clumsy Germanic pagan wishful thinking into the story, no matter how big and obvious the Christian overtones are.
Optional: Start the story with "Once upon a time" and end it with "And if they didn't die, then they are still alive today."

and didn’t the gnomes use magic through the mushrooms
and their life force was tied to them
as a kind of magic
and the mushrooms getting corrupted turned into the magic being corrupted turned into the gnomes being corrupted because of their strong magical ties
Okay okay theory:
Gem went to Shrub for help, and Shrub used her magic. However, Shrub's magic is corrupted by the crystal, which is why Gem's hair is now red. This means that Shrub, and possibly Gem, and corrupted. It also means that the crystal has the ability to infect magic specifically (which would make sense with previous lore because the other two people infected previously were Sausage and Joey, also explicit magic users with the blood sheep and the totems). Also, this means that its not looking great for Scott, as a magic user who has come in contact with the crystal, and is already showing behavioral signs of corruption.

Rosier Twin Microfic
CW: untrue anatomy and physiology of earth worms, cruelty to earth worms, the general oddities that are the Rosier twins
Evan was exploring the grounds of the manor in search of his sister under the direction of their mother.
He found he didn’t mind all that much; the green of the trees and grass, the blue of the sky, and the pinks and reds of the flowers in the garden were all a welcome reprieve from the sad, dull grey and beige that ‘decorated’ the inside of their familial home.
That is, he hadn’t minded until he found himself sinking up to nearly his knees in loose soil as Pandora materialized from behind some shrubs.
“Evan! What have you done?” She chastised, not looking at her brother but rather where the bottom half of his legs had disappeared.
“What have I done?” Evan shot back incredulously. “What the hells is this?”
Pandora simply let out a displeased huff as she dropped her gardening spade and moved to help pull her brother out of the earth.
“You’re standing on my worms.” She admonished as he finally stepped onto solid ground, sure enough brushing loose soil and earth worms from his professionally tailored trousers and dragon-hide boots.
“What in Salazar’s name are you doing with a colony of earth worms?” He all but sneered at his sister who barely spared him a glance, though her face read ‘I can’t believe you asked such a ridiculous question’.
“The worms are good for the soil.” Pandora responded simply. “After the trouble the Honking Daffodils had with the gnome infestation, I figured they could use all the help they could get.”
Evan turned to survey the space; the worms did seem to be attempting to make their way towards the vegetation, though he really thought they’d be more effective coming from both sides of the plant.
“You ought to put some to the right of the plants, too, Panda.”
“I could only find fifty on the grounds, I don’t want to separate them from their family members.”
Evan fought the urge to roll his eyes as he bent down and dug a worm from the loose soil. “You know that you can cut them in half, right? Then you’d have twice as many and can establish colonies on either side.”
The expression on Pandora’s face told Evan she was warring with the side of her that hated the idea of chopping up living beings and the side of her that valued experimentation.
With one look in her brothers direction, Evan knew the decision she’d come to in her mind.
“I…don’t think I can cut the worms, Ev.”
So, that’s how both Evan and Pandora found themselves being scolded by their mother for being late for dinner (and rather filthy) as Evan spent the rest of the late afternoon cutting up earth worms for his twin sister.

making yourself up as you go (a 12x100 about ESMP S1 and transgenderism)
(fic can also be read on ao3 here. cw for gender dysphoria and mild transphobia)
Katherine has, as far as anyone knows, always been Katherine. Always been the beautiful, lithe, perfect fairy they expect when they hear her name.
There is a certain image faer titles bring to mind, to faer fellow emperors and fairies alike. And if Katherine’s magic is any good- and it is good- that is the image they will always get, whenever they think of her.
It is only Katherine, now, who remembers that small and gangly child, hair too short and eyes too bright. He lives only in her mind, now, and Katherine is quite content to keep him there.
---
Shrub still doesn’t really get it, the gender thing. She grew up with something almost similar, but the words he used then, the words people used for his parents and baby sister, sound foreign and wrong on her new friends’ tongues.
So instead, Shrub looks at herself in the mirror, at her stocky build and choppy hair and mismatched socks, and she takes it in stride. It’s not wrong, the words her friends suggest- sometimes they even feel nice. They’re just not his, in the way nothing here truly is. In this way that means he’ll take what he can get.
---
Joey doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about. Maybe when he was younger, when becoming a boy was a much darker bruise, he would’ve understood better all the stress his new friends feel about the thing. Nowadays, however, Joey’s settled so well into the feeling that it’s hard to remember he was ever something else.
It certainly helps that no one he knows nowadays knew him as a kid, or that his closest friend and neighbor is a gnome who doesn’t understand human gender anyways. Joey is a man, now. Does there need to be anything else to it?
---
Fwhip has been grasping for whatever parts of manhood he could reach since he was young, and he still feels less than halfway there. It’s the small things- reminding ambassadors that it’s Sir, trying to match the bulk and height of his fellow emperors, making his voice sound deep enough to be believed. It’s the big things too, the things that make him taste bile when he catches sight of himself in the mirror.
But it’s easier to ignore the persistent ache, these days, with people, people like him, drowning out the voice of the angry little girl in his brain.
---
Gem sometimes feels like she hasn’t grown past the little girl she was 10 years ago. Sometimes, the face in the mirror isn’t hers, but a child in their mother’s clothes who’s about to discover her greatest secret, greatest joy.
It was hard, for a long time. The Crystal Cliffs only ever knew her as Gem, but she couldn’t help but feel like they could see right through her, through her dresses and long hair to the core of her person, to the too-tall little boy with knobby knees and broad shoulders.
Nowadays, though, all they can see is Gem.
---
Sausage knows how she looks. With her strong, tall build, her dark, coarse facial hair, her deep voice, she knows how she looks. And most of the time, it doesn’t bother him. He finds joy in the familiarity of masculinity the same way he does the novelty of femininity and androgyny.
But Sausage can’t help but be jealous. For all they love their body, they long for the beauty Katherine holds in every step, the androgyny Scott has never had to convince anyone to respect. Jealousy runs deep in Sausage’s bones, and she does her best to push it down.
---
Pearl has been pretty lucky, if she might say so herself. For the most part, her people have been quite accommodating when she slips in (or occasionally out) of being a woman. Farmer Queen or King, as long as Pearl can harvest, can defend his kingdom with fervor, how specifically he does it doesn’t tend to matter.
Pearl finds freedom in her gender, in her fancy dresses and heavy armor alike. In a world that becomes more complicated by the day, it feels good to have something, anything, that Pearl has full control over, and that makes her so happy.
---
Scott was much more of a pushover when he first became King. He let his advisors make decisions, he let the people around him form opinions of him and didn’t dispute them. It came with the territory of being a kid, of being thrown headfirst into a mass of worlds you didn’t understand. Nowadays, Scott has a century’s worth of ruling under their belt, and is much more willing to bite back against these incorrect assumptions.
He cannot deny, however, that people got one thing right. That ethereal androgyny humans tended to assign to elves? Yeah, that one was pretty spot on.
---
Joel doesn’t answer questions about her gender. There are simply more important things they could be talking about. Not only does it not matter, but it never has. No one ever cared about his gender when he was small, why should that change now that he was grown? Now that he was in charge? Lots of things that mattered as a kid didn’t matter now that xe was in charge, and in Joel’s opinion, that’s how it should be. The more power Joel gets, the older she grows, the less the world should place on her shoulders. It’s only fair.
---
When Jimmy washed up on the shores of the Codlands, the fisherman who found him called him a girl. He didn't speak the language yet, so he didn’t know what that meant. Once they learned the language, they still didn’t really understand. But sea knew it didn’t feel right, that calling searself she left a pit in sear stomach that sea couldn’t understand.
Even now, Jimmy doesn’t quite know why this new gender feels better. Codfather, Codboy, man, he doesn’t understand it in the way his human friends do. But that doesn’t matter as much as knowing it feels right.
---
The first person Lizzie met on land was a beautiful woman, tall and slender and suddenly, Lizzie understood everything she’d ever wanted to be. Lizzie molded herself on the humans of Pixandria, the fishfolk of the Codlands, and she took their words that sounded nice in her voice, looked right next to her name, until she’d made a person that felt entirely, totally, hers.
As time has gone on, that person has evolved. They’re taller now, they remember where they came from and what they originally wanted out of life. But Lizzie doesn’t think she’ll ever forget that beautiful woman.
---
Pix is beginning to get sick of being people’s queer awakenings. They’re happy to help, of course, but this is getting ridiculous.
Pixandria has always been removed from the cultures of its fellow humans. Being so far away, it was only natural that its people would care less about the customs that mattered so greatly to their fellows. So Pix gets it, when these young kids stumble through the gates of his city and take in all its differences for the first time, get exposed to the idea of more. He does, really!
But does it always have to be them?

My good comrades of Tumblr dot com, I come to you once again for this cause. I humbly ask for votes in the name of gnomes. Toad Berry came way too far and had way too much character development and narrative drama to lose now.
They're just little guys who found each other in a strange world. Rivals who realised they had more in common than they previously thought. One is trying to go home, the other... I'm not sure what Toad does, but he seems to like Shrub's company. Her wolves have accepted this strange toadstool into their family by now, at least.
They're sharing mushrooms and talking about their kingdoms, revelling in the peace and quiet of this fungal world before they eventually have to go back to their own demons. Won't you let them stay a little longer?

Shrub Berry
"shes the last of her kind she has ladybug wings she can talk to wolves and i love her lots" - Submission 183
"Shrub's empire is called the Undergrove and is located in the forest hills. She has gone for a general mushroom & forest-inspired cottagecore vibe for most of her builds, with several hobbit hole-like villager soon-to-be villager homes as well as a big colorful mushroom castle with multiple levels for her to live in.
The empire's main exports consist of nether-based building materials such as warped and crimson stems, as well as shroomlights and different kinds of mushrooms." - Empires SMP Wiki
Toad
"You know him you love him" - Submission 32
"Toad is one of the main characters of the Mario franchise. He is Princess Peach's attendant and a longtime protector of the Mushroom Kingdom. He is actually a singular character among an entire species of look- alikes (much like Yoshi is to the Yoshi species). leading to confusion over some of his appearances. He usually has the role of a supporting character who tries to help Mario and Luigi on their adventures" - Super Mario Wiki
