I'm as grateful for cellphones as the next person, but sometimes I think about how everyone having a phone on them at all times really did cause us to loose some things as a society. I mean - for example, kids these days will never experience their car breaking down and needing to find the nearest place with a phone they can use. They're never going to have the opportunity to tentatively approach a house only to discover that it's full of queer people having a party hosted by a transvestite to celebrate his creation of a sex homunculus, stay the night, and loose their virginity while unintentionally partaking in cannibalism. It's tragic, that kind of gay sexual awakening just doesn't happen these days because of cellphones.
#do i have actual legitimate thoughts on how cell phones have altered the fabric of society in both positive and negative ways?#yes.#am i making a dumb joke about rocky horror picture show instead of articulating the complex cultural changes wrought by their ubiquity?#also yes.#in which i say things

Atlanta miku lol. Inspired by the looks I often see at the Underground or at streetwear festivals.
ID: A drawing of Hatsune Miku as a black woman with long, curly hair in braids and afro puffs. She's wearing a black, pink, grey, and blue ensemble that mixes athletic gear and hip-hip inspired street clothes. A large pink tote bag is slung over one shoulder. She appears to be waving one arm while jogging. End ID.

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits
#exilley's diary#this is about utena btw like. yeah its feminist and a coming of age horror story but also#it was in part ikuhara’s response to the changes he observed in the corporate anime industry and an attempt to subvert those trends#it doesnt really help that i feel certain aspects of the show are filtered through translation and certain cultural emphasises are lost#like for instance. the blood type symbolism. or wakaba’s gestures with making packed lunches#theyre incredibly japanese expressions of conventional gender roles that non-japanese audiences might not fully resonate with

#hatsune miku#vocaloid#piapro studio#doodle#this is supposed to be one of those cultural mikus but…#not only have so many people already done filipino miku; singapore is…a Special Place let’s say#to keep it simple: there are four different ‘main’ cultures which cannot all be encompassed into one miku#it’s a lot more complicated than that but suffice to say the only way i can show ‘filipino living in singapore’ is with two aspects#jollibee and aging populations

It's always "Hades isn't bad or cruel, his deeds are just metaphors of the inevitable death" or "Hades kidnapping Persephone represent the premature death".
But when the argument "Zeus has numerous affairs and many children because he represent the fertile rain" is brought up, all nuance is suddenly out of the window and Zeus is just a womanizer who can't keep it in his pants.
#hades#zeus#greek mythology#greek gods#greek deities#cherry picking who should be condemned for their “crimes” and who can be excused because “their action is metaphorical”#just shows your ridiculous hypocrisy#if you're gonna judge the gods at least put all of them on the same standard#or maybe - i don't know - understand that you're not in the place to judge the deities from a different culture???#i admit i used to have a “Hades good/Zeus bad” phase too#but i'm growing out of it because in the end i'm only reading the stories from another country

legitimate question ....... why do people like to tell me all the reasons they don't like miraculous ladybug? i know i complain about the fact a lot, and i find myself on the defensive a lot, and i keep telling myself i'll stop and let it go, but it really is hard when people are always coming onto my posts, in my replies, in my comments, on my art and my fics and my text posts and anything i make, and telling me blatantly all the ways that they don't like the thing that i so blatantly find enjoyment in. "the show is bad". okay? good for you? why are you on my post about it? why don't you make your own? why are you telling me, specifically, this, on the art/fic/analysis i made that i assume you found by searching through the tag?
it's kind of a behavior that i legitimately don't understand. I'm a human being and I hate a lot of things, too. there are things i've loved at first and been disappointed by and have strong opinions about. there are things i like to complain about. so i'll complain about them to my friends or my family or my cat. but i have never, once, not even for a single moment, thought, "oh let me go into the tags of this media, find a positive post about it written by someone who's having fun with it, and make it that random stranger's problem". never once.
i just don't get it. i really don't get it. i sometimes worry that i come across like i'm heavily critical of people who just personally don't like the show, when really i'm just trying to defend my interests to the droves of strangers who are always coming specifically to me to tell me all the ways they hate the thing that makes me happy.
just.......... why? where does the urge come from? what do you get out of this?
#i remember there was a poll a while back asking people if they thought it was ok to tell ml fan creators that you hate the show unprompted#and 'yes' won#and i am still baffled by that#why is this normal?#why would you even want to?#why is it impossible to be an artist/creator on the internet without having to deal with people bitching and moaning in your ear about the#things that you are dedicating your time and energy into for fun?#why is this the acceptable online culture?#you don't have to like the show. im not saying that. im not saying you cant complain or vent#im just saying. why TO ME?#buggachatter

Never even in death will you lose your fame, but you will be in men’s thoughts, your name ever immortal... (Theognis 245-246, trans. Gerber 1999).
Sometimes, the niche crossover urge takes over. This is based on Greek red-figure vase paintings of kithara players (specifically the ones here and here). If you want to hear a little about how the kithara is played and a little sample of improvisation on the instrument, check out the video here!
#baldur's gate 3#baldur's gate 3 art#bg3#minthara baenre#minthara bg3#minthara#posting to celebrate my last (!!) week of summer assignment#y'all the number of zero-audience niche crossover takes i have.#minthara is an alcmaeonidae. menzoberranzan would love attic tragedy. zero audience takes.#the githyanki would love pindar. negative audience take.#but they would is the thing. epinician culture would be huge.#anyways playing with metal gauntlets would be terrible practice but this is my fantasy#and i will be in the ground before i show her without her armor.

I finally watched breaking bad (all within the past week or so while I worked, finished it and watched el camino last night) and I'm confident this isn't a new thought I'm expressing or anything but genuinely how DID an entire generation of dudes convince themselves Walter White was cool and admirable and intended to be sympathetic. I know ppl just lack media literacy sometimes but I'm still so confused
I don't think I've EVER watched a piece of media that so blatantly depicts a guy making the worst possible decisions at every turn and having his life ruined for it and not being redeemed or made sympathetic in any significant or lasting way. the kinds of justifications villains USUALLY give that make people consider them "morally grey" or "tragic" or whatever (everything I did was for my loved ones, I did what I had to to survive, once I was in this I couldn't get out, I just needed you to trust me so I could keep you safe, etc etc) is ALWAYS framed as complete self-serving bullshit when Walt says it, and one of the only shreds of personal growth he ever exhibits in the whole series is when he finally fucking admits that. every time he does something even remotely cool or drops a quotable one-liner, something terrible immediately happens that makes everything worse and makes him look like an unreasonable idiot asshole again. by the end of the series the ONLY characters they can still contrast as being morally "worse" than him are literally a bunch of bloodthirsty neonazis who kept a guy in a cage for several months. this show is practically SCREAMING at you the entire time not to admire Walt. why did every dude I knew in highschool have his face on tshirts and Facebook pfps.
I just don't get it. at least with The Dark Knight's Joker it was like, a feature-length movie and that's it. you spend a lot less time with the Joker and it has a lot less time to delve into his motivations, so there's way more room for flanderization and misinterpretation as people extrapolate the few cool/interesting/sad things they saw into a whole nuanced misunderstood guy in their heads and online. Walter White has 5 seasons' worth of 45min episodes to convince you beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a miserable fucking loser who ruins everything he touches because of greed and selfishness. if you weren't watching it for that, what WERE you getting out of this. what DID you think this show was about. am I just missing some key piece of context from 2012 or whatever that would help me understand this
#buny text#breaking bad#also I'm vaguely aware there was a big movement of fans who blamed everything on his wife and said she was the worst#which like. obvious misogyny from the primary audience of teen boys and young men aside#she's not really worse than any of the other adult characters?? she sucks real bad in the first couple seasons but so does everyone else#half the point of having all these characters be so shitty and rigid and unwilling to grow or accommodate others is so that#they can serve as landmarks to show how rapidly walt is abandoning his morals and spiraling into self-justification as the series goes on#the people you hate in season 1 are largely people you sympathize with in season 4 and 5 because compared to walt they're saints#idk. it's just weird having grown up around the fan culture for this show for the past decade or so and then finally watching it#and just being completely baffled now that i know what they were responding to

Concept: Elrond is, by Middle-Earth standards, a perfectly respectable level of fancy. You know, he's an elf-lord, he has plenty of robes with intricate embroidery or layers of flowing fabric, he wears finely-crafted jewelry, especially during formal occasions. He's elegant, but not gaudy– there are some tasteful references to his various ancestors in his outfits, he's got a whole image. He assumes that this is like, standard for the Noldor.
What Elrond failed to realize when he sailed to Valinor is that the expectations for "Middle-Earth elf lord with vaguely Noldorian implications" and "Noldor prince in the Blessed Realm" are two very different things. He goes to a feast and everyone is dressed like they'll die if they're not wearing four layers of skirts and at least 20 pounds of gems and precious metals. He shows up to Finarfin's court wearing more jewelry than he ever would've worn in Rivendell and people still flash him strange looks and ask him whether he wasn't feeling up to dressing up that night. He'll braid his hair in the half-up half-down style he often wore in Rivendell and it'll cause a scandal because– gasp– Elrond had part of his hair loose. In public. Noldor keep giving him jewelry because they've collectively decided that he's clearly been deprived in Middle Earth. He's confused and a little bit afraid, frankly.
Thankfully, most of the attention is taken off Elrond when Tirion is engulfed in drama the likes of which hasn't been seen for hundreds of years. The cause? Galadriel showing up in Tirion with her hair entirely loose, and no jewelry to speak of. Her robes are entirely plain. Her only adornment is her unbearably smug smirk.
#silmarillion#silm headcanons#elrond#elrond peredhel#galadriel#noldor#valinor#elrond in valinor headcanons my beloved#the culture shock had to be something#the noldor love him they're just very weird about showing it#this is bordering on crack territory but I stand by it
