Ode to Short Kings of Fiction + A List of My Favorites

I'm not going to lie… I'm a real sucker for a perfectly proportioned short man. In real life, I’ve never dated a guy taller than 5’9"—and at 5’2", that’s still plenty tall for me! They’re always tall to me, honestly. But when it comes to fictional characters, I constantly see them getting sized up or bumped to ridiculous heights like 6’2” or more. And you know what? Let these short kings live! Let them love! Let them stand proud in all their 5'7" (or less) glory.

They're confident, they're charming, and they’re fine as hell just the way they are. So here's an ode to the short kings of fiction: the ones who stand tall in spirit, no matter what their height says.

Here’s to you, love, to the boys who stand just close enough that when we kiss, our eyes lock like summer sunsets, lazy and burning all at once.

Link (The Legend of Zelda) – 5’6”-5’7”: A quiet yet brave hero, Link’s piercing blue eyes and unwavering courage make him the ultimate mysterious heartthrob, symbolizing hope in every quest he undertakes.

Scott Pilgrim (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) – 5'6": Endearingly clueless yet determined, Scott Pilgrim is the lovable underdog who fights for love, blending genuine heart with an irresistible mix of awkwardness and sincerity.

Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride) – 5'7": At 5'7", the charismatic Inigo Montoya wields his sword and thirst for revenge with flair, famously declaring, “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Logan (Wolverine) – 5'3" (often portrayed as 5'6"-5'8"): A rugged and fierce short king, Wolverine’s fierce loyalty and intense personality make him an unforgettable character, regardless of his height.

Leon Kennedy – 5'9" (Original Height): Controversial, I know. But, in my heart, Leon’s a short king at 5'9", radiating charm and awkward sweetness as he balances heroics with vulnerability, proving that it’s not about height but heart.

I’ve always preferred shorter guys. I’m 5’5”, and ideally, a guy would be somewhere between 5’4” and 5’6”—close enough in height that we feel like equals. Anything beyond 5’7” starts to feel awkward. I don’t want to feel small next to someone, and I especially don’t want to have to look up at them all the time. There’s something so much more natural about standing face-to-face, about being able to meet someone’s eyes without effort. The moment I have to crane my neck to look at someone, I’m out. And I refuse to stand on my tiptoes to kiss someone. That’s just not happening. Love should not require a stepstool.

But the real issue? I want to be taller. I am, essentially, the female equivalent of those guys who refuse to date tall girls because it makes them insecure. I get it now. I feel their struggle. Tall guys piss me off because they have what I want. It’s infuriating. Why do they get to take up so much vertical space while I’m stuck at an average, unremarkable 5’5”? It’s unfair.

Anytime I mention this, girls act like I must be lying. Like I must secretly want some 6’4” guy to come sweep me off my feet. Or worse, that I’m just a pick me, desperately trying to pander to men. And if we’re talking about guys between 5’4” and 5’6”, then technically, yes—I am trying to get their attention. When a girl says she won’t date anyone under six feet, no one questions her (except insecure guys that are definitely below six foot). No one accuses her of putting on an act. But the moment I say I don’t like taller guys, suddenly, I must be desperate.

It’s not that deep. I just like what I like. And what I like is not feeling short. I’m already thin—if a guy wants to pick me up and toss me around, he doesn’t need to be a foot taller to do so.

With short men feeling lonely and less likely to be in dates, having less respect in personal space (being touched more) or competency, considering limb enlargement surgery, and a not small number of suicidal ideation and feeling like lesser people, we have to be more conscious about heightism for men

If we really want to curb toxic masculinity, we need to change the unscientific idea that tall / large means manly, and focus on personality and achievements
