My rewatch of Burn Notice alongside my friend who's never seen it reached the end of season five yesterday. During season five, they were seriously questioning a lot of Michael's decisions as it went along. I'd explain Michael's motivations and reasonings and sometimes they'd say, "Okay, I suppose that's valid," and sometimes they'd say, "Hmm."

Then we reached the finale Fail Safe, and the scene where Michael handcuffs Fiona to stop her from leaving, and they erupted. "No, no no! He's taking away her agency! He's an arsehole!" Which is 100% valid. Fi's been saying for days that this isn't working, they can't keep going along with Anson, and Michael's talked her down each time. When it eventually reaches the point where she won't be talked down, his response is to chain her inside her own home.

Sonny's total outrage reminded me how that action of Michael's just disappears and isn't mentioned again. Obviously Sam and Michael spend the next episode arguing about it (but not about the fact that Michael did it, only about the fact that Sam went WTF and let her go), but we never see Fiona mention it and that feels... desperately out of character.

When Fiona gets out of jail, she should have handed Michael his arse. She should have been telling him in no uncertain terms that if he even thinks about pulling any shit like that again, she will shoot him in both of his knees. And obviously she doesn't because Nate's just been killed and Michael's devastated, so she drops right into the role of supporting Michael and loses her window.

And then I got to thinking about how rarely any of them call Michael out on the worst of his behaviour. Sometimes they do, for five minutes, and then he may or may not give one of his rare "I'm sorry"s, they forgive him and everything goes on as before. He never faces any long term consequences, until Nate dies, and then suddenly he does.

When Nate dies, Michael's feeling extra guilty - not just because he allowed Nate into his CIA work, but because he spent the day yelling at him. It's the same story Fiona tells about Clare, that her little sister died mad at her, and that fact eats at her far more than just that she was killed.

How long was Fiona in jail for? Three months? Something like that, I'd imagine. Definitely not anything like a year. That's how long it's been since Scorched Earth, since Michael spent the day yelling at Sam and then had that awful moment when he thought Sam might have been killed. So here he is again in a high stress, high stakes situation, getting furious at his unqualified brother for being unqualified, and then Nate dies.

Michael doesn't seem to learn from his own experiences; doesn't modify the worst of his behaviour based on what's happened to him before. He can't control his temper. It doesn't escape easily, but once it does, it's out there, and he's not getting it back in the bottle. Take a deep breath, think for a second, reconsider what you're about to do - those just aren't tools he has. In that respect, he's very much like Frank, and how much would Michael hate it if someone pointed that out to him?
