THINKING ABOUT HELENA & SHIPPING; more specifically, how I do not like nor have I ever liked any of the canon pairings for her. she’s been linked with many men in the dc universe, but i’m not particularly fond of any of them. I do keep them for my portrayal, but none of them were significant moments for her. not because she’s heartless, but because she deserved better than only ever getting surface value bullshit from scores of men they linked her with. usually to create drama for the more popular female characters…

part of me wishes they would have let her have something real, let people see who helena could be once she lets someone in for real. the closest we’ve ever gotten in any of her runs, i believe, were her relationship with the questions. both vic sage & renee montoya. regardless, short lived for both. the most significant relationships she’s ever had have been her non-romantic ones, which I do actually love: sal asaro (her #1 anything forever), charlie gage-radcliff, dinah lance, & I actually love what she & zinda had going on.

So Penny and Church would be in the same "Revolving Door of Death and Resurrection" club as Sara Lance.

(Arrowverse, Dinah Laurel Lance's younger sister, the first person to use the mantle of the Canary in Arrow. She seemingly died in the inciting incident of the yacht sinking that stranded Oliver, seemingly died when the AMAZO ship sank in the flashbacks in the season 2 finale (although we already saw her alive throughout the season in the present), actually died in the season 3 premiere when Malcolm Merlyn mind-controlled Oliver's sister (and his daughter) Thea to shoot her with arrows, then was brought back to life with the Lazarus Pit a year later and had her soul restored with John Constantine's help, may have died when Vandal Savage destroyed Central City (Flash undid it with time travel), had her neck snapped by a brainwashed Rip Hunter but was healed with the Waverider's (time ship) advanced medical technology, survived seeing the Fate Atropos' true form but became a Blind Seer, was killed by zombies thanks to Atropos but was revived by Charlie/Clotho, then was fatally poisoned by an alien-mutated Amelia Earhart (there's context, but it's still weird) and cloned with additional DNA that effectively rendered her unkillable (since the season's villain had a system to transfer his mind to a new clone body whenever one is killed, hopefully the same applies to Sara but it isn't really delved into for her). Ironically, she survived Crisis on Infinite Earths.)

Batfam Fancast Part 15: Birds of Prey

Barbara Gordon's close friends and personal squad of vigilantes, this group of mostly women are the premiere team when its comes to kicking ass and taking names. Similar to Charlie's Angels,Barbara as Oracle commanded the team to stop crime of all types. We'll be fancasting Black Canary, Huntress,Batwoman, and Lady Blackhawk.

Quick Recap we have Jane Levy as Barbara Gordon , Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Cassandra Cain, and Jacqueline Scislowski as Stephanie Brown.

While Cass and Steph are techinically not part of the Birds of Prey it would make sense to bring them into the fold. Allowing for extra character interactions. The fact is that these young women would have other more experienced women in their field to help teach them, especially if your mentor works with them often.

Huntress

Helena is the super serious badass of the group compared to the level headed Dinah and comedy relief of Zinda. As time goes on she learns to play nice and even appreciate being part of the team.

Just like my post about Jason its time to finalize my choice for Helena Bertenelli. Surprisingly neither of my original choices have been chosen. From Suzie Crabgrass in Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide to Rosita in The Walking Dead Christian Serratos has been all over the spectrum of television. The 32 year old actress has done it all and seen it all. Drama, action, horror, comedy, even sparkly vampires. Her experience and skill as an actress has Huntress written all over her.

Lady Blackhawk

Now we are getting into the lore that I bet not even most comicbook gurus would remember. The Blackhawks are a World War II era organization consisting of the world's greatest aviators fighting the Axis Powers along with other superpowered threats. (Now read this section in a 1930s radio voice)

Due to some time displaced shit during a mission Zinda Blake known as Lady Blackhawk finds herself in the modern world. Needing to adjust and find herself she joins the Birds of Prey, even suggesting to Barbara to call the team that. An ace pilot and sharpshooter, she does most if the pilot work for the Birds. Zinda can also hold her own in a fight hand to hand.

She plays a key role as the cooler of the group,as well as order beer in 30 languages, a woman after my heart. Honestly she's just a sassy and cooler MCU Bucky Barnes when you think about it. While everyone else is doing Kung Fu she will Kung Fu your face with a shotgun blast. Rambunctious and Brave , just like her time in the military she is a ride or die for her friends.

To really fit into this vigilante group, I questioned whether to keep her as a time displaced character or as a completely new character. Instead of her being a World War II era Aviator, instead becomes a descendant of the famous pilots. The idea in general is for the Blackhawks to still be a major paramilitary organization, working independently from any government or superpower. In the comics the Blackhawks become a international shipping company kniwns as Blackhawks inc. which she owns 1/8 of the company. I like to combined that idea with the paramilitary idea. Blackhawks inc. is a front for the Blackhawks organization to work internationally without any interruptions.

So the idea goes that Zinda is the youngest pilot and most talented agent of their organization, she inherited her stake in the company from her grandfather, a former Blackhawk, as well as her father a former Naval pilot. A former Air Force veteran herself she struggled with the restrictions and weight the company and her family name brought and soon found herself isolated socially from her more older agents. This isolation eventually led her to be recruited into the Bird of Prey which metaphorically allowed her to spread her wings.

"Great googly moogly Batman! He's typecasting!" Indeed I am! Ironically another actor in this franchise was typecasting for another Aviator centered film. From the Good Cop, and her breakout role in Top Gun Maverick Monica Barbaro is absolutely perfect for this role. Already working crime procedural comedy and the action masterpiece that is the Top Gun sequel she fits this role like a glove.

Batwoman

From character assassinations, terrible story arcs, all around butchering of character concept and continuity, The New 52 might have temporarily increased Comic Book Sales, however it butchered and outright erased multiple popular comic book characters. Though through all the thick and thin of terrible writing was small group of characters that were able to get great stories out of that terrible era. Kate Kane aka Batwoman are one of the first major LGBT+ character in DC and flourished during the New 52.

Daughter to Colonel Jacob Kane and cousin to Bruce Wayne her life was changed when her twin sister and mother were kidnapped, when her father raided the area her mother was killed and sister supposedly killed and was never found. Leaning on her father now more than ever she found herself seeking career in the US Army. She eventually made it to West Point as an incoming freshman. Sadly an anonymous tip accused her of homosexual conduct, her commanding officer asked her to disavow the claim, but as a woman of honor and to uphold the Honor Code of the Academy she will not lie. This sadly forced her out of West Point. While her father was supportive of her coming out, the action of her being forced out a West Point led her to a heavy partying lifestyle when she went to college. Later she defends herself against a mugger and encounters Batman. Inspired by the event she trains with her father and eventually becomes Batwoman.

I felt a need to talk about this character due to the fact that the CW's Batwoman is not the best representation of the character. Feeling too much like another Batman ripoff then the genuine original character from the comics.

In the Birds of Prey I designate her as the team Bruiser. While she is technically the least experienced of all the vigilantes she's willing to throw hands with anybody and everybody. Sort of the opposite of Batman and showing how the Birds and Batgirls the more experienced heros. Think Matt Damon in Ocean's 11,a bit if a rookie but definitely can stand with the big leagues.

For Kate Kane I needed someone with a chip on their shoulder, something to prove. Evan Rachel Wood was my only choice for this role. As the lead in Westworld and a whole laundry list of television and movie roles she feels like the perfect candidate for this Gotham defender.

Black Canary

While Oracle commands the Birds of Prey, the weight of leading the team out in the field goes to Black Canary aka Dinah Lance.Cunning and commanding,she is a skilled fighter that can keep up with the likes of Batman and impress the likes of Lady Shiva who wishes to challange her. But while she is a great hero her origin story are as various and muddled as her Arrowverse portrayal. There is Dinah Drake the original WW2 era Justice Society member, Dinah Laurel Lance Daughter of Dinah (Now pronounced Diana) Drake-Lance member of the Justice League and New 52 Dinah Drake- Lance? Experiment turned government led Leader of Team 7 and divorced punk rock star? Then in Rebirth reverts the origin to its original but her and Slade still team up for some reason? Its all confusing so I'm just going to fuse it into a cohesive story.

Dinah Laurel Lance (Die-Nah) is the granddaughter of Dinah Drake-Lance (Diana) a meta human and the first Black Canary or just Canary, Dinah Drake is a founding member of the Justice Society. Years later after the JS disbandment due to government mandates she is recruited into a government lead Black Ops team known as Team 7. Other well known team members are a young Slade Wilson and future husband Kurt Lance. She retires and divorces Kurt Lance and lives a quiet life as a singer she dreamed to be, afterward having a daughter Diana Lance (Yes I'll confuse you even more) and granddaughter Dinah.

Decades later Dinah Laurel Lance grows up and develops the same metahuman abilities and has to train under her grandmother. Dinah Drake dies of cancer and Dinah at 17 is inspired to go into music creating a punk rock band known as the "The Canaries". The band never hits it big and disbands but has a cult following. This to the fact the masked lead singer dubbed the "Black Canary" was seen fighting crime whenever they were on tour. During her time in the band she was also presuing a degree in psychology eventually earning her degree at 27 (Added some Young Justice lore).

She moves to Star City and develops a romantic relationship with Green Arrow, Oliver Queen. While their love was about 4 years strong they have a falling out when she learned how Oliver treated their ward Roy Harper when they learned he was a drug addict. With Roy leaving after that she breaks up with Ollie and eventually found herself in Gotham meeting Barbara as Batgirl. They become close friends to the point where when Barbara becomes paralyzed she's there to help her recover. A year and repaired Ollie relationship later, Barbara now Oracle creates the Birds of Prey and recruit Dinah as her first member and team leader.

I could have easily gone with the obvious actors for this role, Winnick a popular fancast or even stay with Smollet. But I'm going in a different direction.I didn't want to go with that really well-known actress and wanted someone to really bring in that brawler aesthetic that Black Canary brings. Jessica McNamee is an Austrailian actress best known in America for the USA Network show Sirens or more recently as Sonya Blade in the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie. The very movie where she had to keep up with likes of Lewis Tan, Max Huang and Ludi Lin. While the action was not the best the potential is there, she had a amazing rough fight scene against Kano that really emphazied her toughness. I have the confidence to say this Aussie actor has the potential for this bird.

Hey! tysm for your question, it made me go deep into my dream wedding for them...

I have no idea of what it will actually happen, because is Legends and I never know what they'll do but I've been thinking about it and I have a story in my head now...

I think after everything they just want to get married, like immediately, I don't think Sara had a dream wedding as a child and since Ava's memories are programed she didn't either and I don't think she ever thought about getting married when she started making her life in 2018 or whenever Rip brought her to the present.

So they don't care much about the wedding they just want to get married... but of course Nate, Behrad and Zari can't allow that.

"After everything that happened you deserve a big wedding, or at least something really special."

"Come on, a wedding is supposed to be an event, your love deserves to be celebrated in a bigger way."

So they decide to have a wedding, not too big, after all, the most important people are already in the ship. But of course, in my headcanon Quentin has to be there, also Laurel, even if she's not her real sister, she's still important (and maybe she will invite Dinah, but more as Laurel plus one, is still a small wedding so...), Felicity has to be there and maybe William and Mia too, but from 2040 (I don't think kids have a great time at weddings). Obviously Ray and Nora, Mona, Lita, and Jax. Charlie should come too, and Gary will definitely be there even if they try to stop him lol. I would love to have Leo and Ray from earth x there too.

I agree it should be a winter wedding, hell, make it a Christmas wedding, her relationship changed in Christmas after all.

(I think it's a good moment to say that I have no idea how weddings are and I never dreamed of one in any situation, except maybe a Disney wedding but that's another thing, my point is that I never thought of a wedding, I never even thought Avalance would get married but now we're here and I want a winter wedding).

Nate and Zari do the planning. Behrad helps a little and Gary keeps trying to get his ideas in, but as Sara said, he's not planning the wedding. Mick sorts out arguments. Everything has to be approved by Ava and Sara, they fully trust Nate and Zari but it's their wedding and they are very protective of that, they're also getting a little excited as the preparation goes on.

I'm not sure on the venue, I think John's house is good but I imagine the ceremony in an open place with nature around.

There's white and blue flowers everywhere, the chairs are naivy. The altar is also covered by dark blue flowers with a small white flowers. Is the evening and there's fairy lights around that give everything a bit of warm to level the cool colors.

Quentin walks Sara down the aisle and Ava is already waiting (the boys offered to walk her down, Spooner said she'd look better, Zari said that if they weren't going to be traditional then she could walk her, they were closer anyway, they all started arguing, Astra rolled her eyes and Charlie said she was literally a shapeshifter and Ava could choose anyone who ever lived to walk her down the aisle, Ava smiled foundly at them but chose to go alone).

There's the mildest snow falling, and they're both wearing their hair down, the snow makes everything seem like a magical dream or something.

I don't know about the dresses, I keep imagining warrior princess wedding dresses, if that makes sense.

There's the typical emotional family moments there. Sara has lots more but everyone makes sure to let Ava know that she has a family in them, that includes Quentin (even Laurel and Felicity).

Mick will be the one to officiate, he writes a beautiful speech before letting them say the vows, they either just do something about decisions (I can explain if you like) or something more emotional depending on what happens in the next episodes.

It's all really cute and everyone cries a little. Ava and Sara both get their father-daughter dance with Quentin.

Later there's some tipsy speeches from almost every Legend, except from Zari and Behrad, Zari's speech is incredible and makes both Ava and Sara cry. Behrad is high but his speech is wonderful and Nate and Ray start saying they want a do-over.

After everyone gets really drunk Sara is sitting alone looking at her very drunk wife dance, there's so much love in his eyes. Ray smiles when she sees her and goes to sit with her, Mick and Jax join them a few moments later and they start talking about how different their lives were when they first got in that ship, and how different they were back then...

How I feel about this character: I have very... complicated feelings about Babs because I started like, heavily getting into comics when I became disabled and Birds of Prey was one of my first series and I definitely. latched onto Babs and I heard she had a N52 series and I got so excited and then... yeah. Every modern, main timeline appearance she's had since Batgirl (2011) is making me like her less and less, like I genuinely do believe that, even ignoring the ableism, modern Barbara is a lesser version of the character. She's not as complex, she's not as mean, she's too childish, she gets caught up in boy drama way too much, it's just a mess. That interaction she had with Kate, where Kate asked if she'd ever been to war, and Babs said 'oh I've dated Dick Grayson'... I can't even say that's out of character for who Babs is now. That's how badly they've done her character.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Dinah, I actually think she and Luke could've been fun in a different book, Jason Bard/Babs is extremely interesting IMO, Bette, I think she and Kory should kiss

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Her and the Batgirls that came after her, yes that includes Charlie. Also her and Wendy... generally any mentor/protege relationship that Babs has is always fun like they always push her and make her approach things in new ways. Also also Power Girl because akshdgf THE HISTORY...

My unpopular opinion about this character: DickBabs is one of the worst things to ever happen to her character. That ship came at the cost of years of her history being chopped away; her other romantic relationships were all seen as lesser which was so??? Like Babs was going to marry Jason and that's... never mentioned. It's insane to me. Babs got like seven years knocked off her life to make her Dick Grayson's love interest and I'm gonna be honest, I don't think her or Kory's characters ever fully recovered from that

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she and Kory got to interact and be written by someone who understood how to write women. Like they've met for one page... and it was awful and terrible and I hate it and it makes no sense for either character.

Favorite friendship for this character: Her and the Birds!!! Like that's her family... also her and Tim!!! I miss their preboot friendship and I wish it would come back every single day

Anon, I'm gonna be honest, I have such a small number of ships that I actually care about.

One time ages ago I got an anon to list my top 10 OTPs and i never answered it because I couldn't finish the list. I got like 5 in and just blanked.

If I have to answer this:

Adrinette/Ladynoire/Marichat/Ladrien, or what have you of that mess. I'm stuck in Miraculous Ladybug hell until that show reaches whatever conclusion we're trying to reach. They gave me a cute ship to latch onto but now I also stay for the emotional turmoil my stupid catboy is dealing with.

Uhhhh I guess Ten & Rose? Not like I'm still actively on the Doctor Who hype train at all anymore but I rewatch the seasons I like a lot and that storyline always kills me.

Charlie & Claire (or Peanut Butter) if we wanna go way old school. That ship breaks my heart and I take a hiatus after season 3 everytime I rewatch LOST. But I do love that ship, and I totally don't have an empty jar as a decoration on my bedside table to think of them...nope nope nope.

Gonna be honest, already blanking...which is sad...

I mean if we're talking comic book ships, DickKory, RoyDick, obvi I enjoyed BirdFlash from my YJ days since I wrote a song about it, whatever Babs and Dinah have going on, StephKara, whatever tf Hal and Barry have going on, SuperBat, Harley and Ivy have been pretty cute lately, TimKon is still ok in my book, Timber needs to get way more interesting for me to care more about it past the enjoyment of Tim's queer awakening, uhhhhh....idk?

And those aren't even really OTPs. I just enjoy them but I can't write several paragraphs about each of those ships, I could just tell you why I like them.

When I was a kid, I had WAY more ships. Pretty sure my first OTPs were Jimmy & Cindy and RobStar. And then I hopped on the Disney Channel/Nickelodeon train and it was Pheely (which still hurts, don't talk to me), I guess Miley & Jake was something we all stuck around with until Disney Channel traded Jake out for Jessie after destroying Jake and opting for a more generic guy instead, Alex & Mason, Zutarra, I was team Creddie for sure, Joe & Stella, and don't even START me on Channy. SONNY & CHAD WERE MY SHIT. I though RobStar was a fun and painful slowburn, and it was better in many ways just for development, but Channy WRECKED me. Tuning in every week to get tiny moments from them or big explosive near-confessions? I was glued to my TV every...sunday? Was that the Hannah/Wizards/JONAS/Sonny block? I made myself ship merch. And then that ship kinda got weird after they got together because it was just...not as fun and their relationship was odd.

But yeah, I don't actually ship that much. Like, I do enjoy when I'm watching something to have a ship to latch onto, but it doesn't really become a focus for me these days. With the exception of TimSteph, I would say I'm a very casual shipper. I'm just kinda chillin here, anon.
