Sonya and Liu Kang’s friendship is one of the things I enjoyed most about the 2021 movie

Three of the ladies in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie.
Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Tati Gabrielle (Jade).
I may not be overly excited for the flick, but these are some fine ladies, and solid picks for each of their respective characters.
Liu Kang, Kuai Liang and Kung Lao just got harder than the Cobalt Mines of Shokan (thumbs up for any MK fan who got that reference).

Premise of a fictional movie (part 2):
Set in a fantasy setting, after a kingdom is conquered by a brutal warmongering nation, the youngest daughter of the fallen king (played by Vivien Lyra Blair) must be escorted through the Forbidden Desert for her safety. With the kingdom’s royal guard destroyed, the girl must rely on a ragtag team of 12 fighters to get her through the desert.
The problem is, no one has successfully made it through the Forbidden Desert on foot…
Current body count:
1) The sole surviving member of the royal guard (played by Richard Madden) is the 1st to die in the movie. He is killed by an arrow during an ambush by marauders living in the Forbidden Desert.

Can’t help digging how Liu Kang and Sonya parallel each other in Mortal Kombat (2021)
Both started with being the “unchosen” one, bearing no dragon mark despite having a strong will to fight. Both had to “earn” their mark in a lethal fight which ended with them taking their opponent’s life. Sonya nearly lost her own life in her fight with Kano while I imagine Liu Kang’s battle with the unnamed champion couldn’t be very easy despite Liu Kang’s training.
Their kills to get the mark were both “righteous vengeance”, as Liu Kang offed a child trafficker/abuser who targeted orphans like him and Sonya got rid of a traitor who tried to have her and the rest of the team killed.
Liu Kang’s and Sonya’s arcanas are highly offensive and destructive in nature and they both manifested right after their acquisition of the mark.
Liu Kang regarded himself as a “worthless stray” and I’m convinced he still sees himself as such from time to time (especially after Kung Lao’s death). Sonya was outright dismissed by Raiden and Kung Lao for not having the mark and I don’t doubt she felt sidelined and helpless while watching Cole and Kano practice and later, when Shang Tsung attacked. To top it off, Mileena said her life wasn’t even worth taking.
Liu Kang’s remark about an individual without the mark being a liability seemed heartless and jerkass at first but it’s likely he was merely echoing what had been directed at him since he started training for Mortal Kombat (and he believes it to be true, without malice).
In short, Liu Kang and Sonya share a lot of similarities, which should make them best friends (they’re already friendly toward each other). Also, it’s refreshing to see a healthy male-female friendship onscreen, without the fear that they may become an item in later installments.

The makeout session between these two is probably very steamy and raw, given their hotheaded personalities in their universe.

Meanwhile, the makeout session between these two is probably gentler and slower, given their more easygoing and subdued personalities, but still very passionate.

Mortal Kombat (2021)
My rating: 4/10
Of course the real battle here was between myself and overwhelming boredom, and given that I ended up falling asleep about half an hour into this, I suppose boredom won. This is, basically, the unskippable cutscene at the beginning of the game, stretched to feature length and filled with pointless fanservice - did anybody else fly into a white hot rage every time they said a catchphrase from the games for absolutely no good reason?
