Dean's boyfriends ranked by how normal they were about him (from most to least):

4. Lee Webb. As normal as one could get about Dean Winchester. Like yeah, he tried to kill him, but that was completely unrelated to them being exes. Even able to have a nice, friendly reunion with Dean, no hard feelings at all (again, until Lee tried to kill him).

3. Benny Lafitte. Genuinely probably the closest Dean got to a normal relationship with a man and they probably could have made it work if they weren't both hung up on other people. Benny did end up sacrificing his life for Dean, after Dean ghosted him even, but Dean was only partly the motivation there. Still, seeing the dynamic between Dean and Cas in Purgatory and willingly inserting yourself is kind of bonkers.

2. Crowley. Man started this relationship thinking he had the upper hand, then caught feelings and fully shattered himself on the altar of Dean Winchester. Went around telling people that Dean completes him after they had a regrettable summer fling, then sacrificed his life for him because that's just what falling in love with late-seasons Dean does to a motherfucker.

(Special mention of Chuck, who while completely abnormal about Dean was never his boyfriend, as much as he wishes.)

1. Castiel. And it's not even close. In this competition, Cas takes the gold, silver and bronze. Laid a hand on Dean in hell and never had a normal thought again. You just know he had fantasies for years about confessing his love for Dean while dying in his arms before it actually happened. Fortunately for him, Dean matches his freak perfectly.

Its moments like these that really puts how much Castiel gave up for Humanity and Dean and Sam into perspective. I wish they'd kept this scene in the episode, it gives so much depth to his character.

DEAN: (to himself) Alright, Cas, where are ya?

Suddenly, a rustle in the bushes. Dean tenses, hand reaching for his gun, but then relaxes as a familiar figure emerges: CASTIEL, angelic and serene.

CASTIEL: (softly) Dean.

Dean's relief is palpable. He strides over, and without a word, pulls Castiel into a tight embrace. Castiel's eyes flicker with emotion as he returns the hug.

DEAN: (voice thick with emotion) You idiot. You scared the hell out of me.

CASTIEL: (smirking) I apologize. It wasn't intentional.

Dean pulls away slightly, studying Castiel's face with concern.

DEAN: What happened? You've been MIA for weeks.

Castiel's expression darkens, a mixture of sorrow and regret.

CASTIEL: It's complicated. But I've been searching for answers.

DEAN: Answers? About what?

Before Castiel can respond, a deafening roar echoes through the woods. Dean and Castiel exchange a knowing glance, then take off running.

CUT TO:

INT. ABANDONED CHURCH - NIGHT

Dean and Castiel burst through the doors, weapons drawn. Inside, a powerful DEMON, its eyes blazing with malice, stands before an altar, a glowing artifact in its grasp.

DEAN: (gritting his teeth) Well, well, well. Looks like we've got ourselves a party crasher.

The demon chuckles darkly, its voice dripping with contempt.

DEMON: You Winchesters never learn, do you? This world is mine for the taking.

CASTIEL: (calmly) Not if we have something to say about it.

With a flick of his wrist, Castiel sends the demon hurtling across the room. Dean moves in, delivering blow after blow with fierce determination.

DEAN: (grunting) You think you can just waltz in here and take what you want? Not on our watch.

Castiel joins the fray, his grace-infused punches sending shockwaves through the air. Together, they fight with a synchronicity born of years of camaraderie and trust.

Finally, with a final burst of energy, Dean plunges his blade into the demon's heart. It lets out a guttural scream before dissolving into nothingness.

Dean and Castiel stand victorious, chests heaving with exertion. But their triumph is short-lived as the artifact on the altar begins to pulsate with an otherworldly energy.

CASTIEL: (eyes widening) Dean, we need to destroy it. Now.

Dean nods, determination etched into every line of his face. With a swift motion, he raises his blade and brings it crashing down onto the artifact, shattering it into a thousand pieces.

The room is bathed in a blinding light, and for a moment, everything goes still.

CUT TO:

EXT. CLEARING - NIGHT

Dean and Castiel emerge from the church, battered but alive. The moon hangs low in the sky, casting a soft glow over the landscape.

DEAN: (panting) Well, that was… something.

CASTIEL: (smirking) You could say that.

They share a knowing glance, a silent acknowledgment of the bond that has formed between them.

DEAN: Listen, Cas… about earlier…

Castiel raises a hand, silencing him with a gentle smile.

CASTIEL: You don't have to say anything, Dean. I know.

Dean's expression softens, a wave of relief washing over him.

DEAN: Good. Because I'm not sure I could find the words anyway.

Castiel steps closer, their eyes locking in a moment of perfect understanding.

CASTIEL: Some things don't need words, Dean.

And with that, he leans in, pressing his lips to Dean's in a tender kiss. Dean's heart skips a beat, warmth flooding through him as he wraps his arms around Castiel, pulling him closer.

FADE OUT.

it's kinda crazy how usually when people talk about powerful profound love it's like "I would've found you in any life" like kinda soulmate esque and that's kinda like the standard view of "great" love (at least in my experience)... like that's the goal... and then you have spn and Dean and cas and theirs is decidedly NOT that... like quite the opposite cuz we saw other worlds and timelines and that didn't happen but it's like even more powerful because of that bc obviously there's the chuck of it all and like their relationship was not part of the story and it wasn't even supposed to be part of the story in their universe either but yet here's cas "shattered at the altar of Winchester" "in love.... with humanity" and Dean "the very touch of you corrupts" who just go against all that and just break the mold and it's the opposite of what people usually view as a great love story which somehow just makes it better

dean rattling against the cage of death to get back (and jensen's jacting joices in this episode, my god his eyes are so wet and i am so enchanted). the lore of the angry spirits getting fleshed out. tessa the reaper (beloved). sam and john being foils of each other, refusing to back down, while acting against each other's best interests. AZAZEL AND JOHN AND THE UNHOLY MYTHOLOGY OF THE FATHER!!!!!!!!

I know that we are all clowning about the Altar of Dean Winchester today, and there’s a lot of Cas-centric discourse but LEST WE FORGET -  Rowena is specifically annoyed because of her son’s conduct.

Literally there is NO REASON for all of this footage.  Sam is the one who ends up killing the hellhound.  The only plot line Dean has in the MOTW episode is Sexy Walk in the Woods With Crowley (and his own personal monster connections).

It’s truly the most excellent of plot lines.  Really, anything else is just filler.

no but what if 2009 dean had stayed in the 2014 au longer? what if zachariah had sent him there before, before the night 2014 dean sent them all to their death. what if he'd spent time, weeks, months, with his older self, with cas? he would have noticed, that they weren't friends. that they were old lovers, so old they were doing it out of habit rather than real feeling anymore. and what about cas? there he would be, suddenly faced with this hopeful, more caring version of the man he loves. a dean who still wants peace, who still wants to fix things. already a cynic, but still so full of love. something that his dean hasn't let show in a long time. and cas can't stop looking at him, and 2014 dean notices but he's too shut off to admit that he hates it. that he hates himself for not being that version of himself anymore. that he hates his younger self for being something that his cas can look at with fondness in his eyes. all he gets is sadness. and 2009 dean notices too, and it unsettles him but he is curious about it. he wonders if cas regrets this version of him. he wonders how it happened, at which point he and cas got together. he wonders if it was ever tender, or if it's always been this broken relationship, born from the war. and they talk, cas and 2009 dean talk a lot. not at first, but little by little they develop a habit of staying up late at night and just talking. cas asks dean to remind him what life used to be like. dean asks cas what he likes about his dean. and cas tells him, but sometimes it's like he can barely remember. he loves him because it's interwoven with the fabric of who he is. but if he's being honest he isn't sure he likes him. but he likes past dean. he's funny, and not only in a dry, dark way. he genuinely makes him laugh, and he laughs, too, and his eyes crinkle, and he smiles those big smiles that bare his teeth, and he worries, and he cries when they lose a friend to the croatoans, and he cares, he cares so much. and cas falls in love all over again. he cleans up his act, too. he sobers up and he tries to be the version of himself that past dean wants to see. and dean thinks he gets it. he already knows he's going to end up with cas so there's no use denying what he's currently feeling. and he does feel it, the comfort of falling in love with your best friend. and he holds cas's hand, and that's comfortable. he kisses him, and it feels like falling off a skyscraper at first but then that becomes comfortable too. they spend a night together, and dean thinks he has never felt more loved in his entire life. and it's a rush, and it's comfortable, and it's not right. because this cas isn't his best friend, and they don't belong to each other, not really. and there is the very real possibility that 2014 dean might kill him if he keeps it up. so he doesn't. but he thinks about his cas, and how right it would feel with him. he thinks about all the things he loves about his cas, his best friend, the angel for whom time works differently than for him and yet who is so different from this cas right here. because no matter how old you are, things and people still change you. and he doesn't ever want to be the reason that his cas changes into the man standing in front of him. he won't let himself be the reason castiel, his castiel, is ever this sad. this lonely. he knows now, that whether it happens now or a year from now, or ten, he and cas will end up together. he just needs to make sure that when they do, cas still feels like his best friend, and that he is still cas's. that cas wouldn't rather be with a younger, livelier dean. so when he gets back to his time, he begs him. don't ever change. but really he's making himself a promise. don't ever change him.
