In the dark AU where Gi-hun joins In-ho (in the interest of doing the best he can for players with his power on the inside), I have Ga-yeong thoughts:

-We see Gi-hun call Ga-yeong and REALLY talk for the first time in a long time. He tells her that he "got a new job" at a very prestigious company, one that necessitates that he travel a lot - he tells her he's a game developer. She's super proud of him. We get to see him visit her and pamper her and be her dad again. In-ho calmly remarks that money fixes everything.

-In-ho gets to see some of the old Gi-hun emerge when he's around his daughter, reanimated like a corpse by the strength of his love for her and his desire (need) not to upset her - the smiley, goofy, exuberant man that he was before the horrors

-In-ho gets attached to Ga-yeong as a foster daughter and is very protective of her; she, unbeknownst to her or her other parents, has a 24/7 personal guard who keeps her safe from a distance (just in case - their line of work is dangerous and makes you plenty of enemies)

-Ga-yeong is the first person (besides the pink soldiers lol) to figure out that her dad is dating In-ho

-She asks her dad if she can play some of the games he makes. His face freezes and then he chuckles and pats her hair, just a little stiffly, and tells her that he'll bring her some toys from his company next time. In-ho has his people throw together a small toy company overnight and has Ga-yeong sent an ensemble of high-end dolls, toy car racetracks, water pistols, etc.

rewatching this episode just reinforced to me that gihun didn't forget gayeong's birthday, he just knew he had nothing to give her nor any money to spend on her so he was feeling ashamed.

like i said during the liveblog, i thinking his reaction is more annoyance at his mom because he was reminded that he has no way to make her birthday special or meaningful like she deserves.

in fact, the rest of the episode is him mentioning gayeong's birthday multiple times - for the pin of his mom's card, for the horses he bets on.

also, we later learn that gayeong was born during the strike, on the day gihun's friend died no less. i really don't believe he will ever forget that date.

I was gonna make a more in-depth post about this, but honestly I don't feel like it right now so I'm just gonna say this.

I don't think enough people talk about what a dick Ga-yeong's stepfather is to Gi-hun.

He took advantage of the fact that Gi-hun needed money for his sick mother to try to bribe him out of Ga-yeong's life. Yes, Gi-hun is responsible for getting rid of her insurance to gamble. He isn't faultless for his predicament. But that doesn't give the stepfather the right to try to exploit Gi-hun.

And I've seen people argue that Gi-hun acted immaturely for punching him, and he should've had a "conversation" with the stepfather.

Well yes and no. I don't typically condone violence, but honestly I can't blame Gi-hun for his reaction. But even so, if the stepfather had such an issue with Gi-hun being in Ga-yeong's life and truly thought it was bad for Ga-yeong, he should've been mature and bring up his concerns to Gi-hun. Not wait until Gi-hun was asking for money for his sick mother and attempt to use that to his advantage.

Taking advantage of someone's desperate situation for your own gain? Now what does that remind me of? 🤔

To be clear, I don't think the stepfather is as bad as the VIPs. He is just a guy looking out for his family. But he went about it in the worst way, and this post is more about pointing out that Gi-hun isn't the (only) one in the wrong in that whole situation.

Which brings me to my biggest gripe about how the scene is portrayed in the show. Ga-yeong sees Gi-hun punch her stepfather, and that's it. She doesn't get the context we as an audience do (and I highly doubt the stepfather told her "hey I tried to pay your dad to never see you again so he clocked me"). Gi-hun is not a perfect father in any way, but it's upsetting that they played out the scene the way they do, almost to force more conflict in his relationship with his daughter.

As someone who had a pretty absent father, I'd be pissed if some other parental figure tried to pay him off to never see me again. Gi-hun isn't the best influence, but he isn't a danger to Ga-yeong. The bribe was really uncalled for and very insulting, and I wish the show didn't try to act like Gi-hun was the one in the wrong.

This post was longer than I thought it would be and probably not as coherent as I'd like but whatever. I've been thinking about the stepfather situation for weeks and just need to post something addressing it.

I think the Hwang brothers have to be one of my favourite (if not my favourite) non-romantic pairings but I'm not gonna yap about them more here because I've already done that on some other questions and several other posts

Sang-woo and Gi-hun are soooo deliciously tragic regardless of if you see them as romantic or not

Gi-hun and Jung-bae I tend to prefer as platonic more than romantic but I can enjoy it either way, but I love them 😭 the way Jung-bae brings out the old Gi-hun is so so sweet (and makes his death even more tragic)

Also!! Another non-romantic one (which I admittedly haven't given as much love as they deserve, but I digress): Gi-hun and Ga-yeong. We don't see a lot of Ga-yeong but despite Gi-hun doing things that hurt his family/his relationship with them (again, talking specifically about his daughter here) we can see just how much he loves and cares about her (how happy he is when taking her out on her birthday, how upset he is when he hears about her moving to the United States (I think that was one of the main reasons he joined the games initially?), the phone call scene in s2... cries)

so fluffy hcs:

they all throw a huge party when jiyeong decides to change her last name to seong. gihun sobs the entire time.

every friday night they have movie night and it is sacred, so that means that usually no one goes out with friends or such. they also order takeout and make popcorn and get all snuggly on the couch.

gihun sees the kids off to school every morning. he doesn't drive them there because they insist that they are grown and don't need mommy to drive them there.

inho has an office, which he initially told everyone was private, but once minsu was reading a book and he wandered in to ask inho a question.

they have a basement that is the communal space for the kids, which they call the sun room, because it is painted pale yellow. inho has said that the name is egregious because you can't even see the sun but the kids never changed it.

semi is a true gamer and she has a whole setup in the sunroom that only she can touch. she once found gayeong playing hello kitty island adventure and almost lost it but gayeong was so happy that she allowed it. only they can touch the computer after that.

inho helps the kids with homework because gihun gets so frustrated over not understanding it that he starts crying with the kids as well.

they wear each other's clothes all the time. saebyeok wears gihun's jackets all the time, semi wears daeho's pants bc they are the right ammount of baggy and they have large pockets, junhee and jiyeong swap clothing all the time because they have a smiliar build, thanos once wore inho's leather jacket and vaped all night so it smelled like blue lemon ice the next day, gayeong borrows from junhee, cheol wears the same things as daeho bc he admires his big brother, daeho once tries to wear one of gihun's jeans but they wouldn't go past his thighs, and gihun has accidently worn a top that belongs to semi several times. minsu is so dorky that no one steal clothes from him :(

gihun almost exclusively cooks and bakes. in fact, he's a stress baker and when he gets overwhelmed he bakes a bunch of goodies. the kids and inho lowkey take advantage of this and make requests so they can all have a dessert they like.

gihun still smokes and once thanos said he wanted to try one because he vapes, but it tasted so bad he was gagging.

junho comes over so much he pratically leaves there and the guest bedroom is just junho's bedroom. inho has a feeling that junho doesn't even have an apartment, that's how much stuff he has in gihun and inho's house.

they've talked abt getting a pet, but each kid wants something different and inho isn't about to have an entire zoo at his house 😤 they eventually reach an agreement and get a dog and a cat, which gihun is very excited about!

cheol has an unexplainable bond with sangwoo's mom, so he usually goes to meet her after school, while the other kids go to jungbae's pub to hang out with him.
