Gihun is the "9 months in my womb making me suffer and they look like their dad" meme!!!
OMG YES HE IS!!! 🙏🤧
he complains all the time that he grew his lovely daughters inside him for nine months, where they kicked him and sat on his bladder and made him miserable.... and then he pushes out exact copies of their dads
i know he's tired 😭😭😭
thankfully, gayeong looks like him 🙌
#no but seriously i saw a photo of the actress who plays gayeong and someone had put her next to a pic of jj and they WERE similar#asks#yapping 4ever#squid game#seong gi-hun#kim jun-hee#kang sae-byeok#seong ga-yeong#inhun#457#ginho#sangihun#cho sang-woo#hwang in-ho

In the dark AU where Gi-hun joins In-ho (in the interest of doing the best he can for players with his power on the inside), I have Ga-yeong thoughts:
-We see Gi-hun call Ga-yeong and REALLY talk for the first time in a long time. He tells her that he "got a new job" at a very prestigious company, one that necessitates that he travel a lot - he tells her he's a game developer. She's super proud of him. We get to see him visit her and pamper her and be her dad again. In-ho calmly remarks that money fixes everything.
-In-ho gets to see some of the old Gi-hun emerge when he's around his daughter, reanimated like a corpse by the strength of his love for her and his desire (need) not to upset her - the smiley, goofy, exuberant man that he was before the horrors
-In-ho gets attached to Ga-yeong as a foster daughter and is very protective of her; she, unbeknownst to her or her other parents, has a 24/7 personal guard who keeps her safe from a distance (just in case - their line of work is dangerous and makes you plenty of enemies)
-Ga-yeong is the first person (besides the pink soldiers lol) to figure out that her dad is dating In-ho
-She asks her dad if she can play some of the games he makes. His face freezes and then he chuckles and pats her hair, just a little stiffly, and tells her that he'll bring her some toys from his company next time. In-ho has his people throw together a small toy company overnight and has Ga-yeong sent an ensemble of high-end dolls, toy car racetracks, water pistols, etc.
Just... softness in the midst of darkness 🖤💖🖤

Plot twist moment: In-ho sees some of himself in Gi-hun and is rooting for Gi-hun because thats how he became the Frontman? Like he, a former police officer, tried to come back and stop the games after he won but they had stuff on him or something?
These people know *everything* about you when you go in, including everyone in your life (like his brother thats currently trying to find him, or in Gi-hun’s case a daughter living in the U.S. and the families of past players he’s helped) and could 100% use it as leverage to get you to behave until you’re brainwashed enough to believing what you’re doing as the Frontman is good for society.
That’d make this not a taunt or a threat but an actual warning of what the people in charge of this game *will* continue to do if you don’t behave yourself.

you remind me of someone...
seong gi hun x f!reader x male!OC
when you say something that reminds gi hun of someone he used to know
warnings: the pairing is platonic but romantic if you squint. reader is intended to be around twenty years younger than gi hun. death, mentions of death. the OC is nameless, but he could be ali from season one if you want him to be <3
the room is eerily silent, the kind that presses into your chest and makes it hard to breathe. you've been here for four days now, but it feels like a lifetime.
the cold metal walls, the dull hum of the overhead lights, the lingering scent of sweat and fear…it's all becoming too familiar and you hate how you are getting used to it. you sit on one of the lower bunks, your knees pulled to your chest, eyes scanning the room filled with faces both terrified and hardened.
people are mingling in groups now, alliances forming out of necessity rather than trust.
it still plays over in your mind…the red light, green light game. the giant doll’s twisted face, its mechanical eyes scanning the field. the way it turned so slowly, calling out "green light" before its head jerked back around, "red light"... and then the sound of gunfire.
you hadn't fully believed the man, gi-hun, when he shouted warnings about moving on anything thats not green light. 456’s voice had cracked, laced with panic, but something about it struck you.
maybe it was the raw fear in his eyes, the desperation. or maybe you just wanted to believe someone in this nightmare where you shouldn’t believe people at all.
"you saved me back there," you had said quietly to him after the game, when the chaos had thinned and people started realizing what they had signed up for.
he had looked at you, surprised, his face streaked with dirt and sweat.
"i didn't do much. just... didn't want to see more people die."
"still. thank you."
that small exchange had been enough to tether you to him, even if only loosely. now, on day four, you found yourself part of his group. there were five of you…gi-hun, young-il, jung-bae, jun-hee, dae-ho, and you. they had accepted you without much question, which was rare around here.
people had started to realize that anyone could be a threat.
young-il, one of the older men, sat next to you now, fiddling with a piece of bread from his rations. the man’s face was lined with age, but he still looked a little younger. 001’s eyes held a sharpness, a kind of wisdom that made you feel slightly safer.
you glanced at gi-hun across the room, where he sat talking quietly with dae-ho. he caught your eye for a brief second, giving you a soft, almost sad smile. there was something in his look that made your chest ache…a mix of fear, determination, and something else you couldn't quite place.
the six-legged game still haunted you. the grotesque way the players had been strapped together, forced to rely on each other completely. if one leg failed or someone messed up on a game, you died if you didn’t finish on time.
"so, what’s your story?" young-il asked suddenly, pulling you from your thoughts.
you hesitated, fingers tightening around your knees.
"nothing special. just... debts."
"that’s everyone here," he chuckled dryly.
"yeah, but i don’t feel like telling everyone exactly what i owe or why," you said, your tone sharper than intended. you sighed after, feeling bad.
"sorry. it’s just…."
"understandable." he nodded, his eyes softening.
"just know, gi-hun and anyone else right here… we’re not here to stab anyone in the back."
you offered a small smile, grateful but still guarded.
"thanks. i’ll try to remember that."
gi-hun made his way over, sitting down beside you and young-il, his presence was calming in a strange way. he was rough around the edges but seemed to genuinely care about people, which was rare here.
"they’re watching us now," gi-hun said quietly, his eyes flicking toward one of the many black cameras mounted on the walls.
"then we should give them a good show," you joked lightly, though your heart wasn’t in it.
gi-hun chuckled softly. "yeah. maybe one where we all make it out."
you didn’t respond, the hope in his voice too painful to touch but your hand brushed against his for a moment, barely there, before you pulled it back. 456’s eyes met yours, a flicker of something deeper passing between you. in this place, with death around every corner, neither of you said anything about it.
later on before lights out, after everyone was served ‘dinner’, the boiled egg sat heavy in your palm, untouched, its warmth fading as your fingers curled around it. the dim lights overhead cast long shadows across the barracks, where the others sat in their own corners, eating in silence or whispering low conversations.
the thin glass of water by your side barely seemed enough to wash down the lump in your throat.
you stared at the egg, your mind distant. it wasn’t about the food…if anything, the hunger poked at your insides…but the sight of it brought back something heavier. memories.
you and your brother, sitting in your tiny apartment’s kitchen after your parents died, boiling eggs together because it was the only thing left to eat. somehow, it had become your little ritual. the both of you cracking the shells, peeling them messily, and laughing about how something so simple could taste so good.
now, just looking at the egg made your chest ache.
“you gonna eat that?” dae-ho’s voice cut through the fog in your mind. he stood over you, eyeing the egg with raised brows, his own finished quickly like he wasn’t sure when his next meal would come.
you blinked, forcing yourself back into the present. “yeah,” you mumbled, trying to make your voice steady.
“just… not yet.”
he shrugged and dat back down beside jung-bae, but another pair of eyes lingered on you. gi-hun. he sat across from you, holding his own half-eaten egg, but his attention was on your face, not the food.
you tried not to meet his gaze, but it was impossible to ignore. there was something in his eyes, something gentle, and understanding. it made it harder to keep your walls up.
he didn’t say anything right away. instead, he leaned in a little, his voice low so the others wouldn’t hear.
“you okay?” he asked, soft but sincere.
you swallowed hard, feeling the sting of tears building behind your eyes. you shook your head, trying to will them away.
“it’s nothing,” you whispered.
gi-hun didn’t let it go. he set his egg aside and moved closer. “come on. you don’t have to say much, but… i can see it. you’re not okay.”
the tears slipped before you could stop them, a few falling onto your lap. your fingers tightened around the egg. maybe it was the exhaustion or how his voice sounded so real and not like everyone else’s here, but something in you cracked open.
“my brother,” you whispered, your throat tight.
“this stupid egg… ha– it reminded me of him.”
gi-hun’s expression softened even more, his head tilting slightly.
“what happened to him?”
you hesitated, but for the first time since the games started, you felt safe enough to tell someone.
"he… he went missing. almost three years ago now.” your voice trembled as you spoke. “i woke up one morning to a text from him, saying he was going on a trip for a few days. overnight, maybe longer but then… nothing. no more messages. no calls. he just… disappeared.”
gi-hun was silent, listening intently, his brows furrowed.
“i thought maybe he ran away. he had a lot of debt, more than me even. i figured maybe the loan sharks finally scared him off. but… he wouldn’t have left without saying more. he wouldn’t have just… left me like that.” your fingers curled tighter around the egg until you felt the shell start to crack.
“you tried to find him?” gi-hun asked gently.
you nodded, tears sliding down faster now. “i hired private investigators. took out loans just to pay them, but they found nothing. no traces. no body. nothing. it was like he never existed.” your voice broke, and you let out a shaky breath.
“and now i’m stuck here, trying to pay back those loans and all the other debt i racked up… all because i just wanted to find him.”
gi-hun was quiet for a long moment before he finally spoke.
“he sounds like a good brother to you,” he said softly.
you realized he wording. gi hun says ‘sounds’ and not ‘sounded’ like others would’ve.
“he was,” you replied, your voice filled with grief and love.
“he always used to sing this phrase, ‘the world’s cruel, but we can be kind. that’s how we survive.’” you smiled bitterly through the tears, wiping them away with the back of your hand.
however, when you looked at gi-hun again, his face had gone pale. the man’s body was stiff, his eyes wide in a kind of recognition that sent chills down your spine.
“gi-hun?” you asked, your heart beginning to race.
“what is it?”
he didn’t answer right away, still frozen, his mind clearly somewhere far away, locked on something only he could see.
gi-hun’s mind reeled, the words echoing in his head like a haunting melody..
“the world’s cruel, but we can be kind and that’s how we survive.”
he had heard those exact words before, years ago, in the first games he was ever part of. it wasn’t just a passing memory.
it was him. your brother. player 152.
gi-hun could still see him in his mind, smiling even in the darkest moments of the 2020 games, clinging to whatever shards of hope were left. he used to sing that phrase softly, mostly to sang-woo and sae-byeok, like a mantra.
your brother had been a light in the bleakest place gi-hun had ever been in, someone who tried to hold onto kindness even when everything around them was falling apart.
then that moment on the glass bridge which killed him.
gi-hun’s chest tightened, his throat dry as he remembered it all too vividly…how your brother had hesitated on the glass, one wrong step away from falling to his death. sang-woo had been behind him, panicked, desperate.
gi-hun had seen it happen, seen sang-woo push your brother forward without warning. the sound of breaking glass, the flash of betrayal in your brother’s eyes as he fell… those images had haunted gi-hun ever since.
now, you were sitting in front of him, tears falling silently as you clung to the hope that your brother was still out there. alive even after three years.
you didn’t know.
he wanted to tell you. he wanted to explain everything…the truth, the horrible, gut-wrenching truth of how your brother died in these games… but as he opened his mouth, nothing came out.
how could he? how could he shatter you like that?
gi-hun nearly broke at the realization. his hands trembled as he reached for you, unsure at first, then he pulled you into a hug. it was stiff and awkward at first, this wasn’t something gi-hun did often, not here, not in this hellhole, but when you slumped against him, shoulders shaking, he held you tighter.
“i’m sorry,” he murmured, though you had no idea what he really meant.
you clung to him, the warmth of another person breaking through the cold isolation you’d wrapped around yourself since the games started.
“i just… i miss him so much,” you whispered, voice cracking.
gi-hun squeezed his eyes shut, trying to fight the sting there.
he would’ve wanted you to survive, gi-hun thought, remembering the way your brother talked about you during the games. how proud he was of you, how much he missed you.
“you remind me of him,” gi-hun finally said, his voice soft.
you pulled back slightly, confused as you tried to search for an answer in his eyes.
“you… knew him?”
gi-hun hesitated, feeling the weight of the truth pressing down on him.
“not exactly. but… people like him, they don’t just disappear.” it was a half-lie, but the only thing he could manage.
he noticed something else too. the way your eyes crinkled when you were sad, the shape of your nose, even the way you smiled through your tears. you really did look like your older brother.
the fucked-up part? the games had swallowed him whole, just like they were trying to do to you.
how did it end up like this? gi-hun thought bitterly, pulling you back into the hug before you could see the pain on his face. you felt like the last flicker of light from a life that had been extinguished too soon, and now, you were stuck here…alone, in the same hell your brother had died in.
he wasn’t going to let the games take you too.
not if he could help it.

Ga-yeong Learned from the Best
Gi-hun was scolding Ga-yeong after receiving a call from her teacher—she had beaten up a kid and threatened him with the police. In-ho was there and tried to intervene, while Jun-ho, In-ho's brother—who stayed at their house so often he was practically the unannounced adopted son of In-ho and his partner, Gi-hun—was also present.
Gi-hun: (massaging his temples, taking a deep breath) "Alright… who told you to beat him up?"
Ga-yeong:( sniffles, lip trembling) "He pulled my hair first..."
Gi-hun: (deadpan )"No, no, missy, don’t even try that innocent act. You didn’t just hit him. You wrecked him! The teacher said he was rolling on the floor like he got hit by a truck! I had to bow so many times to his parents I think my spine is permanently bent!"
In-ho: (gently) "Gi-hun, maybe—"
Gi-hun: (snapping his head, eyes burning) "IN-HO, I SWEAR ON EVERYTHING HOLY, LET ME FINISH."
Gi-hun: (pointing at Ga-yeong like a prosecutor in court) "AND ANOTHER THING—You didn’t just fight him. You used professional police tactics on that poor kid! Where the hell did you learn that?!"
Ga-yeong hesitates, then slowly glances at In-ho.
Gi-hun: (snaps his gaze) "HWANG. IN-HO."
In-ho: (raising his hands like he’s being arrested) "I swear it wasn’t me!"
Just then, he notices Jun-ho in the background, casually tiptoeing toward the door like a thief
In-ho: (grabbing the back of Jun-ho’s collar) "AHA! I FOUND THE REAL CULPRIT!"
Jun-ho:( glaring, arms crossed) "Oh, come on! That little brat asked for it."
Ga-yeong: (defensively) "Yeah, he totally did!"
Jun-ho: (squinting at her, intrigued) "Wait… did he cry?"
Ga-yeong: (grinning like a gremlin) "Like a baby."
Jun-ho: (gasps dramatically, clutching his chest) "That’s my girl! That means you won!"
Ga-yeong: (smug, crossing her arms) "Obviously. What did you expect? I learned from the best."
Jun-ho: (nodding with pride, wiping an imaginary tear )"I am so proud of you."
Gi-hun stands frozen, gripping his slipper so tightly his knuckles are white, his face an unreadable mix of disbelief, rage, and pure exhaustion. In-ho, meanwhile, is fighting back a proud smile, clearly impressed.
Gi-hun: (slowly, dangerously )"Both of you."
Ga-yeong and Jun-ho freeze, their smug grins vanishing.
Gi-hun: (lifting his slipper like the sword of divine judgment) "GET OVER HERE!"
Chaos erupts. Ga-yeong and Jun-ho SHRIEK, sprinting in opposite directions as Gi-hun barrels after them, slipper swinging wildly. In-ho just sighs, arms crossed, watching the disaster unfold like a dad who’s long accepted his fate.

Guys I'm cooking. I shouldn't have two dishes going at once but listen I want a side project... something streamlined and fast, with short chapters I can publish regularly and just kind of have fun with a silly-ish concept.
Consider: the morning of November 4th, 2024, Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, wakes up in a Seoul apartment he doesn't recognize, and a husband that he very much does. And then his daughter, his wife's child, climbs into the bed with them, alive and nine years old now and the most perfect thing In-ho has ever seen.
Despite the shock, the doubt, the confusion, In-ho finds himself very quickly falling in love with this soft life, this kinder reality where neither he nor Seong Gi-hun ever touched the Games, this world where their daughters walk to school together and Jun-ho stops by for coffee and his mother calls casually to ask what Gi-hun wants for his birthday.
But this Gi-hun knows his husband, and he knows something is wrong. And In-ho knows he can't stay. Not when the gears of time are still churning in another, colder reality.
Meanwhile, Hwang In-ho, husband to goofy, good-hearted Seong Gi-hun, father to Hwang Ji-ah, wakes up in a world of horror and blood, a world where he himself is the villain... a world where his husband hates him.
Thoughts? :)
(Inspired by "it must be counterfeit (i think there's been a glitch)" by thericochetarrow on AO3, whom I asked if I could do an In-ho version and who said that was cool :) Shout-out to that fic)

Rewatched s1e1 of Squid Game today, and was reminded that Gi-hun initially went into the games for Ga-yeong, and not for his mother. He went because she was moving to America, and his mum had said that when she did, Ga-yeong would forget all her Korean, and she and Gi-hun would become strangers who couldn't communicate. But, if he could prove he could support her, he might be able to get her back. Can you really live without her?
And this makes it so much more tragic that, post-victory, he literally couldn't bring himself to spend his money and go and live with her.
It's such a fascinating window into his character that even this, even his initial reason for entering the games, which would benefit not only him but his daughter too, he ultimately deemed to be less important than even the slimmest chance of stopping the games.
It is both breathtakingly selfless (his wants don't matter if he can't save people) and breathtakingly selfish at the same time (he'd rather take a chance on making a big change rather than take a smaller action that would definitely be positive) and LORD his characterisation is just absolutely impeccable.
Heart of gold x gambling addict my beloved.
#seong gi hun#squid game#squid game meta#squid game 2#i feel like fanon is starting to centre the motivation related to his mum's illness more and obviously that is why he went back#and it's a LOVELY parallel with in-ho#but i rewatched the episode and it really struck me that actually it's really important to his character that we remember this#also i do think that if his mum was still alive he'd have paid for her treatment no question#but outside life and death my guy canNOT prioritise#i think if mama was still alive the same thing with ga-yeong would have happened and he wouldn't have got on the plane#he might have just got shouted at for it#seong ga yeong
