Das Sennentuntschi

The Sennentuntschi is a motif of widespread legends in the German speaking parts of the Alps. It occurs in several variations, centered around a basic framework. Alpine herdsmen and dairymen, bored from their existence remote from any civilization during the summer, used to make themselves a female doll. They talked to her, fed her, and took her to bed. Shortly before the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley in autumn, the doll became alive and started talking. She accused the herdsmen and dairymen of the wrongdoings and of forcing themselves on her and her sisters. As a punishment, she forced one of the herdsmen to stay with her on the mountains during the winter. This herdsman would never be seen alive. His body would either be found the next spring shattered at the side of the mountain, or appear decades later when it thawed out of the ice of a glacier. Other legends say that the Sennentuntschi would skin the herdsman alive.

The legends probably arose from phantasies of the valley dwellers of the remote existence of herdsmen and dairymen up on the mountains during the summer. They are also reminiscent of the antique Greek-Roman legend of Pygmalion in which a self-created image of a human being gains life and soul. The “Pygmalion effect” is a term used in psychology to describe the assumption that a creature that resembles a human in stature and behavior has life and experience.

In everyday language, Sennentuntschi has become a metaphor for an artificial creation or product created out of desperation that decent people would not bother with.

Swiss film director Michael Steiner used elements of the legend in his 2010 dark horror movie Sennentuntschi, which won the award of best Swiss film in 2011.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark did NOT prepare me for this with their own grisly version, Harold. A scarecrow coming to life to kill its maker after being used as a punching bag is TAME compared to what it's based on.

I'm not sure what I was supposed to learn from this "charming" tale of a sex doll that gains sentience (those who objectify and commodify others can expect the same in return?) but I can't let it occupy my mind without knowing some other person has seen it. Begone, ye poor poppet!

Auf einer Alp hoch über der Lenzerheide lebt seit Jahr und Tag ein verschrobener Eigenbrötler. Er will nichts mit den Leuten im Tal zu tun haben und mit seiner Flinte verjagt er jeden, der seiner Hütte zu nahe kommt, egal ob Wanderer oder die KESB. Gino wächst mit den Geschichten über den Alten auf und lernt von seinen Eltern, der Alp niemals zu nahe zu kommen. Gino arbeitet schon lange im Sportgeschäft seiner Eltern als das ganze Dorf eines Tages in Aufruhr gerät: Ein junger Mann ist zu dem Alten auf die Alp gezogen. Niemand weiss, in welchem Verhältnis sie zueinander stehen, denn er ist ebenso verschlossen und abweisend. Gino ist fasziniert von dem geheimnisvollen Fremden, der alle paar Wochen im Dorf einkauft und wieder verschwindet. Als sich die Gelegenheit ergibt, nimmt Gino allen Mut zusammen und folgt ihm hinauf auf die Alp.

"Ich meine nur, dass es hunderte Gerüchte über euch gibt im Dorf. Ich möchte nur die Wahrheit wissen." Der Fremde schnaubte und schüttelte den Kopf. Abschätzig sah er Gino an. "Die Wahrheit?" Gino zuckte mit den Schultern und nahm den letzten Schluck aus seiner Wasserflasche. Er hatte immer noch Durst und sah sehnsüchtig zum Brunnen neben der Hütte. "Meine Lieblingstheorie war bislang, dass du ein ukrainischer Callboy bist. Aber das kann nicht sein, oder? Ukrainische Callboys haben keinen innerschweizer Dialekt." Der Fremde lachte auf und befriedigt sah Gino, dass er fast amüsiert wirkte. Schnell versteckte er sich aber wieder hinter seiner Maske. Er nahm das Salz, das Gino für ihn hochgeschleppt hatte und warf einen Blick über die Schultern zur Hütte. Der Vorhang zitterte wieder und ein Schatten bewegte sich hinter dem dreckigen Fenster. "Danke für deine Hilfe", sagte der Fremde. "Aber du solltest jetzt gehen. Grossvater fängt gleich an zu schiessen."
