Also I have to say "but bands are using AI art for their album covers" is not a winning argument.
That band wasn't going to pay you. That band was going to beg somebody's artist brother for a freebie or they were going to have the people in the band who can kind of draw draw something or they were going to use a moody photo someone took with their cellphone. Best possible scenario is "they were going to trade for something from someone in the scene," and this is still the most likely scenario for bands that *give a shit* about that kind of thing.
And I've been the one doing freebie artwork for my musician friends; I've made album covers and done promo shoots, I've drawn logos and I've got a standing offer to make buttons for the cost of materials for every band I've ever played a show with. The people who give a shit in the scene are already doing this because everybody knows that everybody's broke.
I'm certain that there's not *zero* overlap between "bands that can afford to pay artists and photographers to create album artwork" and "bands that are using AI art for their album covers" but if you think "indie musician" is a demographic that has money to spare on commissioned artwork, I'm pretty sure you're mistaken.
Like. Okay, I mean my *big* argument is that AI image generation is fair use, full stop.
But the secondary argument that I've got is that I'm not sure there's a market to have the bottom fall out of.
The person making shitty covers for their amazon romance novel was not going to pay you. They were going to pay someone on fiverr eight dollars *at best* and that's only if they couldn't find a way to DIY.
That band that's trying desperately to sell ten tickets so they can play a show at the cool venue was not going to pay you to do their cover art. Their last fifty bucks just went to covering those tickets because their friends aren't even coming to their free shows. They were going to stage a photoshoot with a cellphone and a timer and someone's sister's selfie stick.
That person who made an AI avatar was not going to pay you for a custom avatar they were going to take a screenshot of your work and use that.
The people who are able to afford to pay artists and who are interested in paying artists are not the people who are replacing artists with AI. The t-shirt dropshippers, the shitty book cover designers, the bland corporate artists, and the art reposting instagram pages were the ones who undercut your market.
If you're concerned that someone is going to use AI to make art that is materially similar to yours and sell it, you're just concerned that someone is going to make art that is materially similar to yours to sell. The concerns about AI doing it are functionally exactly the same as what happens when someone says "wow, I want that on a t-shirt" under your drawing. If someone were to draw a character similar to but distinct from yours with words similar to but distinct from yours and put a link to that on a reblog of your post, that person is not actually infringing on you. They're a shithead, but that's not actually art theft. If they used your character and your words, or if they directly copy the image, that's art theft and you can try to get their post taken down. It's the exact same thing with AI.
The people who care about art and can afford to pay for it are always going to pay for it. Your problem isn't with AI, your problem is with the fact that people don't value art and that's as true now as it was a decade ago.
You are trying to sell a complicated, crocheted sundress made with 100% hand-dyed alpaca wool on Etsy and are complaining that the loose knit acrylic sundress from walmart is undercutting your market. Some people are always going to make the effort to save up and pay for your work because they value the craftsmanship, but those people didn't want to shop at WalMart in the first place. And the ones who value your craftsmanship but just plain can't afford it were going to dig through the bins at a thrift store until they found a crocheted swim cover from the seventies that they could pass off as a dress with a few alterations.

May- K/S Newsletter!
(You can find the complete post in our newsletter. There is quite a lot of info so I only put the highlights!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear K/S Friends, Summer is upon us, and we have mail for you! This time our newsletter is dedicated to only two topics, but they are so important that they warrant their own issue. 1. KiScon 2024 – Hotel Reservations:
We are happy to announce that room registration for KiScon is officially OPEN!
Our venue, the Seattle Airport and Conference Center, is now accepting room reservations for KiScon 2024!
Basic Information About The Rooms:
There are two types of rooms available to book. Rooms with one single king bed have a maximum occupancy of two people. Rooms with two double beds have a maximum occupancy of four people. Our group discounted room rate is $164 per night, plus hotel taxes and fees. Con group rates are good until the room block runs out! (See newsletter for specifics)
2. The KiScon 2024 Art Show & Auction
As KiScon 2024 is a hybrid con with an in-person AND online art show and auction, these traditional and much beloved parts of the convention are more complicated than they were at a purely online or purely in-person event. In the following, we are trying to explain everything as clearly and concisely as we can. Should you still have questions that have not been answered here, please get in touch with us at [email protected].
First things first, the art show and the auction usually have a certain overlap, but you can sell artworks at the auction that are not featured in the art show, and you can submit art to the art show that is not for sale. You do not need to be a registered attendee to submit art to the art show or to the auction!A. The Art Show
The art show aims to showcase a great variety of K/S fanart, trying to convey how rich in talent and creativity our fandom is.
To ensure that both in-person and online attendees can enjoy the show, it will be presented via a slideshow vid that will be accessible online throughout the convention weekend (and afterwards on our website). We will also show it on the big screen during the opening ceremony on Friday night.
In addition there will be space in the Rec Room at the hotel to host a small exhibition and show physical artworks that attendees bring to the convention in person. If you plan to bring physical artworks to the con, please do not forget to submit a photo or scan of it to the art show vid, so that our online members can also marvel at it.
For all submissions to the art show, please use our online form. Deadline: 15 September 2024.
B. The Auction
You do not need to be a registered attendee to offer items in the auction, but only attendees (in-person or online) are able to bid on items.
What is accepted for the auction?
Traditional, physical artworks:paintings, drawings, prints, but also three-dimensional artworks like sculptures, amigurumi, fibre craft, jewellery etc.
Digital artworks or hybrid artworks (e.g. a drawing on paper that you digitally altered afterwards); AI-art is not permitted, without exception. Digital items will be delivered to the buyer as high-resolution files; it is sensible to include clear information what rights the buyer acquires along with the artwork, i.e. what the buyer is allowed to do with the file (e.g. use it as illustration for their fic on the AO3? use it to prettify their website?)
Trek merchandise or collectibles (mugs, T-shirts, plates etc.)
Trek zines (especially rare editions), pro novels (especially hard-to-find ones)
The item must be K/S or K&S or Star Trek in general.
You must be the rightful owner of the item that you offer for sale or have express permission from the owner if you sell it for someone else.
In the case of artworks this means: you do not need to be the artist, but you need to be the current owner of the artwork; the artist’s permission is not needed.
(sorry folks, that's the limit for this post!)

Sorry if you're not the right person to tell, but user midnightsisterart is generating a bunch of "art" via AI and selling it on Etsy as her own (plus I'm pretty sure I spotted at least one outright plagiarized t-shirt design on there). So...make sure not to reblog from her, I guess. Thanks for your commitment to crediting artists and avoiding AI theft
Oh yeah I already had that person blocked for posting nothing but AI garbage in the dark art tag. But a good FYI for others~

Random notes on what i mind and dont mind when it comes to my art
you can trace but only if you show me the results, or are just doing it as practice, and dont post it online without credit, i want to see if something I do inspires someone, and no one should be able to get mad at you over it as long as you credit me as the one you traced
you can heavily reference, but follow the same rules as above! I want! to see! if i inspire people!
if you want to put my art on pinterest make sure it links back to the original link location, and let me know because i want to know if folks like my art enough to put it there
if you want to draw any of my characters let me know! the answer will be yes, but i still want to see the art work and id be happy to see anything featuring my charactesr! and again, send link back to me so folks can find my ocs!
yes i am willing to do art requests but i might ask something in return and im allowed to say no any time i want for any reason, id like to do comission work soon but for now since I don't have that, you can ask and i'll do art requests
please feel free to ask me any questions about my art or characters! i like to talk! a lot!
dont be mean please, im like, trying my best you know?
no ai, please do not put any of my art into ai or ever use my name to generate an ai generated image, if you want art work in my style you very well might be able to get an actual artwork from me just by asking nicely, and that would be a lot more fun and nice right?
these rules only apply to *me* not nessiarily other artists, i have strange rules, i know this, be kind and nice okay?
if you want to put something i made on a piece of merchandise let me know and ask me about it first, if its just a random one off t shirt for yourself? i probably wont mind or i might even go get it made myself so you can have it, but please dont start making a bunch of merch to sell using my art-
please feel free to comment or reblog, or even repost as long as you give credit and let me know youre doing it so i can show my appreciation!
rules may change at any time if anyone abuses my rules or just because i saw something that made me reconsider them but for now thems my rules, I just figured id say this so folks know im one of THE FEW artists who would be chill with these things as long as you give credit and tell me youre doing it because i know thats VERY UNCOMMON (so dont assume anyone else is okay with this! ask! permission! first! please!) : ) thank you!

I agree with your stance on AI art and that the worry and fear-mongering is over-reacting and that it will eventually become obsolete in one way or another, but what's your take on how AI takes up other artists works? I believe an AI can't be it's own thing, so it takes from others, so it's all just a big mess of everyone in a way.
i don't mind answering, since this question is a good one that i'd like to give my opinion on. my personal baseline for what kind of work transformative (ethically speaking, the law here is not a good basis to argue upon) is quite broad. to me, the only kind of art theft that really concerns me is directly taking someone's work, making no changes, adding no new ideas, and passing it off as ones own. i won't deny that it's possible for this to happen with an image generator or gpt, it's called overfilling, but machine learning developers and users agree that this is a major flaw to be overcome, and it is a top priority of the developers prevent overfilling (if it's not "generative" enough it's considered pretty bad, only acceptable for beginner hobbyists).
even still, i think it is a very case by case kind of thing, and i believe that with few exceptions most examples of "art theft" are studios and companies exploiting gig workers, not a comparable scenario. i don't believe a non-overfilling transformer is meaningfully more thieving than an ordinary person taking inspiration from a broad range of art and media they see, it may feel more corporate and calculated, but the issue of corporate art directors taking ideas from the little guys has a storied, and unfortunately in this eceonomic system, inevitable history. i think machine learning programs can certainly be used to do "art theft" directly (for example, those bots that sell t shirts under twitter posts) but it is certainly not an imageGAN issue. now personally while in theory i wouldn't mind my artwork being fed into a training set (it definitely already has been) i DO have many privacy concerns for how my data is being used, particularly to track me and serve me ads. this is a larger issue of corporate and state surveillance that goes far beyond machine learning and certainly beyond gpt type programs tho.
also i think there is too much of an individualism and a lack of perspective when it comes to "art theft" and who "owns" what in the art world because people have not fully unpacked the mindset inherited from a the capitalist ideas of copyright and intellectual property. to me, photos are meant to be collages, music is made to be covered and remixed, techniques are meant to be copied and most relevant to my medium, i don't have an issue with tracing at all. to me it's only bad if the execution is bad, or there is not enough meaning, like all unsuccessful art, which is of course contextual, and depends on how you personally feel about it, not an objective moral or legal statement on whether it is wrong or right (what a run on sentence!)
P. S. if you want to trace my work go ahead, just make it good and make it meaningful or i'm going to make fun of you

I finally sat down and gave "The Great Automatic Grammatizator" a read, per your recommendation. The parallels with AI are apparent, and I did exit the story with some thoughts about the commodification of creativity, but I'm curious how it affected *your* approach to writing and art in general
It's really relevant to AI stuff, but it means something different for me.
I don't usually talk about youtube here because i don't want youtube people coming here nor do i especially want people from here going to my youtube, but its too relevant to leave out, so i'm gonna put this under a cut.
I read "The Great Automatic Grammatizator" in 2012. I'm gonna have to drop a couple fun facts today for anyone thats new; #1 being unfortunately i am a youtuber and #2 being i got human trafficked in 2012 lol. whoops. Anyway. in 2012 I was living in Beijing and I worked at this school where i had a one hour break in the middle of the day ostensibly for lunch but there really wasnt anywhere to go so, i usually just used it to hide in a closet and nap. since i never got enough sleep. and at one point i found a book that was a collection of roald dahl's adult oriented short stories, and it was the first english book id had access to in ages, and it would be like, awhile before i got a vpn and access to most of the english internet again.
So I read it and this is really the story that stuck with me and persisted. I've always been an artist, ever since I was a child. Everyone around me knew I was inevitably going to be one professionally. And when I got back from the US i worked for an on demand t shirt company as a graphic designer working on digital embroidery stuff. and then, of course, later on i'd become a youtube animator.
The difference between what I do now and what I did when I was younger is that art is my job now. Thats my income. Thats whether I eat or not. Art for money always comes before art for arts sake. I can't count the amount of times I've had something I really wanted to invest my time in- like Bruno is Orange, if you've ever seen it, which took me months- and I just can't justify it. I don't have the time for that kind of thing. If I'm making art, it has to prioritize profit. it just does. and that sucks out everything i like about art and leaves behind a shell where i no longer do. It's not just that I can't make whatever I want, its that I always have to edit what I DO want into something thats more palatable, more widely appealing, more tailored to my audience. I can't risk making something that might alienate them. I joke all the time about how my subscribers are begging me to stop posting transformers but. unironically, i DO lose subscribers every single time i post transformers. every time.
theres a difference between being a successful artist and being a successful artist commercially. you're making a product. you're making content.
what all that leads to is that golden contract. it's money for your morals. its taking the easy way out at the expense of your soul. its selling out for safety and what a relief that is, but you will never sleep at night again.
I've joked before about how I've turned down a RAID sponsorship but- i have. i did actually do that. hellofresh literally sends me a daily email about partnership its getting annoying. but i don't... i don't take sponsorships. its not the idea of sponsors i hate, its that every potential sponsor is a golden contract.
i think RAID should be illegal. I think its gambling and selling gambling to kids should be a crime. I think it needs to be under the same restrictions all gambling is. I think selling gambling addictions to children is evil and I've spoken about this at length before. Could I accept money to tell my audience to download it? You're not just playing an ad, you are putting your face on it, its your endorsement. you are telling people to do it. And youtubers joke about how its basically a meme at this point, its not like anyone actually downloads it, but- yes they do? if they didnt they wouldnt keep sponsoring people. They're making a profit. they're getting new users. Can I knowingly promote with my own words and my own mouth something I think is so heinous because im being paid for it?
that goes for basically all of them. fuck audible and amazon, fuck raycons, fuck honey, fuck dollar shave club and nord vpn and that overpriced cereal and the mattresses and all of it. You can look into all of them but theyre rife with cheap garbage sold at jacked up prices no better than dropshipping or predatory marketing practices or deceptive advertising or just straight up being no better than scams. Do you remember the esteemed titles situation recently? huge youtubers were involved with promoting this massive scam that they could have found out was scam with like twenty minutes of googling, but... no one did.
its the golden contract. take the money and bite your tongue. sell out and feel safe again, at the expense of the world around you. let someone else move your hand and place words in your mouth, be a vessel of capitalism with one hand while denouncing it with the other like the hypocrite you have to be.
i cant do it and sleep at night. i had a rough time in beijing. i learned how to be hungry there, and I learned the hard way that everyone will do things they never believed they could or would when theyre hungry. So when I say it, I know what I mean, I know what starving feels like and I know what its like to wear three jackets to bed during a blizzard and shiver all night without heat or electricity, and I know what its like to hike miles in the snow to work, and I know what its like to work on christmas and to work with a fever and to be afraid of people you work with. i know exactly what im saying when i say i'd rather starve than have a full cabinet at the expense of my integrity. ive fucked up a lot in my life and ive done a lot of things i regret, but not on purpose. i wont walk headlong into something i know is wrong on purpose. and i know that im not the only one that suffers. i have friends now. no one is going to let me go hungry this time. no one is going to let me be homeless or starve to death. which means when i cant take care of myself, someone else has to help me. im putting that on everyone around me and im not proud of it.
turning down that golden contract doesnt just impact you. it impacts everyone around you. i could make more money making outrage content on the internet but i won't. its that last line. "Give us strength, oh lord, to let our children starve" that always comes back to me. take the contract, feed your family. go to hell. turn it down and inflict suffering on yourself and those around you but refuse to make the world a worse place to live in. its the "press the button to get a million dollars, but someone somewhere dies" dilemma but on a small scale, death by a thousand cuts.
so thats what its about. thats what it means.

The main problem I have with AI compared to a lot of other remix medias, is that a lot of people using it aren't being truthful about it being remixed. In fact, I would argue that a creative re-use of IP is not the point of AI-generated imagery. Collage, fan creations, remixes, edits, blackout poetry, found media art, kit-bashing, and even memes are all in a dialogue with their original works. Knowing that they are made from previous works is part of experiencing the new work. It is usually acknowledged somewhere (or self-evident) and part of what makes these works interesting is the audience's ability to appreciate the transformation of the old into the new.
AI-generated art hides the transformation and would like to pretend its not there, as if AI is a magic box that generates art from the ether instead of carefully training a machine to be able to make pieces that often look distinctly like another artist's work on purpose, by use of keywords referencing that artist by name.
Humans can do this too. When humans train themselves to create pieces in another artist's style and don't disclose that fact so that they can trade on another artist's fame for gain, we call that forgery.
There are legitimate uses of aping another artist. It's fun. A good way to study art techniques. And sometimes you really just want to see your ocs in a Leyendecker pastiche piece. And you know what, Leyendecker is well dead so it doesn't hurt him for us to do that. And I really have no issue with people that want to (openly) use AI to make fun little pieces for themselves.
Even professional pastiche is a thing that happens quite often! But usually it is in dialogue with the original. We riff on certain pieces and styles because of the connection it makes in the audience's mind. AI-generated pieces can do this, sure, but again, this doesn't seem like how it's being used in much of what I have seen. I've seen the galleries of AI-generated work for sale that are just hundreds of images of popular subject matters in a popular style. It feels gross and hollow. Like when a company rips off a trending piece of art online to slap on t-shirts. They could have made a deal with the original artist, but it was quicker and cheaper for them not to. This is basically what AI is doing on a much larger scale.
When you read the interviews with people who make these AI, they don't think of AI as a interesting remix tool. They tend to think of it as solving a labor problem. "Wouldn't it be nice to be free of the labor of creating art? Isn't it nice we've saved you from having to do this horrible, time-consuming, onerous task of making art?"
And the artists are like "Actually, I liked doing that. I put a lot of time into developing these skills and my style. It's work I'm good at doing and find satisfying to do!"
And the tech folks are like, "That's confusing. Wouldn't you rather program stuff?"
And the executives and management folks are like "Yay, if a computer churns this out, it won't cost as much money! Much cheaper to get the AI Prompt Wranglers to do this than to pay Big Name Artist (whose style will sell our product!) to actually work for us!"
And thus the tech folks are content that they have solved another problem and made the world a better place.
So, yeah, I don't think the labor rights and industry problems are an issue alongside the AI problem. They are the AI problem.
anyway ai discourse is kicking off on my dash again and i just want to reiterate that i fully and 100% believe that "cutting up and remixing pre-existing intellectual property without prior permission" should never be made illegal and it would be utterly horrifying if the united states attempted to criminalize it.

Future Predictions
Tumblr media
Have you thought about going to therapy over your alcoholic step dad beating you?
Three wars later…..
BRRROOOO I swear that’s the fourth time I’ve stabbed that same guy in the eyes……..
Anyway, back to the Future
The holy trinity of AI, Cold Fusion, and stateless virtual currency is upon us. Not in the real sense, hence AI is an algorithm, cold fusion is a toxic academics paradise, and Crypto is a neo-hippie’s cosmopolitan interpretation of revolution. But the nuts and bolts are there.
AI for lack of a better word will make the arts and craft community more personal fulfillment orientated, as the generic holocaust of fake its, and half baked its, wither in agony to the social projection of fiver savants, or the new/old age paper- run side-hustle of iPad button ushers.
We have become a society of button pushers; but in the death of the old heralds the new, a virtual Woodstock as it were, of semi-professional social virtual relationships with subscription platforms. Information is free and abundant, and it seem the banking democratic failure is the information highways success.
You can now learn to bake a cake and watch the chef’s asshole at the same time from the other side of the planet, and that my friends, is irony. Every small shithole apartment, dingey bedroom, or hollow soulless mansion, is a spaceship traveling through the intergalactic virtual twilight zone, of sarcasm and fuckery.
Everyone has an opinion, everyone is selling something, and everyone cool, important, and unique. It is just me and my man-bun against the world, but what happens if I am captured in this new dating utopia, and become domesticated. Will my man-bun tilt to the side like porpoises trapped in a chlorinated pool, one can only imagine.
Tumblr media
There are only two versions of the future based on the holy trinity of AI, Cold Fusion, and Crypto.
One, there will be virtual classes of algorithm discrimination, based on grades, criminal and family profiles, wealth, nationality, and geographic location. This is a Blade Runner futurism come to full fruition, and you will hump a state sponsored bot that runs on premium cold fusion credits limitedly sourced only from low skilled work credits as a virtual slave of limitations.
Two, a classless world of abundance and a technological nature improving utopia that runs on absolute efficiency. The ‘dating Olympics,’ will run every two years where sponsored players will do the rounds and civilians can win tickets to do cameos. It will probably sound like “I orgasm to blue Gatorade, the drink that gets me through at top level gang bangs. Every forth bottle purchased wins you a cum rag t-shirt.”
I just think its ironic that only one of these versions sounds slightly familiar.
Tumblr media
A better version would be a reality dating show, where 30 guys that are fixated on MILF’s; date 30 woman on an island, but only one woman is a serial killer that uses her nurture behavior to slip men into a deep slumber and then kill them based on her period cycle, because its naturally familiar.
But let’s take it one step further, an algorithm predicts one to be her soulmate, and another to be the type of person that bullied her in high school.  The show would ask the moral question is it better to kill the goodness inside you to save yourself, or the badness inside you and free all the people.
With that said, one could be a mystery prize where she wins a fish farm or something and feeds the body into a woodchipper and sprays the fish with their first snack…… Perhaps her future son, because incest is so hot right  now, and so ancient covid injection de-evolved the womb.
Afterall, it is appropriate behaviour for a closed loop system on a spaceship, but I always did like the term spaceship earth…..

Oh for fucks sake
youtube
And yes, I have watched the entire video.
These AI bros are so fucking pathetic that instead of putting in any hard work to learn how to draw something, they just let the machine do all the work for them to hide their bitter jealousy. The speedpaints aren't even that good. It's not smooth enough, it just looks like someone took a screenshot every 2 minutes. Also nobody changes their drawing in the sketch layer that much unless they have no idea what to draw but want to draw something.
Why isn't there some kind of law to restrict the use of AI? Are we all just so stupid that we're going to let these art snatchers take over our entire media? Don't even get me started on deepfakes. Like, no watermarks? No mandatory disclaimer? Nothing? The only AI tool that I can tolerate is Craiyon because it's images are not that good and should be strictly used for shitposts only. I don't like how you gen put the image you generated onto a t-shirt, but at least there's a watermark on it. Oh and that animation colour filler tool thing that I heard about a while ago. That'll be so useful for animators like me who work by themselves.
And to all the AI bros that keep fucking up my for you page on tumblr with the art tags: you are all pathetic, stupid, wastes of space that should learn to do something that isn't wasting your life on the internet chasing likes and commissions to hide how insecure you feel and that your only source of validation that you feel is screwing over other people with scams. Either that or your ego is so high, you refuse to accept that you don't have any skills apart from chucking 4 words into an image generator. One or the other.
Also why does every AI thing apart from basic chat gpt and craiyon cost money? I know it's for the servers but honestly, the audacity to rip free stuff on the internet and sell it all in one.
