Does anybody else with AuDHD struggle with RSD to the point of having really bad brain days or weeks where y'all end up literally convincing y'allselves that everybody hates you and that nobody can tolerate your presence?
Just asking for a friend here....

@eliza-married-a-gay-icarus, this is literally me. Please help, I am literally losing my grip.
i used to be so good at writing strong, thoroughly-researched, thoroughly-edited essays.
as a kid in hs, my teacher literally came up to me, holding my 40 page essay on the intersection of the European witch hunts and capitalism/exploitation/gender roles (it was supposed to be 7 pages...whoops) and went like "this is literally a master's-degree level thesis. what are you doing?? you could literally use this as your final dissertation in a master's program, what the fuck."
NOW??? NOW?? you'd think I'd be oh so skilled. but alas. i can barely piece together two ideas. adhd skill-regression is so so real. im SOBBING

Why self-diagnosed autistics are valid
Tumblr media
medical diagnosis can be expensive
humans are the experts on their own minds
family may prevent assessment
diagnosis criteria is a poor checklist of stereotypes
diagnosis criteria ignores gender, race, sexuality, culture & more
medical diagnosis confirms autism, but doesn't create it
discrimination within the medical profession may prevent diagnosis.
Assessment waiting lists often long
medical trauma may make assessment unfeasible

Neurodivergent people are never undiagnosed. We are misdiagnosed. Our symptoms don't go unnoticed, and people will always attribute them to some sort of cause. They'll just attribute them to personality and blame the individual for their symptoms.
For example. My autism is not undiagnosed, it's been misdiagnosed as "too sensitive," "awkward," "rude," "obsessive," and "too intense." My brother's adhd wasn't undiagnosed, it was misdiagnosed as "lazy," "impulsive," "annoying," and "can't seem to get any work done."
Growing up without a diagnosis is growing up believing that you are to blame for your differentness. Your symptoms are a personality flaw. You are diagnosed by everyone around you as "weird."
Edit: Some people have pointed out that I'm using the word misdiagnosis here rather loosely. I'm aware that it isn't quite correct definitionally, and I don't mean to say that medical misdiagnosis and the type of social misattribution I'm talking about are identical--just that they are related phenomena, and neurodivergent people are often victims of one or both. There isn't an exact term for what I'm talking about here, so I used the closest one I knew of. Terminology is important and some words need to be used with precision to retain their influence. At the same time, sometimes meanings change, and bending words to fit new circumstances is a natural way that language evolves. I'm not sure which situation this falls under, so while I don't want to change my post (not even sure what to change it to), I thought I'd edit and add clarification. Additional feedback on this is welcome.

I don't have ADHD .... officially, because the hoops to jump through to get diagnosis and help is all the things that are impossible for people with ADHD. Thanks, I hate it.
‘i don’t have adhd but this adhd post is #relateable’
(the majority of this post is pulled from an older reblog I did on my main, @vantasticmess.)
it’s ADHD Awareness Month so here’s a post about it. :D
I’ve gotten sooo many ‘#not adhd but man i feel this’ tags on adhd posts i’ve made, and tbh tags of this type drive me nuts (b/c they make me doubt the validity of my diagnosis.)
but if you, a not-adhd person, see a post about adhd experiences and relate to it, please consider the following:
maybe you do have adhd?
maybe it’s because most things that adhd people experience are things that most everyone experiences sometimes, only they experience it all the time.
at its heart, adhd is the inability to pick what your attention is locked onto, sometimes combined with a need to move constantly (hyperactivity).  This manifests as:
lively internal life + rapid thought & intuitive leaps of cognition - good when being creative, bad when trying to make a logical decision
overthinking things
impulsive behavior
short attention span + being easily distracted
unnaturally long attention span + inability to notice outside stimuli
short term memory dysfunction
executive dysfunction
no sense of priority (everything is equally important)
no sense of time in relation to self (cannot effectively tell how long an activity will take or develop a sense of urgency based on a deadline until the deadline is perilously close or already passed)
failure to follow through (leaving work incomplete)
forgetting to remember/remembering tasks at inappropriate times
intrusive thoughts
And pretty much everyone experiences one or all of these things at times, and these symptoms can spring from other causes than ADHD (for instance, executive dysfunction accompanies depression and anxiety as well).
But adhd people have this happen so constantly and so intrusively that we cannot complete basic tasks, even if we want to:
The only thing consistent about us is inconsistent results: sometimes we’re on time, sometimes we’re not. sometimes we’re reliable, sometimes we’re not. sometimes we’re studious, sometimes we’re not … (and trust me we’re not enjoying it any more than you are)
We fail classes, we drop out of college, we lose jobs, and no matter how much we try, we cannot fix it.
We can’t just remove distractions - our brains are a distraction.
We can’t just ‘try harder’ - our wayward mind might be focusing on our studying today, but tomorrow it might not. The same effort level will have wildly different results on different days because our attention cooperated … or didn’t.
it is literally impossible for us to choose our focus. pretty much ever.
it pisses off our friends, it pisses off our bosses, it pisses off our family, and it even pisses off ourselves. it affects every part of our life.
So adhd shitposts can be pretty relateable, even if you don’t have adhd.  But if this list sounds familiar - if the contents of it happen to you to the point that you’re getting in trouble at school or your job and you’re pissing off your friends? might be worth looking into what’s going on with you.

since autism often involves strict planning and routine whereas adhd often cannot function under such plans and routines, do audhd people have two wolves inside them who are constantly fighting like. "we NEED a plan" and "there will be NO PLAN or there will be NO MOTIVATION"

I cannot stress how important getting a diagnosis is for any mental disorder/disability (for anyone who needs it/wants it). And I also cannot stress how much of a privilege it is for people to get an official diagnosis. Self diagnosis is valid. Sincerely, a professionally diagnosed autistic person.

Some of you genuinely seem to believe neurotypical people are mindless conformity drones like the villains in a Tim Burton movie who are happy all the time with no inner life & that anyone who has any thoughts about the world around them at all has a mental illness. You are no better than the 12 yo boys who call service workers NPCs. Actually I’d argue you’re worse because at least those people are joking.

I created an AuDHD playlist (though a lot of songs don't actually talk about either)
Some of the songs are honestly just there because they are a vibe or because they remind me of burnout and that kind of thing, so feel free to listen to it if you like!

I feel like I owe everyone an explanation for my near social media death (hiatus is a better word I guess). Suffice to say my motivation/focus hit an all time low, and a couple of very well placed distractions didn’t help keep me on track. On the other hand, despite all of the… shit out there… my mental health otherwise feels better. Or as well as it can in the absence of energy and motivation. Can’t have it all!
I have managed to get a little done after all this time. Two comms on the slab and a new friend on the way. My fingers are crossed for a lot of things, and I gotta fight to keep putting in the work!

"just be yourself" has always been one of my most hated things to hear from someone. it may sound simple and easy to you, but when you grew up never able formed a single solid personality (because you grew up autistic or for some other reason) and/or have always felt more like 20 different personalities in a trench coat who fight over who is supposed to be in charge, that "simple" advice is so much less simple.....it can even seem impossible.

Whether you have been officially diagnosed or self diagnosed, you are valid!
Not everyone has access to getting diagnosed by a medical professional or may not see any benefit to getting officially diagnosed or maybe there are other reasons but this doesn’t make their experience less valid.
