“Cynte?”
“Yes, Karis?”
“Do you think we’re partners in every universe?”
“Why do you bring up the parallel theory?”
“Oh, no reason, it’s just an idea…”
“Well, if we’re considering the parallel universe theory, then no. We aren’t.”
“Cynte, you’re thinking about this scientifically~”
“Well, I was going to say… uh…”
“Yes?”
“I’m glad I’m in this one.”

Hello! I’ve always been curious about the “human in a space shuttle somehow ends up on a cybertronian ship and all the bots are trying to figure out what this random metal this is while the human is terrified” plot.
It would be interesting to see it played out with any character, but for the sake of direction, I’d like to request this with the Lost Light Crew?
It could be vore if that’s what you feel like wrong at the time, but I’d also go for some good ‘ol fearplay.
I apologize if this is too vague, have a good day/night and I love your writing!
Thank you for the request Glitch! I hope this is up to your expectations! I hope you don't mind that I picked specific members of the Lost Light crew to include in this story. Feedback is always appreciated! Have a great day/night as well! :D
Doctor’s (And Scientist’s) Orders
Pairing: IDW Ratchet, IDW Perceptor, and IDW First Aid x Human Reader
Word Count: 3115

Summary: You are a teacher who is being sent from Earth to a colony on Mars. A new life as an educator for the red planet’s children is on your horizon…until you are thrown terribly off course and end up in the bowels of the Lost Light. All seems lost for you when you find yourself injured and cut off from human society, at the mercy of the three Cybertronians who end up finding you and taking you in, whether you want them to or not.
The first thing you hear when you come to is the horrid screeching of your ship's alarms.
You groan and sit up. Smoke and flickering emergency lights greet you when you open your eyes. Electricity sparks from the stasis tank you were asleep in. Gas spurts from the ceiling, and everything is strewn about with the chaotic air of a tornado that just tore through an entire town.
“Warning,” your ship’s AI urgently alerts. “Breach detected. Damage is collateral. Warning-warning-” It sputters and fizzles out.
You rub the back of your head and feel something warm and sticky coat your palm. When you pull your hand back to take a closer look, you see blood.
Shit. That’s not good.
Standing up makes you feel like you are going to puke. Your head throbs and every breath you take sends piercing pain through your chest. Dragging yourself out of the stasis pod takes longer than it should while black spots dot your vision as you stumble to the dashboard and press your hands against it. “Run ship diagnostics,” you manage to rasp. The voice that struggles to exit your mouth is one you hardly recognize. It is thin and strewn with violent coughs. A metallic taste coats your tongue. More blood.
The AI glitches as it attempts to answer you. “Severe damage to hull. Severe damage to engines. Severe damage to thrusters. Life support online, but rapidly depleting. Escape pod offline.”
“Shit,” you breathe. “Try contacting Earth control.”
“Communications systems offline. Attempting self-repairs. Current status…5%.”
“How long until repairs are complete?”
“Estimations indicate repairs will be completed in…5 days.”
Not good. Not good at all. You push yourself away from the dashboard and take in all that has happened. This was not how the mission was supposed to go. When you were chosen to be sent to Earth’s Mars colony as a teacher for the young children growing up on the red planet, you thought it would be a smooth seven month trip with you peacefully slumbering away in stasis. You were supposed to be woken up by fellow human beings, not a devastating crash resulting in your ship being decimated. Something must have thrown you off course. A freak asteroid strike probably. Which begs the question…where exactly are you?
Ignoring how much pain you are in, you hobble through the remains of the vessel and head for the airlock doors. They remain tightly shut when you make it to them, hiding the knowledge of where you are from view. “Open the doors,” you call out to the ship.
“Warning. Remaining onboard is strongly recommended. Current exterior environment is unknown.”
“Override. Open the doors.”
The doors whoosh apart. You know there’s oxygen outside. If there hadn’t been, the ship would have prevented you from even entering the airlock chamber in the first place. Stepping off, you expect to see the barren landscape of Mars, or the alien environment of some other planet you might have ended up on. Part of you thinks you might still be on Earth; perhaps something went wrong with the ship before you could even break the Troposphere.
What you see surprises you. You are in some sort of…massive cargo hold.
Gigantic metal crates surround you, most of them exuding a pinkish glow. There are lights on the ceiling far above you, but they are dim, and serve little aid in giving you an estimate of just how large this place is. Turning in a circle, you feel awe fill you. “Yeah,” you murmur to yourself. “The ship definitely didn’t crash on Mars.”
Speaking of your ship…you take in the damage. It's an absolute mess of warped, crippled metal doomed to remain collapsed on its side until self-repairs are complete. It would take days, maybe even weeks, for damage of this caliber to be fixed beyond the communications systems. With no way to contact Earth or Mars, you truly are stuck.
You close your eyes and pinch the bridge of your nose. Calm. You are calm. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. Yes, your ship is destroyed. Yes, you are suffering from critical wounds. Yes, you are in an unknown place with seemingly no way out. But you're alive. That’s what matters. And now you just have to survive for five more days.
You hear thumping in the distance.
It takes you a moment to register the pattern of heavy steps that are coming towards you. It’s something alive, you realize with dawning horror. Wherever you are, you have obviously made quite a racket, and now this planet’s local faunal residents are going to seek you out. There’s no way for you to know exactly what sorts of animals live here; any technology you might have used to your advantage is directly connected to the ship. With the ship offline, thus go the tools as well. You are completely in the dark, relying only on the little information about alien lifeforms you have to keep you safe.
You don’t need that information to know you have to hide right now.
You scurry back into the ship, biting back a shout of pain. God, there’s pain everywhere. How have you not passed out yet? Adrenaline does wonders for the human body, you sourly think to yourself when you have to lean against the wall to catch your breath. A hacking cough swells within your chest. When you cover your mouth with your elbow and release it, blood is splattered over your suit sleeve.
That’s when you hear the growling.
It’s unlike anything you have ever heard before. You’ve studied a multitude of animals. You’ve heard big cats roar, wolves howl, hyenas cackle, and birds screech. This is not a growl you can associate with any of those. It…holds similar qualities. But there’s something about it that remains blatantly off.
It sounds strangely like the growl of a machine.
You look outside of the airlock doors, and something huge lumbers out from behind a stack of crates. The first things your brain registers are its red and white armor platings, its bright blue eyes, and the horn-like finials extending from its forehead. It’s humanoid, yet possesses qualities that remove it from any such grouping. This thing is definitely not like you in any sort of way beyond having a face and walking on two legs.
“It’s…a robot,” you whisper. It’s a giant fucking robot moving all on its own, and looking none too happy to be here.
The mechanical creature snarls, lips upturning to reveal sharp canines that are probably longer than your arms. It hasn’t noticed you yet. Its focus is trained on the datapad it holds in its hands. Your mind is blown. This is obviously a member of a clearly intelligent race. Have you just discovered a new extraterrestrial species?
The robot looks up. At first, its eyes scan the crates around you, and it doesn't seem to notice the little ship nestled between them. You remain still, prey instinct taking its course and demanding you freeze where you are. Hopefully it will just move on…
It backtracks, and to your utter horror, it makes direct eye contact with you.
Fucking shit, you think.
The robot stares at you with an expression of pure shock. You stare right back with an equal amount of terror.
It steps towards you. That’s all it takes for you to scream at the ship. “Close the airlock doors! Close them now!”
The doors slam shut. You hear a shout from the robot, and everything shakes as it thunders forward. You stumble and fall with agony ripping through your poor body when you make contact with the floor. The cry that leaves you is riddled with pain.
“A-Activate self-defense protocol!” you order the ship.
“Self-defense protocols offline,” it says back.
“Well, how long until they are online?!”
“Estimated time equals…ten hours.”
“That’s not enough!” you scream rawly.
A gentle tapping echos from the other side of the doors.
You push yourself back, heart pounding as you listen to the robot move all around you. It’s growling softly to itself, and you can hear it touching the ship, running massive mechanical fingers across the walls that act as the only barrier between you and potential doom.
You don’t know what to do. Panic makes you frantic and you desperately try to think of how you can get yourself away from the monster outside. You have no way to defend yourself. You can’t even run. This thing wants you out, and you know it has the power to rip your ship apart in order to get to you if it wishes for it.
Suddenly, everything rocks. Your stomach drops when the entire ship shakes and you feel it being lifted into the air. Realization of what is happening hits you: it’s picking it up. If it can’t get you, it’ll just have to take everything.
“Nononono!” you cry out. The ship tips a little, and you slam into a wall with a grunt. “Stop!” You bang your fists against the metal. “Put it down! Put it down now!”
The robot simply growls in reply. You don’t even know if it hears you. There’s nothing you can do to stop this. You slump back and cover your face as hot, helpless tears finally begin running down your cheeks.
“What exactly is it?” First Aid asks as he peers down at the mangled hunk of metal sitting before them on the medibay berth.
“It’s a ship,” Perceptor flatly replies with a silent “What else would it be?” evident in his tone.
“This is a ship?” First Aid looks horrified. “But it's completely destroyed! How could it have gotten here?”
“It must have crashed during our last refueling.” Perceptor lays his servos over the top of the ship, examining it closely. He huffs and straightens, looking at Ratchet. “Where did you find it?”
“The cargo hold,” the medic replies. “I was down there searching for some extra medical supplies I know we have stored. I wouldn’t have seen it if it hadn’t been for what’s inside.”
“There’s something alive in there?” First Aid gasps.
“A human,” Ratchet replies. “It locked itself inside when it saw me.”
“Impossible.” Perceptor shakes his helm. “Humans are an endangered species that only occupy a small sector of a primitive solar system. They don’t have the technology to make it this far out in space.”
“Well, clearly they do. I know what I saw. These old optics aren’t that far gone.” Ratchet raps his knuckles gently against the ship. All three mechs have to lean in close so they can hear the soft squeak from inside.
“How do we get it out?” First Aid asks. “It could be hurt!”
“It is hurt,” Ratchet answers. “I saw it before it hid itself away. I don’t know how severe the injuries are, but I know it's in pain.”
“Then what are we waiting for? We need to help it!” First Aid presses his forehelm against the ship and whispers softly. “Hello, little human? Please don’t be afraid! We aren’t going to hurt you!”
A whimper is all he gains in reply.
Perceptor crosses his arms. “I can force it out, but you won’t like how I do it.”
“You can’t hurt it,” Ratchet sharply snaps. “That would be cruel.”
“I’m not going to hurt it,” the scientist bites back. “I’m simply going to pump a nontoxic gas into the ship that will cause it to eventually lose consciousness. It will have no choice but to come out, and then we can go on from there.”
“Are…are you sure?” First Aid wrings his servos nervously. “I don’t want it to be scared of us.”
“Whether it’s scared of us or not doesn’t matter,” Ratchet says. “It’s injured, and if we don’t do something, it’ll succumb to those injuries. It’ll understand we don’t want to hurt it after we patch it up.” He nods to Perceptor. “Go ahead, smoke it out.”
The scientist’s right servo transforms into a syringe. Ratchet watches with anxiousness churning in his tank as Perceptor presses his left index digit against the side of the ship and presses a small hole straight through with little resistance to stop him. A terrified shout from the human within causes First Aid to whimper.
Perceptor sticks the upper part of the syringe into the hole, pumping gas into the ship and pulling it back out after a moment, wisps of vapor trailing from the tip. A few seconds later Ratchet hears a string of weak coughs from inside. There is a tense moment where all three of them stand there, and then the doors open and you stumble out with a cloud of gas nearly enveloping your tiny form. You wheeze into your servos, then notice the mechs staring at you and try sprinting right back into the ship. Perceptor cuts you off, slamming his servo down and pinning you under his digits before dragging you back even though you yelp and thrash. You squirm one last time in his grip before suddenly going limp.
Perceptor gently shifts you to lie in the center of his palm. For a terrifying moment, Ratchet thinks you are offline when he sees how still you are with your optics closed. But then his sensors pick up on the rapid beating of your organic spark, and he relaxes. Not dead. Just simply unconscious.
“Give it here.” He holds out a waiting servo. Perceptor hands you over; you are given a quick look-over as Ratchet scans your body. There is a nasty cut on the back of your helm, and your vents are gravely bruised with terrible red marks. “Internal bleeding,” he mutters. “As well as external wounds. The crash really messed it up.” He curls his digits lightly over you and brushes his thumb over your forehead. “Doesn’t have a fever though, which is good. Damage is minimal, nothing life threatening. I can have it fixed in a few hours.”
“You know how to heal organics?” First Aid questions.
“I’ve been around for a long time. War changes you. I’ve had my equal share of saving Decepticon-ravaged planets inhabited by organics as well as machines.” Ratchet walks over to another berth, being careful not to jostle you too much. “First Aid, go grab the restrainers. We’ll have to keep it still so it doesn’t accidentally hurt itself when it wakes up.”
“You’ll have to keep it sedated too,” Perceptor says. “I can help with that. Just a little puff of the gas will keep it asleep.”
“Thank you,” Ratchet says, then pauses. “Listen. Don’t tell anyone about this yet. I don’t want everyone flocking into the medibay and stressing it out. We could accidentally scare this thing to death if we aren’t careful.”
“I won’t.” Perceptor nods. “Just…make sure it heals properly. I don’t doubt your expertise, but…” He looks down at you, and his optics soften. “It hurts my spark to see something so small in so much pain.”
First Aid returns with the restrainer. It’s a small mechanism that runs on magnetic power, created by the Lost Light’s resident mad scientist, Brainstorm himself. Ratchet places it directly over your lax form. With a quiet beep, it presses lightly over your midsection, and magnetic bindings weigh down your ankles and wrists. Seeing you trapped like this makes him feel guilty. This obviously isn’t going to be something you will like when you wake up. But there’s no other way for this to go. You won’t understand his good intentions until he heals you. Until then, he has to keep you still.
He grabs a small serum of glowing blue liquid and bends over you, gently pinching your little fleshy cheeks and working your intake open. “C’mon little one, drink up,” he whispers when he carefully forces the liquid down your throat. He sees your faceplate tighten with discomfort, but your throat pulses as you subconsciously swallow. “There you go. Good human, good human.”
“What are you giving it?” First Aid asks.
“Something I learned to make back in my early days,” he replies. “It heals from the inside. Works on both organics and machines.” He pats your cheeks praisingly and draws away. “There. That should help with the bleeding. It’ll be fine now. I’ll continue to monitor it over the next few days.”
First Aid exhales a relieved sigh. Perceptor reaches out a tentative hand and brushes your hair away from your closed optics. “It’s so small…so soft…”
“We have to be careful with it,” First Aid frets. “We don’t want it to break.”
“Listen.” Ratchet’s tone hardens authoritatively. “I said this before, but I’ll say it again. We have to keep this between the three of us. Don’t tell anyone about a human being in here.”
“But what about the captain?” First Aid asks. “Shouldn’t he know?”
“The captain can’t know. If he finds out there's a human on the ship, he’ll go nuts with excitement and probably end up accidentally crushing the poor thing. Until I confirm it’s not going to drop dead at any moment, we keep it a secret. Got it?”
Both bots nod. Ratchet nods with them. “Alright. I’m going to stay here and make sure it’s condition remains stable. You can come back tomorrow to check in on it and see how it’s doing.”
Perceptor dips his head and leaves without another word. First Aid lingers, optics never leaving you.
“It’ll be fine,” Ratchet reassures him. “I’ll take care of it. Go recharge.”
It takes a lot for the other medic to step back and exit the medibay. Ratchet watches him go, then sighs and drags a servo over his faceplate. Becoming the caretaker of an injured organic lifeform was not something he had planned for today. Primus, how the hell am I going to tell Rodimus?
A soft noise drags his attention away from the alarming thought of what might happen if the extroverted captain learns about his new “crewmate.” He looks down at you and startles a bit. Your eyes, foggy and unfocused, are staring right at him. There’s a fatigued expression of utter terror on your face that once again has his spark feeling like it's been ripped from his chassis and stomped on.
“You’ll be okay,” he whispers to you. “I promise.”
You close your eyes and let your helm loll to the side. Ratchet watches the soft rise and fall of your chassis for a few moments longer, then dims the medibay lights and returns to his previous work on the other side of the room.
Never do you stray far from his mind.

You know what, y'all are getting this essay now.
Metroid Fusion is a game about being transgender and being haunted by the idea of who you could have been/who you were, and Metroid Dread is about abusive and neglectful family and being prosecuted for factors outside of one's control.
This will have spoilers for Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread.
In the intro to Fusion, Samus Aran is working with a part of the galactic government, as a sort of freelancer. While on a mission, she is attacked by an amorphous alien lifeform which suddenly disappears after invading her suit. Later, while in transit, she suddenly loses motor functions and crashes her ship into an asteroid.
The lifeform, known as an X, had fused to her body, slowly killing her and destroying her from within. It was so deeply connected to her at that point that the doctors and scientists trying to save Samus were at a loss. They had removed parts of her suit hoping to quarantine the X and reverse the process, but it was deep in her central nervous system at this point.
As Samus' narration puts it:
By taking a sample of Metroid DNA and splicing it with Samus', her body was able to adapt and absorb the X. This was only possible because the X are describes as being of "nearly pure energy", and Metroid being creatures that absorb energy, are one of their only predators.
Now, what does that have to do with an allegory for being trans? Well.
Being Part Metroid is not a reversible process. And it's not without its problems. Metroids are naturally vulnerable to cold, and while Samus used to be able to handle at least close to arctic temperatures without her Varia Suit, she is now barely able to even handle research facilities in said areas. On top of that, her suit is now more deeply connected to her than it ever has been before. It saved her, kept her alive while the X tried to ravage her body, but now it is an inescapable part of her.
But, she had been given the ability to consume X parasites. Her body was now, in part, Metroid in nature. She had won against the X that sought to kill her.
This is the image that really cements it in my brain. Samus has become a different person. She was reborn as a hybrid of Human, Chozo, and Metroid. Samus, for her part, accepts this pretty quickly, even reflecting that her life up to this point was leading up to this. The Metroid DNA that saved her came from the infant Metroid that saved her way back in Super Metroid, after all.
(I could go into how the change has caused her suit to become softer, and slightly weaker, and how much of the outer plating of her suit has been lost, and how that plays into the theme of transition, but that feels a bit more tenuous of a connection.)
Now, let's move to the antagonist of Fusion.
Samus' old suit, the parts removed by the scientists to get to her, was quarantined on a space station. However, the X inside began to replicate Samus herself, until they had become a copy of her at the peak of her power, but devoid of any humanity. A killing machine.
This is referred to as SA-X.
(that reveal scene gave me nightmares as a kid)
Throughout Fusion, you're attempting to basically get Samus back to the level of power that she had, in order to contend with and defeat the SA-X. A lot of other things happen in this game, including the personhood of Adam(who needs his own essay tbh). But, the crux of the conflict is between the SA-X, who is imitating a previous version of Samus, and Samus herself, who is desperately trying to become the person she once was, again.
The final boss of Fusion is a Metroid, not any X imitation. Despite the conflict between them, the SA-X attempts to fight this Metroid, it's natural predator, but fails. With the SA-X's death, Samus reclaims some of power that she lost, by consuming what was left of it. But, she doesn't just become the person that she was. She is permanently changed, permanently A Metroid by any standards. There is no going back.
She has taken the remnants of who she was, accepted them, and become something new, something greater.
Then, we come to Metroid Dread. In it, Samus is tasked with figuring out if the reports of X existing on a planet. A series of robots were sent to take samples and figure out if this information was true, the Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier, or E.M.M.I. units. Of course, all of them disappeared shortly after reaching the planet, and couldn't be reached. So, they sent Samus, whose unique biology made her the only living thing in the galaxy capable of surviving an attack from the X.
Samus is, in this game, the last Metroid in existence.
In the end, it is revealed that the EMMI units were taken over and controlled by a Chozo called Raven Beak. This Chozo was one of the several who gave their DNA to Samus, and he calls her Daughter throughout the ending sequence of the game.
Raven Beak's goal is to take the Metroid DNA from Samus to create a new form of bioweapon using it. Which is, for those familiar to the series, the same thing that the government has done, like, three times. Hell, it happens in Fusion, too. (The Metroids in that portion aren't even hostile to Samus, as they recognize her as one of their own.) Raven Beak was also the cause of a major schism within the Chozo, between those who wanted to exist in harmony with the universe, and those who saw it as theirs by right of their power.
Despite calling her "daughter", Raven Beak sees Samus as a tool. A source of power that he has every right to harvest. He manipulates her and pushes her to near-death to bring out her Metroid instincts, which are to Consume and Kill. He helps her become stronger, but only to make her a more complete Metroid. In his mind, her destiny is to pave the path for his dominion and control over the galaxy.
Despite never being there for her, Raven expects Samus to give her life so that he can become all-powerful. He calls it "her destiny". The process that saved her from the X in Fusion ultimately endangered her, and it is only through accepting her nature as a Metroid that she is able to survive and triumph.
Because she was a Metroid, a change that she did not choose to make but that was needed for her to survive, she became a target for Raven Beak. She was hunted by the EMMIs for her DNA, and became a monster to survive.

(it did give us the Coolest suit Samus has ever had, but still. Traumatizing for her)
In the end, Samus is of course not sacrificed upon the altar of Raven Beak's power. She escapes, and narrowly so, thanks to another Chozo who had been taken over by the X but retained his lucidity, named Quiet Robe. By willingly giving himself to Samus, she is able to regain a more normal form, but it is clear that the events of Dread have changed Samus irrevocably.
If you're still reading, I'd like to thank you for sticking with this rambling mess. And for coming to my ted talk. Lol.

NEW AVENGERS: ILLUMINATI #1-5 FEBRUARY 2007 - JANUARY 2008 BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS, BRIAN REED, JIM CHEUNG, MARK MORALES, JUSTIN PONSOR, JOHN DELL AND DAVE MEIKIS
SYNOPSIS (FROM COMIC VINE)
Years ago...
[On a Capital Skrull Ship over Throneworld]
Skrull Emperor Dorrek VII is hearing from one of his advisors that the Kree-Skrull War is over on account of Rick Jones, a "single human". Outraged, Dorrek demands an explanation as to how their superior fleet had been defeated. The advisor cautiously lays down the factors: explaining that the Earth's population of "genetic atrocities" (mutants) and so-called superheroes posed the biggest threat, and in conjunction with the competition from the Kree, the Skrulls' attempt to conquer Earth with a frontal attack was impossible.
The two are interrupted by the teleportation of the Illuminati, who introduce themselves as Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, Iron Man of the Avengers, Prince Namor of Atlantis, Doctor Stephen Strange of the mystic arts, Professor Charles Xavier of the "genetic atrocities", and Black Bolt of the Inhumans. Mr. Fantastic quickly declares that they traveled there to inform the Emperor that they will not tolerate another invasion of Earth and warns him against even approaching Earth space. Iron Man and Namor promise the Emperor retribution should he disregard their warnings. Dorrek is offended by their presence and swears that the Earth planet belongs to the Skrulls while promising to wipe out the human race, starting with their families. In acknowledgement, Iron Man asks Black Bolt what he has to say...

The Capital Skrull Ship explodes from the inside out, and the Illuminati are safely teleported aboard the nearby Quinjet by Doctor Strange. Namor rejoices at the ship's destruction, watching with pride from a window as it crashes down into the water below. When the rest of the Illuminati do not share his satisfaction, Namor comments that he'll just enjoy it enough for everyone then. Just then, the Quinjet is fired upon by multiple Skrull ships, despite being cloaked. The assault comes too fast for Doctor Strange or Professor X to aid in their escape, and the Quinjet is blown to pieces. The Illuminati drift in space, helpless.
Skrull scientists look upon their captured subjects. Mr. Fantastic is stretched in captivity to an enormous length and width, and the scientists are curious as to what the upper limits of his extension are. Namor is laid within a heated cell, deprived of nearly all moisture in the air as the scientists mock his existence as a "homo superior". Black Bolt is held in restraints with a beam immobilizing his vocal chords as the scientists comment on the perverse nature of the "Kree-spawn" and the Terrigen Mists. Professor X is held suspended in a containment field while the scientists explore his mutant DNA. Doctor Strange is held upside-down inside a spinning containment field while the scientists are confounded by his mystical powers and have called in priests from the Vovco Islands to look into them. The scientists then move onto study Iron Man's armor, which lies in pieces on a lab table. They comment on its primitive design in comparison to Skrull technology and state that it will go into the Royal Trophy Room, now that it has been dismantled. After discovering the armor kept Tony Stark's heart valves working, they are anxious to see how long he will survive without it.
Tony Stark sits naked alone in the brig. He is greeted by the Avengers, who crash through to rescue him. Stark knows better however, and tells the Skrull imposters that they always underestimate their opponents, asking them how dumb they think he is. The Skrull Quicksilver and Skrull Scarlet Witch insist that the exercise was a waste of time, but the Skrull Captain America and Skrull Thor think otherwise. The Skrull Thor theorizes that Stark doesn't expect his teammates to come and rescue him because no one knows they came there. He assaults Stark, who quickly incapacitates the Skrulls in unarmed combat, noting the training the real Captain America had given him beforehand. He puts on some pants taken from a Skrull and moves on with a Skrull rifle, freeing Charles Xavier from his confinement. Once free, Xavier assaults the Skrull scientists around him psychically until they are begging him to stop. Tony asks him if he's happened to have seen his armor, and Xavier replies that he hasn't while expressing concern for Tony's heart. Stark helps him move down the corridor to rescue the others. Namor exclaims that he would very much like to hit something, and Xavier alerts the two that the entire Skrull armada has been called. They quickly free Doctor Strange, who casts a spell to keep Stark's heart pumping for a little while longer. After recovering Black Bolt, the Illuminati arrive where Reed Richards is being painfully stretched. Namor recovers Richards and they make it into a large Skrull ship for their escape. Tony Stark pilots the Skrull ship out of the hangar, shooting into the atmosphere. As a countless number of Skrull attack ships open fire on their vessel, Black Bolt motions for them to open the back pod-bay. Doctor Strange refuses, stating that they are almost out of the atmosphere. Reed asks Strange if he can cast an illusion spell to aid in their escape, and Xavier helps "sell" it psychically.
As the Skrull armada bears down on the Illuminati's ship, a gigantic psychic illusion of Galactus appears before them. Many Skrulls, in their panic, collide into each other as the Illuminati flies off to safety. As they pass quietly by Saturn, Namor exclaims that they will come for them. Xavier tells him that the Skrulls were coming for them already. Stark replies that Namor is right, but at the very least, they made it clear that if they DO come at Earth, then the fight will be a real fight. Maybe now they'll look for someone else to pick on. The Illuminati pause, and as their ship nears Earth, Tony says "well, at least now they know it'll be a GOOD fight."
Back on Throneworld, Emperor Dorrek sits in his broken throne among the ruins of his chambers. He asks his advisor if they got what they needed from the [Illuminati], and the advisor answers "yes." The Emperor sullenly declares that it was worth it. He orders that the priests of the sciences get to work, exclaiming that no matter how long it takes, he will wait.
After Thanos' mad schemes with the Infinity Gems, Reed Richards comes across one of the gems. He has taken it upon himself to assemble the six gems so that no one else will yield the power. At a secret meeting with the Illuminati, he reveals that he now possesses three of the gems. With each gem, the risks of finding the next one become greater. He convinces the Illuminati that they must track down the rest of the gems to prevent them falling into another's hands.

Professor X, Doctor Strange, and Namor go after the Mind Gem, while Reed, Iron Man, and Black Bolt go after the Reality Gem. After some near casulties, both teams are successful.
With the five gems in the Gauntlet, the Time Gem appears. It has been summoned by the other gems. The others tell Reed to remove the Gauntlet but he hesitates. Then Uatu, the Watcher appears stating his disappointment in Richards. No man is meant to possess that amount of power. Reed then says he tried to will the Gauntlet to cease to exist.

Reed begs Uatu to take the Gauntlet. He says he cannot. Reed then decides that each of them shall take and hide one of the Gems. Uatu does not believe this is the best decision but it has been made.

Professor Xavier recalls the events of the first Secret War and appearance of The Beyonder. He remembers that he had thought about using his psychic powers to put all the heroes and villains to sleep, but had reconsidered out of fear that Beyonder would retaliate if he interfered. He had felt something in the Beyonder’s mind though, something “almost mutant in nature.” He mentally reached out and found himself pulled inside of the Beyonder’s consciousness. Inside, he discovered that the alien was not the cosmic being it pretended to be, but really an Inhuman. Not only that though, he was also a mutant. On the moon outside Attilan, Professor Xavier explained to the other members of The Illuminati (save Iron Man who was away) that the Beyonder was a mutant who had Inhuman that had been exposed to the Terrigen crystals.

Namor asks why Xavier is bringing this up now and Professor says that he’s recently been feeling that The Beyonder is close again so they should “handle” him before he gets to them. Strange asks Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans if he knows who The Beyonder is, but Black Bolt has no idea. Xavier says he knows where Beyonder is but the others don’t know what they’ll do once they get to him. Namor says that they won’t have to do anything, that Beyonder will bow before Black Bolt and beg forgiveness.
The group takes a stolen Skrull ship that Namor says they should have destroyed, and flies to the asteroid belt where Xavier detects The Beyonder. As they get closer, Dr. Strange grows weak, saying that something unnatural is going on. The ship moves up and they see what he’s talking about. The entire island of Manhattan has been duplicated and is floating in the asteroid belt. Reed parks the ship on the Baxter Building and the team gets out to look around. They see people on the streets below but Strange tells them that they’re not real. Reed spots Beyonder and amongst a group of heroes and realizes that Beyonder has created all of this to be his own personal playground. After Reed sees Beyonder, Beyonder turns and sees the Illuminati. He teleports to where they’re standing and is genuinely surprised to see anyone new. He wonders if he created them and made himself forget so it would be a special treat for himself, but once he sees Black Bolt he knows they are real. Beyonder bows before his king but before he can say much, he is attacked by a fake Hulk. The Illuminate remain calm and Beyonder tells them that he forgot he had scheduled that attack. He resumes speaking with Black Bolt and tells his king that he can talk hear because Beyonder can control everything so he’ll do no damage. Everyone else tells him not to and Strange says that Beyonder is messing with the natural order of things. Reed goes on to say that Beyonder’s very existence threatens the universe and that, basically, he is unnatural and doesn’t belong. Beyonder ignores all of this and asks Black Bolt how he’s still alive after so long. Xavier asks him how long he thinks it has been but Beyonder doesn’t reply. Namor tells him to leave the universe and Xavier says that he shouldn’t be interfering with the development of the species. Beyonder replies by saying that they interfere, but Strange says that that’s because it’s their species, not his. Beyonder says he just wants to do good, and that he can make the world however they want.

Suddenly the world changes and Dr. Strange wakes up in a bed with two naked women. Above him, Iron Men, mutants and cars fly through the sky. Beyonder makes it so the Atlanteans are invading the surface world and tells Namor that he can give them everything they want. Strange does a spell and Namor begins to speak the words Black Bolt wants to say. He tells Beyonder that he is not a god, he is not immortal he demands that Beyonder stop what he’s doing and leave the universe immediately. Beyonder seems to comply and everything turns to dust. The Illuminati decide it’s time to go.

As they pile into the ship, they talk about Beyonder. Xavier and Strange no longer detect his presence and say that what happened should not have worked. Beyonder could have destroyed them if he wanted to. Reed questions if Namor still wants to conquer the surface world and he says, “Only sometimes.” Black Bolt is embarrassed that he doesn’t remember The Beyonder from when he lived with other Inhumans and Xavier tells him it’s not his fault. The ship disappears into dark space that becomes the black pupils of Beyonder’s eyes. The Beyonder resumes his activities in his Manhattan playground.
In this issue Dr. Strange starts out in a bit of a daze when Reed interrupts him and asks if everything is okay, he responds saying that Clea left him, but Reed doesn't seem to know who she is even though Strange says they met 32 times. Strange says that she left to go fight demons in the dark dimension she thought that that was better than being married and a protege to Dr Strange.
Then Iron man comes in and is told about Clea, he answers with saying that he's sorry and she was very attractive which ticks off Strange. Then Black Bolt and Charles enter and they start talking about how Charles dated outside the species.
Iron man says that they don't know how lucky you married guys are, he's putting to much energy into finding someone to be with. Charles says that Black Bolt is laughing in his mind saying that Medusa never lets him get a word in. Reed then cuts in saying that Sue is great but when he's not there at the right time she just leaves the mansion. Iron man asks where she goes and Reed says that he knows where she goes with Namor standing behind them. He says that Reed keeps his wife in a cage. He says that they met dated a little and then he gave her powers and she was forced to live in Reeds tower, he then says that she loves and she's not going to leave him, he says that he's tried. He tells Reed that he needs to devout part of everyday to his wife and children.
They start to get annoyed of this conversation when Iron man says that he slept with Madame Masque, the rest don't know who she is and Iron man says that they should move on.

A kree named Noh-Varr (Marvel Boy) has declared war on earth and right now he's imprisoned and there is a major fear of escape and also they think that the imprisonment of Noh-Varr would anger the Kree empire. Iron man says that they should use Charles to change Noh-Varr's mind. Charles says no because eventually he would figure out that something is wrong about his decision and also there is a major molar line that they could never come back from. Namor comes up with a suggestion that they should talk in his language, violence.
Namor appears out of nowhere in Noh's cell and says to stand. Noh says for Namor to put some pants on, Namor then beats Noh's head into the ground. Namor says that when he declared war on Earth he declared war on the atlanteans. Namor then continues to beat him up until Noh gets up in Attilan which he seemed to figure out that it's one of Charles's illusions. Charles admits to this but tells Noh that the Kree had a vision for earth and they wanted earth to be protected so they could reach those visions. Then Black Bolt talks and says that when the Inhumans are of Kree descent and when you declare war on earth you declare war on himself. Then it's back to his cell where Namor tells him that he's an immature brat. Namor continues to beat up Noh which ends in another illusion but this time it's with Reed who explains to Noh-Varr about Captain Marvel who wanted to protect earth trying to tell him that this is who he could be, a hero to the earthlings.

Then it's Iron man's turn who says that earth will evolve into something great you just need to give it a chance to evolve. They tell him that he can either be the next captain Marvel or he could live the rest of his life in jail. They tell him to earn his way out to freedom and that's when they leave him. It skips to Reed at home sitting next to his sleeping son Franklin Richards when Sue enters and Reed asks if tomorrow she would like to go on a date and a family picnic. Then it cuts to Iron man and Strange at their homes looking very depressed out of something said today.
The issue ends with Noh-Varr in his cell saying Captain Marvel.
While discussing what the death of the Skrull-Elektra means for the Marvel Universe Black Bolt revealed himself to the Illuminati as a Skrull.

During his battle with the rest of the Illuminati a Skrull dressed as Thor and a Skrull dressed as Colossus (or is it Nightcrawler?) come to aid Skrull-Black Bolt. Iron Man set off an explosion to destroy the Skrulls. After the battle the Illuminati continue their discussion about the Skrulls only to realize that they cannot even trust each other.

REVIEW
It is clear, when you read this story knowing what happened after, that all the clues where there all along. At least in these issues. But I can imagine waiting a full year for the big reveal could feel a bit of a cheat. But it is there, the story around the Skrulls has been there all along, with some detours in the middle I assume will pay up during Secret Invasion (like Marvel Boy and the infinity gems). I know most of this stuff actually plays an important part in the next Secret Wars.
The quality of the chapters suffers a bit as the story progresses. The first two episodes are awesome. The Beyonder and Marvel Boy stories are a just there to plant seeds, but they do not really represent episodes (especially the Marvel Boy one). The last episode feels very short and reads more connected to the ongoing plots of the Marvel Universe. But as I said, it was always connected to that.
Jim Cheung does an amazing job with super-heroes and expressions (sometimes the faces look a bit too similar, but he compensates with characterization).
Overall it was a very exciting read, it really feels like the movie (at least the first two episodes, plus the big surprise in episode five, even though I saw it coming).
I give this story a score of 8.

Experimental Martian dirt: $20 a kilogram, plus shipping
The University of Central Florida is selling Martian dirt, $20 a kilogram plus shipping.

This is not fake news. A team of UCF astrophysicists has developed a scientifically based, standardized method for creating Martian and asteroid soil known as simulants.
The team published its findings this month in the journal Icarus.
"The simulant is useful for research as we look to go to Mars," said Physics Professor Dan Britt, a member of UCF's Planetary Sciences Group. "If we are going to go, we'll need food, water and other essentials. As we are developing solutions, we need a way to test how these ideas will fare."
For example, scientists looking for ways to grow food on Mars -- cue the Martian movie -- need to test their techniques on soil that most closely resembles the stuff on Mars.
"You wouldn't want to discover that your method didn't work when we are actually there," Britt said. "What would you do then? It takes years to get there."
UCF's formula is based on the chemical signature of the soils on Mars collected by the Curiosity rover. Britt built two calibration targets that were part of Curiosity rover. Researchers currently use simulants that aren't standardized, so any experiment can't be compared to another in an apples-to-apples kind of way, Britt said.
As a geologist and a physicist, he knows his dirt. Like a recipe, the ingredients can be mixed in different ways to mimic soil from various objects, including asteroids and planets. And because the formula is based on scientific methods and is published for all to use, even those not ordering through UCF can create dirt that can be used for experiments, which reduces the uncertainty level.
Kevin Cannon, the paper's lead author and a post-doctoral researcher who works with Britt at UCF, says there are different types of soil on Mars and on asteroids. On Earth, for example, we have black sand, white sand, clay and topsoil to name a few. On other worlds, you might find carbon-rich soils, clay-rich soils and salt-rich soils, he added.
"With this technique, we can produce many variations," Cannon said. "Most of the minerals we need are found on Earth although some are very difficult to obtain."
Cannon is in Montana to collect ingredients for a moon simulant this week. Moon and asteroid materials are rare and expensive on Earth since they arrived via meteorites in small amounts. That's why asteroid and moon simulants are also on the list of items that can be ordered. The UCF team can mimic most ingredients and will substitute for any potentially harmful materials. All simulants produced in the lab, meet NASA's safety standards.
Britt and Cannon believe there is a market for the simulant. At $20 a kilogram, plus shipping, it may be easier to send UCF an order, than to try and make it in labs across the nation.
The team already has about 30 pending orders, including one from Kennedy Space Center for half a ton.
"I expect we will see significant learning happening from access to this material," Britt said.
Cannon believes it will help accelerate the drive to explore our solar system as demonstrated by investments already being made by Space X, Blue Origin and other private companies.
For Cody Schultz, a mechanical engineering senior, getting to work on the experimental soil has been "very cool."
"For someone who has always loved space science, this is the ultimate cool," he said. "And the experience is fantastic in terms of the real world ... out-of-this-world experience."

To the People of Earth:
Octopoids: Squid people, the first mutating life on Earth, replacing insects; a genetic disease, on the testicles, of alien “gods” (giants).
Luckgrifters: Cat peoples, that landed in Scythia, creating the Caspian Witches, all of civilization.
Sharkticons: Authors, creators of patents, that eat dogs, and offer immortality to a prophet, per generation of “cycles” (Jesus, Aisha, Racer X – The Bible, the Qu’ran, American History X).
Screamers: Genocidal maniacs, special scientist insects, inhabiting small bodied Germans; summoners of “asteroids” (astronomy experts, to run “The Jews”).
Dinosoids: Pimp ladies, with men that apply pedophiliac books (CS Lewis, only, offensive), and exchange technology to you, in exchange for fucking big booty, big breasted, big brained, reptile women, if you’re a fantastic writer (then abducting a doctor, to give you Suboxone, Respiradone, to see if you can escape by snitching).
Giants: The Old Gods, returned, to see why the country is inhabited by “herpes” (octopoids, humans).

For the week of 18 December 2017
Quick Bits:
Accell #6 concludes Danny’s first confrontation with new villain Midnight Blue and it’s interesting to see him still navigating how to be a hero, in this case ultimately failing. Damion Scott’s art is easily worth the price of admission alone.
| Published by Lion Forge / Catalyst Prime

Angelic #4 really starts getting into the happenings behind the scenes and the truth of what humans did before disappearing from the face of the Earth. It also shows that both the monks and the mans have been perpetuating their own ideologies and systems of belief to retain their own power structures. Not surprising, but like Orwell’s Animal Farm it’s a good way to show us some of our own failings through analogy.
| Published by Image

Assassinistas #1 isn’t exactly what I was expecting, but this is better. For whatever reason, I was expecting madcap female assassin action a la Kill Bill. That element is present, but this is really an interesting, humorous, and heartfelt look at three women who were assassins, who have moved on with their lives to create families and different situations. It’s about what happens after the usual exploitation movie, and it’s wonderful. Tini Howard has created some believable and interesting characters that are perfectly suited to Gilbert Hernandez bringing them to life.
| Published by IDW / Black Crown

Backways #1 is off to a good start. Anna’s girlfriend Sylvia goes missing amidst dabbling with magic and the occult, leading to Anna’s quest to find out what happened to her. Justin Jordan and Eleonora Carlini create some interesting characters and setting here, with some great art by Carlini.
| Published by AfterShock

Betty & Veronica: Vixens #2 gets us into the recruitment phase of the gang. I like the two narratives that Jamie Lee Rotante is providing, one of the current day gang and one of their formation. The art from Eva Cabrera fits this story perfectly.
| Published by Archie Comics

Dark Ark #4 gives us the battle between Nex’s vampires and the rest of the ark. It’s not pretty. The art by Juan Doe, though, is glorious.
| Published by AfterShock

Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #3 manages to make Wade and Logan feel like an old married couple. It’s hilarious.
| Published by Marvel

Evolution #2 makes me sad that this isn’t weekly or released in huge chunks. The story from James Asmus, Joe Keatinge, Christopher Sebela, and Joshua Williamson is great, with each group of characters having their own unique point of view to give a broader picture of the coming epidemic. But the real star remains Joe Infurnari, whose art just pulls the whole thing together and elevates it to what’s looking like a horror masterpiece.
| Published by Image / Skybound

The Family Trade #3 sends Jessa on the run as the intrigue amongst the Family and the Clans begin to reach a boiling point. Morgan Beem’s art again makes this one of the most unique looking books on the shelves, very well done.
| Published by Image

Hellboy: Krampusnacht is a beautiful one-shot illustrated by Adam Hughes showcasing Hellboy vs. Krampus. It’s a fun take on the folklore, changing it up to more suit Hellboy’s world.
| Published by Dark Horse

Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Fairies #1 kicks off a new anthology mini series with Matt Smith’s interpretation of the Icelandic fairy tale, “The Elf Queen and the Shepherd”. It’s a good story, with a bit of humour about talkative birds, and Smith’s art is beautiful.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / Archaia

Joe Golem: Occult Detective #4: Flesh & Blood #1 starts off a new two-parter with an interesting mystery of either a haunted house or a possessed woman or possibly both. Although the stories by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden are good, the main draw for this series for me has been Patric Reynolds’ depictions of the Drowning City. New York City recast as a derelict Venice just has something inherently right about it and Reynolds continuously nails the visuals.
| Published by Dark Horse

Kong on the Planet of the Apes #2 continues to feel like a seamless fusion between the two properties. The artwork from Carlos Magno is wonderful as expected, and I really like how Ryan Ferrier has incorporated some of the tropes of Kong stories, even briefly in the explorer’s notes as narration at the beginning of this issue.
| Published by BOOM! Studios

Made Men #4 makes a bit of a mess of their operation regarding the captain who ordered the hit on Jutte and her squad. There are some great comedy moments again this issue with Hadry continuing to adjust to the changes in society. Month in, month out, Paul Tobin and Arjuna Susini continue to make this one of my favourite books on the shelves.
| Published by Oni Press

Marvel Two-in-One #1 finally gets around to dealing with the aftermath of Secret Wars and the disappearance of Reed and Sue. Chip Zdarsky and Jim Cheung manage to create something mournful and beautiful here.
| Published by Marvel

Optimus Prime #14 closes out the “Dead Come Home” arc with more gorgeous artwork from Livio Ramondelli. It’s also interesting as to how many threads John Barber is weaving from to craft this story. There’s bits from various Spotlight issues, the Dinobots trilogy, the recent Shining Armor mini, the First Strike crossover, and more, yet it never seems confusing or busy.
| Published by IDW

Redlands #5 is probably the darkest issue to date. While it focuses a bit on Bridget’s history, with Zuzu and with darker entities further back in time, it also dives deep into different narratives of abuse, “ownership”, and forced prostitution.
| Published by Image

ROM and the Micronauts #1 spins out of the First Strike crossover, but there’s not much continuity there that isn’t repeated in the first couple of pages. The rest of the book is heavier on the previous ROM series continuity, but it shouldn’t really serve as an impediment. Basically, ROM and the Micronauts team up to take on the combined forces of the Dire Wraiths and Baron Karza, then everything goes to hell. Christos Gage sets up an interesting predicament for the heroes and a compelling reason for them to continue together. Paolo Villanelli again proves adept at just about everything the Hasbroverse can throw at him artistically.
| Published by IDW

Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil #3 is a turning point in Lucy’s investigation, as she searches out the Metal Minotaur and uncovers some of the secrets of Sherlock Frankenstein’s villainous meeting. The twist is interesting and should lead to a good final confrontation. The art again from David Rubín is truly amazing.
| Published by Dark Horse

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #15 begins Aphra’s latest mission for the murder bots. The dialogue for this issue from Si Spurrier is just spot on as it punches up some of the more humorous aspects of the series. Emilio Laiso’s art also gets to shine again, with some of the best depictions of various species throughout the Star Wars universe.
| Published by Marvel

Summit #1, like Noble and KINO, focuses on one of the astronauts who were sent out to stop the asteroid from crashing into Earth. Ostensibly, Valentina Resnick-Baker was the only one to publicly survive, even though we as readers know at least the fates of David Powell and Alistair Meath, which makes Val’s supposed visions of her crew a little more interesting. Amy Chu and Jan Duursema seem to have one of the more central books here to the comics universe’s central plot, with explicit ties to Foresight and following up on the deliberate murders of scientists who knew the truth about the asteroid, so it’s nice to see the story focus on character more than plot. It’s also really nice to see Duursema’s art again.
| Published by Lion Forge / Catalyst Prime

Tales of Suspense #100 is a great first issue from Matthew Rosenberg and Travel Foreman. Rosenberg’s Hawkeye is very much in the Fraction vein and his interactions throughout the comic are hilarious.
| Published by Marvel

Transformers: Till All Are One Annual 2017 brings both the series and Mairghread Scott’s tenure to a close. This ties up a few loose ends from the series and from the First Strike crossover, while giving Cybertron a new status quo going forward. This change hasn’t been reflected yet in the other Transformers titles yet, but it should be interesting to see a potentially friendlier and more progressive Cybertron. I am hoping that some of the personal revelations about Starscream will be picked up by either Optimus Prime or Lost Light.
| Published by IDW

Unholy Grail #5 brings the series to a close. In order to do so, it jumps over a few things, and pushes forward the timeline, which to me makes it feel a little rushed compared to previous issues. Still, the entire series has been a bleak reinterpretation of the Arthurian myth and that time shift adds to the feeling of emptiness. Wonderful artwork from Mirko Colak.
| Published by AfterShock

Jim’s Problem - Star Trek
Jim x Reader where he gets jealous please
Jim Kirk x romantic Reader where he gets jealous over someone who flirts with the reader
Words: 1693
AN: This is longer than I meant it to be. Woops.
Jim had a problem. Ensign Gianni.
When he had first been approving new crew transfers, he had been excited about the Ensign. You had needed help in the geology lab for months after your former partner left to have a baby. Finding a qualified replacement proved difficult on the outer limits of Federation space, but Jim was pleased to see Gianni’s name pop up on his oncoming crew list when they docked back at Federation outpost for a quick refit.
The Ensign was top of their class, had experience with a terraforming unit, and had recommendation letters from three different Starfleet Academy instructors. Perfect. Jim had approved the transfer and the Enterprise went on its merry way.
He wouldn’t actually meet the new Ensign until a week or so later. He was lounging in his Captain’s chair when the comm buzzed.
“Jim.”
“Yes Bones?”
“Listen. Y/n is completely fine. But there was an…accident in the geology lab.”
Jim was out of his chair and in the turbo lift in the blink of an eye. He tapped his foot for a few nervous seconds before the lift arrived on the medical level. He rushed to the medbay door and stopped in his tracks. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw you sitting on a bed, seemingly fine. And then his gaze fell on the figure next to you, dressed in science blue. A prickle of jealousy ran up his spine as he watched the figure place a hand on your arm, saying something that made you smile. He shook his head and walked over to you.
“Are you ok?” He asked.
“Fine thanks to Ensign Gianni here.” You motioned to the Ensign next to you. “They saved me.”
Jim paused before turning to the Ensign.
“Thank you Ensign.” He said. The ensign stood there, expecting more. But when Jim failed to say anything, they simply nodded and turned to leave. When Gianni was out of earshot Jim let his shoulders droop as he moved in front of you, placing HIS hands on your arms.
“What happened?” He asked.
“Turns out that chemical in the asteroid rock was a bit more unstable than I thought. I had my back turned. I didn’t even notice the heat signature rising until Gianni yanked me away. Bones had to pick a couple little rock splinters out of my hand but Im fine.” You explained, hopping off the table.
“You sure?” Jim asked, reaching for your hand. He turned it over as if to inspect it for himself. You pulled it away and used it to pat his cheek.
“Im sure Jim. Now get back to work. I’ll see you tonight.” You pushed a quick kiss against his lips before turning to leave.
“Hey Im supposed to tell YOU to get back to work.” He called out. You responded with a wink just before you disappeared out the door.
------------------------
Jim had all but forgotten about the prickle of jealousy until two days later. The Enterprise was tasked with doing some tedious scans of some planets in a nearby solar system that didn’t actually require him to be present on deck. So he took a rare day off and decided to surprise you during your lunch hour. He headed to the mess, grabbed a tray, and looked around for you. After a few seconds he spotted you at a table in the corner. He started to job over but slowed when he realized you were not alone.
Ensign Gianni was there. And they were making you laugh. Again. The prickle of jealousy returned to his spine as he walked over.
“Mind if I join?” He asked. You looked up from your food.
“Jim! Sit down. Gianni was just telling me the funniest story about the minerology instructor at the academy.” You chuckled as you spoke.
So Jim sat silently and picked at his food. The crew transfer hadn’t mentioned that Gianni could have been a damn model. And their slight French accent made every word that came out of their mouth sound like some sort of seductive message. The prickle of jealousy moved down his spine and made his toes curl in his boots when he looked at you though. You were hanging off Gianni’s every word. And when Gianni made you laugh Kirk stood up abruptly.
“Im needed on the bridge.” He announced with a hint of ice that Gianni didn’t notice, but you sure did. You raised an eyebrow.
“Ok…I’ll see you later tonight?” you asked. Jim shrugged and rushed out of the hall.
The jealousy only got worse. The scans of the planets turned up some unusual geologic features. And reluctantly Jim had to send you and Gianni on an away team to collect samples. Two days on a planet with a supermodel scientist. Great.
And then once you were back on board, you spent late nights studying the samples. Jim laid on your bed, writhing in jealousy. Desperately trying to push images of Gianni’s hands all over you in the lab out of his mind. On the third night of this he gave up and headed to the medbay with a bottle of some pale red alcohol he had been given by an ambassador. He walked into the medbay and into McCoy’s office.
“Glasses Bones.” He commanded as he walked in, raising the bottle to answer Leonards raised eyebrow. Understanding, Bones opened a drawer and pulled out two crystal shot glasses. Jim poured and slumped in the chair opposite Leonard’s desk.
“You’re lucky I’m off duty. So what problems are we drowning tonight?” Bones asked.
“Y/N.” Jim mumbled, sipping the liquid.
“You two fighting?” The doctor asked.
“No. I mean I don’t think so.” Jim shrugged.
“Oh god. You didn’t propose did you?” Bones sipped as well.
“What? No. No, I’m worried about Ensign Gianni.” Jim knocked back the rest of his shot and poured another.
“Y/N’s lab partner?”
“Yea. I’ve been…I mean you should see the way Y/N laughs at everything they say. And Y/N has been spending every night down there with Gianni for almost a week. And Gianni is way more attractive than I thought a geologist would be.” Jim started to ramble, shaking his hands.
“Jim, Y/N is an attractive geologist so don’t ever say that in front of them. And you think Y/N is getting it on with this Ensign?” Bones asked.
“I don’t know. All I know is I want Gianni off my ship. But I cant transfer him because that would be allowing my personal feelings to affect my role as captain.” Jim sipped at this second shot. Just thinking about the Ensign was igniting a bubble of anger.
“I hate to break it to you but you do have a track record of letting your personal feelings affect your decision making. It’s kind of your thing Jim.” Bones chuckled. “You need to talk to Y/N. No bullshitting.”
“What if Y/N tells me something I don’t want to hear.”
“You’ve been happily dating for what? Over two years? I think you’re overreacting. I’ve never seen anyone love someone as much as Y/N loves you. They have to love you to put up with your shit.” Bones shrugged. He snatched away Jims glass just as he was about to pour a third shot. “Get out of here Jim. Go talk to Y/N. And for the love of god do it sober.”
Jim furrowed his eyebrows at the doctor but left the office and the bottle nonetheless. He wandered back to your shared room and stepped inside. You still were not back. He sank into a chair and dropped his head into his hands.
Get a hold of yourself Kirk. He tried to doze off but the bubble of anger and jealousy grew with every minute until you finally walked through the door. As he looked up at you, the bubble popped and he was left with only a sudden and deep fear of losing you.
“Jim?” You asked, walking over and dropping to kneel in front of him. “Are you ok?”
“Are we…are we ok?” He asked, reaching for one of your hands.
“Are we ok? Of course we’re ok. Unless you know something I don’t know?” Confusion flashed across your face as you let him take your hands. Jim paused, obviously fighting in his head about what to say when he blurted.
“Are you and Ensign Gianni hooking up? You know…behind my back?”
“What?” You asked standing up suddenly. “Are you joking?”
“Its just. Gianni is so…attractive and…and you laugh at their jokes and they did save your life. And the late nights. And the..”
“Jim.” You said, cutting off his rambling. You reached out and pulled him to his feet. “James T Kirk you should know me better than that. No. I am not hooking up with Ensign Gianni. We are working late nights because those geologic formations are unlike anything we’ve ever seen and it takes time to study and document them. You know that. It’s the same process every time we do a geologic survey like this.”
You reached out to cup his face in between your hands.
“And I laugh at their jokes because they are about geology and rocks Jim. I haven’t been able to talk about my work with anyone that actually understands it since Avery left to have her baby. And also, Gianni is going out with an Ensign in engineering. AND ALSO, this whole ship knows Im sleeping with the Captain. Everyone is scared you’ll blow them out of an airlock if they even look at me. I don’t think I could cheat on you if I wanted to.”
A flush grew across Jims face as he looked at the ground. You sighed and pulled him against you, wrapping your arms around his neck.
“Why didn’t you just talk to me?” You asked.
“I was worried you’d leave me.” He mumbled.
“Well you’re an idiot Jim. Im in it for the long haul ok? I love you.” You mumbled back, pushing a kiss against the side of his neck as his arms snaked around your waist.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”

Women in Science: Mary Watson Whitney and Irène Joliot-Curie
From Clevermanka’s This Week in Feminist History:
On September 11 in 1847…
… Mary Watson Whitney, an American astronomer, was born in Waltham, Massachusetts. Due to her father’s business success, she was able to attend school in Waltham, then was privately tutored for one year until entering Vassar College in 1865. She earned her degree three years later, despite facing several family tragedies during that time, including her father’s death and the loss of her brother at sea. In 1872, she earned her master’s degree from Vassar as well, after attending several courses at Harvard. (At the time, Harvard didn’t admit women, though they could attend courses as guests. So very gracious of them.) Mary worked as a teacher for a few years, after which she took a job at Vassar as an assistant to astronomer Maria Mitchell. When Maria retired in 1888, Mary became a professor of astronomy and the director of the observatory. In her time supervising at Vassar Observatory, she and others under her published over 102 articles. Mary herself focused on researching comets, variable stars, double stars, and asteroids. She was a charter member of the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society, and also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mary lived until January of 1921 when she died of pneumonia at the age of 73.
On September 12th in 1897…
… French scientist and Nobel Prize winner Irène Joliot-Curie was born in Paris, France. Irène, the daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie, began her education where she was ten years old. After her mother became aware of her talent in math, she decided to ensure her daughter had a more challenging education. Marie joined with a number of other French scholars, including Paul Langevin (French physicist) to form a collective of academics who participated in educating each other’s children. The Cooperative taught their children science and mathematics and also subjects such a sculpture and the Chinese language. After two years, Irène attended the Collège Sévigné in Paris, before moving to Sorbonne Faculty of Science. World War I interrupted her education, at least in the university sense. She assisted her mother in running field hospitals instead, and assisted with the early X-ray technology her parents’ research helped develop. (The radiation they were both exposed to here and later on led not only to Marie’s eventual death but Irène’s as well.) After the war, Irène finished her education at her parents Radium Institute. By 1925, she had a Doctorate of Science. Around that same time, she met Frédéric Joliot, whom she later married. The pair decided to work together, much like Irène’s parents. Together they identified the positron and the neutron. Unfortunately, they didn’t properly understand the results, and the discoveries were later claimed by other scientists. Their most well-known discovery was in 1934 when Irène and her husband figured out how to transform elements. They turned boron into radioactive nitrogen, magnesium into silicon, and aluminum into phosphorus. Their discovery led to the quick creation of radioactive materials, and they received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. Unfortunately, Irène developed leukemia a short while later. Doctors relieved her condition for some time, during which she continued to work. She survived until 1956 when she died of leukemia at the age of 58. Her daughter Hélène Langevin-Joliot is a nuclear physicist, and her son Pierre Joliot is a biochemist.

Ten x Rose Rated T Telepathy (telepathic marriage bond) Angst Fluffy laughter Not exactly a rewrite Dimension Hopping Rose JE fixit Happy ending! Beta’d by the ever fabulous MrsBertucci, without whom this chapter wouldn’t exist AO3 and TSP and on Tumblr Chapter 1 (the corrected!) 2, 3, 4, 5 Part of the The Adventures of Bad Wolf and the TARDIS…and their Doctor series
…find a way
“Mum and Pete are taking little Tony to Broadchurch this weekend,” Rose told him.
“You’re not going?” The Doctor asked, looking at her askance. “Where’s Broadchurch?”
“Little beach town in West Bay, Dorset.” Rose paused then rushed on. “I…I might go. There’s not much left to do at Torchwood with the canon, and Mickey—well, Micks convinced me that spending time with them while I can might be the best thing.”
The Doctor did his very best not to let his jealousy bleed through their link. He tried, really. He gave his success rate as maybe 68%. Rose didn’t hit him but she didn’t look at him, either. No, she kept her head on his chest, fingers running lightly through the hairs covering it.
“How’s his Gran?” He didn’t want to talk about Mickey Smith in their bedroom as they lay in bed, drowsy and content and naked, but they promised never to hold back, not to keep secrets while they were separated.
More than that, he knew something bothered Rose. The Doctor didn’t know if it was their separation, the lack of progress on the cannon, or loneliness.
The same loneliness that choked him and made him contemplate desperate things—like dismantling the dead Daleks in a 1930 New York sewer and using whatever he could from them to punch through the Void. They did it, they broke through and with a few tweaks he could as well. After all, he was far smarter than a Dalek.
He hadn’t. Well, all right, he had dismantled them. He’d taken them apart with cold precision and destroyed the cavern they’d used for their hideous experiments.
But he hadn’t punched through the Void.
The TARDIS somehow alerted Martha who lectured him on destroying the universe and demanded to speak to Rose. Not the first or last time that had happened. And Rose. His beloved, his hearts…
He held her tighter, his own grief and loneliness swelling through him.
Or maybe it was hers.
If asking after a beach trip or Mickey’s Gran helped Rose, then that’s what he’d do. He had to be there for her, even if it was to talk about vacation plans with the family and her best mate. Plans he couldn’t participate in.
“They moved into the mansion. Rita-Ann wasn’t too sure of that, she remembered this world’s Pete and Jackie and, of course, heard all the gossip. Everyone heard about Jackie’s death.” She paused and sighed, and the Doctor ran his fingers through her hair, hoping that small movement, the slight press of his fingers on her scalp, soothed her. “But Mickey convinced her. Best place for her. Best place for all of us. And it’s nice, having Mickey around.”
“So, Broadchurch, eh? Nice place?”
“So I hear. Sleepy little town, but it’ll be nice to get away.”
The Doctor kissed her and tugged her closer to him. He loved telepathic sex with Rose, but he missed touching her physical body as badly as he missed sharing their adventures.
“We’re heading to Cardiff,” the Doctor told her.
Rose rubbed her leg over his, head on his chest, and kissed the spot between his hearts. “Going to refill the TARDIS?”
“She deserves it. Doesn’t need it often, but after being powered down for the three months I hid from the Family and then being caught by the Angels when we were separated...” The Doctor shuddered and tightened his hold on her.
“Almost had to take out a mortgage,” Rose teased. But she kissed him gently and cupped his face. “Whatever would you have done?”
The Doctor caught her gaze and held her hand to his cheek. “Bad enough that flat had curtains.”
“Didn’t have carpets at least.” Rose lay her head back on his chest and held him tight. “And you had Martha. I’m glad she was with you—she’s good.”
“She’s a star, Martha Jones is.”
“Shame we can’t communicate through the watch anymore.” Rose sighed, though he didn’t feel her soft breath on his chest. The loss cut through him. “I miss being a part of your life.”
“You are my life.”
The Doctor swallowed and shuddered, pushing his loneliness and fear as far back into the screaming pit of darkness he carried with him. She didn’t need that. She needed him. His support, his love, his telling her of how he spent his day even if it was wandering through marketplaces with Martha looking for elusive TARDIS parts.
“I don’t need you two ganging up on me again!” He pulled her even closer. He’d give a regeneration for Rose to be in the same universe, galaxy, planet, TARDIS, room with him, she and Martha teasing him.
They were both right when they told him that his plan to evade the family wasn’t his best. Being with Rose in the watch greyed out a portion of their link; in a way it was fantastic, being with her all the time. As if they hadn’t been separated.
However it wasn’t the same, and him being John Smith had killed a lot of people and ruined an entire village. Not to mention how he’d hurt Joan Redfern. And Martha.
“It’s impossible now, without my mind in there. No way to connect the two of you.”
“No, I know. Still, it was nice having a friend…” Rose trailed off and the Doctor looked down at her.
She never talked about it, but then the Doctor knew everything that went on in Rose’s mind. She was lonely in the other universe. Achingly so. Not only because she missed him but because that world treated her like an interloper.
Half of Torchwood thought she was a vacuous daddy’s girl bleeding money from Pete—of course half of the UK thought she was a vacuous daddy’s girl who resurfaced as Pete Tyler’s daughter to bleed him of money.
It didn’t matter how smart she was or how uninterested in money she was. It didn’t matter she donated her Torchwood salary to President Harriet Jones’s charity, Feed the United Kingdom. It also didn’t matter that Jackie made a miraculous return from the dead and that she completely embraced Rose as their daughter. (A convoluted story the Vitex PR department had a hell of a time spinning.)
Other than the handful of dimension canon scientists and technicians assigned to work with her, ostensibly to study the feasibility of interdimensional travel and the impact on the environment, both Earth’s and the universe’s, Rose only spoke with Mickey and Jake. At least she had them, and for that the Doctor had never been more grateful to Mr. Mickey.
“How go the jumper calculations?” He asked, changing the subject.
Rose shrugged. “Still at a standstill. Not because it won’t work,” she amended and kissed where his right heart beat beneath her touch. “You and Mickey both agree on the calculations, which—” she raised her head and glared at him—“I never want to go through again. Had a migraine for a week, I did, having the pair of ya go back and forth on dimensional coordinates verses galactical verses Earth Prime.” She shuddered and scowled. “No, those pinpricks in the Void walls aren’t big enough.”
Neither said those pinpricks might never be big enough for her to jump through. Neither had to. They both knew the risks. For now, it didn’t matter. She’d been trapped a year there, already.
Not enough time for anyone to notice the changes in her. Not yet. But then he hadn’t even realized Bad Wolf changed her to begin with. It’d taken months and months; only after she and the TARDIS merged again to fly the ship to pre-Revolutionary France had either of them realized anything had changed in Rose.
“The TARDIS is still scanning,” he promised. And his amazing ship hummed insistently in his head, promising she was, in fact, looking hard for any way to reunite the three of them.
“I know.” Rose sniffed back tears and the Doctor moved just enough to cradle her face in his hands. To show her, as tenderly as possible, the depth of his love for her.
“Don’t cry, my hearts,” he begged. “Please don’t cry.”
“I miss you.” She looked up and grinned at the ceiling. “I miss you, too, darling.”
The TARDIS preened, but Rose’s voice broke and the Doctor couldn’t even roll his eyes at the pair of them. All he could do was blink back his own tears, his own grief, and hold his wife close.
Clung to her might’ve been a better descriptor.
“We won’t be in Cardiff long,” he told her, kissing her gently. “Any suggestions for our next trip?”
“Have you taken Martha to that asteroid bazar?” Rose wound her arms around his neck and slid her leg over his hip. The Doctor couldn’t feel her tears on his chest and hate that more than he loathed the fact she cried. Unable to say anything around the lump in his own throat, he held her closer. “The one with the eight-foot-tall troubadours in that anti-gravity well?”
“Herschel Asteroid.” He nodded in agreement.
“The one discovered by the first English female astronomer, yeah?”
“Yup!”
“Take her there. I think she’ll like it. Lots to see, good ice cream, too.”
They never made it to Herschel Asteroid. They didn’t even last long in Cardiff. The Doctor tried to joke about no one ever expecting Jack Harkness, but it fell flat.
“Hello again.” The Doctor frowned down at the body as Martha raced inside the TARDIS for the medical kit she insisted on keeping handy after a small (very slight) problem with Daivander Stinger Bugs which most definitely was not his fault! “Oh, I’m sorry.”
“Here we go.” Martha pushed him out of the way and knelt beside Jack. “Get out of the way. It’s a bit odd, though. Not very hundred trillion. That coat’s more like World War Two.”
“I think he came with us,” he said and wondered how he could keep this from Rose.
She slept now, he had carefully calculated his and Martha’s trips so he could spend the maximum amount of time with Rose in their telepathic world. Rose needed her sleep, she pushed herself to develop the dimension cannon, and he was loathed to deprive her because he was lonely.
“How do you mean, from Earth?” Martha squinted up at him.
“Friend of mine,” the Doctor was forced to admit. Martha frowned. “Used to travel with me, back in the old days.”
“With Rose?” Martha asked softly.
His gaze jerked from Jack’s body to her, though he really didn’t see Martha. He didn’t see this planet or Jack or even care. He saw the three of them, Team TARDIS Rose had called them. “Yeah. We—before. The other me—we traveled together.”
“Oh.” Martha nodded and the Doctor was suddenly relieved he’d told her about regeneration. Especially since Jack might or might not know about it, and either way this barren land wasn’t the place to describe what happened.
“But he’s—I’m sorry,” Martha whispered. “There’s no heartbeat. There’s nothing. He’s dead.”
Of course Jack wasn’t and when he woke up, he scared ten years off Martha. The Doctor, uncomfortable, sad, and desperately trying to figure out how to tell Rose, couldn’t even grin.
“Nice to meet you, Martha Jones.” Jack winked. The Doctor did roll his eyes then.
“Doctor.” Jack stood and helped Martha up as well.
“Captain.”
He tried not to watch Martha as he and Jack exchanged what could only be called forced polite hellos. Not even all that polite.
“Just got to ask. The Battle of Canary Wharf. I saw the list of the dead. It said Rose Tyler.”
His hearts squeezed and for a moment his world stopped. The Doctor frantically reached out for Rose, despite her slumber, and for a moment—a lifetime—held her close. “Oh, no! Sorry, she’s alive.”
Stunned, Jack’s façade fell and his smile bloomed. “You’re kidding!”
“Parallel world.” The words cut through him as surely as any sword. “Safe and sound. And Mickey, and her mother.”
“Oh, yes!” Jack hugged him and the Doctor let him. And for a moment, reveled in the lie. That he could find Rose any time he wanted to. That he could see her whenever the fancy took hold of him—
As simple as crossing a bridge.
“Wait a minute.” Jack pulled back and squinted at him.
“Yes,” Martha said and stood between them, allowing the Doctor distance and he seriously wanted to fall to her feet in gratitude. “Great reunion and all,” she interrupted. “But we’re a hundred trillion years in the future. Let’s explore, eh?”
It wasn’t until they were in the silo, with Jack in the radiation chamber that the Doctor admitted what he knew Jack wanted to know.
“You married her,” Jack said, stunned. “Even knowing—?”
“I—yeah.” He and Rose had only told Jackie about what Bad Wolf had done to her, how opening the Heart of the TARDIS and looking into the Vortex fundamentally altered her, increasing her longevity, her healing, her overall health.
Once it became clear to both of them he couldn’t pilot the TARDIS through the remaining gaps in the Void, Rose finally told Mickey who just nodded and shrugged. “Yeah, that don’t surprise me none,” he’d said and they returned to their cannon work.
“She’s not just in the other universe, Jack.” Each word chipped at what little composure he maintained outside his and Rose’s telepathic bedroom. He hadn’t been in their real, physical, bedroom since losing her. “I can’t reach her. The walls closed after the Time War and it was only because the Cybermen punched through that the gaps opened in the first place. She’s trapped there.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Yeah.” Yeah. He was, too.
“What happened?” Jack asked, and his tone caught the Doctor. Lived through the entirety of the 20th century—yeah, Jack knew all about loss and loneliness. Grief. Even waiting a hundred years to see Rose again, Jack mourned her as if they met for tea only yesterday.
So, the Doctor told him—Bad Wolf, merging with the TARDIS, flying back to save him. Them.
“If you’re married…” Jack let the sentence trail off. “Oh. I’m sorry,” he said again.
“Yeah.” He repeated. “How could I say no to her?” the Doctor whispered. “She was everything to me.” He sniffed, looked away from Jack. “Still is.”
And then all hell broke loose.
The Doctor grabbed Jack’s wrist and flicked through the sonic’s settings as quickly as possible. They needed to leave this place before either the riot reached them, the atmospheric shell dissolved, or the Master decided not to take any chances and return to kill him anyway. Freezing the TARDIS’s controls wouldn’t last long, not on another Time Lord, but the Doctor knew his beloved ship wouldn’t let someone like the Master break into her systems.
They landed hard, with Rose screaming in his head and that sickening feeling of transporting through the Vortex minus a TARDIS making him dizzy. Rose railed at him, fists beating against his chest for not only lying to her about Jack but about her part in his change.
“My hearts.” He grabbed her hands and held her close as she spat at him, tears streaking her beautiful face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t—I couldn’t—”
“There’s no excuse, Doctor,” she said, hard and flat and too silent for anything other than furious anger. “You lied to me after promising me never to do so. After telling me that sharing a bond opened up everything you were to another.”
“I—yes. I did. You’re right, there’s no excuse.” He took a breath, though that did nothing but allow him to taste the air. “I buried it deep, far too deep for you to find, and I did it on purpose.” Jaw clenched, he met her gaze. “And I did it because I’m a coward. I ran from Jack because he’s wrong, time-wise, yes, but you’re right. I could’ve returned.”
“Why didn’t you?” she demanded. “Any time you could’ve said, we traveled for months together before we found out about Bad Wolf—and then for a year or so after that! WHY?”
He ran his hand through is hair—now wasn’t the time for this conversation and he knew it, but he’d lied to his wife, his bond mate.
“I was afraid!” he shouted, more at himself than her. “I’d kept it from you for so long and then I didn’t know how to tell you. I was terrified you’d—” he cut himself off.
Rose crossed her arms over her chest. “That I’d what?”
“That you wouldn’t forgive me for being more concerned over you, over keeping you safe. I was regenerating, Rose, and you’d just looked into the Heart of the TARDIS. Forgive me for being more concerned for you than Jack.”
“And later?”
He swallowed and closed his eyes, the weight of his lies caving his chest inward. “I didn’t know how to tell you. Even when I promised never to keep anything from you, you believed me because it was the truth. By then—by then,” he said softer, “I’d buried Jack and what happened to him so far back I meant every word.”
“The TARDIS is chiming in my head.” She closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him tight. Pulling back, Rose kissed him fiercely, hungrily. “We are by no means finished with his, mister.” She pecked his lips and stepped out of his arms. “But do what you need to do to stop the Master.”
“I love you, my hearts.”
Rose nodded. “I know. I love you, too, Doctor, even when I’m furious with you.”
The Doctor opened his eyes and found himself on a street with Jack and Martha—no. Martha wasn’t there.
“Where is she?” he demanded.
“I don’t know,” Jack admitted, looking pale and worried. “The Vortex Manipulators work on multiple people when everyone is holding on, and I know she was.”
The Doctor felt sick—if Martha let go, she could be floating in the Vortex. He had no way of tracking her, no way of finding her if she was lost.
“She’s all right, Doctor.”
“Rose?”
“She’s in the TARDIS. We’ll look after her.”
“Rose says Martha is in the TARDIS.” He looked at Jack, who looked confusedly intrigued, and shrugged. “At least she’s safe.”

20 Facts You Learned in School That Are No Longer True
Women suspected of being witches were not burned at the stake
Vera Petruk/Shutterstock
First, no one was burned during the Massachusetts Bay Colony witch scare in 1692. In Europe, convicted witches were sometimes burned, but in England, they were hanged, and that’s the tradition the colonists followed after a group of young girls started having “fits” that the doctor blamed on supernatural afflictions. In all, almost 200 people were accused of being witches; 19 were convicted and hanged. One person was crushed to death under stones. Another myth about the Salem witch trials is that all the accused were women. Five of those executed (including the elderly farmer who was pressed to death) were men; plus, the accusations affected people from all circumstances and social positions.
There are actually four states of matter
Romaset/Shutterstock
You may have learned about three—liquid, solid, and gas. Those are the most common states of matter that we find here on Earth, but beyond our atmosphere, there’s a fourth state—plasma—and it might be the most common in the universe. When you add enough energy to an atom, its electrons can get away from its nucleus and react with a different nearby nucleus, creating plasma, which consists of highly charged particles with very high kinetic energy. Gases like neon are goaded into a plasma state by electricity to make glowing signs; stars are basically huge balls of plasma. But that’s not the only extra state of matter: In 1995, scientists created one called the Bose-Einstein condensate, where matter is super-cooled to almost absolute zero, causing molecular motion to practically stop. Nobody knows whether Bose-Einstein condensates exist in nature, but they can be made in a lab. Researchers are also investigating other states of matter, so the number could keep growing, according to Gizmodo.
We either have eight or 13 planets in our solar system

My sixth grade science teacher taught us “Mary’s violet eyes make John stay up nights plenty” (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)—but then, in the 1990s, scientists found a doughnut-shaped region of the solar system out beyond Neptune that’s filled with asteroids, comets, and icy objects. They called it the Kuiper Belt and redefined poor little Pluto as a Kuiper Belt Object instead of a planet. While many ex-schoolchildren felt betrayed at the time, Pluto wasn’t the first planet to get demoted—it had already happened to a body called Ceres that orbits between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres was called a planet too when it was first identified in 1801, but over time astronomers realized it was part of an asteroid belt and revoked its planethood. But the story doesn’t end there—both Ceres and Pluto got bumped back up into a new category in 2006 when the International Astronomical Union declared them dwarf planets.
We don’t really know all the planets in our solar system

According to NASA, there are three other officially recognized dwarf planets circling our sun (all in the Kuiper Belt, with Pluto) and possibly hundreds more that haven’t been identified yet. And then there’s the mystery of Planet X—so far, it’s only hypothetical, but researchers at Caltech think it could be the size of Neptune and follow an orbit that’s circling the sun way out beyond Pluto. The final tally as of now, according to phys.org, is eight planets and five dwarf planets. Don’t miss these 18 science facts you never learned in school.
