I had a great time today at my school talk. I gave two assemblies And two classrooms including a writers workshop that was a blast! We came up with an idea so fun I’m even attempted to use it… But I will leave it to the kids :) #Writing #SchoolTalk #Read #picturebook #MiddleGrade #Mystery #Cats #kidlit #scbwi #authorsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CoJLZisrIMs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today - School
I (15yo woman) am in a great high school in my small city in Poland. I have lvl a history, english and social studies. Today i have to go to school and talk to teenagers that want to come to this school after graduation. Im not the best student but im good at talking. Pepole say im charming. I can talk with every one. MEN ? What is your fav football team. Woman ? I love your skirt. Kids? What is your fav cartoon. Elders ? Tell me about your past. That way pepole say that im a great listener and just an great person. I cant agree with that but if you say so. So im here 5hours before the meeting , scared...... Ok i lied. I cant talk to teenagers. I'm scared to talk to pepole my Age. Call me weird but that's true. I don't really have friends. Never had. But talking is my big talent. Maybe it's my ADHD maybe it's the fact I was teaches to help anyone and be nice even to biggest bitches but I can't walk past a sad person (even stranger). I can't count times when I talked with a stranger about their problems (not teenagers tho)( maybe my old friends but I knew them ok?!?!). But now... I DONT KNOW what to do. What should I say... The school is amazing. It is but what if they laugh... Ughhhhh i hate it. I need to think about itlol

Wow! What an amazing time I had at @fourcornerscharterschool! We developed stories, escaped from sinking ships, and chatted about chasing after our dreams. A huge shoutout to Melody Harris for organizing this school-wide event and for the beautiful mug! I was so touched. These students and the staff are truly amazing people! * * * #charterschools #authorvisit #mglit #authorsofinstagram #writing #schoolvisit #schooltalk #authorschoolvisit #getreading #writing #fourcornerscharterschool https://www.instagram.com/p/CnpQThsr0w-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Texture: The Wonders of Nature. Contrast is achieved here with the gold outline of the book being outlined and embossed. When you put your hands over the book you can feel the texture of it increasing its appeal. The cover artist likely designed the book this way to bring attention to the nature elements showcased around the title. This gives a visual cue to what the book is about and what is in store within it. There's a lot of activity in this design.
Tumblr media
Scale: Parenting for Liberation: A Guide for Raising Black Children. Contrast is achieved here with the scale of the text being different weights and sizes. There is also a difference in thickness within the title font. The word "for" is scaled down in size to fit between the words "parenting" and "liberation." Without scale, the word would not stand out, the point of the word is for it to not draw attention away from the two other words in the title. The way the rest of the cover is designed to guide your eyes to the bolded words. There is a lot of activity in this design along with repetition/progression.
Tumblr media
Rhythm/Balance: Pedagogy of Hope: Reliving Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Contrast is achieved here with the rhythm and balance of the words being evident. They work together to promote this and are italicized/angled in the direction of the colored rectangle they are in. Rhythm is involved as the title reflects movement and showcases a folding aspect. Balance is involved with the difference in size of the title fonts. The other words involved in the title are balanced in the middle promoting a hierarchy within the title. Attention is drawn to the words that stand out within the title because they summarize the smaller ones. Repetition/progression is also utilized on the cover.
Tumblr media
Point/Line/Plane: SchoolTalk: Rethinking What We Say About- And To- Students Every Day. Contrast is achieved here with the lines across the page. The bright yellow arrow guides readers' eyes to the center of the page which is where the title lies. The points leading to the text bubbles around the title font guide attention back to the center as well but also stand out on their own. The arrow leads to another description of the book at the top. Without the use of lines and points on the cover the title would not have as much meaning or be as organized. There's a lot of activity in this design.
Tumblr media
Scale: Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage. Contrast is achieved here within the title. It's hard to tell what word is suppose to come first with how they are scaled against each other. This develops a contrast just within the title itself. The additional information to the title is scaled down in size so it doesn't take away from the attention of the title. The title font is bold and has the same style for both words concentrating attention on the middle letter 'A.' Repetition/progression and activity are also utilized on the cover.

Day 471 - United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Devon School Talks, and Brixton Mission Launch — What an utterly brilliant day spent with my good friend Andy, and Mr Day. Luke (aka Mr Day) had organised a trio of schools to visit today. Although the drive down last night was long, and sleep short, the kids made up for that, and then some. — Bratton Fleming, Holywell, and Ashleigh primary schools in Devon were my whistle stop tour of the minds of tomorrow. I spoke, showed some videos and photos, and then we had some autograph signing to do before chats with some of the more enthusiastic runners amongst them. I must thank the teachers, Luke, and Sue for accepting me into the school and welcoming me with open arms. — The thing about speaking about this trip to kids, is that the learning bit for them comes so easily. it’s not just about the geography or the photos of my smelly battered feet, but it’s about opening these young minds to the thought that your future is only limited by your mind, and your willingness to try, try and try again. Failure is to be celebrated, fear is to be squashed, and today is a chance to remember that it’s all ahead of you. I loved giving my small bits of advice to about 800 or so kids today. I hope that a few of you will remember me in years to come and pass on my message to others. Today is a privilege, Tomorrow is a maybe, so go make the most of today. — Once my time at the schools was over, i was on a tight schedule to drive from Devon to West London, dumb the car, and then tube in to Brixton to speak at the relaunch of Mission. Mission is something I’m proud to talk about to people. Started by my mate Tom, he and his team have done an outstanding job at creating a product that is genuinely brilliant. It’s just a tea company. It’s really NOT. Just try their tea for a week, and you won’t go back to normal tea. A pleasure to meet some of you tonight. And now it’s dark outside, and I’ve’ finally crawled into bed at midnight, I’ve just set my alarm for 05:00 ready for an early start and a day of more media ahead of the London Marathon. — JUST GIVING PAGE - Nick Butter Running The World 196 - Link in bio. — #run #schooltalk #runner #lmarathon #speaker (at Bratton Fleming) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwxXk9hHueK/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fp3gjw6m589l

There are things you should learn. Your past is a skeleton walking one step behind you, and your future is a skeleton walking one step in front of you. Maybe you don't wear a watch, but your skeletons do, and they always know what time it is. Now, these skeletons are made of memories, dreams, and voices. And they can trap you in the in-between, between touching and becoming. But they're not necessarily evil, unless you let them be. What you have to do is keep moving, keep walking, in step with your skeletons. They ain't ever going to leave you, so you don't have to worry about that. Your past ain't going to fall behind, and your future won't get too far ahead. Sometimes, though, your skeletons will talk to you, tell you to sit down and take a rest, breathe a little. Maybe they'll make you promises, tell you all the things you want to hear. Sometimes your skeletons will dress up as beautiful Indian women and ask you to slow dance. Sometimes your skeletons will dress up as your best friend and offer you a drink, one more for the road. Sometimes your skeletons will look exactly like your parents and offer you gifts. But, no matter what they do, keep walking, keep moving. And don't wear a watch. Hell, Indians never need to wear a watch because your skeletons will always remind you about the time. See, it is always now. That's what Indian time is. The past, the future, all of it is wrapped up in the now. That's how it is. We are trapped in the now.
