Il y a une dizaine de jours, je suis parti retrouver Christine à Narbonne.

Le Musée Narbo Via, dédié à la Narbo romaine (cette ville fut la première ville romaine hors d'Italie et un des 3 plus grands ports de l'Empire romain)

Ici quelques maquettes de navires romains :

un ponto : trois-mâts hauturier.

une corbita : navire de commerce.

une horreia = une allège portuaire (bon, qu'on sache bien que je ne sais même pas ce qu'est une allège...apparemment c'est une embarcation prévue pour de courts trajets, des transferts de marchandises...)

une scapha, sorte de petite barque.

les 2 dernières : maquette de l'épave d'allège trouvée à Mandirac, halée par des hommes.

O nome da Perfuração que algumas pessoas chamam de "Flat", na verdade é SCAPHA ou OUTER CONCH.. Flat, normalmente é apenas uma referência técnica que diz respeito ao tipo de Topo utilizado na Perfuração, quando se usa um modelo de topo que é plano na parte de baixo, que fica em contato com a pele, inclusive é uma ótima maneira de observação o ângulo correto da Perfuração, pois se o todo fica paralelo a pele, significa q a Perfuração está no ângulo correto, no Brasil a gente até criou um termo pra quando isso acontece: FLATear - quando a Perfuração fica num ângulo tão precioso que o topo Flat se acomoda perfeitamente na pele.. a boat bug (Enoplops sp., probably E. scapha) sipping some thistle juice. i don't mean to gloss past the bug's obviously ridiculous appearance but my favorite thing about these is the genus name. i love saying enoplops. i see one and i go "enoplops" the way you'd see a cow and go "cow"

hello! would you mind talking about Mithrun's partial deafness? i've seen a bit about his missing eye, but not much about the fact that missing half his ears would affect his hearing

partial deafness is probably not the correct verbiage (wrote the post so dehydrated/sleep-deprived that i was Not thinking very well & i did not really expect it to be read) but his hearing would likely be impaired, at least relative to other elves including his past self.

for the record, i have no medical training whatsoever, so i’m going entirely off a human bio class i had a lot of fun in + things i know about sound via studying audio engineering. so take everything i say with a tablespoon of salt.

the external part of the ear that you see is designed to collect sound and channel it into the ear canal, and iirc it’s also important for determining the direction a sound is coming from. elf ears are said to be soft and flexible like those of sheep (or was it goats), and i don’t know anything about sheep (or goats). but since elf ears are large and pointed and able to move, i’ve been picturing them a bit like… cats’ or foxes’. anyway, having such elongated ears would allow them to capture a lot of sound, and i’d assume their mobility would allow for an increased degree of precision in terms of pinpointing origin (side note: it’d be interesting if they also played a role in thermoregulation but there isn’t really any indication that that’s the case. mithrun seems to have no problem losing body heat, actually). mithrun is missing a large amount of his external ears, so they would not be able to collect as much sound as they used to, and more than that they wouldn’t have as significant a range of motion, which i’d expect to reduce his ability to discern where a sound is coming from. that said, his hearing ability might be comparable to a tallman’s? though it’s possible that missing the curl of the helix and having the ridges of the fossa/scapha/antihelix/etc incomplete would reduce his hearing further than that, too.

essentially, because there’s no damage to his inner ear that we’re aware of, his hearing might not be SUPER reduced, but he wouldn’t be able to collect as much sound as the average elf and maybe not even as much as the average tallman.

Anotia

Anotia is a congenital ear deformity that is present at birth. Anotia is referred to as the absence of the entire external part of the ear. This condition can be caused to one ear, which is more common, or both ears.

Microtia

Microtia is a congenital deformity where the child is born with a small and malformed external ear. In this birth defect, the ear does not fully develop during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Lop Ear

Lop ears refer to an ear deformity where the top rim of the ear is either folded over, wrinkled or tight. Lop ear is caused by a relative lack of skin, i.e., underdeveloped helical cartilage, as well as a smaller cartilage framework than the other side.

Cup Ear

Cup ear deformity is a common deformity that is characterised by ears that project or stick out further, leaving a gap of more than 2 cm from the middle portion of the ear to the back. This is a congenital deformity that involves a malformation of the helical rim, i.e., the top rim of the ear. 

Cryptotia

Cryptotia is often also known as a hidden ear because, in this condition, the cartilaginous frame is normally developed but is contained within a pocket of skin. This ear deformity is defined as a condition where the upper portion of the ear is buried under the skin of the scalp. 

Bat Ear

The bat ear or prominent ear is an abnormally protruding human ear where the concha is large with a poorly developed anti-helix and scapha. It may be unilateral or bilateral. The concha is large, with an underdeveloped antihelix and scapha. It results from cartilage malformation during primitive ear development in the early stages of life.
