BODY PIERCING FAQ

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE GETTING A PIERCING?

Do your research! Into the piercing itself, it’s healing time and the aftercare involved. Especially if it’s your first ever piercing or a new piercing type/location etc. It is important to consider your lifestyle, work/school life and the longevity of piercing. Check my blog for detailed posts about certain piercings!

Next, research your piercer! I will be including a blog post on what makes a safe piercer soon …

In general, look at portfolios, fresh and healed. Check reviews and client testimonials. Look for verified, branded jewellery, supplies etc. on their socials. Blood Borne Pathogens and First Aid Certificates should be present in any reputable studio and they can provide mill certificates for jewellery quality. If in doubt, ask them!

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE A PIERCING APPOINTMENT?

*All reputable studios will have their own rules and recommendations. Refer to their websites/socials or contact them directly.*

I always recommend you eat a good meal within 4 hours of your appointment and stay well-hydrated before and after. It makes the whole process much easier when you are calm, well-fed and alert! This also makes the risk of feeling a bit woozy much smaller, which I think we can all agree is a good thing.

Consider the future piercing location. On the body, try to wear clothing that will both give the piercer easy access and avoid irritating the fresh piercing afterwards. For facial piercings, perhaps avoid heavy face products or makeup to minimise the risk of transferring any of it into the fresh piercing.

I would advise putting clean sheets and pillows on your bed for body and ear piercings, and getting a new toothbrush for oral piercings.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WITH A FRESH PIERCING?

Initially there will be some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, and/or bruising. During healing there will be some some discoloration (redness), minor itching and a slow secretion of a whitish yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewellery. The tissue may tighten around the jewellery as it heals.

WHAT DO I USE TO CLEAN MY PIERCING?

Sterile saline 0.9% wound wash. It should be from an airtight, non-porous container (no plastic), with a one direction flow to ensure it stays sterile each use. It shouldn’t contain any additives whatsoever. I personally recommend Neilmed and Stericlens, which are available at reputable studios. Never mix your own saline!

Sometimes, lukewarm water from the shower can also be used to rinse a piercing, as long as no shower products are involved.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD I STAY AWAY FROM?

Anything other than plain water or sterile saline wound wash! Iodine, Tea Tree Oil, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Rubbing Alcohol should never be used on a healing piercing. These solutions are very harsh and will dry the skin, making healing more difficult for your piercing. Ointments, such as Neosporin, Polysporin, and Bacitracin are to be avoided. All of these can leave your piercing more vulnerable to infection!

Ensure that daily products like body wash, lotion, makeup etc do not enter the fresh piercing site. For example, an indirect rinse in the shower after cleaning yourself can ensure no products have gotten into the piercing.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY PIERCING? HOW OFTEN?

For ear and facial piercings: with clean, freshly washed hands, use the sterile saline wound wash to rinse and irrigate the piercing area. Be gentle, take care not to unnecessarily move or knock your jewellery and cause irritation.

The idea is to gently use the saline to wash away the crust and buildup. Once clear of buildup, use a clean paper towel/piece of non-woven gauze to gently pat the area dry, or use a hairdryer on a cool setting from a distance. It is incredibly important that your piercing is dried anytime it gets wet, as bacteria thrives in moisture.

I personally don’t recommend the use of cotton buds or Q Tips as the wool fibers can easily get caught and wrap around piercing jewellery, which is very irritating and creates a high risk for infection. However, some people have success with higher quality, cosmetic swabs where this issue occurs less. You may be able to perform a similar action with non-woven gauze, but any and all movement/pressure etc on the jewellery/piercing can irritate it. Irrigation is the best option!

If you are struggling to remove buildup with the saline alone, try soaking a clean paper towel/piece of non-woven gauze with the saline or clean warm water, and soak the area for a minute or two. This can help soften the buildup and make it easier to rinse away. If you are struggling, please see your piercer as we are happy to help with cleaning!

For oral piercings: rinse with cool, clean water after eating and drinking. Maintaining good oral hygiene is the main factor in healing an oral piercing well. Avoid products with whitening effects.

This should be done as needed, usually once in the morning and once at night. This may drop down to once a day later down the line as your piercing heals, but everyone is different.

There is such a thing as over-cleaning! Most piercings should only be cleaned twice a day, and no more. There are exceptions to the rule when it comes to oral piercings. Oral piercings should be cleaned after eating meals and snacks.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY PIERCING?

For ear, facial and body piercings: Do your best not to sleep on the piercing as it heals. Travel pillows are a great idea to use if you are having trouble by sleeping on it. Avoid swimming and soaking because it may extend the healing process. A fresh piercing should never be submerged in any water. If you have long hair that keeps pulling and irritating the area you can routinely tie or pin it back, or you can shave or trim the hair around your ear and rock a new style for a little while! Never fiddle, pick or play with the piercing or jewellery.

For oral piercings: Maintain good oral hygiene. Avoid smoking, vaping and any activity involving bodily fluids like kissing and oral sex for weeks. Try not to fiddle or play with the jewellery to avoid irritating the piercing and causing gum and tooth damage.

Strongly suggest staying away from lipstick or lip balm. Any piercing that doesn’t pass through the vermilion border of the lip (traditional labret, monroe etc.), you should be fine to use lip products again in just 2-4 weeks. However for vertical labrets, vertical philtrum, and inverse verticals, no lipstick or lip products till it’s fully healed. Stay well hydrated to combat your chapped lips.
