MERROCK WINTER TRIP TO FINLAND WE GO! VISITING TURKU

Next on our list of places to visit is Turku! This city is old. Really, really old! As in, around since the 1200s old. With its cobblestone streets and old sailing ships, you can feel the history of the place.

We will be staying at the Scandic Hamburger Börs, and you can have your choice of lodging, wherever you would like to stay, and with who.

What is there to see and do here? You can visit the Turku Castle, the maritime museum, a pharmacy museum, art museum and a library! Don't forget to stop by the cathedral, known as the most important religious building in Finland. There are tons of spots to get a drink and eat along the river, with excellent culinary choices. Scandic rex; the Tyrannosaur that turned out to be a fish! The teeth of an unknown dinosaur, suspected to be a tyrannosaur, was found in Skåne, Sweden. It has later been confirmed to not have been a dinosaur at all but most likely came from a fish.  I just found it very cool as a person from Sweden that a species of tyrannosaur was thought to have lived here and just might have! The name "Scandic rex" is obviously a nomen nudum. I would have problably named it something along the line as "Borealisaurus scandic" as in "the boreal lizard from scandinavia".......or viking...something with viking...

Skulpturer fra Christian Ringnes sin samling pryder nå den nyrenoverte parken ved Scandic Lillehammer Hotel. Ringnes og Scandic Lillehammer Hotel ønsker velkommen til Lillehammer Skulpturpark.

– Jeg ønsket å gi en gave til en by og et hotell jeg holder kjært. Skulpturparken skal være berikende for innbyggerne i Lillehammer, gjestene på hotellet og andre tilreisende. Parken oppgraderer Lillehammer som kulturby og destinasjon, sier kunstsamler og eiendomsinvestor Christian Ringnes.

Anerkjente kunstnere

Ringnes er for mange kjent som initiativtager bak den internasjonalt anerkjente Ekebergparken. Scandic Lillehammer Hotel får to skulpturer som også er kjent fra Ekebergparken. Disse er «Open Book» av den britiske kunstneren Diane Maclean og «Fideicommissum» av svenske Ann-Sofi Sidén. Parken inkluderer også blant annet skulpturer av Per Inge Bjørlo, Sverre Koren Bjertnæs, Fredrik Raddum og amerikanske Tom Sachs.

Nyrenovert parkanlegg

Hotellets parkanlegg har vært gjennom en omfattende rehabilitering. Inspirasjonen bak rehabiliteringen kommer fra villahagene i Ekebergparken i Oslo og en hage i Venezia. Hotelldirektør Lars Granum ved Scandic Lillehammer Hotel gleder seg til å vise frem det endelige resultatet.

– Skulpturene er prikken over i’en i den nyrenoverte parken vår. En tur i parken rundt Scandic Lillehammer Hotel har aldri vært flottere. Nå er det overraskelser bak hver sving, sier Granum. 

Kunsthotellet

Kulturopplevelsene står i kø på Scandic Lillehammer Hotel. I tillegg til skulpturparken har hotellet også en Art Wall med imponerende verk av norske kunstnere fra 1800-tallet. Kunstverkene er konsentrert på én og samme vegg med flere bilder i høyden. Christian Ringnes har bidratt med flere av disse verkene.

Del av Scandic-familien

Scandic overtok driften av Scandic Lillehammer Hotel 1. mai i år, men eies fremdeles av Pandox der Christian Ringnes' selskap Eiendomsspar er medeier. De to siste årene har Scandic Lillehammer Hotel gjennomgått en totalrenovering. Arbeidet har en prislapp på 60 millioner kroner og inkluderer blant annet et velværesenter med infinity-basseng, fire badstuer og to utebasseng.
